Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh have unleashed a social media storm by backing former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi's foundation in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The two countries are bitter rivals and the move touched a raw nerve in India.

Afridi's appeal for donations to help people affected by the deadly virus in Pakistan has had overwhelming support from leading cricketers.

Harbhajan urged people to contribute in a video message, and called on other cricketers in the two countries to make similar appeals.

"These are testing times, it's time to look out for each other," Yuvraj wrote on Twitter in a call for funds.

While Afridi thanked the two, Indian Twitter users reacted with fury at the support for a rival player who has been a vocal critic of India's handling of the Kashmir dispute.

"Do you have any sense?" wrote one Twitter user. "Lost respect" for Harbhajan Singh, added another. "Sorry guys you lost it."

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral cricket series since 2012-2013 and have seen a new peak in tensions over Kashmir, which has been at the centre of two wars between the neighbours since 1947.

Kashmir has been divided between the two since their independence seven decades ago and India frequently accuses Pakistan of organising "terrorism" on its side of the border.

World Cup-winning batsman Yuvraj, who made a return from cancer before finally retiring last year, has also raised money to fight coronavirus through his 'YouWeCan' foundation.

India, which has been under a 21-day lockdown since March 24, has so far confirmed more than 1,600 coronavirus cases and 38 deaths.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was strongly criticised on Twitter

Why do these celebs take the Twitter warriors seriously?

Afridi hate Indian, many times he tweeted against India on Kashmir issue.
That reflecting in twitter.

Afridi past views against India and all above incidents added fire to yuvi tweets

Just coz he hates the Indian occupation of Kashmir, it doesn't mean he hates India.

Don't you hate the way North Korean government treats its people?
Do you hate the NK civilians though?

Anyways, even if did hate Indians i wouldn't fault him lol

Yeah do not see the relevance, he sounds like one of the Indian twitter warriors. Have some class mate in a time like this.

I think i've done with Indians is that if you tell them their government is treating muslims or the othee minorities badly, they but but Pakistan does this. Pakistan does that.

The whataboutery is strong with them

Don't try to reason with a sanghi whose only aim in life is to hate anything Pakistani.

Well, if you have no answer about Afridi hate statements against Hindu's and India you can call whatever you want.

I am saying all above Afridi incidents irked Indians and that reflects on yuvi tweet.

Lately their hate for muslims is quite evident in their posts.

In India, you get into trouble if you ever speak for muslims. The vast majority of right wing fascist hindus that surround you everywhere will conspire to get you into trouble as soon as they see you opposing their hateful bigoted views.

Yuvraj is a great guy. Good on him.

Harbhajan though is quite a stupid and bigoted guy. He often takes sly digs at Pakistan (is).

A lot of Indians have deep hatred for Pakistan and Muslims. It is quite evident. I see many examples when I go to social media.

I respect afridi for the charitable work he does with his foundation. May god give him wealth & strength to do more of such work.

But I DON'T respect him for the way he mocked my religion and my tradition of performing aarti.

I can understand that you don't like ur daughter following other religious traditions fair enough till here.
But the way he mocked my tradition , I have lost respect for him.

I have NO respect for ppl who don't respect or make fun of our religious traditions.

Think the anger is due to the fact that he did not made any contribution or appeal towards PM relief fund and decided to support a foreign cause. Not saying anger towards him is justified but people expect more from their heros who earns millions in times like these.

If old woman like Modi's mother can make conbtribution from savings....people expect more from stars like Yuvraj/Bhajji etc.

Modi's mother donates Rs 25,000 from personal savings to PM's Covid-19 relief fund

https://m.timesofindia.com/india/mo...d-19-relief-fund/amp_articleshow/74915313.cms

Also, Yuvraj lately is bit on a whinning spree. He even said he loved playing under Ganguly but didnt got much help from Dhoni/Kohli. Lol. He was finished as a cricketer by 2012...yet Kohli played him in 2017 CT.

And muslims dont have hatred for hindus? Lol. Let me know if you need some evidences from same social media. Forget about India or Pakistan, I can give you evidence from your country Bangladesh.

Are you for real?

What has Afridi's apparent hate for India got anything to do with Bhajji & Yuvraj making donations towards his charity? Or may be you think, Afridi is using those charity funds for his own use.

