As the Australian tour is in a matter of days, below I have mentioned some of the finest test performances over a series by Indian batsmen in Australia.

Which performance was the most impressive according to you?

Virat Kohli in 2014-15
Cheteshwar Pujara in 2018-19
Rahul Dravid in 2003-04
Sachin Tendulkar in 1999-00
Any Other( from any era)

Rahul Dravid scored against williams, bichel and lee. So he is out.

There's nothing great in averaging 46 in a series. So Tendulkar is out.

Kohli and Pujara are left. Pujara won us the series and also played on difficult tracks compared to 2014.

Pujara Wins.

Among the mentioned options, the toughest batting conditions, toughest match situation and toughest bowling attack to score runs was 1999-00 series.

Kohli during the 14/15 tour.

Arguably Laxman or Dravid in 2003/04 come next.

Pujara 18/19 hands down. No one from any Asian team's history is capable of achieving that feat except maybe Kohli.

Don't let the pitch fool you. Pujara just beat them to a pulp. He out grinded them. He played attrition cricket and Zapped their energy. He decimated the quality Aussie bowling attack which btw is easily one of their best ever. Pujara just pummelled them into submission. Beautiful series by that man.

For that reason alone he is above root at this point. One more good series like that and he will be on par with Kane.

Quality of bowling was highest in 1999.
But surely, helping the team to win a series must rank higher.

Pujara
Sachin
Dravid (his 200 led to a win)
Kohli

When did India tour Australia in 92/93 ? In that season West Indies toured Australia and won their last test series there. Maybe a year before that India toured Australia.

Tendulkar in 1999

Did it against McGrath, Warney and two trigger happy umpires. Besides, that was the good old bullying Aussie juggernaut team that had beaten both India and Pakistan to pulp 6-0 and went on to win 17 straight test matches.

You can never judge numbers without properly contextualizing them. Before Laxman stepped in the 3rd test at Sydney, Tendulkar was the only man fighting that Aussie team.

Sehwag 151 at Adelaide in 2008
Match saving knock, Australia could have won that but due to that knock India manage to draw the match.

Whatever happened to Laxman? He was one of your greats, don’t see him anywhere these days

He was awarded 'player of the series' in that tour for scoring 278 runs at 46 Avg in that series. Tells us how tough scoring runs was in that series for Indian batsmen.

He is very much active in commentary and in IPL in coaching capacity post retirement. Laxman is one of the most respected Indian cricketers with a flawless track record in terms of discipline and professional conduct. Him, Dravid, Kumble, Srinath are all similar people and keep a very low profile.

Harper gave him out shoulder before wicket on duck in that series. Sachin's famously got shagged by umpires on various occasions. They felt pride in giving him out and creating ''moments" :))

Sandeep Patil in 1981 series was standout , 60+ avg against a attack of Lillee , Hogg and Pascoe. He got hit in first test by a nasty bouncer. Recovered i second test to score 174 in first inning.

Interesting.
I just checked the stats for that Series Ponting scored 400+,langer 350+ but obviously they played against Indian trundlers
In comparison Sachin made 270 but still recived the MOTS award. Looks like the decisions regarding MOTs were much more fairer in those days.

OTOH kohli outscored the oppositions best batsman by 60 runs in SA against an even better pace attack but still received nothing.

Very hard to say.

Dravid - Pujara can't decide.

Dravid had to battle the psychological impact of that Aussie team.

Pujara scored against a much better bowling attack but pitches in Aus are getting easier (it just isn't that quick anymore).

Kohli in SA was insane stuff. Supreme stuff. But yeah it ain't Aus.

Kohli in Aus 2014 was crazy too.

Upon thinking, I think I will go with Kohli 2014.

The Adelaide knock and all the crazy things he did entire series.

I think Ponting scored 375 runs and Langer got 288 runs in that series. So, those were actually very tough wickets and not like the ones which we have been watching in Australia post the turn of the millennium.

Our bowlers were not good enough to take 20 wickets away from home back then against their team which also had ATG batting lineup apart from having ATG bowling lineup. Since 2015 though, things have changed and our bowling has gotten better.

That Rahane Kohli partnership against Johnson is the best display of Indian batting
Prowess. Strokes and aggression. Stuff of legends

Yeah agree with that.
Also SA tour was the beginning of the rise of our fast bowling trio.

It was very disheartening the way Virat got out in Adelaide. He was batting at a different plane that day. Some of the shots were thoroughly entertaining and that performance deserved one win in that series but unfortunately it didn't happen 😣

Tendulkar 1999/00.

Given shoulder before wicket and man of the series too. Facing Mcgrath, Warne, B Lee in tough conditions.

Scoring 4 100s in Australia for a touring batsmen is rare.

I'll go with Kohli in 2014/2015.

Not better*. Best in the world If not top 2.

Batting wise we just dont play tour games like we used to in 2000 due to T20 and franchize cricket. I bet if we actually toured a England plus n.z AND played just tests the results would be different.

This!

That '99 series was something else in terms of hostility of Australian bowlers, led by McGrath who I think is most foul mouthed fast bowler ever. Add to that Australian umpires & the pitches we encountered during the series.

Also, the total ineptitude of Indian batsman in that series led by Dravid barring VVS in SCG test was from some other planet.

Surprisingly McGrath is one of the most humble persons off the pitch. Perhaps, abusing opposition players egged him on, just like Kohli.

Kohli in 2014/15.

For me, that was the series where he immortalized himself among the pantheons of legendary batsman.

That performance was particularly remarkable because of all the criticism that he had to face for his performance in England few months prior, with many people writing him off as a home track bully.

The way he responded and silenced his ignorant critics was magical.

Undoubtedly.

Australians were bullies as a team. Individually most of them were thorough professionals and gentlemen off the field. They could do that back then when they had a dream team and most opponents weren't in their best phase.

A generation of great batsmen went through that era with hardly anything to show against the Aussies.

Tendulkar and Lara pretty much the two guys who gave it back to Aussies consistently across formats.

Most ODI 100s in Australia:

5- Virat Kohli
5- Rohit Sharma
3- V V S Laxman
2- Gautam Gambhir
2- Shikhar Dhawan

1- Sachin
1- Yuvi
