2021 Men's Asian Champions Trophy Hockey

Mens Asian Champions trophy Hockey tournament will take place this year in Dhaka Bangladesh as the Host.

The tournament will begin on 14th December, and will end on the 22nd of December.

This will be a 6 team tournament, in which all teams will be placed in round robin, with the top 4 advancing to the semi-finals.

This will be the 7th edition of the tournament, Previously India won the tournament 3 times, and Pakistan also won the tournament 3 times as well. Aside from India and Pakistan no other nation has won this tournament so far.

Tokyo Olympic Bronze Medalist Team India are heavy favorites to win this years tournament.

Pakistan will be with new coach Siegfried Aikman who is from the Netherlands, he previously coached Japan hockey team. Will be interesting to see how Pakistan performs under him, he will be a long term coach for Pakistan, as he will be looking to work with senior team, and also with the development of junior and grassroot level as well. His contract is a 5 year term and will end in 2026.

The 6 teams participating are the following

Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Will be looking forward to see how this tournament turns out this year.

Malaysia Hockey Team, has withdrawn from this tournament, due to a player testing positive for Covid. This will not be a 5 team tournament.

Poor day for both South Asian teams.

Most of the Indian players I couldn't recognize. I read that 10 players from Tokyo Olympics squad have been rested, that inexperience showed the way we gifted away our 2-0 lead in the final 20 minutes. Horrible goalkeeping by the rookie to allow a soft second goal. Also pathetic finishing by us, missed so many open goals even in dying minutes of the game. But in a way good to have youngsters spend more time on the field, nothing quite like international experience, our target should be the next WC and Paris 2024, mainly Paris which I fervently hope is the breakthrough Olympics for Indian sports.

Saw most of the Pakistan game and Japan was bullying them. Hardly any scoring chance by the Green Shirts while Japs came so close to scoring many times. Credit to some of the clutch Pak defenders and GK, to reduce such a match to goalless draw. Could very well have been a hammering if not for them. Basic errors in trapping and easily losing ball possession by many Pak players. I won't be surprised if Japan wins this event, they have improved so much.

Malaysia pulling out has removed the intrigue, since we know Bangladesh won't finish in top 4. Only order of the 4 teams matters now, 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 in SFs.

Day after tomorrow is Ind vs Pak. Ind looks like the better overall team but Pak has a clear edge when it comes to goalkeeping duties. Hope these two teams meet more than once, preferably in the final the second time.

There aren't many Indian hockey fans either apart from the time they take part in the Olympics. Sad to see the decline of the sport in the subcontinent.

If an Olympic medal in hockey can't revive interest in the sport in India, we don't deserve success in sports, Olympics etc.

Sad to see a fringe sport like cricket get 99% media attention while far greater athletes from other sports are consistently ignored despite winning Olympic medals and World Championships.

We have 0 ICC trophies for 8 years now, but these serial losers continue to get more media coverage and love from public than Olympic medalists. Crying shame.

Same with Pak fans, you guys have forgotten your past world beating hockey and squash players, but continue to place mediocre cricketers on a pedestal. Someone like Arshad Nadeem has already achieved more than any Pak cricketer in the last 20 years (at least), equivalent of India's Milkha Singh or PT Usha, but hardly any media coverage about him.

Sri Lankans probably know more about Ramesh Mendis than Jayasinghe.

No sports culture in the subcontinent.

Sport is now science and it requires a lot of money, effort, and time. I won't comment about other countries but the reason why Pakistan is so far behind in sport is that there's no real interest in building athletes and spending money when no one is watching.

I was crazy about sports as a youngster and not just one sport, all sports. We used to play cricket in the cricket season, hockey in the hockey season, football when it was the world cup, and other sports when the Olympics were shown including swimming, shooting, badminton, etc. The problem however was that we never knew how to pursue these things further and the culture within the family was such that these things were discouraged. We never bought hockey sticks, we used to find tree branches that looked similar to hockey sticks and played with them. I'm not saying we were world-class or could have achieved a lot but we never had a chance to actually explore that side of our personality. We just had to pick education as a primary field and never thought of pursuing a dream which is what many kids my age had to do as well.

Another example, one of my class fellows could do a 12-13 second 100 m, you'd say it's very slow but he was totally untrained and just did it for fun. The same guy could actually do a very decent high jump, long jump, and was a very good athlete overall (also over 180 cm. in terms of height). Now, this guy is working in some consultancy as something and has totally given up on sport despite having so much raw talent. I'm pretty sure the amount of raw talent he had, he could have shaved a few seconds of his 100 m run and become at least a national level athlete in Pakistan.

