WASHINGTON: Despite not being on the list of President Trump’s “Muslim ban” countries, Pakistan is experiencing a significant decrease in a number of non-immigrant US visas issued to its nationals under the new administration.

An analysis of newly released official figures shows non-immigrant visas granted to Pakistanis are down by 40 percent in March and April this year compared to the 2016 monthly average.

The State Department data shows that Pakistanis were issued 3,925 non-immigrant visas in April and 3,973 visas in March this year under the Trump administration. The data shows that Obama administration last year issued a total of 78,637 non-immigrant visas to Pakistanis with a monthly average of 6,553, 40% higher than the current average.

Before March this year, the State Department did not release monthly breakdowns of visas and only annual figures were available. So this correspondent compared the March and April 2017 figures with monthly averages for 2016. Even in 2015, monthly average remained 6,179 as a total of 74,150 Pakistanis had been granted visas.

When contacted by The News, a spokesperson for the State Department said: “Visa demand is cyclical, not uniform throughout the year, and affected by various factors at the local and international level. Visa issuance numbers tend to increase during peak travel seasons, such as during the summer and the winter holidays, though there may be different trends in the country, nationality, or visa category level,” the spokesperson said.

Interestingly, the number of non-immigrant visas has increased for India by 28% in March and April this year as compared to the monthly average of 2016. The state Department data shows Indian nationals received 87,049 visas in April and 97,925 visas in March. Last year, people from India received 72,082 non-immigrant visas each month on average with an annual total of 864,987 visas.

Pakistan is not the only Muslim country experiencing a decline in non-immigrant US visas. A similar analysis of 50 Muslim-majority countries reveals that the number of visas issued to their nationals has also declined by 20% in April as compared to their monthly country average last year.

Six countries targeted by Trump's March 6 travel ban — Iran, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen experienced 55% decline in non-immigrant visas compared with last year’s monthly average.

It is generally the case that travel to the US has declined significantly since Trump came to office. Pakistanis are likely less interested in traveling to the US than before, much like people from other Muslim countries.

Does this mean that less Pakistanis applying for visas or an increase in visas getting rejected?

The headline is misleading. The article doesn't state that visas are getting rejected. It could well be that people from Islamic countries are less inclined to travel to America after Trump took over. The increase in Indian visas again could be down to Indian companies beginning to respect the American visa system and rightly applying for the short term business visas instead of the long term ones

Indian nationals got 97,925 non-immigrant visas in March this year.

25 times more visas issued. India has population nearly 6 times that of Pakistan.

Such a matter of national pride and shows the global respect indians get. We should also get the numbers for australian visa, which is a poor man's usa.

Australia is not very popular among Pakistanis, in 2011 there were only 30,000 Pakistani's in Australia, compared to 3,50,000 Indians. (Which doubled in just 5 years from 2006 to 2011), 2017 estimates are 7,00,000 Indians and 50,000 Pakistanis.

Labor wages are higher in AU compared to US, Canada, UK.

Visas are getting rejected and also sending off back from airport

What's a non immigrant visa?

Self explanatory. 10 year multiple entry visit visa.

Nonimmigrant visa - for temporary visits such as for tourism, business, work or studying.

Immigrant visa - for people to immigrate to the United States.

B1/B2 = Tourism, Health, Business

F1 = Student

etc.

Yes dunno why Australia is not of any interest to Pakistanis. Obv US and UK are hard to get into.

But every Talha, Danish and Haroon wants to go to Canada.

Most people don't know about their immigration system and the obsession with Amreeka, Eng-laaaand and Kanayda is still strong. Educated folk mostly go for Australia and Canada because of their merit based immigration but the majority of people who emigrate are the cousin marrying kind who already have family in the UK and US (a UK educated friend of mine got married to his American cousin, went to the US and got divorced).

Indian logic: Lots of Pakistanis in a foreign country means they people are running away from Pakistan. Lots of Indians in a foreign country means those countries are not giving visas to Pakistan.

I don't see that in the article

Happened with my brother he went there to attempt USMLE Step 3 exam but they sent him back by saying " Your intention here shows you will slip?" glad he cleared his step 2 and became MD. Recently 25 doctors got their match but their H1 got rejected for no reason and sent back at immidiate effect

Sorry to hear that. Does not make sense to target students like that

You're generalizing half a million Pakistani-Americans off anecdotes.

Australia has a points based system for immigrant visa's, depending upon the needs for any particular profession.

A few years ago there were large numbers of Indians going to Australia to study hairdressing (for men ie nai).

It turns out that there was a racket going on because there was a shortage of barbers, and due to the points based system, it was easier to get a residency visa for 'qualified' nai's.

So a number of bogus colleges were set up, Indians paid large amounts to the racketeers to get 'enrolled' in these hairdressing 'colleges' and obtain student visa's. Once in Australia, and after obtaining the 'qualifications' to be a nai, it was possible to obtain a permanent residency visa via the points based system.

I'm guessing that there are large numbers of Indian barbers in Australia! :))

That's nothing average Joe's from the Punjab were coming to the UK under guise as some sort of religious leaders and than overstaying their visas in the UK to work as builders.

Not too sure about the barbers but there are plenty of chefs in Australia. I remember 4-5 years ago thousands came to Australia mainly from Indian Punjab on commercial cookery visas. People who couldn't even boil an egg came here for commercial cookery. Then they sponsored their partners (quite often paper marriages only). One of my Sikh friend told me how peolpe used to knock on doors in Punjab asking people if they want to migrate to Australia :))
