President Donald Trump said he doesn’t see a reason for Congress to impeach him but that the stock market would plummet and Americans would be poorer if lawmakers did so.

"I don’t know how you can impeach somebody who’s done a great job," Trump said in a wide-ranging interview with Fox News broadcast Thursday.

"I’ll tell you what, if I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash,” Trump added. “I think everybody would be very poor. Because without this thinking you would see numbers that you wouldn’t believe, in reverse."

Trump’s remarks built on his history of defying presidential traditions by commenting extensively on the stock market. U.S. equities are in the middle of the longest bull market ever, buoyed in part by his tax cut but predating him by years and undergirded by corporate earnings and low interest rates.

The U.S. Constitution says the president, vice president and "all civil officers" -- which has been construed to include judges and members of a president’s cabinet -- "shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."

Trump’s Republican Party holds a majority of seats in the House of Representatives, where articles of impeachment originate and which decides whether any perceived offenses rise to that level. Democratic leaders have mostly declined to discuss impeachment as they try to recapture a majority in the November midterm elections.

Two U.S. presidents -- Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 --- have been impeached, though in neither case did the required two-thirds of the Senate vote to convict, which would have resulted in removal from office. The House has initiated proceedings more than 60 times and voted to impeach 15 federal judges and one senator in addition to the chief executives.

Trump faced perhaps the worst day of his presidency Tuesday when his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, implicated him in a crime at almost the same time his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was convicted on eight counts of tax-and bank-fraud charges, boosting Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

During the Fox interview, Trump also lamented Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s inability to gain “control” over the Justice Department, the practice of prosecutors "flipping" criminal defendants and illegal immigration. Trump also boasted about the state of the economy since his election.

He's back against the wall now. Haters from everywhere have formed a mob and are coming at him with pitchforks and torches.

He's almost like a...

cornered tiger.

Given the two-thirds Senate majority required for successful impeachment, it is extremely difficult to ever imagine it happening.

Andrew Johnson opposed citizenship for African-Americans post-Lincoln, an unthinkable position for any politician to take let alone a US President, but even he did not get impeached (survived by one vote).

Clinton easily survived his impeachment experience despite “definitely not having sexual relations with that woman”, and today his presidency ranks highly with both scholars and the public.

The only sitting President who would probably have been successfully impeached was Nixon, but he jumped before the history books could record an outcome.

I highly doubt that Trump can be deposed on the Hill, especially given the fact that the GOP controls both Houses, and if we’re being honest what he has allegedly done (before he was President) was morally wrong, however is unlikely to qualify as a “high crime or [high] misdemeanour” under serious scrutiny and with the top lawyers on the case in Trump’s favour.

Much more likely is him losing the 2020 Election, although the Democratic Party is not exactly setting the world alight and has not reformed or changed anything since Trump embarrassed Hillary, so he may yet sneak back into the Oval Office for another four years.

Well, he is correct. It's not like the stock markets will continue like it's business as usual if the US President is removed.

Anyway, there is no danger to Trump. He'll last through to 2020 and serve another 4 years after that.

Never..as Varun said...will last through 8 years...He is very lucky.I believe after that Ivanka will be president for 8 years...

I don't think he will get impeached (or at least in this term). Now, everything changes when Special Counsel Muller's investigation is concluded. Depending on the findings, that can destroy his Presidency.

Don't think he will win in 2020, but in saying that if he's declared not guilty from the Mullers investigation, I can see him easily winning in 2020.

Even if he's not impeached, he's almost guaranteed to face criminal proceedings once he leaves office. Although he's then very likely to be pardoned by any new President, my understanding is that in order to be pardoned, someone has to be convicted first.

Besides, some of the charges he will almost certainly face will not be Federal charges in Federal Courts, but charges in State Courts. The President can only pardon those convicted in Federal Courts and cannot do the same for those convicted in State Courts.

One way or the other, if he's still around when his term as President ends, Trumpety will almost certainly face jail time when he's President no more.

It would be an absolute disaster if Trump wasn't allowed to complete his term. One way or another we need to see where his confrontational and insular policies will take the country. The last thing we need is for his supporters to be left crying foul, and 'if only...!'

Either his way must be proven to be the way forward, or we need to learn from it and say never again.

No as impeachment is a political process which would require some Republican Congressmen actually showing a backbone and taking a stance against this criminal administration.

As for the predictions here that Trump will win a second term - he has historically low approval ratings for any President at this juncture in office so what are these predictions based on ? He was fortunate the Democrats in 2016 produced a candidate perceived as even more corrupt than him.

Impeachment does not mean automatic dismissal, for example Bill Clinton was impeached but finished his term.

It's become cynical. No matter what he does or says has any impact on republicans or his base.

Things heating up now. Getting extremely mistreating. I think he gets a lot of undue hate from the hardcore left wing. Granted he does stupid things and says stupid things. But he has done some good and brought some interesting solutions and changes to the fore front.

We have congressional elections this year.

Regardless of whether people like the trump or not - he is doing wonders for the American economy so it would be silly to impeach him - i expect him to be voted in for a second term.

Don’t you mean he’s doing a great job spinning it so that his voter base thinks he’s the one whose made the economy strong?

Trump will not only take the states down economically, but the rest of the world with him too.

Trump has incredible support among Whites here. He may win the elections next time too.

Trump is not going to be impeached. Even if they lose the house, democrats don’t have the numbers to remove him from the senate. He is going to complete 2 terms, get ready for it.
