Zimbabwe (130/8) upset Pakistan (129/8) to win by 1 run in Group 2 thriller

Pakistan's record in Australia the last 25 years across formats is shocking. Yet to win a single T20I there, 5 straight whitewashes in test series, even in ODIs minnow WI (again a weak team in those conditions) bounced them out in 2015 WC.

Unable to find answers to how to cope in those conditions, also has become sort of a mental block. Even he last match against India, they would have won everywhere except Australia, sure Indian fightback was praiseworthy but don't think we would have won that in any other country. Something happens to PCT in Australia.

Well played Zimbabwe! They managed to defend 130. What a fight back!

The positive for Pakistan is, they managed to safeguard the net run rate in both of their matches so far.

There is something wrong with Pakistani Cricket Team, on paper they are very strong, the strongest T20 team for a while. Cant believe they lost to Zimbabwe!

Lol how's they are strong even on paper with non-existent middle order..?

One has to admit that Pakistan is one of the topmost chokers in world cricket because of mental issue. They may be physically strong but the opposite when it comes psychological issue.

Ramiz Raja is a gonner. If the PML-N needed an excuse to get rid of him, they are going to use this

Now only hope is India winning south africa which they might lose deliberately.

Oh forget it. Even if India beat SA, that is not going to help Pakistan. Right now India has 4 points, SA 3 and Pakistan 0.
Pakistan's only hope is to win all three matches they have remaining against BAN, NL and SA, and hope for a miracle. And possibly even BAN fancy their chances against Pakistan now.

Batsmen are struggling against short balls.

Leg side fielders were on the boundary... they just needed to tap and run when it was 3 from 3. Embarrassing effort

Babar Azam | Pakistan skipper: We would have taken 130 at the halfway stage. Very disappointing performance, we are not up to the mark in batting. We have good batters but both openers got out in the powerplay. When Shadab and Shan were building partnership, unfortunately Shadab got out and then back-to-back wickets that pushed us into pressure situation. First 6 overs, we haven't used the new ball well but we finished well with the ball. We will sit out, discuss our mistakes and we will train hard and come back strong in our next game.

This Pak bowling attacks is so exciting, pity the batsmen keep letting them down. Rubbish middle order and an opening duo who only care about personal stats.

Can't chase 130 against Zimbabwe, no excuse, simply not good enough for these conditions.

2007 vs. Ireland
2022 vs. Zim

Dark clouds loom over Pak cricket. Remove everyone except Ramiz Raja but replacements must be Domestic. Importing foreign management and coaches is not the long term solution.

Letting Zim score 130 was first sign of a loss. Here are the others...
Losing both openers cheaply.
Haider failed again.
Shadab failed to continue.
Shan out in a silly manner.
Wasim wasting too many balls at the start.
Nawaz looked too much under pressure.
Not sending Rauf up the order (he's familiar of Aus conditions).

Zimbabwe produced one of the all-time World Cup upsets with a brilliant performance in Perth to beat Pakistan by one run in a match that went down to the very last delivery.

Pakistan needed 11 to win off the final over of a pulsating evening, and that equation came down to three from three with the well-set Mohammad Nawaz at the crease.

But 25-year-old Brad Evans produced three stunning deliveries right when it mattered.

First, he fizzed through a pacy bouncer that Nawaz failed to connect with.

And a miscue off the penultimate ball had Nawaz caught at mid-off by captain Craig Ervine, a wicket that saw both batters sink to their knees, with heartbreak again for Nawaz in the second successive match.

Shaheen Shah Afridi punted the final ball down the ground, tearing back in a desperate attempt for a second run to tie the match. Wicket-keeper Regis Chakabva fumbled the throw at first, but recovered to whip off the bails with Afridi still short of his ground, sparking jubilant scenes among the Zimbabwe players and supporters.

Pakistan's flawed reply

Pakistan had made a measured start to the chase of 131 to win, but two huge Powerplay wickets gave Zimbabwe a sniff as the big-name opening pair both went cheaply.

