Inspired by the Steve Smith thread where the OP labelled Smith the undisputed batsmen of his generation.

For mine it's Kohli, none of the other 3 contenders come close when you consider all formats and give the the appropriate weighting. He's a distant first in ODIs and T20s and a close second to Smith in Tests.

I think it's a close race between Kohli and AB. Who ever wins the WC final 2019 for his team will be the batsman of this generation.

AB is from a different generation.

This is for the Kohli, Smith, Kane and Root generation.

Smith was never close to taking that title. He doesn't make Australia's T20 side on merit and he's pretty average in ODIs. He's an all time great in Tests and that's it, being great in one format doesn't make you the best of your generation.

If Smith maintains his average and the lead he has on Kohli in Tests then you simply won't have an indisputable player of the generation. He's too far ahead in the format that is still regarded as the pinnacle of the game by most fans.

But right now. it's advantage Kohli. Who knows if Smith will even be able to regain his form after all this.

It's not considered the pinnacle of the game by most fans. It's considered that by purists. Hell, there are boards who are actually doing away with Test cricket and playing the bare minimum. But here you are calling it the pinnacle.

Pinnacle of the game in the sense that most people will rate performances in Test cricket higher than any other format. For instance, even today, most fans would consider someone like Rahul Dravid a far superior player than Michael Bevan simply because the former was a better Test cricketer.

World Cup is the pinnacle of the game.

Test cricket is dying and will be played sparsley in 20 years time.

But in tests Kohli is not far behind Smith either as the recent SA series for both showed. Add in T20s and ODIs and Kohli does have a case

Kohli just needs one good series in England to surpass Smith IMO. There will be nothing left to discredit him in Test cricket.

This is for someonee you can tell didn't give much importance to Test cricket a while back, now he's one of the best in the world.
 
Kohli is the undisputed all round Champion Bat. :shh

Smith dominates em all in tests. :smith

It's Kohli, easily the best over the three formats.

Smith's a bit better test batsman. But think tests have got easier these days, pitches are flat to try and last five days. In ODIs at least even if pitches get flat, all that means is you have to score more and score them quicker. If anything I'd go far to say I think in general test batting is easier than ODI at this point of time. So many times now in tests batsmen just aren't pushed out of their comfort zones, they just stay in, make no unforced errors and score big. In LOI at least there's the pressure of hitting at a high as SR as possible or keeping up with req. run rate, and not a massive home advantage.

The only places I feel have competitive test pitches these days are SA and Eng. The rest it's about not making errors and accumulating as much as possible, or which side is more used to conditions (though still a flat pitch).
 
In Tests it's between Root and Smith. Smith does play some good knocks on tough wickets, but not as consistent as Root though. What Smith does well though is the ability to score heavily on lesser tracks, Kohli has started doing that over the last two years. But he has been playing mostly at home, I'm waiting for him to shape games away like these two.

In ODI's though Kohli is undisputed. Then again I get confused. The likes of Amla where labeled as bilateral bullies when they where winning everywhere. Now that India is starting to taste that it seems these bilaterals are important after all. Root is not far behind though.

I think it will be two or three years before we see consistency. What generation will he fall under?

Rabada made his debut in 2015 though. Basically I group him with Philander (2011). By 2020 he will have played in this decade for 5 years. That's long enough imo, he has 140 wickets already. By 2020 he should have 200 wickets at this rate. That's a lot of wickets to classify him in the 2020 group.

Makram on the other hand won't be a top 10/5 batsman until 2020. He'll score a bulk of his runs post that period. Similar to AB and Amla making their debut 4 years after Sangakkara, I classify them in the same generation. There was still 6 years left in that decade when they made their debuts. It's not the same with Makram I guess.
 
For now its between Kohli and Smith but i rate Smith higher for now. Kohli needs another great year to close in with Smith. English bowlers won't make it easy for him.
Smith is on the verge GOAT status (he's already a ATG) , it will be interesting to see how he performms on International arena after 1 year gap.

It appears so. The poise and maturity he shows everytime is just phenomenal. Combine that with his talent and discipline and you have star captain batsman for the next decade
 
King Kohli is the undisputed batsman of this generation, only someone very very delusional will put smith ahead of Kohli when all formats of the game are considered
 
On a serious note Kohli without a doubt. All 3 formats considered he is head and shoulders above the rest.

