The tournament starts on 30th September when Northern take on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and features Pakistan's top players.

KPK look quite strong, they can field a virtual Pakistan attack.

Northern have several excellent white ball cricketers while Central Punjab have some youngsters that may cause some surprises.

I think the champion will be from those three.
 
Nothern look strong with balanced between new and old players
Khyber also look strong with the strong Pakistani bowling line up
 
I also hope central do quite well with the emergence of abdullah shaifque,irfan khan,qasim akram

I vote for Northern they were successful in prior year National T20 and were finalists in QEA. Overall a strong batting unit with some exciting players to watch out for.
 
I'm guessing the PCB will continue to do a decent length highlights package for Youtube after each game like last year.
 
Northern looks pretty strong again. They have got pretty much all basis covered despite the absence of Imad in first few matches.

Central Punjab is looking a much better T20 outfit than last year with few more dynamic young batsmen and also better depth and variety in the bowling attack with Qasim Akram providing decent 5th, 6th option in the form of off spin and left arm angle with Sohaibullah. However, they will obviously feel absence of Babar in the first leg and Saad Nasim will have to lead the side.

KPK has a lot of experience in both the departments so definitely would be a tough team.

Not to forget Balochistan punched much above their weight in last season and played pretty good cricket to reach the finals.

SP have 5 of the regular members of MS (Shan, Zeeshan, Khushdil, Ilyas and Irfan) from the last PSL season (Yet to be completed) where their team finished at the top of the table.

Sindh will be highly dependent upon Shrajeel, Saud to show his metal (Should play most matches as he is the vice captain), Sarfaraz's leadership experience and Mohammad Hasnain.
 
I am very sure Balochistan will be bottom of the table. Sindh, Central Punjab, and South Punjab will be between the 3rd and 5th positions with Northern and KPK battling it out for the top 2.

Essentially, taking a guess, I believe the table will look like this:

1. KPK
2. Northern
3. Sindh
4. South Punjab
5. Central Punjab
6. Balochistan

Given the format includes semi-final berths for the top 4, teams do not need to do particularly well. My predicted semi-finalists are the following:
KPK vs South Punjab
Northern vs Sindh

Finalists will be KPK vs Northern, with KPK going on to claim the trophy.
 
I feel Northern should do the job this time - not much between them and Kpk for that matter so a little effort and they could be the winners.

PCB should make sure squads are well balanced - not sure how the players are divided amongst squads.
 
Don't know why Malik, Hafeez and Shaheen have been drafted to KPK. Some of the other teams are not as strong.
 
Northern will make finals but I have a funny feeling central Punjab might sneak a win in the finals

Agreed. Same should be the case in PSL I think, Haider Ali's fast development is due to him opening for Northern in 7-8 FC matches and then carrying on at no 3 for PZ. Yes some are not necessarily new ball players but still top 4 are the numbers which makes players learn the art of batting and after wards once developed decently they can be put into their perfect positions.
 
Balochistan were the finalist last year, so i am backing them UNDERDOGS:warner

In psl that would be hard but in the doesmtic that should be easy
 
I'm more excited for this than the Pakistan-Zimbabwe series frankly.

Six regional teams are also much easier to follow than UBL/WAPDA rubbish.
 
Northern has a perfect T20 line-up; probably missing one anchor; otherwise the best possible combination with three PAK starting bowlers. If Amin can stay long at one end, they’ll win this tournament.

Basically this should be the purpose of this tournament.

We all know PSL is business but national t20 cup should be a platform for youngsters.

But we still have some seniors like Salman Butt who wanted to play in first xi as an opener.
 
Very excited for the tournament.

Muhammad Wasim promotes younger players and hence I'm always hopeful that his team does well in the tournament.
 
Not sure what is the point of the National T20 Cup when we have the PSL.


Kind of like someone going out and getting a Suzuki Mehran when they already own a Beamer...

Difference is PCB controls selections. Lack of International players as well so more spots for youngsters. Finally, in a world with just PSL and no National T20, there is no platform to scout talent for the next PSL edition.
 