Babar Azam was squared up by a lovely piece of bowling from Brad Evans to be sent back for just four runs off nine balls. And the outstanding Blessing Muzarabani cleaned up Mohammad Rizwan via an inside edge for 14 (16).

After Iftikhar Ahmed was also removed cheaply, Pakistan seemingly got the match under control with a solid partnership between Shan Masood and Shadab Khan to reach 88/3 with six and a half overs still remaining.

But the inspired Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza took two wickets in two balls to remove Shadab and Haider Ali, before having Masood stumped in his very next over to give Zimbabwe hope and set up a big finish.

Zimbabwe’s flying start

After opting to bat first, Zimbabwe got off to a flier as a daring Wessley Madhevere and skipper Craig Ervine played some eye-catching shots inside the first two overs. With five boundaries inside the first three overs, Zimbabwe had a fabulous start, racing away at 10 runs per over.

Some of that early momentum toned down when Ervine was sent back by Haris Rauf and his partner got trapped in front by Wasim in the following over. Shadab Khan prized out Milton Shumba before Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza went about the resurrection work.

Things turned south pretty quickly when Shadab sent back Williams and Chakabva off successive deliveries, the latter dismissed off a spectacular grab at first slip by Babar Azam.

Shadab completed a brilliant spell of 4-0-23-3 but there was more in store for Zimbabwe from the other end. In the very next over after losing two wickets off back-to-back balls to Shadab, Zimbabwe lost a further two as Mohammad Wasim dismissed Raza and Luke Jongwe off successive balls.

95/3, and what appeared to be a solid start, quickly turned into 95/7 as Pakistan's bowlers went on a rampage in Perth. Eventually, they put up 130/8 on board with some help from Brad Evans down the order.

It seemed unlikely to be enough, but a superb bowling display from Zimbabwe ensured otherwise.

India loses on Sunday, pack your bags. Plus this batting is bad, phenomenally bad. We should go home and ask Baber to play more of his friends.

Shaheen is a fast bowler and can't even run man....

That was an easy 2 there, even the keeper fumbled and you still couldn't make it?? What a hack, lol.

I agree with Mamoon, we deserve this humiliation..

The guy is a big match failure and all hyped just like Babar. Never perform in pressure game.

Well we knew that Pakistan would be out first round anyway. But losing to Zimbabwe like this. Not good enough. Almost a minnow team just that we win odd games against top 4.

1. Shades of 2003 WC, rain saved us from Zim that day.

2. Hopefully Shaheen will be rested for the rest of the tournament.

3. To the indian fans, we will remember the glee, joy, and celebrations you're exhibiting this day.

Best game of the tournament so far. Congratulations Zimbabwe.

Zimba cricket is back, on the up. This will lift them more.

Pakistan made a mess of the chase But credit should go to Zimba bowlers used the pitch well and Raza turned the match in Zim favour.

Zimbabwe beat Australia earlier this month I think in an ODI, now Pakistan in the WC. Can't be underestimated on these picthes with their surprisingly effective quicks. In the qualifiers they beat Ireland who went on to stun England yesterday.

In order of dropping or sacked.

Babar Azam
Haider Ali
Saqlain Mushtaq
Muhammed Wasim.

Nawaz couldn’t finish it with the ball in the last game and the bat this one, cannot get worse. Shocking performance from Pakistan. An upset is always on the card, but when you have to chase only 130 against Zimbabwe and fail…

Recently we beat Afghan chasing around 120ish and almost failed then. This approach is pathetic, take to the final over, regardless of the oppositions score. This is what happens when you think playing 7 t20s v England B in pakistan, somehow prepares you to bat in Australian conditions. Wasted time, should have played in conditions emulating Australia similar to their NZ series.

Sarfaraz Ahmed would be laughing back home...What a team we had...No1 during his time...see what it has become eventually...

there are so many instances today where every player should be ashamed but to have 3 off 3 to win and lose and not even get a super over is embarassing

Always feel that Babar is is overrated because he can't perform under pressure. He couldn't even take us home versus Zimbabwe for heaven sake. The middle order is worst in world cricket so much that our tail is better then the top four or five.

