Naming an unchanged team is outrageous. It’s a big opportunity missed to try out some new talent, new leadership and new ideas.

They’ve got to at least play Curran and/or Woakes.

Even after being totally outplayed at Old Trafford and losing the Ashes, clearly for England the penny is yet to drop.

I would therefore reluctantly support another heavy defeat being inflicted upon England by Australia at the Oval. Perhaps the world witnessing such a thing would then be enough for the required wake-up call.

Looks like all dead beats will get one more test to save themselves from the chop, which is fair enough for once.

I would have definitely played Curran on his home ground and maybe bring in Vince to open up with Burns.
Foakes to keep, with Bairstow moving up to 4. Roy out and Denly to bat at 5.

I know its also about the Test Championship and there is still a series to draw here but we have to change it up and play the right players for the right format.

Burns
Denly
Root(c)
Pope
Bairstow/Buttler
Stokes
Foakes(wkt)
Curran
Archer
Leach
Broad

I think they will make some changes for the South Africa tour. If Roy doesn’t get a big score he will be dropped. Same with Bairstow. Sam Curran may get a go on his home ground.

Ben Stokes faces a bowling fitness test as England named an unchanged 13-man squad for the final Ashes match at The Oval.

The all-rounder bowled just 10.5 overs in Australia's first innings at Old Trafford before being forced off the field with right shoulder soreness and did not bowl for the remainder of the Test.

If Stokes is unable to bowl, he is expected to play in the fifth Test as a specialist batsman and England will turn to one of the two bowling all-rounders in the squad that missed out at Manchester, with either Sam Curran or Chris Woakes coming in.

One of the top-order batsmen would likely miss out in that case with captain Joe Root and head coach Trevor Bayliss deciding on the make-up of the side following any decision made on Stokes.

England fell to a 185-run defeat at Old Trafford as Australia retained the urn and head to their last international red-ball match trailing the five-match series 2-1.

The hosts can still draw the series and with Test Championship points still available, Root called on his side to turn up for the final Test of the series in London.

Despite England's batsmen having struggled throughout the series, the top-order looks set to remain in place, with Joe Denly having impressed following his promotion to the top of the order in Manchester.

The 33-year-old made a battling 53 off 123 balls in the second innings as the hosts fought to save the Test and is one of three batsmen to make more than one half-century in the series.

Meanwhile, Jason Roy's move down to No 4 brought him his highest score in Test cricket as he fought to 31 off 67 balls in the second innings at Old Trafford.

Seems like desperate attempt to give one last chance to butler, roy .

3-1 is pretty much on the cards for aus unless they play very poorly

England winning the final test match would set back English cricket by 10 years and Root will continue to captain. The best possible result for England is to lose this match by at least 100 runs or 6 wickets.

Yep, agree. Needs a big loss to wake them up to how bog average they are.

I think loss would be bad because there is Test championship now. Every Test is vital. There is no such thing called dead rubber now.

With test Tours away to NZ and SA next for england they will need to seriously improve the batting for both series.

I thought Indian test selection policies were weird but England is at next level. How the hell can one leave out Sam Curran from the test side? Maverick bowler and fantastic lower order batsman. Any team would want him in a heartbeat but not England.

Selecting Overton, Denly ahead of such a vital player indicates myopic vision of the selectors or cluelessness of team management and captain Root or a combination of both.

England don’t need to overreact. Yes Root needs to be relieved of captaincy duties, but there is no need of major personnel changes. They have to be patient with the likes of Roy, Buttler and Bairstow who are among the most talented players in the country and have already proved that they are capable of performing against international quality bowling.

Adjusting to Test cricket from ODI cricket is not everyone’s cup of tea, but you have to be patient. Furthermore, they need Anderson back.

In terms of personnel changes, they don’t need Moeen back because Leach has already proved himself to be a player with a bigger heart and a stronger mentality. However, they do need to get Pope into the lineup because he looks ready for Test cricket. Denly has played well in the last couple of Tests but he should be the one making way for him.

Anderson is on his last legs so how u can expect him to come everytime and save them,England needs to move on or he needs to stay till 600 wicket but will his body be ok to take the worload?

Marsh gets shock recall for fifth Ashes Test

Australia have named a 12-player squad for the fifth Test at The Oval, with allrounder Mitch Marsh coming in to replacing left-hander Travis Head.

Marsh comes in as extra bowling cover for Head, who has averaged 27.28 in four Tests this summer.

"The reason Travis isn’t playing is because we felt we needed extra bowling after a long series," captain Tim Paine said.

"We want to get the make-up right for this Test and unfortunately Travis misses out.

“He's disappointed he's not playing.

"No doubt he's in the top six or seven batsmen in this county."

Paine confirmed the final XI will be named at the toss on Thursday, with the four-man bowling attack from the fourth Test as well as Peter Siddle all named in the squad.

AUSTRALIA XII FOR FIFTH ASHES TEST: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Mitch Marsh, Matthew Wade, Tim Paine (c, wk), Pat Cummins, Peter Siddle, Mitch Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

Although I am unhappy with the England squad that has been selected for the Oval, they have picked what is probably the best possible XI from it -

Burns
Denly
Root (c)
Stokes
Bairstow (wkt)
Buttler
Curran
Woakes
Leach
Archer
Broad

Doesn't resolve the batting woes does it.