I'll compare this with Sweden where I'm now; there's a sports field offering multiple sports facilities to young kids of all ages almost at every corner. Parents take their kids there almost every day and they train them properly. Every school offers a range of sports that you can pick and you are trained in it if you have even a hint of talent, you are sorted for life. The investment in sports is high because the governments try to reduce their healthcare bill and if the people of the country are spending enough time on sports, chances are they'll be healthier and have fewer obesity-related issues.

Pakistan meanwhile is still stuck in another century. No pathways for kids, no role models, schools that look like prisons without any outdoor spaces, and whatnot. It's a miracle that our cricket team still hasn't diminished like our hockey team so when people say that Cricket has ruined other sports, it's not true. We should never have forgotten hockey but dumping the blame on cricket is just wrong.

Good post, agree with a lot of what you have written. India is similarly placed, maybe things are improving now in certain urban clusters but to a great extent we suffer from similar problems.
 
India defeated Bangladesh 9-0. Didn't watch the match. We play Pakistan next.

Thanks man. I got into cricket really late, i was more into soccer and ice hockey ( since im born and raised in canada) I have always liked field hockey, since it was kinda of a mixture of soccer and ice hockey for me. In fact watched field hockey first before getting into cricket.

In regards to Indian fans, they should really support their team. Indian hockey has come a long way, and they have some great talent coming up as well. Even their womens team has improved so much. When India did not qualify for the 2008 Olympic games, a lot of fans thought it was going to be the downfall of Indian Hockey. But the way they turned it around was incredible, it did not happen overnight, but winning an Olympic bronze Medal in Tokyo is a huge accomplishment. Indian cricket fans should really follow their hockey team as well, its a good team, and will be a strong team for the years to come

Historically Pakistan have the edge, but in recent times India is clearly way a head of Pakistan even if you look at from 2010 and onwards, India has won way more matches, prior to that Pakistan has an edge, but from 2010 onwards, India has dominated Pakistan in Hockey, and its also during around that time period changes were made in India hockey to make it a better and stronger team.
 
Just like cricket I miss Indo-Pak hockey test series. Was a common feature till first half of 2000s. We would regularly play each other home and away in series of 7, 8, 9 matches in front of packed, screaming crowds. Pakistan used to win those series but it would always be hard fought and thrilling.

I remember watching a lot of those as a kid, even when it looked like India was playing better suddenly Sohail Abbas would convert his PCs like a machine and help his side win. It was a recurring theme in that rivalry, India almost always scored field goals, Pakistan would score some field goals but relied a lot on their PC expert Abbas. He is one guy who ensured Pak was a strong team even when their overall game had declined compared to their amazing 80s standards. What a beast he was, nightmare for Indian fans. Our cricket fans experienced heartbreaks like Miandad's last ball 6 or Salim Malik's blitz in Eden Gardens, but with Sohail Abbas such heartbreaks became a common feature for us, no matter how much we outplayed the Green Shirts, we all knew that Abbas would score 2-3 game changing goals via PCs. One of the greatest players of all time, lethal drag flick expert. Wish India develops a player half as good as him in the future, just one such guy can change color of a bronze medal to gold.

Pity this generation of fans who haven't watched the hockey rivalry between the 2 sides. Win or lose we always see lots of artistry and dribbling skills, unique Asian style of touch hockey which the European powerhouses never play.

India had Jugraj Singh who was as lethal as Abbas ,had Jugraj singh been not involved in an accident things would have been different.Abbas himself had said that he sees his younger version of him . Source wiki

Men's Asian Champions Trophy 2021: India beat Pakistan 3-1

DHAKA: India on Friday beat Pakistan by 3-1 in the Men’s Asian Champion’s Trophy 2021. The two great competitors and titleholders played the much-awaited match in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

India took the lead in the first quarter by scoring 1-0 against their arch-rival, while in the third quarter, Pakistan's Junaid Manzoor scored a goal for his team.However, India's Harmanpareet Singh pulled off another goal in the third quarter to lead his team towards victory and paving way for the team to qualify for the next stage.

Harmanpareet Singh scored two goals and Akashdeep Singh scored one goal.

It is pertinent to mention that both the teams won the title three years ago in Oman. Pakistan holds a phenomenal record by winning four times in the Champions Trophy, while India won the inaugural event in 2011.

India have improved their game in the last three years and was favourite to win today’s match by being in the top three teams of the world. While Pakistan, ranked 18, remained secluded from International Hockey after missing the inaugural FIH Pro League two years back.

From the 2020 Olympics I believe India have 5 players from that squad, big omission was goal keeper PR Sreejesh who is very solid, But india wanted to have a mix of experience and young players, even if India played a 2nd string team, they would still put up a good result, India Hockey has come a long way indeed. The result itself is still a good result for India. Their was some chances miss by India, and at the same time Pakistan goalkeeper was very good today too, but regardless the end result was an Indian win, which was expected.

