Australia batter Steve Smith said playing Test cricket in India is very difficult and he would love to win a Test series against the No.1-ranked side.

Australia last won a Test series in India in 2004, when Ricky Ponting became the only captain from his country to win a Border-Gavaskar trophy on Indian soil.

"I would love to win a Test series in India," Smith told New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi during a podcast organised by their IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals. "I think as an Australian cricketer we talk about Ashes, which is always big, the World Cup is big, but I think now India is the No.1 team in the world and it is a very difficult place to play Test cricket, so I would love to win a series there," he added.

"Other than that I would not like to set too many goals, but take things day-by-day, series-by-series, just try to improve."

The 30-year-old also praised India spinner Ravindra Jadeja, whom he finds "very difficult to play" in the subcontinent.

"Jadeja in the sub-continent ... why is he so good because, he hits that good length and one ball skids on and one spins, and it just looks all the same out of the hand. I think consistency in length is key and then having at least one variation," said Smith.

"So, I think for a leg-spinner, having a good googly, or a slider is crucial and for fingers spinners, being able to change the pace without changing the arm speed too much [is important]. I reckon there a few around the world who do that, Jadeja is one of them. He is very difficult to play."

Smith returned to international cricket last year after serving a year-long ban imposed on him for his role in the ball-tampering incident in the 2018 Cape Town Test. He played in two big assignments after that – the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the Ashes series.

"It has been a pretty long year with the World Cup and Ashes, a few away one-day tours," said Smith. "So this rest is not the worst thing but hopefully it is for a few weeks. I am pretty keen to get back to playing."

How about Pakistan?

Lost 2-0 in 2014 and 1-0 in 2018.
Margins:
321 runs.
356 runs.
373 runs.
They were that bad :))

But of course no one in Australia seem to care much about Australian cricket unless they are playing at home or if it is an Ashes tour or tour of, Ind, SA, NZ or maybe the odd world tournament in the shorter forms.

true. Because pakistan haven't won a single TEST MATCH in australia since 99. Maybe that's why beating pakistan isn't special to them

However you are right. australia sucks vs pakistan away as well. They got mauled in the post 2010 era by pakistan.

Shows what the Aussies now think of the Ashes. It seems that England still drool over the Ashes but the Aussies aren't too fussed about it.

Again you miss the simple reason although Australia have had a poor record against Pakistan away from home other teams have been able to beat Pakistan so it wouldn't be as bigger achievement.

So, Smith considers Jadeja as the toughest bowler to play in the subcontinent.

Australia have won series in England plenty of times. It's understandable why winning in India away is the pinnacle.

India is the toughest place to play in test match cricket, so it makes sense.

But, even Smith, who performed outrageously last time, couldn't stop India.

Winning a Test series in India is something to relish for ages.

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

The Ashes is even still broadcast AWAY on terrestrial TV here in Australia. We saw very clearly last northern summer that in Australia The Ashes remains at least ten times as big as the World Cup.

and the same will happen in 2021 when australia tour india except this time bumrah will own smith for the entire series.

india tour at the end of the year anyway down under. We shall see how that goes. CV could affect the intensity level and preparation unfortunately.

While Ashwin and Jadeja are there, Smith won't win a series in India

Nah man. You are hyping bumrah to the moon. He got owned by williamson on helpful pitches. He is not going to do much on flat pitches of india and australia. I bet he will be injured by the end of the series

Who's talking about the World Cup.

Smith clearly states India series means more to him.

I don't think the Ashes means less to the Aussies but they see winning in India as the ultimate challenge for them. Langer has consistently stated that.

bumrah for owned? bumrah wrecked Kane twice in that series. In tests. Don't confuse odi for tests.

Kane did well only in the first test.

bumrah can reverse swing lol. So can shami and ishant as well. australia will never win the series in india...

I am.not sure if they can even beat india at home without winning the toss. Actually I don't think they will. If india prepare well like australia did for the 2016/17 series in india, I am certain they would comfortably win away down under.

India just have too busy a schedule. So it will be hard to prep for important clashes.
