Have you watched the IPL final? Any thoughts?

Two best teams were playing, so it had to be good. SunRisers have got into the final with their bowling attack and one would have expected them to defend that sort of total (178). But they were hit by Shane Watson, he played a magnificent innings.

That is what you call a big match player, it was a big match. Chennai were in this position before and they came out on top. I don’t think anyone should complain, it was a batting team versus a bowling team. One innings took the game away from SunRisers. Chennai was Chennai.

What are your thoughts on the IPL season, which was saved by Virender Sehwag by picking you in the auction?

Without a doubt! It was superb to be part of the IPL once more. It is the best tournament in the world. I played for a new franchise, the reception there was fantastic. We had a good start but we lost the momentum in the final stages. Hopefully, next year.

Can you elaborate on your comment that ‘Sehwag saved the IPL…’? Was it a joke?

It was not a joke, I am serious. You have said IPL needs stars and you have answered the question. I have done so much for the IPL. You look back and see what I have done for the IPL. I had two centuries and won a trophy, still active and playing. You can still see what I have to offer to the game. I love to continue playing in India. This is where a lot of passion lies. There is some fuel in the tank.

Were you worried that you could end up being unsold in the auction? There were no takers for you initially?

No, no, no. I was not surprised. Whether it was the first or last minute (being picked) does not matter. But I don’t have too many expectations in life. You have to prepare yourself for disappointments. I have seen these things happen in the IPL. I was not actually following the auction. It was early morning for me back home in the Caribbean.

You scored a brilliant 146 with 18 sixes before the auction in Bangladesh. Why the owners were reluctant to pick you?

I have no idea. Maybe it is because of my age. How old is Watson? He has scored two centuries. I am 39 and still scoring hundreds.

You call yourself Universe Boss. What do you actually mean?

As you know, they used to call me World Boss.

Who used to call you like that?

The world, man! The World’s Boss, the most dominant boss in cricket -- to be able to do so much within cricket and outside cricket. You have to stand up and fight for your rights. Most players don’t do such things.
I have opened the doors for the cricketers to believe in life and enjoy the life while playing cricket. I can still dominate the game. I have done that within the world. I need a new task, so I take the space to the Universe. And then eventually, I start to fight with the aliens up there now. I have to fight bowlers in Jupiter, Mars and in all these places now. So, I am the Universe Boss, always.

You have actually bossed over Rashid Khan, the best bowler in the IPL. How did you do that? Was there a secret?

There was no secret. He was bowling to the best player in the world. I have played against him quite a few times. He is the top T20 spinner right now. I have to give him credit for that. His passion for the game is fantastic. He will always inspire more spinners within the game and T20 cricket is also about spinners. Spinners will dominate T20s.

You are 39. You are in the World Cup. Where do you think your career is heading?

The World Cup is coming next year. We had to qualify for the World Cup. We will see what happens after that (the World Cup).

You took a brilliant catch but it is said your fielding and running between the wickets are a problem?

No, no. I am the quickest person between the wickets, what are you talking about?

But you don’t take 2nd and third run?

Only because it would not be on. If it is on, I will take even four.

You speak about Attitude on your Twitter handle. Do you wear attitude on your sleeve?

It’s a clothing and fashion brand and I am a brand ambassador of that. I don’t have attitude man, I am passionate.

No attitude, fine. What about the controversies? You are linked to so many of them...

(Laughs). I am a good man, I am a great man, unless you write something controversial and bad about me.
Life is good, man, I can’t complain. None (controversies) actually came my way in the last few years. I’ve sued them all.

How do you explain comments like ‘I’ve a broad bat’ and ‘don’t blush baby’?

Like I said, I have sued all of them and I won’t say anything.

You have celebrated the anniversary of ‘don’t blush baby’ comment. What about that?

I don’t remember all that.

Do you think women journalists are wary of interviewing you ever since?

It’s very important for women to do men’s work as well. There are some great women cricketers as well. We need to highlight them. I don’t know about the women journalists.

Ian Chappell said you should be banned?

Who’s Ian Chappell?

So many bowlers are wary of bowling to you. Who is the bowler you are wary of facing?

The bowlers are worried, not Chris Gayle. My back is broad you know. I’m strong.

What about the West Indies cricket? Where the Caribbean cricket is headed to?

The youngsters are coming up. We’re in a rebuilding process. It is going to take a while, it is not going to be over overnight. We’ve lost a lot of experienced players but life goes on. No player is going to play forever. At some stage, everybody has to depart the game. I will continue to wish West Indies cricket all the best.

