Which players should be part of Pakistan's 15-member squad in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025?

@The Bald Eagle

Logically this is the most realistic squad that pcb can select given their situation.

However ik the final squad will be

Captain × Vc

1) Rizwan
2) Agha

Openers

1) Saim
2) Abdullah
3) Fakhar (I think hell be their for ct)

Top to Middle order

1) Babar
2) Kamran Ghulam
3) Tayyab Tahir
4) Niazi

Pace Bowlers

1) Shaheen
2) Naseem
3) Rauf
4) Husnain

Spinners

1) Sufiyan
2) Abrar

^^ 100% this will be the squad with usman khan being reserve keeper.
Missing Sajid Khan would be too bad

Pretty much the squad they will go with

I am a bit confused between Sajid Khan, Abrar and Sufiyan. Sufiyan must be tried in the 3rd ODI now

Sajid khan is a must due to batting ability. Pakistan needs a solid no 8. Shaheen is useless.

Shaheen should bat no higher then no 9 and even then he's just a no 10/no 11 batter in honesty.

He can blindly slog and will play innings where he can get quick fire 20's but it'll happen far and few in between.

My squad

Fakhar
Saim
Babar
Kamran Ghullam
Rizwan
Agha
Irfan Khan
Jamal
Shaheen
Naseem
Rauf
Abrar
Sufiyan/sajid khan
Wasim Jnr
Saud Shakeel

Pakistan repeating the same mistakes they made in the build up to the 2023 World Cup.

All it takes is one of your major components who you depend on to break down, and disaster strikes!

The breakdown is bound to happen. Believe that.
What will be your team for CT?

Well if I get paid £10M to take the role and pick the XI (because that’s what it’s going to take to make me care)

1. Fakhar
2. Saim
3. Babar
4. Kamran/Usman (home conditions)
5. Tayyab
6. Salman
7. Rizwan (c)
8. Jamal/Jahandad
9. Shaheen
10. Rauf/Naseem
11. Abrar

12th man Niazi (he will come on to field 30-40 overs every game)

Something along these lines.

Pretty solid tbh. The only change I would make
is probably Saud in for tayyab. Also good to have a left handed bat in middle order.

1. Ahmed Shahzad
2. Imam ul Haq

Bhai if my £10m isnt in my account before the PCB ask me to select the squad

I will select this one and announce it publicly on all national and international media outlets. They can suffer chacha and khushdil, and Imad Wasim slagging off Babar in all of his interviews.

1. Fakhar

11. Abrar

12. Abbas afridi
13. Tayaab
14. Usman
15. Sufiyan

Can see a few have chosen Hasnain as a back up. I don’t get that when Abbas Afridi is around and performing in t20. Or Wasim. Hasnain hasn’t performed in any format yet, and is looking worse after remodelled action. I get he has potential, but I don’t think I’d want him coming in at a tournament, I’d rather go for the more reliable option.

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Saim Ayub
3. Babar Azam

This will likely be the general outline for the squad going into match #1 in Karachi.

Ideally, they will fill the opening spot with Fakhar Zaman and then the #7 spot is going to be an interesting one. Which direction do they choose to go in? Irfan Niazi? Tayyab Tahir? Someone else?

That's a major question mark because no one has stood out.

Same goes for the bench. Only Hasnain likely has a spot for continuity. Maybe Haseebullah as a backup keeper + opener? I think Shafique and Usman Khan should be dropped but maybe they will find spots.

They can go in several different directions for the bench.

Imam should bring back to open with Saim if Fakhar is still being punished by PCB for some unknown reason.
Amer Jamal is useless , no need for him
Wasim Junior should make a come back
Mohammad Haris should also be in 15, a back up keeper and opener
I will prefer Tayyab over Irfan Niazi for #7 position

This will be my starting 11

Saim
Fakhar ( Imam )
Babar
Rizwan
Kamran
Agha
Tayyab
Naseem
afreedi
Harris
Abrar

Wasim Junior, Hasnain, Mohd Harris , Sufyan

I am on the fence with M Harris selection. Has he done anything special in domestic cricket off late? I guess the question is if not M Harris then who. Both Usman & Haseebullah have not set the world alight with their performances either.

Think it's mostly a set roster. My squad:

1. Fakhar
2. Saim
3. Babar
4. Rizwan
5. Kamran
6. Agha
7. Irfan
8. Shaheen
9. Naseem
10. Rauf
11. Abrar

12. Haris (backup keeper/opener or lower order for Irfan)
13. Sufiyan
14. Hasnain
15. Jamal/Abbas

For the bench, I would prefer going with more bowling options than batting options because they already have 7 batsmen in the playing XI. If Pakistan wanted to deepen their bowling, they could chose to go with Abbas or Jamal (one all-round pacer) in place for Irfan. Generally spinners haven't done too well in Pakistan in ODI's so there could be a case to go with one spinner in the squad (Abrar) but they also have matches in UAE so you probably want a backup spinner in the squad.

