Lets be honest - I see some fans wearing cricket jersey's time to time but I can tell most of them are fake from a 100 miles away lol :shezzy

Rarely do I see authentic cricket jersey's with the actual name of players like we do in Soccer and North American Sports...

I have a hard time searching for the authentic Pakistan cricket jersey online too. I can only see it on the ICC website and even that does not have a customization option where I could add my favorite players name.

On further investigation - the Nike AND Adidas home page website does not even have a Cricket subsection lol

In fact, I do not even know which shoes Babar Azam or Shehzad wear so how does PCB expect me to buy their merchandise?

The only cricket equipment that is promoted is the bat - Kohli's MRF, Dhoni's Reebok etc.

Why is cricket apparel promoted so poorly and why it is so hard to find? :danish

In India Nike showroom do sell Indian jersey and also shoes cricketers use/promote.

I think, and I might be wrong, the fact that the authentic merchandise in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh are costly when you consider the fact that the dominating class is middle class and they find it way more costly than they will pay for happily.

Cricket is mainly played in sub-continent and you can't compare cricket being played in sub-continenet with the 1st world countries

Yes it is costly but buying one once in a few years is not the end of the world.

I would rather pay money to buy a good jersey that will last a few years than buy junk. I am sure most middle class folks could get one if they really wanted to.

Luxury items are not popular buys in 3rd world countries, even if they are affordable. They would rather spend money on something practical which can be used more often and better value for price

Lower middle class.

The fact that fans get jerseys outside the ground at a cheap price can be the reason. They see no reason to have a costly one that will go on for years.Rather have a cheap one and a new one every match they go to see.

Well you have to take into account where cricket is popular vs where the others you mentioned are popular. Cricket is mostly popular in Asia and to some extent, aus and eng, but mostly in PAK/IND/BD/SL. In all these places, counterfeit merchandise is sold at a fraction of cost of the original and the laws for these sort of stuffs are iffy in Asia compared to let's say NFL. In NA, they will sue you A$$ if you are found to sell counterfeit products.

Cricket bats - esp hard ball ones - are just as expensive as an authentic cricket jersey yet they sell like hotcakes in the subcontinent :13:

Even those are 1st copies. :)))

You will get a lot of variety in bats here. You can get a bat ranging from 1,500-25,000.So I don't know which bats are you talking about?

Normal hard ball bats - I have bought a few from Azizabad (Karachi) and I remember them being quite pricey. Not sure how "real" they were but they were solid i.e. could play the hard ball without any issues.

Poor marketing.

People dont realize the worth or the amount they could make.

It has nothing to do with first world or third world.

If cricket strated making snapback caps, amd marketted thrm properly, trust me people would buy

problem is pakistani companies dont know how to market their product

I agree - rarely do I see training shirt replicas, hoodies, caps, water bottles etc. for sale in sports shops.

Most Nike showrooms in India have the Team India jersey. But people would rather buy a fake jersey because piracy is huge in this part of the world. People would rather buy a cheap copy than pay full price for the original.

I am working on something that will popularize the sales of merchandize during live matches. My company is in talks with some cricket boards.

It's the responsibility of the board to ensure official merchandise is available for sale. The countries that do it best are England followed by Australia. India has gotten better but the general population doesn't care if they're wearing a fake jersey or cap.

does anyone even know were to get an official Pakistan top from. Everywhere seems to sell cheap knock offs that you would find in the street markets of pakistan, availability must be a factor.

I think in Sub Continent mass population do not have that kind of money to spend on Jerseys. Nike sells official Indian jerseys for around Rs 5K(approx $100). Also, regulations arent placed or enforced to crack down on fake jerseys.
But you're also right to an extent that general population couldn't be bothered if the jersey they are wearing the merchandise is original or not.

If you can answer why most people have Iphone and Samsung smart phones latest editions in Europe and United States and very few people have Iphone and Samsung in subcontinent.

It's too expensive

Well they don't buy cricket bats to stuck them up at home. They buy them to play cricket.

You can play cricket in any shirt/jersey, so you are pretty much forced to buy a bat.

You're right the purchasing power is lower in the Sub Continent but that doesn't mean everyone wears fake. India has a growing middle-class so you will only see it increase from here on, specially when people are able to identify between the original and fake. I know from my personal experience that sourcing an official Pakistan jersey is hard but doable if you're ready to drop some cash. I think a good start to make official merchandise more popular is to have a store at each of the stadiums...where fans can buy original stuff when they come in for a game.

Here in Toronto, during bluejays game( baseball) there are stalls outside each entrance selling merchandise at discount rate. So, fans getting in stadium would buy to keep up with latest trend.
Some of the merchandise are beer bottle opener, summer hats, winter gloves, tshirts, scarf, etc.
You see there can be many various merchandise that BCCI/PCB can make money off. You dont necessarily have to sell jerseys to make money.

Your point regarding every stadium to have a merchandise shop is very valid. Again, here bluejays stadium( Rogers center) also have official bluejays shop where fans can shop Jerseys and much more.
During weekend games, Club giveway free merchandise to first 20K making their way to ballpark.

So, yes i agree with you that boards can try various ways of promoting merchandise.

I feel IPL/PSL will sooner or later will push their merchandise as league grows even bigger in future.

No one in India wants to pay Rs.5000 for a Indian Virat Kohli jersey and only to have the jersey become outdated in few months. They can get a counterfeit one for Rs. 250.

I'd pay a lot for a quality Pakistan Jersey with an actual name and number on the back!