It is clear that these players are in the team due to their contacts not talent. Folks the team is a current reflection of the state of the country that is the ultimate fact and until the state of the country improves the Cricket will suffer. The army song says "Punjabi hum, Pathan hum, Kashmiri hum aur Balochi hum" then why are players from Baluchistan, AJK and Sindh hardly given a chance?

Indian fans are rightfully laughing at us:viru Our players should only be paid if and when they win. With one foot out of the tournament we are depending on India to defeat South Africa then we defeat them as well. At least India who have not qualified yet will try to win over the South Africans. We don't deserve to qualify for the semi's at all when our team is full of players who are related to politicians and army generals.

I think somebody should tell Shadab that he is bowler who can bat a bit. Accept your limitations and bat accordingly. Dont try to be someone you are not.

Shadab bats like a king in the PSL and bats at no 4 for Islamabad United. That tells you everything about the quality of the PSL.

Yep, he is gone over his head. He has been made to think that he is the life savior of an all rounder that Pakistan dearly needs.

Fact of the matter is, he has just one lapaaru shot where he tries to sweep on one knee towards the cow corner - and that's the end of his batting skills.

But then again, our batting line looks like a slice of swiss cheese with too many holes into it. And Shadab has been asked to fill on of the holes. We simply don't have a middle order.

Ya know ask Saqi or even Babar in detail as to why we lost and they'll say something like it was ultimately "Allah's will." No it wasn't at all Allah's will rather our team's inability to soak up the pressure against a second rate side. No other team will get religion involved as a means to vindicate themselves and escape criticism other then our losers. If it was Allah's will then there is no point in playing in the first place!

Hasnain and Dahani are from Sindh. Which Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo, Messi have we discriminated against?

They know how to play an average pakistani fan, they don't care about few who question this. In the end people should ask them to jump off the cliff, if it's Allah's will they will stay alive else not. Let's see how many of hiding behind Allah's will take the challenge.

Well we see a problematic trend with our team, if we won other games convincingly and lose one off, ok we had a bad day, but when you let opposition off the hook every game (Asia Cup Final, Afg warmup, India game and today's game) then people are right to question the team. Look how SA beat Bangla, they didn't let their tail wag. We have two tasks, improve NRR and win the game, we failed both.

I will tell my kids that this win was already scripted when in 2016 we decided to send a fake Mr.bean, or as Chisoru calls him, Pakbean.

Pakbean would get a police escort as he went on a convoy in the streets of Harare. Smiling, fist pumping and point to the crowd. Pics were taken and money was given.

6 years later, Zimbabweans figured it out that he was the Fake Mr.bean.

Zimbabwe, who has not played main group matches for a long time, decides to script a win specifically just to get in group B. As they entered group B, they first showed Pakistan how bad they were by playing badly against South Africa.

On the eve of Pakistan vs Zimbabwe, as Pakistan were chill, Zimbabwe plot their revenge. They say before launching an attack you should always give warnings, its international law.

So a night before the game, Mr. Chasaru gave warning directly to the PCB. He tagged the PCB what Pakistan did, and that the Pakbean we had sent, they would be taking its revenge. He even said, we should wish it was raining, because the whole nation is riled up.

We were taken by surprise, and than it happened. Zimbabwe, a team we haven't lost to in years in icc tournament, we lose to them by 1 run.

And that's folks how Zimbabwe took revenge of Pakbean against us

They should send Yasin Shah to Zimbabwe and Bill him as Lionel Messi.

That will serve these Zimbabwean fans right

Shadab is vice captain and is not in any way under threat by Shan

Lost the match from being 88-3 to fell short of 1 run.. Unfortunately there are not many choices for next captain in this mediocre bunch so let alone he is the vice captain...

This loss will hurt. Also, Wasim taking massive strides before that final ball is plain wrong and was clearly trying to take unfair advantage - deserved to lose.

Bottle jobs once again 2nd game running. But this is what you get when you have a gutless captain who plays and captains in such a timid manner.