In tests Smith is ahead.

Not if he continues to open. I'd like to see him take AB's slot at 4. His ability to move the game forward without taking risks is incredible. Has a tighter technique than AB.
Will have to see how he fares in Lanka though.
 
I feel smith will come better player in year time and has high chance of winning world cup with his batting. (If he does he should not be questioned about his odi stats). In tests he already is goat.

Root cannot make a score more than 50 in tests even when in form. How can he be considered a good enough test batsmen?
 
Kohli scored the most runs in test in last 2 years.

And I don't want to even bother checking who scored the most runs in ODis, with average of close to 100. Smith not in top 10, and Smith is no where to be seen in T20.
 
There is absolutely no option but to say Kohli. Kohli has shut every competition off.
 
Anybody not choosing Kohli is in denial or delusional lol. This is the most one sided poll in PP history. Kohli is so far ahead if the rest it's not funny.

Kohli without a competition in ODI and T-20 , in tests though perhaps Smith is ahead of him by some distance but eventually he will surely catch-up with him .
 
Across all three categories - it surely has to be Kohli! His only two competitors as the complete package were not listed: ABD & Amla. I would pick ABD over Kohli if there had been an option. Kohli is certainly the best out of the choices that were presented!

ABD is the only true competitor to Kohli now, Amla before his decline was even better than Kohli in the past. The rest are not even in the discussion
 
Considering all of the formats, and coping with pressure situations, VK is inarguably the best batsman of this generation.

And what will that prove? Kohli winning this poll on a pakistani forum shows that people have voted for kohli despite him being an Indian, you were not just wrong but very very delusional when you called smith the batsman of this generation and you were rightfully called out by the OP. Smith will never be remembered as the batsman of this generation, bookmark this.

This forum mainly caters to SC fans majority of whom place equal or even greater value on LOI formats. So poll results on here are pretty much meaningless if you truly want to gauge the value of a player from rest of the world perspective. It’s not surprising at all that Pakistani or BD fans would vote for Kohli.

If you are so confident in Kohli being the best player, you don’t really need to defend him so hard you know ? :P

And why would the opinions of sc fans matter any less than rest of the world fans? Also how are so sure the rest of the world would pick smith over kohli, did you conduct such a poll anywhere? Also I am not defending kohli, just exposing your cluelessness

Won a series in SA on a tough track with a scintillating hundred. His team was 70/4 or something, completely took the game away from us.
Did the same against the Aussies on a green track in England.

He is the only player of the 'big' four I've seen consistently score runs on tough tracks. He reminds me of the original big four Kallis, Smith, Amla and AB. He makes cricket looks so easy, he doesn't have that ruthlessness those guys had though. But I'm sure he'll get it right. The conditions are not the problem, but the mental side of the game.

That's something you can work on. Having the skill to play in any conditions is not something that can be learned. It's either you have it or you don't. That's why Root reminds of the big four. He has it in him to play in any conditions.

SC fans are the future of cricket. Test cricket is a dying joke of a format, there's a reason Smith isn't rated that highly outisde Eng and Aus. People don't carr how well he tuk tuk for 5 days.

That is just ignorance now. I can probably count 10+ non-SC peeps who would say otherwise and hardly any that would say Smith is the best. Warne, M. Nicholas, S. Pollock, G. Smith (all said it in comms recently), KP, M. Vaughn, Ian Bell, B. Julian, and literally everyone else.

I think you have selective hearing issues.. In India vs Eng series, Shastri was going off on how VK is the best in the world etc. Botham immediately put him into his place by reminding about his English series. Athers and Hussain have also pointed out similar flaws.

Let's not go there route. Commies are paid to offer their opinions and quite often they say things the viewers would like to hear.

So I gave the example of multiple cricketers who said that about Virat on different instances but you reply back with one particular instance. Talk about selective hearing.

Don't think anybody has forgotten about his England blues, but even with them, he is comfortably regarded by most as the best in the world. Says a lot about how ahead he is as an all-format batsman in the world.

And about your last line - suit yourself, whatever makes you happy. Sure all these cricketers on twitter/live TV were entitled or forced to call Virat the best. A very delusional world you have built for yourself there.