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab eye National T20 Cup trophy

Multan, 28 September 2020:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab are two formidable sides with the potential to win the National T20 Cup First XI tournament, which begins on Wednesday at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with quality players at their disposal.

The two teams will be looking to better their performances from the last season’s edition, in which their journey was cut short to the semi-final stage.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s campaign in this season begins from the tournament opener as they take on defending champions Northern. They were beaten by Northern by three runs in the first semi-final of the last National T20 Cup and will be eager to avenge that defeat.

Southern Punjab play their opening match later in the day against Central Punjab.

As the tournament will be played on double-league basis, the two teams will meet on 3 October at Multan Cricket Stadium and on 12 October at Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, which will be broadcasted live on PTV Sports along with other 31 matches of the much-awaited tournament.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Mohammad Rizwan-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will enter the tournament as arguably the most experienced side with the likes of Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz at their disposal. The trio have played T20 leagues and tournaments around the world and remain richly experienced in the format with a staggering 932 T20 appearances between them.

Left-armer Junaid Khan is another experienced performer in the side. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be relying on Fakhar Zaman to provide them flying starts along with Sahibzada Farhan.

Shoaib, Iftikhar Ahmed and Rizwan himself will lend support to the middle-order. Rizwan who was named Pakistan’s man-of-the-series in the Test series in England also had an impressive run in last year’s National T20 Cup scoring 215 runs in six innings at 43 runs per innings to occupy the fifth spot in the most runs table.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also have the young U19 wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Haris who played some impressive knocks in this year’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Haris has already been marked as a player with a bright future and this tournament is set to provide him the kind of exposure that can help him further develop his skills.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also have a formidable bowling attack at their disposal, led by Wahab and Junaid. The hugely impressive Shaheen Shah Afridi, who delivered a stunning six-wicket spell for Hampshire in the Vitality Blast T20 Cup, will be the star in the line-up. The left-arm pace bowlers quartet also includes Usman Shinwari, who took 10 wickets for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in last year’s edition of the tournament including a five-wicket haul.

Lending support to the impressive pace attack would be leg-spinner Mohammad Mohsin and left-arm spinner Zohaib Khan. The two are also handy batsmen with the ability of playing the big shots in the lower-order.

Pacer Arshad Iqbal, who represented Karachi Kings at the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, is another youngster in the ranks who would be aiming to learn from the experienced pace attack around him in a highly competitive environment.

Southern Punjab

Shan Masood-led Southern Punjab is full of youngsters and players with great potential. Shan, who would be leading the Multan Sultans in November’s HBL PSL 2020 play-offs, will be shouldering the responsibility of providing his side a brisk start along with the hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman Zeeshan Ashraf, who was arguably the biggest story of last year’s domestic season.

The 28-year-old was the top-scorer in last year’s National T20 Cup for Second XIs where his big hitting abilities were noticed by the First XI team management. Zeeshan graduated to first-class cricket where his impressive showing earned him a place in the Multan Sultans’ HBL PSL 2020 squad as a wild card Diamond Category pick.

Southern Punjab have a formidable middle-order with Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah and Sohaib Maqsood available as a trio that can play the big shots. Sohaib and Khushdil especially are renowned for their six-hitting ability.

Khushdil, who is also representing Sultans in the HBL PSL 2020, smashed a scintillating 70 not out (29 balls, six 6s, five 4s) against Lahore Qalandars in the second last group match of the season.

Southern Punjab have firepower in the lower-order in Aamir Yamin and Bilawal Bhatti, who are both likely to take the new ball with the seasoned left-armer Rahat Ali another potent bowling option.

Mohammad Abbas is likely to get another chance to showcase his bowling skills in the T20 format, while the bowling squad is provided further depth with the presence of the veteran left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan and the upcoming right-arm pacer Mohammad Ilyas.

Southern Punjab, who narrowly lost on a final’s berth in last year’s National T20 Cup in a thrilling semi-final defeat to Balochistan, have in their ranks two impressive spinners in left-armer Umer Khan and the right-arm leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood.