Chucking a few more all rounders at the problem won't cut it. Should've given Pope and Sibley a go.

looks like batting has been further hampered rather than improved, woakes and curran can bat abit but not genuine test class batsmen

Yes they need to be more patient with butler and bairstow who have player mere 101 tests between them .Even you should realize that there is only space for one of them in the final 11.

No 2 to 7 are batting above their ideal positions.

While a lot of blame has fallen on the batting, the bowling has also been circumspect. The English attack look limp without Anderson leading it, and what makes it worse is there is no quality spinner in the side.

Everyone says Lyon was ineffective against England, but that is wrong. Lyon might not have taken wickets but he stifles the runs. The games which England have lost:

Match 1

Australia
Innings 1 run rate:3.52
Innings 2 run rate:4.34

England
Innings 1 run rate:2.75
Innings 2 run rate:2.78

Match 4

Australia
Innings 1 run rate:3.94
Innings 2 run rate:4.34

England
Innings 1 run rate:2.81
Innings 2 run rate:2.15

I understand Smith is in epic form, but the bowlers give him too many freebies. On the other hand Lyon bears a brunt of the Aussie overs giving away very little.

The English batsmen have always been tied down by the Aussie bowling (except Starc at times). Many of them take 15 odd deliveries for their first run and go though long patches without taking a single run. Smith is the big difference between both batting line ups. But the Aussie bowling attack currently is way better than England.

Also Paine understands his bowling line up better. Root is a clueless captain, even more so when England are fielding.

Root's attack plans:

Plan A: Broad takes Warner and Archer blows away rest of the Aussies
Plan B: Broad takes Warner and Archer blows away rest of the Aussies
Plan C: Rain dance
Plan D: We're F****D!

Australia are obsessed with Marsh.

Always in the squads with his mid 20 average.

They pick him for the wrong format- has a decent ODI record.

True. Marsh only gets into side to allow captains to better manage workload of the 4 main bowlers. Also he is the only decent all rounder Australia has got in the format, even the Aus of 2000s (One of the best teams in history of cricket) lacked a quality all rounder and had to use Symonds and few part timers for those 10-12 overs to share the workload.

Watson was probably the best all rounder Australia produced in the last two decades or even more. I think they couldnt use him in tests as well as they could and even rushed his retirement to an extent by not managing him well.

Captain Joe Root says England must build towards winning the Ashes in Australia in 2021-22 after failing to regain the urn this summer.

England are 2-1 down and cannot take the Ashes back from the holders even if they win the fifth Test at The Oval, which begins on Thursday.

"We have to use the next two-and-a-half years to focus on putting in a winning tour down under," said Root.

"That's a real incentive for everyone, to be part of something special there."

England were beaten in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, meaning Australia have an unassailable lead and will leave the UK with the urn for the first time since 2001.

It also ended England's hopes of adding the Ashes to the World Cup they won earlier this summer.

It can be argued that England's Test cricket has suffered in recent years because of the emphasis they put on being crowned 50-over world champions for the first time.

But Root, whose position as skipper has come under scrutiny since the loss at Old Trafford, says he is clear on how he wants to take his team forward.

"I know the direction I want to take this team and it's about starting that now, not after this series," said the Yorkshire batsman.

"It's about trying to make sure we use this match as a stepping stone, win this game, have a really strong winter and move forward as a group."

Root, 28, also addressed questions on whether being captain affects batting. He averages 40.87 as skipper, as opposed to 52.80 when not leading.

"I've not performed how I would have liked," he said. "I'll continue to keep working hard and trying to improve my game."

He also believes that the World Cup-winning summer should be viewed as a success, even if the Ashes have not been regained.

"To win the World Cup for the first time is a huge achievement," said Root.

"Sometimes you get outplayed and we've had some challenges across the summer. There have been quite a few injuries and the weather has intervened in certain parts of games. The series could have looked different."

England have been forced to rejig the balance of their side because of a shoulder injury to all-rounder Ben Stokes.

With Stokes unable to bowl his usual amount of overs, fellow all-rounder Sam Curran comes in for struggling batsman Jason Roy, while Chris Woakes replaces Craig Overton in the pace attack.

It means yet another batting order reshuffle for the home side, with Stokes moving up to number four, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler shuffling up one place behind him and Curran slotting in at seven.

Australia have recalled all-rounder Mitchell Marsh for batsman Travis Head in order to ease the burden on their pace attack, which could be unchanged from Old Trafford. Fast bowler Peter Siddle is on stand-by in case they do opt for an alteration.

While the Ashes have been retained, captain Tim Paine said the ambition is to win the series and, for that reason, the last Test is a like a "grand final" for the tourists.

"We're very hungry," he said. "We have spoken a lot about it. We came here to win the Ashes, not just retain them.

"Last week's result at Old Trafford was brilliant and we played very well, but all the guys are aware that this Test is bigger than that one. We want this Test as much as any other Test we've played in this series."

Gets a test class batter in at #4 at least. If not a proper #4 like KP or Root.

Agree on Pope and Sibley.

Roy experimentation is finally over. A bit too late perhaps.

Curran should've played from 3rd Test.

England should pick this lineup for next test:-

Cook
Strauss
Vaughan
KP
Root
Stokes
Prior(wkt)
Woakes/Curran
Swann
Archer
Broad