Needy people are needy people, either on that side of the border or on our side.

Just because most of those beneficiaries are Muslims, it makes Yuvraj & Bhajji's donations anti national acts now?

What will be reaction in Pakistan Twitter IF any Pakistan cricketer tweets and requests contribution for the covid 19 relief fund in India

You can find bad apples from every side.

But, when I go to social media, I see more nasty comments from Indians than I see from other groups.

That's because our country is full of jaahils and narrow minded people. We will never become a first world country because even educated people(including NRIs) act like proper jaahils here. :inti

Should not be criticized. Two wrongs do not make one right.

Yuvraj and Harbhajan were asking for people to donate to Afridi's Foundation which is currently helping in relief efforts. Besides that, they also have hospitals and schools. It is not a governmental fund or something run by IK.

If any Indian cricketer did that and a Pakistani cricketer advocated for it, I doubt there would be any issues. Specially if it was someone like Yuvraj who has always been on good terms.

How quick Indians are to point out that incident where Afridi broke his TV (not because of disrespect for Hinduism but because he was angry with his wife for allowing his children to watch the TV programs which he didn't want) and forget the number of times Afridi has said good things about playing in India, praising the crowds and the reception that the Pakistan team has received there in the past.

I have seen plenty of negative comments on shoaib akther videos for just praising Indian cricket team

Cases like these give chances to the so called liberals to make fun of indias mentality and its totally justified.
The donation will finally help poor people in pakistan so there should be no problem with yuvrajs tweet.

But shahid afridis aarti incident has really affected his image badly in India, that along with his jibe at indians open heartedness damaged his reputation.
So i am not shocked many indians are reacting like this and afridi needs to be more sensible if he wants to run his foundation successfully.

Disappointing to see such awful,hate-filled comments from some people here. What Harbajhan and Yuvraj did was for a good cause and now their loyalty to their homeland is being questioned.

I have seen plenty of negative comments on shoaib akther videos for just praising Indian cricket team

Because he goes out of his way and does it every other day. He was often making more videos about India than Pakistan.

If any Indian cricketer did the same with regards to Pakistan, they might have to leave the country altogether :))

Every country has these morons.. Because of our population and internet users these numbers look high

And Pakistan and Bangladesh will become 1st world country? Lol. Stop doing this drama. There are bigoted fools from every country and religion. But for sweep_shot to say he only sees hindus hating on muslims in social media is hilarious. There were muslims in Delhi posting in FB hoping for India to get stage 3 covid 19. I cant post screenshots here bcoz only verified sources allowed.

I am 200% sure that pakistanis will also react the same way if any of their cricketers ask them to donate for india.
Many of these ppers hate akhtar just bcoz he praises indians for some easy money.

Secondly, this has got nothing to do with muslims, if yuvi and bhajji asked indians to donate for Afghanistan then they would have faced no backlash.

Because he goes out of his way and does it every other day. He was often making more videos about India than Pakistan.

If any Indian cricketer did the same with regards to Pakistan, they might have to leave the country altogether :))
What do you think would have happened if someone like akhtar asked pakistania to donate for india?
Simple question.

Haha loving the comments of Indians on Bhajji Tweet. This nation has really gone downhill under Modi be it economically and socially. Their hatred is driving them nuts. Hopefully it's only the loose Bhakts and sane one will curb them out before it's too late. Neo-Nazism style mentality seems to growing quite fast in them.

Nothing. Majority would actually appreciate donation for a good cause. We don't have a government and media shoving hate down our throat constantly about the other side.

But still indian tweeples are wrong here.

If my daughter or son starts performing other religious traditions I would politely tell them not to do so & would educate them that we are hindus & we don't follow other religions or their traditions. I would educate them about my religion & traditions.

But I would never mock or make fun of other religious traditions that's for sure.

It was a surprised reaction. Which is why he was telling the story

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill

I have found Pakistanis to be lot more welcoming towards Indians than Indians towards Pakistanis. Pakistani media never shy away from praising India also when its needed. Indian media and celebrity on the other hand is afraid of doing it because they know they will be labeled as traitors.