Zahid collected nine wickets in five games last year and Southern Punjab would be once again relying on his wicket taking abilities in the middle overs of the 20-over contests.

Multan, 29 September 2020:

Pakistan’s best T20 cricketers will be back in action as the much-awaited National T20 Cup First XI tournament kicks off on Wednesday at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The 33-match tournament, which will be broadcast live in its entirety in High Definition on PTV Sports, marks the beginning of competitive cricket in the country after more than six months and, as such, serves as the curtain-raiser for the 2020-21 domestic season.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is the first cricket board to announce and organise a complete domestic season in these unprecedented and difficult Covid-19 times. The PCB has made comprehensive arrangements for the upcoming season to protect the wellbeing and livelihood of the domestic cricketers. Due to the ongoing pandemic and to ensure health and safety of all competitors, the tournament will be played behind closed doors under strict Covid-19 protocols.

The tournament will be played in two phases: the first one running from 30 September to 6 October in Multan and the second phase to be staged from 9-18 October in Rawalpindi.

With two ACC Asia Cups and ICC Men’s T20 World Cups scheduled for the next two years, this year’s National T20 Cup First XI tournament will be played on double-league basis to provide adequate preparation to the players who are likely to represent the Pakistan men’s national team in these events.

The tournament also provides an opportunity for the country’s best short format cricketers to impress the national selectors and, also, the HBL Pakistan Super League franchise owners and management ahead of the Player Draft for the 2021 season, which is scheduled to be held in November.

With a coveted trophy and a total prize money of PKR9million on offer, Northern, who will be led by Shadab Khan until their captain Imad Wasim (currently engaged in the Vitality Blast T20 tournament in the UK) joins the side in Rawalpindi, will be eager to defend their title.

And, the other five teams will be fighting tooth and nail to secure berths in the final of the tournament, which will be played at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on 18 October.

Balochistan will aim to take the next step after they ended as runner-up in the last edition of the tournament, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab, who managed to reach the semi-finals, will be keen on bettering their last performances.

Central Punjab and Sindh will be under special focus as their last National T20 Cup, played at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium, was cut short for their failure to qualify for the semi-finals.

In the Multan-leg Central Punjab will be led by Saad Nasim, Central Punjab’s regular captain Babar Azam will join the side for the Rawalpindi-leg.

Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq, bowling coach Waqar Younis, Head of High Performance Coaching, Grant Bradburn, and Head of International Player Development, Saqlain Mushtaq, will watch the matches as part of their responsibility to scout the young talent, help the coaching staff and bridge communication gap between the domestic cricket and High Performance Centre.

Balochistan captain Haris Sohail: “We are really excited and want to give a better performance than last year when we lost the final. Our aim is to win the trophy and we have worked hard in the build-up. Last year, we played great cricket and it was only a passage of five to six overs in the final where we could not play good cricket and that is where I feel we lost the final.

“We have a strong top and middle-order while in Yasir Shah and Kashif Bhatti we have quality spinners, we have a strong pace attack with the addition of Umaid Asif.”

Saad Nasim captain Central Punjab: “It is a big opportunity for me to lead Central Punjab in the first leg of the tournament; we have some exciting U19 talent that has given new energy to our squad. We are determined to put the disappointing performances of last year behind us and target a semi-final spot, of course with an eye on the tournament trophy by playing the final. We have good combination of youth and experience. Kamran Akmal and Abid Ali will lead the batting charge with their experience and quality.

“Bilal Asif and Naseem Shah are quality bowlers in our ranks and we have upcoming players like Rizwan Hussain, Abdullah Shafiq, Qasim Akram and Sohaibullah. We also have quality all-rounders in Zafar Gohar and Usman Qadir. We have a balanced side full of talent and youngsters who have a bright future. Our aim is to play positive cricket and make it all the way in the tournament.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Mohammad Rizwan: “Our team has all bases covered as we have strong batting and bowling departments. We are known for playing an aggressive brand of cricket and many people are rating us as favourites.

“We play Northern, the defending champions, in the opening match of the tournament and it is going to be good competition as both teams are highly competitive.”

