Yes, its the exact formula for winning the match in this World Cup.

On a flat belter, we have seen teams winning the toss and batting first, put a big total on board and teams struggle to chase that.

Australia failed to chase vs India
India failed to chase vs England
England failed to chase vs Pakistan(think England won the toss and opted to bowl, it backfired)
Pakistan failed to chase vs India

On a pitch having some assistance for bowlers, team still bats first, post a total of 250+ and win the match.

Australia defended vs England
New Zealand defended vs Windies
Sri Lanka defended a lower total vs England

Can we assume that in semi-finals and finals, teams that will win the toss will also opt to bat and will most likely win as I don't see much of difference between the gulf of the top cricket teams- India, Australia, England, New Zealand and Pakistan.

Whoever wins the toss, opts to bat and wins the game! Discuss!

Yes, even more so with the pitches slowing down now more at the latter stage of the tournament.

Pakistan have still managed to win twice chasing though. :yk

If you bat first and score over 250, can we assume you will win the match?

Not really true. The wicket PAK beat NZ on was turning miles amd yet PAK won. Same yesterday 230 odd was not a huge score but conditions were ideal for spin bowling 2nd.

Today was a whole different ball game. Ultra flat wicket and on one side 59 meter boundary LOL. 330 odd was no big score with wickets in hand getting 110 of last 10 overs is always very much on.

Pakistan have chased successfully twice in this tournament, vs NZ and vs RSA.

India have chased once, vs RSA.

New Zealand have chased once, vs RSA.

Australia haven't chased anything except 210 vs Afg.

England haven't chased anything yet.

Strategies after losing Toss

The last 4 games had the same pattern. Teams that won the toss chose to bat first, Openers scored at 6+ RR for the first 20 overs and then the scoring tapered off after 25 overs. It appears the pitch slows down after that initial phase and the initial 20 overs is when Eng (twice) and Ind took the game away from the opposition.

How do teams counter this if they lose the toss? Should they be defensive and try to contain? The wickets aren't coming anyway. Should one even bowl spinners in this phase? Discuss

This is the problem with flat pitches. Teams may be able to chase in bilateral series, but chasing in a World Cup with all the pressure is way too hard. It basically becomes win the toss, win the game.

Not sure about bowling plans, but while chasing some urgency in the first 10 overs will do wonder for the team losing toss.

Newer/unexpected opening combos with pinch hitter could be tried.

Would prefer more fluid/flexible batting order with left/right combo.