Kudos to team management who feel Shadab is a more accomplished batsman than Nawaz, no planning no responsibility its all friendship Salam dua the way they are running the show

Received a severe jolt at work today when I saw the result on my phone.

Just seen the highlights. Struggling to contain my anger at this darpok, gutless team epitomised by our skipper and his opening partner. Will need time to collect thoughts and give proper analysis.

Humor is a mature coping mechanism.

But it doesn't hide a terrible result.

LOL! :D well written piece Major. Enjoyed reading it.

The issues have been there for at least a year.

Everyone has mentioned it.

The team is too reliant on its openers, they have a passive batting mindset, and the middle order was never improved despite the obvious flaws. They kept forcing the same players into those positions.

Of course, it has come back to bite them on the biggest stage.

Lol 3 needed of 3 balls, 4 wickets in hand and you are batting against a minnow. How can a more experienced and bigger team loose in that scenario. Pathetic batting line up.

Well played Zim!

Pakistan will struggle to beat SA in the form they are in.

All they need is to beat SA and hope India does the same. Far from a miracle. Pak very lucky that the Aus weather forced SA to share the points with Zim.

For a second, lets assume that we sent someone else than a half injured fast bowler (who could not run in with full speed to bowl) and that other person somehow made it back to the crease for the second run to make it tie.

The question that who would we send to bat in the super over is haunting me more than the actual defeat.

This stuff was heartbreaking. I'm happy for Sikander, if I have to take any positives. But no coping... in Aussie conditions we are just terrible.

God I miss shoaib Malik and hafeez we wouldn’t have lost if they were playing today. Malik would have steered us home. He should have played this World Cup!

Thank you for the match summary and stating the obvious. How about just admitting the team are chokers with no mental strength and are better placed playing against school kids.

Pakistan lost this game at the selection table.
Nawaz selected as a batsman ahead of A. Ali and Kushdil.
We have good quick bowlers who were/are somewhat in form... WHY risk Afridi?

Pakistan gonna Pakistan.

Pakistan lost simply because a lot of the batsmen were clueless on how to bat on a quick bouncy wicket.

From Babar to Mohammed Wasim it was torture to see on how many plays and misses had occurred against a somewhat decent but overall English county standard bowling attack. They had some height for sure but nothing to be frighted of.

It just shows that producing slow low wickets mean Pak can win at home more often but it makes them look like deer in headlights on quick hard wickets, even against an average bowling attack like Zimbabwe.

Shadab bats like a king in the PSL and bats at no 4 for Islamabad United. That tells you everything about the quality of the PSL.

It’s nothing to do with quality of PSL.

It’s alien conditions and playing with the right mindset.

A lot of our players didn’t adjust to the conditions but the ones that did got out at the wrong possible time - Shan Masood was well set and beforr Shadab Khan who probably thought he could keep clearing these massive boundaries effortlessly when he probably forgot you don’t get rewarded for mishits in Australia too often unlike smaller grounds in Pakistan.

Just poor planning and buckling under pressure.

Oh my, I didn't even realize there was a match between Zim today. I popped in Cricinfo to see the result .. Shocking (not really). Raza has been in the form of his life!

After yesterday's match against BD, SA is well-positioned for that semi-final spot. Also, SA batting has been dangerous so far in the last two games.

Leaving everything aside that man Nawaz lost this match. 4 runs and 4 balls he got panicked and tried to clear the boundary instead of taking 2s or 1s

Pakistan team is quality team with some great names . I believe the game against India really took a toll on them . We need to be considerate here . Last time India was in similar situation . T20 is really game of unpredictables . None can be said till last ball is bowled . Also I think may be Pakistan team focussed more in Nz and that took their extra bit there which was found lacking here .

Leaving everything aside that man Nawaz lost this match. 4 runs and 4 balls he got panicked and tried to clear the boundary instead of taking 2s or 1s

That's twice he's choked up, once with the ball, once with the bat.

Disordered thinking/poor decision making with ball and bat like that is actually among the clinical psychological signs in sports psych of a choke. He needs some work there if he's to be of value in the future.