Ian Chappel was one of the greatest captains in the history of cricket and a world class batsman Chris. You - on the other hand - are a slogger and a mercenary and not fit to tie his shoes laces.

Gayle is a much more significant and a better player than Chappell was overall.

Gayle is the greatest T20 player of all time, a top-class ODI player and has the same Test average as Chappell on top of also contributing with the ball.

But I'm sure plenty of the usual Test match brigade who don't know anything about the relevant stats will keep making ignorant comments to support their ideology.

Ian Chappel was one of the greatest test captain and a very important name in cricket history. Gayle was a very good T20 players , nothing more, not that important otherwise. Ian Chappel has not been very popular in India because he has not been involved in IPL and not afraid of talking the truth, even about Indian cricket.

So Ian Chappel is allowed to express his views however stupid they may be but if Gayle says something people get so offended and start commenting what he has done for cricket?

Gayle is spot on here he plays lives a carefree life and enjoys on and off the field, if it hurts sentiments of some people so be it who cares about such uptight people anyways..

Chappel was famous back in his days when cricket was limited, now cricket has a much wider audience than during Chappell’s time and Gayle is more popular than Chappel..

Era’s are different so let’s not compare the players or their legacies however Gayle is spot on here Chappel gives his opinions which is fine and is his right however to me his opinions sometimes are crap
And don’t need worth mentioning.

Sport is about opinions. I strongly disagree with yours. What is Gayle famous for? His T-20 exploits and his big hitting. At test match level, he was Ok, nothing more, despite his 300.

Chappel on the other hand played in an era that was tough. He was a great captain and a world class player. Subsequently, he has been a vocal and respected pundit. Gayle on the other hand is a leering clown who talks nonsense. If you had a vote from cricket fans around the world - and not IPL fans - Chappel would be rated as a more significant cricketing figure.

Those running down Gayle, do you have any idea about his test record? How many have scored 2 300s in test cricket?

Gayle being just a slogger and a mercenary is one of the biggest lies in cricket. He’s done so much for the West Indies in all forms including tests and he continues to represent WI to this day.

He’s more loyal and has done more for the Windies then some of his other team mates.

Even as a test player only, Gayles pedigree is significant.

He averaged 45+ as an opener for almost 100 Tests. Certainly a record to be happy about

He is severely underrated as a test player

A pretty cringeworthy interview.

He averages literally the exact same as Chappell in Tests despite playing later on against better bowling, as part of a weak side that was often under pressure. In addition to this he has quite a few wickets on top.

Not to mention he is the GOAT in T20. He is by any metric a much bigger player than Chappell.

These so-called Test fans keep proving me right.

They don't even know Test cricket.

I know and watch more Test Cricket in an year than they probably will in ten.

It's just about trying to seem smart by parroting disparaging views of other formats.

Gayle is an all-format star, and quite a decent all-rounder before his back went.

Leaving aside his playing career, I always feel that his arrogance comes off as cringeworthy and embarrassing rather than cool, which is what he is usually going for.

I mean, the guy literally named a baby after something inappropriate he said to a female interviewer and he still doesn’t even seem remotely sorry for it.

He is only one of the four test players to have scored two triple hundreds. He deserves a bit more respect. When you look at his average + his strike rate for someone who played in the 2000s (tougher than post 2010 era) he was a legendary opener. His achievements in test cricket allowed him to utilise his abilities in the shorter form of the game.

Chappell was carried by a few superior ATG bats with him, whereas Gayle only had Lara.

First of all that his nothing to do with his cricketing ability.

Secondly, this is another example of the ignorance I'm talking about. His daughter is not actually called Blush, her name is Kryssalina.

I already mentioned I’m not talking about cricketing ability here. Celebrities can’t be scrutinized over their public behaviour?

The man is a bigot, has no respect for women and proved it perfectly when he spoke to the female interviewer. I mean there are kids watching this game, does he really want to encourage that sort of an attitude?? He's suppose to be a role model. Regardless I don't consider him a legend by any means just an entertaining cricketer but people are entitled to their opinion. As far as comparisons with Chappell go I am not even going to dignify that with a response. Good day.

But your example is also based on literally fake news. How is Gayle to blame if you are basing your criticism on incorrect facts?

Not responding just means you don't have a point.

And his personality has nothing to do with his cricketing ability.

Like I said you're entitled to your opinion, I honestly don't think he's that good and his personality magnifies my dislike towards him. Quite a cringeworthy interview ugh. The term 'legend' is used quite loosely nowadays.

Disrespectful comments towards Chappell but have to admit Gayle can be entertaining with his comments.