Personally, I don't want players like Tayyab in the squad who don't have power and need to bat in the top 5 to be useful. Usman just isn't a real player vs pace and at least Haris has shown glimpses of doing well in international cricket.

Now, should we stick with the squad that whitewashed South Africa in the ODI series, or do you suggest some changes for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad? In my opinion, we need to bring Fakhar Zaman back into the squad.

Sohaib Maqsood, while talking on his YouTube channel:

"I’ve rarely seen this kind of unity in the team. They communicate about the bowler, pitch conditions, and what to do next. If we look at the team management’s thinking, they are preparing the same top six batters for the Champions Trophy. The seventh position is a big question."

"We always say there should be an all-rounder at number seven, but Pakistan's tail is very long. If we add an all-rounder, the batting might get shorter."

1. Saim
2. Rizwan
3. Babar
4. Irfan

That would be my squad. We need to stay away from dross like fakhar and imam. Imams strike rate of 82 is diabolical for modern day ODI cricket. It's a massive hindrance. Fakhar is a 1 in 10 innings player and 35 next year. Saim is showing the entire batting stock of pakistan how to bat and is the only modern day batsman we have to takes his game and more importantly his fitness seriously. We need to groom more attacking young openers like him now and look to the future. In the meantime promote rizwan/babar and get Irfan up the order. Irfan is a seriously talented individual and he needs to be given an opportunity to spend time at the crease and build an innings.
Jahandad/arafat are really talented, young all round cricketers. We need to back them and give them exposure to the bigtime.

For the subcontinent our spin options are covered with abrar, sufyan, arafat and 2 top class 6th bowling options in salman and saim.

Haider Ali is my wildcard pick. There's so much talent there and he's a natural 6 hitter. I've seen a change in him in the ongoing champions trophy. More maturity, better shot selection and he seems to have developed mentally. 50 overs mightve come too soon for him but I'd like to see him given a 2nd chance.

Our pace battery concerns me slightly. Shaheen is thankfully showing signs of a return to form. Haris, for me is nothing more then a t20 bowler and post injuries naseem has regressed and been very ineffective of late. I like jamal but not sure he's the answer either. Our pace reserves are really worrying. Just like we've done with our new breed of spinners we desperately need to unearth and groom some fast bowling talent.

The most important thing however is we need to stay clear of all the dross and garbage that has been binned. Fakhar, imam, ifti, khushdil, SHADAB (horrendous cricketer), imad, nawaz etc etc etc. Best thing that's happened to pakistan cricket in the modern times is dropping all these duds and giving tried and tested domestic performers/promising youngsters a chance. This and making rizwan limited over captain has been a breath of fresh air. Azhar ali, asad shafiq and Co have done a brilliant job as modern, dynamic selectors. Long may this new modern approach continue.

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan, during a media interaction in Karachi:

"Fakhar Zaman should definitely be in the team."

"If Fakhar and Saim play together, we can score 400 in a One-Day match."

"The PCB has acted wisely by supporting players who give their all for the team."

I think This would most probably be the squad we will see. Any changes to this squad??

Bazid Khan during a show on a local sports channel, discussed the spin combination for Pakistan in the squad selection for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025:

"Look, I believe the spinners should definitely include Sufiyan. He is a guaranteed selection. Abrar could also serve as your main spinner, especially for the match in Dubai, where the ball is likely to grip more. With this combination, if Salman Ali Agha can provide four to five overs, he becomes your sixth bowler.

"You also have the option to avoid playing four fast bowlers. Instead, you could select Shaheen, Naseem, and Haris as the three fast bowlers, with Abrar and Sufiyan handling the spin. This would cover both the pace and spin departments with just five bowlers."

"Alternatively, you could add another fast bowler, like Aamer Jamal, alongside Shaheen, Haris, and Abrar. This would give you four fast bowlers and two spinners. With Salman Ali Agha in the mix, you'd have six bowlers, which should be sufficient. Anything more would be excessive."

"I think Sufiyan is particularly important for Pakistan in their group. Apart from New Zealand, all other Asian sides will find it difficult to face him. The left-arm spinner is a rare commodity in Pakistan, making him a valuable asset. Rizwan used him really well in the South Africa match, and I believe he should be the first-choice spinner for the Champions Trophy."

