This is a largely symbolic conflict so shooting down two indian planes and capturing a pilot is more significant than losing one higher quality f-16. The loss of more f-16s would be telling in a longer war but then Pakistan cannot sustain a long conventional war with India anyway. This is more about oneupmanship than anything else. Of course loss of life one either side is regrettable but we are unfortunately in a situation where soldiers lives will be treated as statistics.

Indian media confirming that one of the crash was indeed Mi-17 helicopter and was not shot down. There is a video of a Kashmiri kid holding the mi-17 log book.

So we can confirmed 1 Indian Mi-17 and one MI-21 shot with video footage. Unconfirmed one more MI-21 or 27 of IAF and one F-16 of PAF.

An Indian helicopter has reportedly crashed in occupied Kashmir as Pakistan launched an air raid across the disputed border in retaliation for air strikes yesterday.

“In response to PAF strikes this morning as released by MoFA, IAF crossed LOC. PAF shot down two Indian aircrafts inside Pakistani airspace. One of the aircraft fell inside AJ&K while other fell inside IOK. One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground while two in the area,” a Pakisani military spokesman said.

Pakistan’s spokesman for Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammad Faisal, tweeted: “(the) sole purpose of this action was to demonstrate our right, will and capability for self defence. We do not wish to escalate but are fully prepared if forced into that paradigm.”

Pakistan vows retaliation after India strikes

The dramatic escalation between the two nuclear powers came hours after Pakistan said mortar shells fired by Indian troops from across the frontier dividingthe two sectors of Kashmir killed six civilians and wounded several others.

Pakistan’s army spokesman Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor said Pakistani troops on ground captured the Indian pilot. One of the downed planes reportedly crashed in Pakistan’s part of Kashmir while the other went down in Indian-controlled section of the Himalayan region, he said.

Indian air force spokesman Anupam Banerjee in New Delhi said he had no information on Pakistan’s statement.

Earlier, senior Indian police officer Munir Ahmed Khan said an Indian Air Force plane crashed in Indian-controlled sector of Kashmir and that it wasn’t immediately known if there were casualties. Another police officer, S.P. Pani, said firefighters were at the site in Budgam area where the Indian warplane crashed. Eyewitnesses said soldiers fired in air to keep residents away from thecrash site.

Local and social media reports the aircraft came down at Garend Kalan village, 7km from Budgam in central Kashmir.

And while Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imrahn Khan has vowed to retaliate for yesterday’s air strike at a time and place of his choosing, it is not certain if the Indian helicopter was in fact shot down. India’s ageing air force has a deadly history of fatal aircraft accidents.

CROSS BORDER CONFLICT

The crash came as Pakistani police reported mortar shells fired by Indian troops from across the frontier in the Himalayan region of Kashmir have struck homes, killing six civilians and wounding several others amid increasing tensions between the two South Asian nuclear rivals.

Local police official Mohammad Altaf says six people, including children, were killed Wednesday in Kotli village in Pakistan’s part of Kashmir, which is split between Pakistan and India and claimed by both in its entirety.

Pakistani and Indian troops deployed in Kashmir often trade fire.

The latest civilian casualties came a day after tensions escalated sharply following a pre-dawn air strike by India that New Delhi said targeted a terrorist training camp in northwest Pakistan.

Pakistan says Indian warplanes dropped bombs near the town of Balakot but there were no casualties.

Kashmir is split between Pakistan and India and claimed by both in its entirety.

The Mi-17 helicopter that crashed in IOK was confirmed by the Indian media as a crash due to technical issue has what it looks like a missile strike on its tail. May be just a coincidental mark ? As of now only 1 Mi-17 heli belonging to the IAF has 100% evidence that it went down. Still no evidence that it was shot, does have a suspicious hole in its tail. Then there is a video footage of a Fighter jet going down.

IAF gives the utmost respect to their fallen comrades even if they are just Maintenance Engineers(Aircraft Technicians). IAF will not hide their casualties like the Army.

Correct. This is how it has gone so far:

1) A Kashmiri resident, who had joined Jaesh, kills 40 Indian soldiers.
2) Pakistan warns India against any aggression, "We won't think about retaliation. We will retaliate!"
3) IAF crosses the LOC and drops their payload on some trees, upon the arrival of Pakistani jets.
4) The Indian media, celebs and politicians beat their chests, throw out nonsense claims of 300+ dead, etc.
5) PAF cross the LOC without much incident.
6) IAF violates Pakistani airspace a second time but this time, lose at least two jets and at least three pilots.

Let us hope 7) is simply Pakistan returning the prisoners and the situation deescalates.
