Will Hasan Ali's lack of height prevent him from reaching great heights?

Sorry for the pun in the title but this is a serious thread and lets analyze Hassan in detail.

When Mohd Sami started and everyone was going gaga over him I was skeptical because he was short and skiddy customer and had a feeling that such fast bowlers even though do well in ODI's since batsmen attack them more but in tests batsman can sit back and wait for the eventual half volley and thus their threat reduces unless they are getting a lot of help from the conditions.

However I have hope for Hassan more then I had for Sami and thats not just because of his better bowling brain and control then Sami. One surprising thing that I have seen from Hassan is when he is bowling back of a length he more then not surprises the batsman with the extra lift he gets more often then not he is hitting the splice of the bat and also his bouncer is quite awkward and tough to play so I believe as long he can keep on getting this extra lift his lack of height will not stop him from achieving success in test cricket.

However in order to be a great test match bowler the most important skill a pacer needs to have is how well he can use the new ball until now due to no fault of his Hassan new ball skills have rarely been showcased he seems to have all the bases covered Good pace, movement of the seam late reverse, good bouncer, yorker, slower ball and most importantly good control if his new ball skills are as good as his other skills I see no reason that he will not take 300 test match wickets @ <28.

Thoughts?

one thing I want Hassn to do is work hard on his fitness and become a consistent 140 kmph average speed bowler his main mode of dismissal especially in test cricket will be bowled and Lb's and the better his pace is more chance he will get those mode of dismissals.

Hassan Ali has already surpassed my expectations. Congratulations to him!

The issue, as you have pointed out, is height.

He is shorter than ANY successful fast or fast-medium bowler in international cricket since World War 2.

The most successful short bowlers - Malcolm Marshall (4 inches taller) and Ryan Harris (3 inches taller) - were supremely skilful, and fortunately for Hassan Ali he has very good skills too.

The problem that Hassan Ali is going to face is that when the ball loses its shine in international cricket, or if it does not swing or seam, then the best bowlers usually rely on their extra height - ideally at least 8 inches taller than him - to get sharp lift from a good length, so that the batsman can neither cut nor drive.

That keeps the scoring rate down.

Hassan Ali's shortness means that in ODI cricket he will every few games return figures of 10-0-75-0 even when he is in good form.

And in Test cricket on a docile wicket with a Kookaburra ball, a tall bowler like Josh Hazlewood might finish the first 80 overs to the second new ball with 16-8-40-1 as part of an attack conceding 250-5 in the first 80 overs and then with the second new ball get 5-2-6-2 to leave the opposition closing at 280-9 and Hazlewood with 21-10-46-3.

But an attack like Pakistan's with short, skiddy bowlers like Hassan Ali, Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan is more likely to see each of them finish the first 80 overs with 15-2-65-0 and the opposition ending the day at 380-3 instead of 280-9.

That is what killed Pakistan at both Sydney and Melbourne: Pakistan didn't have tall, accurate fast bowlers to tie down the Aussie batsmen, and they raced to a huge score.

Malcolm Marshall

Lets not get ahead of ourselves by naming the best bowler in the history of cricket.

On topic, i think Hasan's passion will ensure he does well in most places.

Malcolm Marshall was 6 ft+?

Marshall was 5-11 I think same as Dale Styen Hassan is 2 inches shorter then them. Rhyno harris was 5-10 I tink he is the shortest ever successful test bowler.

This height is all bs hes a great bowler tbh no one knows the real height of any of the cricketers except maybe irfan cause he's different which sucks cause height is mentioned a lot on this forum but no one even knows the real exact height of a single player all the ones on Google are extremely fake.

True 5"10 for a heavy weight boxer no one rated him he won't survive but oh boy did he prove them all wrong.

Finally, no bigger example to highlight the insignificance of height than Tyrion Lannister and/or Sachin Tendulkar (think they are both the same height)

Are Mike Tyson and Sachin Tendulkar bowlers?

are you saying hasan ali is 5 7? because malcom marshall is 5 11 and that is not as short as you make it out to be.

a lot of bowlers are 6 or 6 1 and that is considered a pretty good height to be a bowler.

Has average height in Punjab gone down?

Other provinces have naturally shorter population. Why is Punjab not producing tall past bowler in abundance these days?

Mohd irfan took it all I think and ruined it for the rest of the punjabis