Sachin Tendulkar not congratulating Pakistan after CT is prime example of that. He was following that game from start but didn't congratulate them. I won't blame him. Who wants to mess with 100's of jaahils at the same time? If anyone wants to know why he didn't congratulate Pakistan just look at this thread. :inti

I just saw the video of Afridi somehow never saw it before.
Irrespective of his terrible act and audience giving him applause for the same, this was for charity, charity should always be encouraged.

I remember Vinod Khanna donating for cancer hospital of IK as well , came to Lahore for the launch of fundraising as per IK.

Irrespective of govn and army issues there was much more interaction between the celebs and communities(my mother had to stay in Karachi for 3-4 days in late 80s) before guess social media trolls killed itz

Hmmm interesting. Just curious is it a recent trend bcoz Afridi himself found more love in India than in Pakistan back in 2016.

We get more love in India than Pakistan: Shahid Afridi

Floored by the warm reception here after arriving for the ICC World Twenty20, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi today said his team is "loved more in India" than in Pakistan and has never felt any security threat in the country.

Different point of view? By your comments it's crystal clear that you are one of those jaahils who view a human being from Hindu Muslim and Indian Pakistani spectacles.

Don't bring in your garbage that Pakistanis would have reacted the same way if the tables were turned. How and why does it matter? Just because there are bigots on their side as well, we should also leave our humanity?

This is sadly very true. Have been saying this since that bigot took over. Our people are beyond any redemption now or at least till that bigot or his ilk are in power.

So anyone who has a counter view to your view point is a jaahil? That doesn’t seem like tolerance to me. Isn’t “intolerance” your catch phrase?

No one is viewing this from a Hindu Muslim angle.

One of the oldest sayings “charity begins at home”, that’s what a lot of people are questioning.

Jahaalat is what's being seen on this thread and it's amply clear that who they are.

As for charity begins at home and all, lol poor guys didn't even donate in Afridi's charity, they only appealed others to do it, that is if you are that petty.

Also I thought tolerance also included others' right to support any charity they want. Or is charity only supposed to be done for your own compatriots?

Why do we hail Bill Gates then?

This makes me sad.

Why doesn’t the World understand even in this kind of situation...?

Sad state of affairs.

Even in this crisis people can’t put aside Pak-Ind rivalry. People from every religion are dying of this virus. So put aside this childish stuff and take this issue seriously.

I'm surprised they didn't get gambhir on board too

Sidhu has recently demonstrated some things are bigger than cricket and rivalries and its time for everyone else to wise up too

Forget about what Afridi had said/done in the past. Here, he is doing charity work for a good cause and that too an urgent one. Two of fellow cricketers are supporting it. The least you can do is to not to criticize their acts. Pseudo nationality blinds people's eyes and their spirit. It is sad we forget we all are humans. Hope the real donors don't get swayed away by the criticism of some idiots.

Bro your people criticise shoaib for making videos about india, lets not even get to this.
You are completely deluded if uou think that pakistanis would appreciate such move.
But still indian tweeples are wrong here.

Shoaib Akhtar gets called out by Pakistanis and even Indians because people think what he is saying is fake and he is only doing it for the money. Even Sehwag called him out.

Anyways read Ronaldo7 tweet, Afridi tweeted about Yuvraj Singh’s foundation a day after Indian removed article 370 so anti-India sentiment was high at that time in Pakistan but still majority of the comments were positive. On the other hand you had Indians trending #ShameonYuviBhajji as their top trend because they supported SAF during a global pandemic.

Not saying Pakistan doesn’t have bigots but the hate is way more intense on the Indian side. I wonder if it’s the Modi effect or if it was always like that.

That's because our country is full of jaahils and narrow minded people. We will never become a first world country because even educated people(including NRIs) act like proper jaahils here. :inti

both sides unfortunately have this virus. Virus of corona and virus of jahalat narrowmindedness

What about peace peopole led country replies on same yuvi for hailing the Indian Air Force after their airstrike in Pakistan in reply to the Pulwama terrorist attack.

Please stop gauging based on Twitter or any other social media, no one is perfect.

What tweet?
It says that the page doesn't exist

Post the SS

Also, what did you expect? :)))

A political post will be met with a political reply

Yuvraj's donation post was NOT political at all

You comparing that with this is like comparing apples with oranges.
