Bangladesh has signed an agreement with India to officially join the latter's initiative of South Asia Satellite.

Shahjahan Mahmood, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Harsh Vardhan Shringla, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh and India respectively here in Dhaka on Thursday.

In a press release, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said Bangladesh has now officially agreed to join Indian government initiative of 'South Asia Satellite'. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to launch a class communication satellite of 2 tons with 12 Ku band transponders (36 Mhz each) using ISRO's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV Mk-II) to serve the south Asia region.

Cooperation in fields like tele-education, tele-medicine and inter-government networks, emergency communication for disaster situation, television broadcast and DTH television services will be included under the satellite system.

The countries of South Asia except Pakistan will be part of the project that will bind the region in "a cooperative and collaborative effort for the benefit of the people this region". Earlier in the 2014 SAARC Summit Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the launching of a new satellite for SAARC countries.

Meanwhile, the Indian high commissioner said the aim of launching the satellite is to share the Indian expertise and technology for the development of the region. He also said it is a reflection of India's commitment to the development of the region.

South Asian Satellite GSAT-9 launched

Today, the two-year-old promise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi fructified when ISRO sent the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) on its 11th flight into space. Nicknamed the 'naughty boy of ISRO', GSLV carried the South Asian Communication Satellite to place it into its designated orbit.

The South Asian Satellite will cater to the communication needs of all the SAARC countries except Pakistan, which pulled out of it in, what seemed as its attempt to sabotage the project.

This isnt only bangladesh, but all SAARC countries bar Pakistan.

was Pakistan invited and it turned down the offer? or Pakistan was never invited? your post is not clear about it

Pakistan started raising security concerns asking if the SAARC satellite would enable India steal sensitive information related to the member countries. The concerns were dispelled by the Indian side.

Finally, Pakistan withdrew from the project saying that it has its own space programme. Pakistan said that it needed to focus on its national space programme.

From my source posted above.

Wow..didn't know that Pakistan had it's own space program, and it is older than ours ! :salute:

ISRO is one of the only government agencies that commands universal respect and isn't as corruption ridden as the rest .

They have given us gold each time, given the limited funding they get and that they mostly have to do whatever talent is left behind after the brain drain to the USA and Europe. I hope the government increases the salary of ISRO employees significantly to encourage more people to stay here !

Why? Did it turn India into a First World country ?

Did Chinese space agency turn it into a 1st world country in 90s? No, infact, China was struggling to keep up with India or even Pakistan at a point. Look at them now. What matters is progress.

I hope India shows similar interest in uplifting the poor of its own country.
