Modi made terrible mistake by revoking Kashmir’s special status on August 5, PM tells AJK Assembly

(Karachi) Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that Indian PM Narendra Modi made a terrible mistake by revoking the special status of Kashmir on August 5, 2019.

Addressing the Azad and Jammu Kashmir Assembly on Kashmir Siege Day on Wednesday, he said Modi won the last elections by using Hindu card and provoking hatred for Muslims and Pakistan.

Imran maintained that the struggle of the people of Kashmir will eventually result in freedom. “Narendra Modi thought he would spread scare in Jammu Kashmir by deploying 0.8 million Indian Army troops but he failed in his nefarious designs,” he stated.

The prime minister said, “Some Western countries fear China and they are using India against it.”

He said, “We apprised the world leaders, including US President Donald Trump that India is spreading the perception of Nazism which could harm peace and stability in the region.” Imran Khan said that Pakistan raised the Kashmir issue on every platform, highlighting human rights abuses by Indian troops.

He said that India can never succeed in its evilish plans against the people of Kashmir.

The premier mentioned that India has been exposed in front of the entire world. He said that over the past year, the media has recognised India’s treatment of Kashmir. “Initially media would be pro India and against Pakistan, but if you look at this past year, you will notice that all international articles have recognised India’s treatment of Kashmir,” he added.

He pointed out that India has committed a crime against humanity by destroying lives, crippling livelihoods and imperilled the very identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Pakistan will always be with its brothers and sisters in IoK. We will never accept, and neither will the Kashmiris, the illegal Indian actions and oppression of the Kashmiri people,” the PM said.

On the occasion, the PM announced that the government will award Nishan-e-Pakistan to Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Gillani for his struggle against Indian oppression and raising voice for the people of held valley.

Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called an all-party meeting on Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, sources say amid reports that the Centre may discuss restoration of statehood and other important issues concerning the union territory. This is the PM's first major outreach to end the political impasse over the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019.
"We have been intimated about a meeting next week. We are waiting for a formal invitation," a senior Jammu and Kashmir leader told NDTV.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and top security and intelligence officers.

In August 2019, the centre cancelled Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and also bifurcated the state into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Top leaders in Jammu and Kashmir - including former Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah - were arrested just before the Centre announced the mega decisions in parliament. They were released months later.

NDTV had last week reported that the centre was likely to initiate the political process that has been virtually non-existent since 2019.

The centre is also expected to discuss assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, due since 2018, when then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti snapped ties with her coalition partner BJP.

The Gupkar Alliance or PAGD, the seven-party amalgam formed to campaign for the restoration of special status to Jammu and Kashmir -- has indicated its willingness to join the talks.

The centre had held local body elections in Jammu and Kashmir in December; the Gupkar Alliance won more than 100 seats and the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 74 seats.

The latest development comes months after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire along the Line of Control, the first major peace initiative since 2019.

The Indian media on Saturday reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had convened a multi-party moot of Kashmiri leaders on June 24 to discuss the possible restoration of the statehood of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) region.

On August 5, 2019, Modi’s government revoked articles in the Indian constitution that guaranteed IIOJK's partial autonomy and other rights including its own flag and constitution.

A huge accompanying security operation saw tens of thousands of extra troops — adding to 500,000 already there — enforced a siege-like curfew. Thousands were arrested and telecommunications were cut for months.

IIOJK was demoted to a union territory governed directly from New Delhi, while the Ladakh region was carved out into a separate administrative area.

Creating such new “facts on the ground” in IIOJK has long been advocated by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the hard-line Hindu parent organisation to Modi’s BJP party.

The move sent a further shudder through India’s 200-million Muslim minority and defenders of its secular traditions, who fear Modi wants to create a Hindu nation.

According to reports, informal invitations have been sent to as many as 14 political parties of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. However, they added that it was not clear about the real objective of the conference.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla reached out to these leaders to invite them to the meeting at the prime minister’s residence to discuss the future course of action, Indian Express quoted officials as saying.

The report added that among those invited are four former chief ministers of IIOJK— Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah of the National Conference, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.

Pakistan this week wrote a letter to the UN Security Council President, expressing concerns over reports that India may be contemplating further divisions, bifurcation and demographic changes in the disputed territory.

Given Islamabad’s reaction, it appeared that the Modi government may be bringing more changes to the disputed territory, something that would certainly ignite fresh tensions between Pakistan and India.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in a recent interview indicated that Pakistan could re-engage with India even if New Delhi simply gave a road map to reverse the August 5 actions. But India prior to today’s development appeared not in a mood to offer anything on Kashmir at the moment. Instead, the relationship may deteriorate further if India further brings changes to the Kashmir region.
