Don't know if this topic has been discussed before but I would like to ask who have been the best coaches of international teams(head or specialist) and even domestic sides(of county and Sheffield Shield).
I know that a captain leads the team on the ground and the coach is not the one who should solely get the reward for his team's achievements, but I feel like a good coach with a good vision, skills and work ethic can develop a side or even change the whole outlook/dynamics and culture of the team.

A prime example is Mike Hesson. Before he took over as NZ head coach, NZ was always hovering around in the middle of the rankings and were not really the team to beat and when they would do well, everyone would say that they are punching above their weight. He took over in a bizarre manner with ousting of Rosco. But then with all the criticism and abuse, he and BMac developed a team that is possibly getting stronger with every passing year.

John Buchanan probably had the best record of a coach with 2 WC wins and dozens of series wins but that had a lot to do with the players available to Aus at that time. He was often criticized by Warne and others for him being an unorthodox coach who used stats and graphs etc.

And who are the best active coaches in the world atm according to you

For me, Hesson, Graham Ford, Jason Gillespie, Steve Rixon, Phil Simmons, Ray Jennings, Rahul Dravid, Alan Butcher, Andy Flower, Shane Bond and Paul Nixon are pretty good. Corrie van Zyl and Geoff Marsh are also pretty underrated coaches.

andy flower - what he did with England
gary Kirsten - with indian
Lance Klusner - dolphins
mike hesson - with New Zealand and hopefully he becomes Pakistan future coach after WC
Jason Gillespie - sussex

From an Indian perspective - John Wright and Kirsten.

Stephen Fleming also wasn’t too bad in IPL.

Justin Langer is the best coach in the world currently. Period. How he modified Aussies from underdogs in January to "hot favourites" in April is simply astonishing!

Good lineup. I will probably add Trevor Bayliss as well considering his success especially in LOIs with Eng. It was probably one of the biggest turnarounds in 2-4 years in one format.

What Trevor Bayliss is doing with England is amazing.

What a turnaround.

Always straight to the point and clear about his modern day tactics.

Langer is also doing a good job.

In ODIs yes but in Tests, Bayliss has overseen one disaster after another.

Stephen Fleming also wasn’t too bad in IPL.

Fleming is very astute and a very knowledgeable about tactics and strategies. Knows how to get the best out of what is available to him. But he is not a big fan of inducting youth into the team as shown by his interviews in IPL. He is more inclined towards having experienced and seasoned players something that might not sit well in international cricket.

If you had asked after CT17, it would have been Mickey Arthur!

John Wright yes a very well respected coach.
Kirsten's stint with SA wasn't really that good tbh even though he was coaching arguably the best team in the world. Plus his record in T20is and T20s has been pretty abysmal.

Arthur's record in Tests for Pak is extraordinarily poor. He almost always gets the team dynamics in Asia wrong esp in Tests.

Not that good of a record in Tests indeed, however he's surely not as woeful as Mickey Arthur in Tests.

Arthur it looks like has zero clue about conditions, what kind of
a team or XI to pick.

I think anyone can be better than Mickey in Tests, at least make us win at our supposed fort and home. In fact, the team would do better if there's no formal coach. Our players are good enough to win in the UAE if Mickey is not around to disturb the tactics and team balance.

Trevor, Langer can revolutionize our ODI side.

Greg Chappell

Chappell did several good things for India. A lot of younger players developed during his time. Fielding improved a lot. Also India who had problem chasing , chased 17 consecutive times in OD winnings them which is a record.

It all depends upon the set up.

If the country has a proper organised set up , Graham Ford and Andy Flower can do well.

Steve Rixon and Simmons are excellent with new up coming players.

Pakistan needs to change the entire team of coaches . They need some one tactically sound , who stays in the background , and tries to get best out of each person individually.

The way Coaches are ranked in PP, John Bchucanan has to be the greatest coach ever & Ravi Shastri in contemporary cricket.

For me, the best coach in last few years combined has been Hathurasinghe. After Bangladesh, he has won a Test series in SAF with this SRL team within a year of taking charge.

I'm surprised none of you have named hathurusingha. The guy introduced Bangladesh as a force to the world. Very astute coach who knows how to handle his players and get the best out of them.

Haturisinghe didn't transform Bangladesh. When Haturi became coach, our key players Tamim, Mushy and Riad hit their peak and Mashrafe was injury free for a while.

But i will admit he was one of those coaches that helped our boys have the same degree of self-belief no other coaches did.

One issue with Haturi tho, he has created drama when it comes to team selection. He has received slack from everyone because of this.