Northern vice-captain Shadab Khan: “Leading Northern in the Multan-leg is a big opportunity for me, which I am aiming to grab with both hands. We are the title defenders and our team and the combination is pretty much the same as the last year. The boys are preparing hard and are looking in good shape despite returning to cricket after some time, which makes me confident that we will be able to defend our title.

“Two youngsters I am looking forward to making a mark in this tournament are Zeeshan Malik, who played with me at the U19 level, and Haider Ali, who could not play last year but is all set to play a vital role in our team this season.”

Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed: “I think in our team, Sharjeel Khan will play a key role. He is a dashing batsman and stroke player and when he plays well he makes a match one-sided. In T20 format, you need to perform in both batting and bowling departments, we have balance and experience in both departments.

“We would aim to gain and then sustain momentum with an eye on the semi-finals; T20 is a kind of format where momentum is the key and if we get that early we can go a long way in the tournament.”

Southern Punjab captain Shan Masood: “We are well-aware that this tournament is going to be highly competitive as all the top T20 players in the country are participating in it. With this tournament being played on double-league basis, what matters the most is how the teams finish and carry the momentum from here to the Rawalpindi-leg.

“I am very happy with the core of our team, which might not include big names but comprise youngsters who will be empowered and will be designated responsibilities in all departments. Our coach Abdur Rehman has put in a lot of thought in selecting this team, which provides us ample options depending on what side we play in which stadium. I am very confident that if we stick to our plans, we will play the final in Rawalpindi.”

National T20 Cup Second XI tournament:

The National T20 Cup for the Second XIs will be played at the Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Pakistan’s home of cricket, from 1-8 October. The tournament will be played on single-league basis to increase competition amongst the six Cricket Association Second XI teams as they will aim to put their foot on gas from the outset.

This tournament will further help the First XI teams gauge their up and coming cricketers from their Cricket Associations and, as such, will serve as a pathway for the players to graduate to the top domestic level.

These are training kits, if you take a look at training photos by PCB, they're wearing same gear in those as well

Last time main sponsor was Zong 4g, it was announced 2 days before the tournament but nothing so far about this

With 6 bats and 1 WK, Saif Badar likely to get some games playing at #5. Will love to watch him bat.
 
Northern and Central Punjab registered their first victories in the tournament. They both look like contenders.
 
Northern looks sure shot to qualify. Best batting lineup and best bowling lineup. Crucial allrounder Imad and fast bowler Amir are yet to play.

Haider looks set to be highest run scorer of the cup.

I was thinking the same. To have 30 group games, to only eliminate 2 teams sounds stupid.
 
Northern look a class apart from the other teams, with KPK looking the second best team.

Can't see Northern losing this tournament unless they have a major off-day.
 
On a side note, great to see the teams get more and more sponsors as the tournament progresses, every new sponsor is a dagger in the heart of Departmental cricket.
 
I don't see Northern losing. CP with Babar could have given them a good final but with the way things are they aren't going to make it.
 
I’m very impressed with the coaching job their HC has done. PCB should be keeping tabs on him and be in contention for the national HC job should Misbah not work out over the next year or so.

Goes to show if you have competent team management who select players based on merit and clearly defined roles then they can make a monster team out of relative unknowns.

100 percent I was watching his short vidoe were he was stating that umar amin batted down the order taking account Pakistan's top order and for him to have any chance if playing for Pakistan he has to bat in the middle order that's what you call foward planning

Exactly, and as for emotional investment I've never been as engaged in domestic cricket as I have since PCB's reforms. And judging from the online reaction, most fans feel the same way.

I cannot tell you how much I despised HBL vs WAPDA type matches.

These matches are actually getting news coverage too now. My dads been watchin Pakistani news for years now, and starting this year, I'm actually starting to hear them report on domestic matches every day. This was practically never the case before, maybe they'd only report on tournament finals.

They will definitely top the table but unfortunately semifinals and finals require on the day performances - one loss and they’re out. I think the format should be different, let the table topper proceed directly to the final and let 2 battle it out with 3 for the other finalist position.
