What's new

Will Steve Smith/Virat Kohli surpass Sachin Tendulkar in stature as batters by the time they retire?

I wacthed a short videoclip on YT yesterday, a young guy in Sydney Centrum, he was holding a big picture of Kohli in national kit on his tablet asking random people if they knew him. To my surprise only one person recognised him. That was very strange. It was a short clip (and he could have edited it as well, don't know)
There was a clip I saw of Mitchell Marsh who mentioned when they won the world cup and made Modi cry there was no reaction when he returned to Australia. He quietly went to two pubs and had some drinks before walking home after his wife finished work.

It is a completely different culture to subcontinent where cricketers are mobbed and idolized.

It's no surprise that many subcontinent cricketers flee to England and try to live there instead of dealing with Asian public - for example Zulqarnain Haider and more recently Kohli.

ODIs were definitely more prominent than today for sure, 80s ODI is pretty underrated, all elite teams played it, 3-4 way serieses were extremely common and people used to send their elite pacers and players to play One day.

47, likely to fall to 45-46 if he plays the England series fully, far off from the other two, he is better than Williamson though.

He is in a different league in term of limited overs Cricket, but the main format he is comfortably #3.

Laxman is better than Head.
I completely agree with what you posted.

He is number 3 in test and there is no chance of him getting better too.

Lara is no equal of Sachin though

Lara is a legendary batter. One of the best ever. Rated by many above Tendulkar and Bharatiyas generally don’t argue them because Lara is a spectacular batter. To each their own. I generally rate them at par in terms of quality because that’s quite correct while Sachin obviously gets greater recognition for the longevity with excellent stats.

I think Lara after 1995 couldn't play extreme pace properly anymore, he seemed scared of Shoaib and so forth, Sachin was opposite, he was actually fearless against fast bowling as humble as he was, I think for the ability against extreme pace I'd give it to Sachin, both top ten though.

They both scored everywhere against everyone with more or less same class and impact. Tendulkar with a bit more pressure on him but very equal batters

naa people dont know about cricket stars, and alot of indian fans cant digest this fact.

They believe in this delusion that Tendulkar is equivalent to Michael Jordan, when in reality he is just equivalent to the top lacrosse player.
And how many recognize Jordan picture? I can't tbh.. I don't even know which sports he's played without googling it..

Well i cant understand that, his shows are expensive for Indians.

Steve Smith and Sachin Tendulkar have almost identical numbers in Tests after 205 innings

Tendulkar was better balanced than Lara and also was more assured of his off stump.
Thus Tendulkar defence was more solid.

Steve Smith is in a different league to Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar was extremely overrated batsman, basically an upgraded consistent version of KL Rahul but nowhere close to Smith.

Actually all Indian batters are overrated. Not only Smith but even Travis Head is better than anyone India has ever produced. :inti

Wow amazing words for Smudge and Head

If anything it shows how number can be misleading.
Smith is a league above Tendulkar.
Tendulkar mastered batting against weak attacks and on batting paradises.
LMAO, numbers are always 'misleading' when it goes in favor of Indian cricketers, whether it's Tendulkar or Bumrah :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

lol, 90s had weak attacks and current attacks are best? You learn something new everyday!

Funniest bit is none of them even saw cricket in the 90's, and yet they act like they know everything about the 90's.

Steve Smith has surpassed Sachin in Test Cricket.

He is hands down the Best Test Cricketer I’ve ever seen and has absolutely NOTHING LEFT to Prove. Only Bumrah has potential to match Smith impact in Test Cricket but we’ll have to wait few more years to see how it goes.

Even in his worst phase, Smith won so many matches for Australia notably WTC final, recent BGT series with 2 impactful centuries.
Kohli on the other-hand is not even fit to tie Smith shoe lace. Even in his peak form where he was batting like Bradman against toothless Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka attack, he was caught with pants down when he met his match in Smith in 2017.

No chance… Sachin had a lot of runs under his belt and was in his prime during the latter part of his career whereas VK and Smith are losing their strength as they age so there’s no chance they can get anywhere near Sachin.

Kindly remove Virat Kohli's name from the thread title. He is nowhere near Sachin and Smith. :inti
I second this for Tests.
But Smith is nowhere near Sachin and Kohli in ODIs in terms of stature either.
I second this for ODI's. Smith should not be in the conversation.

Tendulkar was wonderful in both formats. Played at a very high level in both. Which sets him apart from the other two.

The problem with Smith becoming an all time great is that he is a proven and convicted cheat. Brought disgrace to his team and country. So there will always be that asterisk next to his name.

Also, I would say Root has now overtaken him as a batsman.

Don't get me wrong. Smith is a great bat. No question about it. But if experts were to get together to pick an all time world eleven, Tendulkar will be in both Tests and ODI teams. Smith will not.

He is only proven and convicted because CA dealt with the matter with integrity and made examples of their players.

Sachin remains "unconvicted" because his board threw a tantrum. He has also committed perjury and covered up racist abuse. Undoubtedly he is one of the most despicable characters to have played the game.

He may be a better leg spinner than Smith though.

Steve smith is already > Sachin in test cricket. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron or an Indian.

Kohli is > Sachin in odi stats wise and has more match wins + memorable moments but they'll always be a debate since kohli batted in a 2 new ball easy era.

As an all format batter(Odi + test) Sachin is superior then both.

^^ This is the gods honest truth.

Also lol at fixing, Sachin fixed before these 2 were even born.

Smith is already a giant in Test cricket. The way he made a comeback was absolute cinema. Kohli?? he is not even in the discussion anymore in red ball format. Smith is leading the charge atm in red-ball.

