What's new

Who are the Fab 4 of bowling in cricket?

Starc, Josh, Boult and Rabada.
They are the only one to be consistently good in two or three format if not great.
Others bowlers are good in only one format.

Rabada, Hazlewood, Starc and Boult.

Only including ones under 30.

I think Rabada, Hazlewood, Starc and Boult are definitely right the now the fab 4 of pace bowling. You could argue about Hasan Ali but from my estimation he hasn't played enough Test cricket.

Bhuvi
Shami
Ashwin
Jadeja

Just kidding. IHMO, here are fab four:-
Starc
Rabada
Hazlewood
Boult

Test Ranking top 5

Rabada, Anderson, Jadeja, Ashwin, Hazlewood

ODI Ranking top 5

Hasan, Tahir, Bumrah, Boult, Hazlewood

T20 Ranking top 5

Based on their individual ranking across different formats

Hazlewood, Starc, Boult, Rabada are in top 20 atleast. But bowlers are different cup of tea.

Sodhi, Wasim, Rashid Khan, Bumra, Santner

Have the opinions changed in any way?

For me Rabada, Starc, Hazelwood and ???

Really tempted to say Bhuvneshwar is the 4th one but there are others like cummins and Hasan Ali too.

What a about Tom curran ? i know its just a 1 match. But i sense something special about this bowler.. just like Hassan Ali..

Oh boy Bhuvneshwar has been below par. At one time i was considering calling him a part of fab 4 of bowling.

Rabada is the only name that comes to mind that can go ahead in all three formats.

The rest are hot and cold.

Mohammad Amir
Mohammad Abbas
Hassan Ali
Faheem Ashraf

Whats the scenario now? Abbas in it yet or is it too early?

Rabada, Boult, Hasan Ali, Bumrah?

Obviously this is taking Tests + ODI into account.

Anderson, Rabada, Boult and Ashwin.

How can Ashwin be in that? he has been exposed in limited over cricket and out of team. In tests too he only contributes at home and most probably will be replaced by Jadeja for next tour after his performance in England.

The best four, young pace bowlers are Rabada, Boult, Starc and Hazlewood. Abbas is probably the rookie of the year but needs to keep this up for another year or so before he can be compared with those four.

Anderson, Rabada, Boult and Ashwin.

Ashwin?! :)))

I think another phainty in SENA by Australia's reserve batsmen act as the catalyst for a rude awakening for the handful of Ashwin-fans still dreaming.

Bumrah over Starc and Hazlewood? Why don't people think before they simply throw out names of their countrymen?

Still has the highest number of wickets across all formats among all spinners who are playing today.

Yes but we are looking for fab 4 equivalent of batting who are fab 4 because can perform in every condition. I am sure if you taking nation bias out its a no brainier Lyon is better off spiner for all conditions.

Both has potential with bumrah a GUN ODIs bowlers. But to be in top 4 both dont qualify as they must be sure performers in all 3 formats.

I would probably pick Heraath myself but in my opinion Lyon is better over all bowler than Ashwin. But I will give credit where its due I will be fool to not play Ashwin on spinning tracks! He will be in my side as long as the match is in Asian conditions and first one to go out as soon as its in any other conditions. For such a good bowler in one condition its a shame he does nothing anywhere else.

If it was just about tests I would be very tempted to pick Herath over Ashwin - even though Herath has also had his struggles in some countries.

But the reason I couldn't pick Herath is that he has hardly achieved anything in LOIs. He doesn't even have 100 wickets across LOIs.

It's the same reason why I didn't pick Lyon over Ashwin. Lyon might just be better than Ashwin in tests at this time. But he has a mere 18 wickets in LOIs as compared to 202 wickets picked up by Ashwin in comparison.

Total wickets tally of the 3:

Ashwin: 538
Herath: 522
Lyon: 336

Well herath didn't play ODIs out of his own choice and will steel walk into their ODI team if he wanted to. But on odd occasions he did play he didnt do badly at all and he had a lot more successes in different conditions away from home (Asia). I would even pick Yasir above ashwin but i wont pick him in top 4 for same reason he is not a starter for Pakistan in ODIs. But I understand where you coming from though you are struggling to find better options.

See, by no means am I saying that Ashwin doesn't have weaknesses.

But the fact of the matter is that so does every other spinner in the world right.

Herath averages 54 in India. 64 in NZ and 43 in England

Lyon averages 40 in SA, 54 in UAE.

Ashwin averages 46 in SA and 54 in Australia.

Even Shane Warne - the greatest spinner ever averaged 43 in India and 40 in WI.

So there isn't a single spinner who has done well in all conditions. Not just among Ashwin and his contemporaries but even the best spinner of all time hasn't had success everywhere.

So at the end of it all, I went with the guy who had the highest wickets and has had success with both the white and red ball. Ashwin is literally the only option there.

