Test cricket changed a lot in modern times. Its no longer all 'Block Block'. You need to maintain a run rate of 4 to become a succesful test side. Precisely the likes of Hayden, KP, Sehwag were so successful in test cricket.
Pakistan need a dasher in the top order in order to become a successful test team.

Why are people surprised?

Hafeez is NOT a test opener, and Khurram Manzoor averaged 37 in FC cricket last season, in PAKISTAN. Average of 37 on Pakistani wickets is not good enough.

YK dismissal was unlucky.

Haris Sohail averaged 60+ two seasons but was never given a chance in tests..He still averages 50+ in Fc overall so if that's the argument then he should be playing ahead of Khurrum Manzoor.

Shezad is a good opener. Even if he is strugling in ODI's, he is not getting out to the new ball. He is getting out when trying to accelerate.
Umar Akmal is the best Pakistani midle order batsman, he is not even in our test squad.

So we need to open with Shehzad and someone else than Hafeez, who is the worst ever test match opener.
We need Umar Akmal to bat at 4 in the test side.

I think Misbah and Azhar are solid now. No need to rush and do something stupid. Test lasts 5 days and Zimbabwe aint going to make Pakistani bowlers toil for more than 2 sessions imo. max 3. So pakistan can afford to go slow, preserve wickets and not be bothered with run rate at all.