I read that 10 players from the Tokyo squad are not here. But still a good mix of youth and experience, obviously we are looking at rebuilding post the Olympics.

3-1 is ok I guess, not much at stake in this tournament tbh, more important events next year. And Pakistan is better than its ranking, for some reason their federation didn't allow the national team to participate in Pro league, they haven't played much in the last 2-3 years. But they can't be underestimated, in the Olympics qualfier they drew Netherlands 4-4 in one of the games, so they are a dangerous team still. Don't be surprised if they win here, except Bangladesh all teams will qualify to the SF and from there just a couple of knockout games. India favorites but all teams except the hosts can win this trophy.
 
10-15k were watching live on the Hotstar stream today, an Indo-Pak encounter, imagine!!! Man of the match got a measly award of 150$. Zero activity on twitter. Why can't desis show some love to non-cricket sports featuring their countries?

imo its Indias tournament to lose, they have the strongest team on Paper still. Bangladesh and South Korea would not be a threat to India if they play them in the finals, Japan can be tricky but i can see India beating them easily.

Pakistan in recent times just cant seem to find a way to win, I think if they played India in the final, in order for Pakistan to win, India would have to play really bad, or Pakistan would just have to play an amazing game, Honestly Speaking i dont think either would Happen we might get a close game again But India would still win.

I think the team that could have been tricky for India would have been Malaysia , however they withdrew, I would still see an Indian Win if they played them too.

All in all India has all the boxes ticked to win the trophy. However in sports one fact is always true when it comes to the finals its truly any ones game at that point in time.

This is why I prefer American sports concept (except Superbowl). Best team usually wins in American ones due to the number of games they play each time in finals.

Irrespective let’s see, hopeful for an Indian win .

India's star performer was drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh who converted both the penalty corners that came his way and ended up scoring a brace for India. "I think it is not about only Pakistan. What we are thinking whenever we get into the pitch we are playing against any team we feel the same. Even Pakistan are a very good team. They also got a lot of opportunities but are always happy to win against Pakistan. " said Harmanpreet Singh after the match.

India did make a lot of chances in the first two quarters but could only score one goal. Coming into the third and fourth quarter, India worked on their flaws and scored two more goals to end up scoring 3 goals in the match.

"We got a lot of opportunities in the first quarter. So, I think we have to be more focused on that. Whenever we get a chance we have to finish that. It will be easier for further quarters," explained Harmanpreet Singh.

India have rested a lot of experienced players from the squad that played in Tokyo Olympics like PR Sreejesh, Mandeep Singh, Surender Kumar, Simranjeet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Nilakanta Sharma etc while some players from that squad have taken retirement from international hockey like Rupinder Pal Singh and Birendra Lakra.

All these rests and retirements have come as opportunities for these youngsters like Suraj Karkera, Krishan Pathak, Gurinder Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Dipsan Tirkey and Mandeep Mor. The inexperience of these youngsters was visible on the field as they got a lot of cards reducing the team to 10 men on the pitch.

"We have a lot of new players. We have not played for the last few months. This is our first tournament after Olympics. There are some new because of that. If you talk about performance, then we can improve on a lot of things," told Harmanpreet Singh after the match.

"We can avoid cards and improve on that. For the future match, I think we can improve these kinds of things. We don't get any easy card and all whenever we get a chance we finish properly, "he added.

The three-time champions India are unbeaten in this tournament so far and are also on top of the points table with 7 points in their kitty from two wins and one draw. Harmanpreet credits the entire team and youngsters for India's unbeaten run in the ongoing tournament.

"It is all because of our hard work and also luck. The boys are doing really good and some of the new boys are doing really good. It is all about our hard work and whatever practice we are doing in Bangalore," said Harmanpreet.

India's entry to the semi-final is a certainty now and if they iron out their flaws, then they will be able to create strong bench strength for the future as well as these youngsters have shown that they have a lot of talent and potential.

In international sports since its tournament format they wont do american style were you have best of 3 games , best of 5 or best of 7 because it would be too long. I agree with you it would be better but due to the fact that it would be tooo long we wouldnt see this type of thing in international tourneys

India should target World Cup next. Right now they are way above Asian standards. With the decline of Korea and Pakistan - Asian hockey is a joke

(1st place) India vs Japan (4th Place)

(2nd Place) South Korea vs Pakistan (3rd Place)
 
Hoping for an Indo-Pak final.

Looking at today's level displayed by India, we should cruise to the finish line. But never know with knockouts, more unpredictable things have happened in sports.