Sachin however is a much better prospect as an all-format (odi + test) batter. That is where Sachin goes past others.

Will have to disagree. I think Smith is behind Root. Root is at the top currently.

Neither of these 2 will surpass Sachin since Sachin dominated 2 formats while the other 2 were mediocre in one.

Kohli will probably get more popularity due to social media girls following him and flaunting over him.

He's defo surpassed Sachin in Shoe brand ads

I'm always astonished by how he reinvented himself. Due to age and declining reactions the fact that he turned that into becoming g a master of the backfoot and playing late shots so well is insane.

Very compact and complete batsmen. Kohli would have been dismissed both times on those deliberies cause their bowled on the 3rd offstump line 🤣🤣

Apart from @Rajdeep and @Devadwal nobody here ranks Kohli anywhere near Smith. Kohli is a great bat but clearly 1 level below Smith @Bewal Express @mominsaigol
In test cricket? 100%, Steve smith in test is literally the greatest of all time.

Bradman would be proud. Sachin and Smith are debatable but I rank smith higher due to higher conversion rates + higher avg in a more bowling friendly era + superior dominance across countries.

He is like what Maradona was for Argentina. Pure genius. One of the most fondest memories of my life was watching him bat live ... pure magic.

@Hitman
Sachin is the ronaldo of cricket. Or the sting of Cricket. A pure icon.

One thing I do wish however is that odi cricket never transitioned into a 2 new ball era. Has turned avg and strike rates into a total joke.

Now we have people comparing babar azam to Sachin cause babar has a higher avg smh.

45 and 86 sr was such a top standard in that era. Now it's a joke.

Agreed. Goat smith

Yes to me better than tends

Smith has 36 test centuries and 41 50's. That's a crazy conversion rate. Anytime smith hits a 50, it's almost guaranteed that he'll reach a 100.

And some of his 50's aren't even dismissals. A majority of them are due to Australia declaring in the 2nd innings or so.

It's absolutely insane how someone in this era can virtually guarantee a 100 every time he gets a 50 lol

In modern era

1) Smith
2) Tenda
3) Lara

^^ These are top 3 of all time. Not putting in viv as I don't consider that modern era tbf, for me 1990 and >.

Before you say 1990 isn't modern era, imo for tests, the era's shpuld be extended for obvious reasons.

However I think this era is the last era of good test batters. Besides Jaiswal, the upcoming crop is pathetic for all countries.

If Brooks, Rachin, Sam konstas, Gill etc etc are the future of test cricket then Kill me now.

@Devadwal Thank you bro, I now have 12000 reactions thanks to you.

Help me get to 13K, ya boiiiiii

The fact that two different batsman who excel in two different formats are being compared with one batsman should tell all about the batsman.

What if Smith loses form and averages 10 for the rest of his career? Sachin at his peak had similar stats to Smith.

Which is why I am not a fan of comparing players in peak with someone's numbers after retirement

Impactful knocks wise smith was better

But…… he played for a stronger team compared to tenda

To me though he is still the best because without smith Aus would never have won games in the Bg series as they are very beatable without him for top 2 teams. And also his knocks in England where everyone were getting out swing was just unbelievable

Sachin never had such stand out match winning knocks.

Prime smith is better than kohli in odi too. Peak level

Consistency wise yea kohli is better

But I would take smith over kohli in both formats

No test cricket always come sfirst

So smith is the best

Sachin next. Close second for all time

Then Virat is no where near lmao

He is pujara level

Alma is better than kohli

I can name so many actually.

Sachin at his peak wasn't anywhere close to smith at his peak, infact sachin at his peak was close to how smith is now.

As for losing form and avg 10 for the rest of his career, good luck with that. That wishful thinking 🤣.

Smith played for a stronger team? Are you kidding?

The entire Indian team was filled with 50+ avg batters except for laxman who was dubbed as crises man.

The only reason that team India wasn't that great was due to toothless bowling and classic aus wiping the floor with everybody.

Infact their the only team that managed to win one series against classic test aus.

Smith team is no where close, however if Smith had batted in that era then he'd have replaced Damien martyn and aus team would have been even more unstoppable

@kron

1) Chopra
2) Sehwag
3) Dravid
4) Sachin
5) Ganguly
6) Laxman
7) parthiv Patel

^^ How is this team worse then what Smith plays for? No batter from top 6 avg less then 45?

Hazlewood
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Warner
Carey

If you think this team is average then you are delusional. Aus team is strong as hell. As good as Sachin India post 2004 to 2010

Sachin played with weak as teams in 90s
Have a look at the bowling and even the batting in 90s

Aus team post 2018 to 2023 is strong as hell.

This is them just last month

And all this talk of batting being tougher today is completely exxagerated. The low numbers are because batsmen techniques have been ruined by T20 so they cannot leave 2 balls outside off or play defensive shots but hit put like Kohli and get out. Batsmen with good technique like root and smith are succeeding easily in tests.

Also during most of 90s batting eas equally tougher and Sachin was one of those who excelled, in the 2000s flat pitch era Sachin had two major injuries and he couldn't capitalise or else he could have easily averaged over 60.

And the bowling? Like I said in 90s he had a bad team

Between 2004 to 2011 he has a great team and that’s on par with what smith had from 2018 to 2023

Loool at the bowling attack

You think sreesanth Munaf patel zaheer khan and praveen Kumar are at Aus bowling level? And the wicket keeper rofl
Midget Pathiv vs carey

And then Lyon is way better than Bhakti the chucker

Also Aus have green who is a beast. All rounders like him and marsh.

No its drs
Drs made it a lot difficult for batsmen to do well

Well you better hope, Smith doesn't decrease, otherwise I'm coming to getcha