Fakhar is gonna make a comeback I think. Abdullah should be dropped from the ODI's as well.

Saim is injured so likely out .

But This is a solid team and most of the players are in form .

Who is Irfan khan? Is he batting allrounder

Only problem is Pakistan don't have much batting depth to chase the Big score.

If Saim doesn't play Shan Masood can slot in.

Couple of things,
1. Saud Shakeel must be preferred over Kamran Ghulam and probably even Agha Salman. He needs to be in Pakistan ODI first 11 asap. Saud Shakeel is the batter for no4. Rizwan should not bat higher than no6.

2. Are we confident that Sufiyan Muqeem can fill Abrar Ahmed’s boots if the latter were injured or out of form. Is he ready right now? I am not sure. I would go with Nauman or Sajid Ali instead. They are confident with load of experience in these conditions.

3. Irfan Khan at no7 is an experiment that will fail pretty soon. We should have an allrounder in the team. Saim and Agha sharing the 5th bowler responsibility is a gamble, and we need a proper back-up to this gamble. If they want a hitter at no7, Mohammad Haris would have been ideal, but if they want an allrounder, Khusdil Shah is an option too.

4. Boat has sailed for Wasim Junior. What wrong has Hasnain did?

Rizwan has been performing at 4. There's no need to fix something that isn't broken. Also feel that is his best number. Ditto for Salman and Ghulam. You can't drop them after their recent performances.

I am not a fan of selecting people for performances in other formats. And mystery spinners and wrist spinners are the name of the game in white-ball.

Irfan Khan has all the makings of a very good player and should be given more opportunities.

What did Wasim Jr. ever do to get dropped? And what has Hasnain done at all? Wasim Jr. was excellent in the last two ICC tournaments he played in, yet has seemingly never been trusted at all. He can bowl yorkers, he has pace and he is far better than Hasnain in every respect.

I'm done with Khushdil just as I'm done with Iftikhar. I don't think he has what it takes to succeed in international cricket and I would be more than happy never to see him play for Pakistan again.

Rizwan has been performing at 4. There's no need to fix something that isn't broken. Also feel that is his best number. Ditto for Salman and Ghulam. You can't drop them after their recent performances.

1. Saud Shakeel is heads and shoulders Kamran and Agha. Rizwan doesn’t have strike rotation required from a no4. He failed in the World Cup and he will fail again in ICC champions trophy. Rizwan should bat when 15 overs are left.

2. I am not denying mystery/wrist spinner is the way to go, but there is also Maharaj who is a great ODI bowler. Sufiyan has played 1 debut ODI game. Is he ready now? Will you throw him to the wolves in ICC? Is he ready?

3. Irfan Khan has debuted too early. It’s a punt as he’s a top order batter. We’ll see.

4. I agree Wasim Junior is a really good bowler. He never got dropped. He got unfit and Pakistani system has failed him by not rehabilitating him quickly. If he is fit and ready, I prefer he proves it in tri series. But if he has detoririated like all our other fast bowlers after injury, then Hasnain has done Ok enough in his last few outings. He helped Pakistan win ODIs against Aus/SA, including that 148 KPH Yorker that got RVD. Hes not a bad prospect.

Khusdil didn’t do that bad in ODIs; he was mostly dropped because of his T20I form. We shouldn’t just write off players – everyone can improve with time. Word is, Khusdil has really worked hard on his batting and made a lot of progress. Razzak even said he thinks Khusdil is the best prospect right now.

He also had a great domestic season and has always batted at No. 6, unlike Irfan and Tayyab who’ve mostly been top-order batsmen. Plus, Khusdil has 90 wickets in 110 List A games, so he's also a handy bowler.

Rizwan was Pakistan's best batsman at the last World Cup. How exactly did he fail? Saud Shakeel is a great player and the future but hasn't done enough to displace Rizwan or Salman right now. Rizwan has excellent numbers in ODI cricket since 2023.

He may go for runs, but he is a wicket-taker. I am okay with him being the back-up to Abrar.

I am fine with that. But it would be unfair to him, to not even select him for the tri-series and then drop him for

I think we are pretty close here.
To be honest, Saud Shakeel can’t do enough when he’s not even playing.
At the minute, he looks like the best batter in the country technically and temperamentally who’s being wronged by the system. Hes 29, he is not the “future”, his time is now.
He must be brought in to this team asap.
I am convinced by rizwan at no4

Yeah, I guess him being the future is probably not a particularly apt term. But first he would have to get in the squad. And the fact that he isn't even in the ODI squad right now is very concerning to me. His game is highly suited to ODI cricket.