Tomorrow rest day. After that back to back days of action, semis on 21st, final and third place match on 22nd.

For the first time in this edition we are scheduled to have night matches. How different are the conditions at night? Weather should be nice, but does the astroturf play faster or slower?
 
Bangladeshi team had a good outing. Usually in these events they concede goals in double digits every single match. And don't score.

This time they scored 2 against Pak, 2 against South Korea. Gave a scare to the Koreans.
2-3 against South Korea
2-6 against Pakistan
0-5 against Japan
0-9 against India

Decent showings for a team ranked below Ghana, Trinidad-Tobago, Oman, Chile, Belarus, Egypt etc.
 
DHAKA: Pakistan on Sunday qualified for the semi-finals of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy after defeating Bangladesh by 6 -2.

In the last group match of the Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka, Bangladesh played a brilliant game against Pakistan in the first quarter and even took a one-goal lead in the 13th minute but Nadeem Ahmed scored for Pakistan in the very next minute to equal the score.

In the second quarter, Pakistan launched a goal attack several times and ended up scoring 3 goals in a row.

In the third quarter, the Pakistan team continued the attack and scored more goals, while the home team managed to add a goal to the scoreboard. However, at the end of the allotted time, Pakistan won the match 2-6 and made it to the semi-finals.

Nadeem Ahmed and Ijaz Ahmed scored two goals each for Pakistan.

It should be noted that Pakistan will face South Korea in the semi-finals on Tuesday, while India and Japan will face each other in the second semi-final.

If India do not win this tournament it will be a bad result for them. They are Olympic Bronze Medal, and clearly the strongest squad in Asia, any other result would not be acceptable. The amazing thing for Indian Hockey is they have a lot of fine young talent coming up as well.
 
Watching pak vs korea, Pakistan dominating so far but Korea got 2 plenty strokes.

Was just checking rankings and Pakistan is ranked 18th. Wow!! Unbelievable where we have fallen and also korea they are ranked 17.
 
Korea is playing tactical game. Winning 3-2 now. Pakistan just keep making mistakes in defence. Second PS korea got was controversial
 
Rookie mistakes by Pakistan defense. Korea is winning 4-3 but Pakistan has dominated proceedings.
 
5-3 to korea now. Pakistan defense lacks discipline which is the biggest issue. Very difficult to come back with 15 minutes left
 
Pak playing well but so many unforced errors, like that dangerous play 10 seconds before end of Q2 which gave the Koreans a PC. Coach Aikman said they lacked discipline in the first half.

Talent is visible, just need to cut down schoolboy errors. Hope Pakistanis bounce back, way more entertaining than the Korean team.

Yellow card for a Pak player, excessive appealing. Out for 5 minutes.

Now Koreans win a PC. 5-5 with 5:25 min remaining.
 
Pak GK stopped 1st PC, then Koreans convert next PC.

Korea ahead 6-5.
 
Don't care if India wins or loses the next semi. If we lose, another Indo-Pak clash which is the only interesting clash in this event.

If we win, a shot at trophy. Ok but who cares about this stupid tournament? More so with Malaysian pullout (COVID), the second highest ranked Asian team. This was just a chance to try out youngsters before the important tournaments next year, and I am glad we did.
 
Korea was outplayed handily by India and Japan in the group stage but they somehow held on to draws. Today they didn't outplay Pak but won. So much luck for them.

I thought Pakistan defense made too many basic errors. Korea did well to capitalize. Pakistan was the better team today but in the end what matters is who won.

Even I thought so. Brilliant play by them today. But luck plays a huge role in knockout matches.

Looks like we are destined to have another Indo-Pak game. Don't mind that one bit.
 
Like Korea earlier today, Japan got two penalty strokes in the first half, converted both.
 
Did not see the pakistan match but seemed like the match of the tournament with Pak almost pulling a comeback. Congratz to Korea for making the finals

Combination of both I think. Indian coach in half time interview said Indian players were sleeping and that Japanese wanted it more.
 
Indian hockey team aping Kohli led chokers.

But at least here we are playing so many youngsters, good learning curve for them. Dominating group stage is always easy for higher ranked teams, winning knockouts is the real test.
 
Japan now leads 5-1. Crazy couple of days ago India beat Japam 6-0.
Just goes to show nothing is for sure indeed.

Here world number 17 Japan is slaughtering Team India after losing to us 0-6 in the pool game

First we must solve our choking problem, then we can talk about 'Asian standards'. Losing to Malaysia and Japan in games that matter, we certainly have no right to call Asian hockey a joke.

We may be world number 3 but our record in big matches is bad. Big difference in our quality in pool/group stage compared to knockouts. Not much different to the cricket team.