But there was a difference in those spinners and Ashwin! Ashwin is even unable to do a holding job for his team and keep having to be dropped. Yes some great spinners of the past couldn't take wickets in some conditions but they still did some kind of job for the team. But I take your point on this thread.

:))

'The Bowling Bradman' is not worth the dust on Imran Khan's old bowling shoes. Stop being ridiculous by making an illogical comparison between the two.

So you are okay with hassan in the fab 4 but not bumrah.
If hasan ali is there then bumrah is a certainty.

I already named my four and no Pakistani is in it.

Yes but Lyon's numbers across the world are no better. Avg of 40 in SA and UAE, mid-30s in Eng and India. The numbers over the world are pretty much the same for both Lyon and Ashwin. I picked Ashwin because of his overall lower avg, higher wickets tally and added bonus of batting.

Plus Ashwin was a much better LOI bowler than Lyon ever has been

So you pick the bowling "Fab Four" based on how well they can bat. Embarrassing. Just accept that Ashwin has never been the world's premier spinner and does not hold that title right now. Shah, Lyon and Herath are all ahead as test spinners and Ashwin cannot make his own country's ODI XI so his alleged ODI excellence is irrelevant.

Idk if this is an image problem that Ashwin has. Or if the expectations of people from him are too high considering his home performances. But apart from Australia, Ashwin has done well everywhere else. Even in terms of containment he does a better job than Lyon, Herath, Yasir, etc.

Yasir have actually won Pakistan 2 matches in England in that drawn series, In one he took 10 wickets and in one 5fer in the second innings without him Pakistan would not have won he also had bad performances but he did at least actually make some difference for the team in some matches. How many such performances Ashwin has outside Asia? I can include Yasir in Fab 4 because he doesnt get into the side in other formats.

This logic doesn't make any sense to sense. Why on earth should we judge the quality of a spinner based on how many 5fers he has in England?

Yasir has won Pak a match in England. Yes. But he has also failed to win Pak matches in UAE. Which is a lot worse in my opinion.

Ashwin has won India 3 times as many matches as Yasir has won Pak.

Look, it's simple. Look for any spinner today who has over 500 international wickets. There is only 1 name. Ravichandran Ashwin.

If we were talking about just tests, Lyon might have come close. But since we are comparing across formats there is no competition to Ashwin.

This logic doesn't make any sense to sense. Why on earth should we judge the quality of a spinner based on how many 5fers he has in England?

Yasir has won Pak a match in England. Yes. But he has also failed to win Pak matches in UAE. Which is a lot worse in my opinion.

This forum goes on about performing in ICC touemamtes, if you look at Ashwin stats from 2013 CT and 2015 WC in England and Australia respectively, it might give some posters heart attacks as they tell us he can't perform outside of India and is rubbish in LO:srt .

No Captain will ever want to go in with a spinner knowing he cant win you a match, The reason why Ashwin keeps getting dropped because it so obvious he cant perform outside Asia. He has had a long careers and a lot of matches but have failed in every single one and not won his team even one match. This suggest me that he never will so what is the point of picking? Inida will probably start wit Jadeja in Australia.

He is good in Asia probably better than all others except Jadeja and Herath. Jadeja have out performed him in Asia when it comes to average and strike rate so even if we go by your argument where you are basing everything in Asia where most spinners will do you have to consider Jadeja as well as currently he is more of a all format player than Ashwin is.

Regarding Yasir UAE is not a spin heaven wicket as India. And he has done well for UAE conditions there is no reason to believe Ashwin will do any better considering how drop able he becomes as soon as wicket dont turn square.

My overall point is that even I am not sure who I will pick as a spinner in my fab 4 so I understand your over all point if you want to give more importance to Asian conditions then maybe we can either go with Ashwin, Jadeja or Herath.

Bump!

I will say it's Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah. The fourth name can be Jofra Archer or Shaheen Afridi but they will have to play more to prove.

Don't think any of the bowlers from late 2000s U-19 batch stands a chance now to attain stature for themselves like Dale Steyn or even James Anderson in test cricket.

Cummins will surely have a better career than anderson. Much better all condition bowler. I expect him to finish as a top tier atg. Rabada will probably retire with better stats than donald. I think bumrah will have a shoaib like career. Qualitatively good but quantitavely not so much.

I meant late 2000s U-19 batch. Cummins is not part of it.

Cummins, Lyon, Bumrah and Rabada

In the near future, Shaheen and Jofra will overtake Lyon and possibly Rabada

Was going to post this.

The difference is that Boult isn't exactly from the same age group.

I think if we consider his age group, then him, Mitchell Starc, Mohammad Shami and Josh Hazelwood are probably the four standouts.

Cummins
Rabada
Archer
Bumrah

Went for players who around the same age. Starc and Boult are terrific bowlers but they have been around for a bit longer than these guys.

These 4 are terrific bowlers in all formats.

The rule for Fab four is you must pick players from the similar age and they should be playing all formats as well.
