As we step into 2025, cricket continues to evolve but there's always room for fresh ideas and innovations to keep the game exciting and relevant to modern audiences. We've already seen the rise of new formats like The Hundred and the growing popularity of T20 leagues around the world. But the question is: what’s next for cricket?

First off I think it's time we look at how the traditional formats like Tests and ODIs can adapt to the times. Test cricket in particular needs to maintain its charm while being more accessible to the new generation. Shorter formats within Test series, or even innovative ways to shorten matches without compromising on the quality of cricket could be an area to explore.

On the innovation side we’re already seeing advancements in player tracking, digital umpiring and fan engagement. But there’s so much more we can do! For example introducing AI-driven stats for fans to analyze players in real time or maybe even using augmented reality to enhance viewing experiences—these are ideas that could revolutionize how we watch the game.

Let’s also think about cricket's global appeal. While the T20 format has helped the game reach more people, how can we engage regions where cricket is still growing like the USA or some parts of Africa? Are there formats or rules that could make cricket more exciting and accessible to a wider audience?

I’m really curious to hear your thoughts—what do you think cricket needs in terms of new formats or innovations as we move forward into 2025 and beyond?

What if we had a longer or flexible powerplay? Right now the powerplay is set but what if teams could choose when to use it during the game? and A tool that tracks the speed and line/length of each ball could be really useful for analysts and fans alike. It would give us a deeper understanding of a bowler’s performance and add an extra layer to how we enjoy the game.

I would love to see them bring back the Champions League format with domestic T20 winners from different countries facing each other

A substitute is req in case of genuine injury in 1st innings atleast , Pakistan played with 10 men in last game

A free hit can continue if hit for a 6 - would further weaken bowling in a batter friendly era

Or

A free hit ball can be delivered by any bowler without impacting their over quota

Unfortunately, not happening. BCCI has already said they have no interest in it at all. That shut the CL down.

If the others had any vision or desire to do CL without BCCI/IPL teams they would have done it already. I am going to take a wild guess and say the math doesn't add up without IPL. Hence no CL.

- Remove the two new-ball rule in ODIs
- Turn on the damn floodlights if you are experiencing bad light in test matches. It's not the 1890s anymore.
- Add injury substitutes.
- Refine the DLS method to include factors like wickets in hand, recent momentum, and other metrics for more accurate recalculations.
- Add free-hits to test cricket too.

A mini champions league happened in Guyuna recently but didn't generate much hype.

I would love to see these changes:

1) Introduce red card, yellow card, and substition system (like in football). A team should be allowed to make 2 substitutions every game whether there is an injury or not. Time wasters should receive yellow cards. Physical contacts should result in red cards.

2) A bowler should be allowed to bowl 3 bouncers per over (I believe the limit is 2 currently).

3) Bring back 1 new ball in ODI format. 2 new balls are not good for ODI.

4) ICC should show spine and act more independent. They are currently behaving like BCCICC.

They need to address over-rate related issues. England takes awful lot of time in each Test.

I think they need to allow bowlers to switch hands for bowling too like the batters can switch hit or change their posture.

Scrap T20s and 50 over games. Just have one white ball LOI format with 30 overs per innings which perfectly strikes the balance between the two existing LOI formats. This should be the format used for the World Cup.

Reduce Test Matches to 3 days and have the teams plus just one full innings per side. The second innings will just be a one wicket shoot out where teams can send any batting pair they want (like the super over) . So 22 wickets per test instead of 40. Have an annual WTC cycle where all top 9 teams face each other (4 H and 4 A). Give Test status to Scotland and have all the 4 remaining Test playing nations fight it out for a promotion to the top 9.

Doing the above can make Cricket more sharper and less boring for all sides involved.
