Former India international Farokh Engineer has slammed the current BCCI selection committee questioning their credentials and stature and instead advocating for the likes of Dilip Vengsarkar to be part of the panel.

The current selection panel is headed by former India wicketkeeper-batsman MSK Prasad and also includes Devang Gandhi, Sarandeep Singh, Jatin Paranjpe and Gagan Khoda.

Engineer, who played 46 Tests and five ODIs between 1961 and 1975, feels the presence of a strong-headed Virat Kohli has ensured selection isn't a worry. "We have got a Mickey Mouse selection committee," Engineer told The Times of India. "Virat Kohli has a major impact (in the process) which is very good. But how are the selectors qualified? Between them, have they played about 10-12 Test matches. I didn't even know one of the selectors during the World Cup and I asked him 'who the hell he was', because he was wearing the India blazer and he said he was one of the selectors. All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma (Kohli's wife) cups of tea. I feel people with the stature of Dilip Vengsarkar should be in the selection committee."

He cited the example of how Rishabh Pant has been handled, saying the youngster should have originally made the cut for the ICC World Cup 2019 instead of Dinesh Karthik. "They shouldn't have dropped him (from ODIs). They should have picked him ahead of Dinesh Karthik for him to get as much experience with MS Dhoni," Engineer, 81, said.

He was also critical of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) to run BCCI's day-to-day affairs whose reign ended earlier this month. "They (CoA) had no idea about cricket. (Diana) Edulji has played a little cricket but you need somebody who has knowledge of Test cricket, international cricket, international matches. The intention was good from the Supreme Court and the Lodha Committee, but the implementation wasn't done properly. It was a very very wrong choice of people (appointed in the COA).

The CoA was headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General of India Vinod Rai.

Farokh Engineer is a very accomplished cricket of his time but he has got the Pakistani ex-cricketers’ disease of running down anyone who is running India cricket these days because he is not getting a bigger piece of pie.

He could have said the same thing with tact too but he, like Shoaib, Waqar etc, goes for broad insulting barbs that sounds good to outsiders but does nothing to build his relationship within BCCI. Let’s see how it goes.

Absolutely right.

The problem is that indian team management likes to play total risk free cricket.
They don't want to blood in youngsters just coz of the fear of failure and how public will react to dropping their favourite old TTF.

"India mai batting talent bahut hai"
We don't want to hear this anymore, if thre is so much talent why has no batsman been able to take yuvrajs spot in odi team.

Playing veterans like rohit sharma, shikhar dhawan in t20 vs bangladesh just bcoz of fear of losing some points in irrelevant t20i ranking.

Youngsters like shaw, gill, kishan should have been the openers instead of rohit, dhawan.

There is no one in selection Committee who is bold enough to take a step against popular opinion.

Dada as bcci president gives us some hope.

Every word he spoke is true.

Couldn't have said any better.

Every word he spoke is true.

So does Shoaib or Waqar. Hindsight is always 100% correct. Nothing special.

But it’s not the content but how he said that will ensure that he remains on the sidelines. It’s not that India achieved huge during his time or was daring then.

India probably experiments most with its T20 squad than any other country but you can’t just send an U17 or Ajmer Municipal X1 team to Bangladesh.

This guy is just a loud mouth.

If India had won the World Cup, these would have been considered words of a cantankerous old man!

There must be some reason why India havent won a single ICC trophy since 2013.
No one can deny India's selectors have been poor

Very classy response by Anushka. Glad she is calling out these media clowns who stir up controversy and bring her into it just to create some drama.

Apologising profusely to Anushka Sharma, former India player Farokh Engineer said his comments were directed against the Indian selectors who had gone beyond their dignity to serve tea & coffee to Indian captain's wife.

"Yes, this incident had indeed happened. But I am not criticizing Anushka. She is such a lovely and charming lady. A wonderful human being. She and Virat Kohli are role models. I am not her detractor at all. If she has felt offended I apologize to her. I am so sorry if she felt bad. My ire was only against the selectors whom I found probably not doing their job. Nothing against Anushka or Virat," Farokh Engineer told Republic TV in an exclusive telephonic interview on Thursday.

Narrating the incident he had referred to, Engineer said he did not remember the time when it happened but the incident did take place. Probably Anushka would not be knowing who was serving what to her but the selectors should not have gone beyond their briefs. "It's not like Anushka had asked them to do it. I know them very well. They are such lovely persons. But can't say so about the selectors." Earlier in the day, Engineer had called the selection committee a "Mickey Mouse selection committee" with no appropriate qualification for the job. "We have got a Mickey Mouse selection committee. Virat Kohli has a major impact (in the process) which is very good. But how are the selectors qualified? Between them, have they played about 10-12 Test matches."

He had also said that Virat Kohli not only has a "major impact" on the selection process for the Indian team but also holds influence over the Indian selectors. Engineer had said he saw them (selectors) "getting Anushka Sharma cups of tea" during a 2019 World Cup match in the UK. "I didn't even know one of the selectors during the World Cup and I asked him who the hell he was because he was wearing the India blazer and he said he was one of the selectors. All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma (Kohli's wife) cups of tea."

What I did see at the World Cup was ICC officials literally carrying these VIPs on their shoulders.

At times it was cringeworthy.

Yea I remember the camera man kept showing Rihanna

Who cares if a team selector was serving tea to the spouse of one his cricketers or even a random person?

India has a very classist and caste-stratified culture, they think "serving" tea is bad and inferior for somebody of "high stature" lol. Reminds me of Cricketjoshilla calling Imran Khan a "chaffeur" for driving around MBS when he visited Pakistan. It's like they think basic adult things people do is beneath them and that these "jobs" should be left for working class people. As an American, I think that's a toxic culture.

Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor unveiled the ICC World Cup trophies for the men's and women's tournament at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday. The 2020 ICC Women's World Cup is slated to get underway from February 21 with Australia hosting India in the inaugural fixture. The men's event will begin from October 19 with Bangladesh taking on a yet-to-qualify team. "Bollywood (star) Kareena Kapoor is counting down to the @ICC Women's #T20WorldCup. Who's joining her to fill the @MCG for the final on International Women's Day?," the T20 World Cup tweeted along with a picture of Kareena Kapoor posing with the trophy.

Bangladesh and Thailand booked their places for the Women's T20 World Cup via the qualifying event. They will join the top eight teams -- Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies -- in the 10-team tournament.

Bangladesh have been placed in Group A for the upcoming World Cup along with defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka.

Thailand are placed in Group B along with England, South Africa, West Indies, and Pakistan.

The eight top-ranked teams based on finishing positions from the last ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies in 2018, automatically qualified for the tournament, as fixtures involving those teams were announced in January this year.

The final of the women's tournament will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on March 8 while the men's final will be played at the same venue on November 15.

Unless the selector left a selection meeting just to serve tea to Anushka Sharma, I don't see what the issue is.

Selectors have been poor, but dragging Anushka and using example of someone serving her tea is wrong. There are other ways to criticise the performance of selectors, however, the quoted example just shows our culture and upbringing.

Virat Kohli rubbished the "selectors getting tea for Anushka Sharma" during the World Cup 2019 allegation made by former India wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer by saying, she sat in the family box where no selectors were present. After Farokh Engineer made the remark, Anushka Sharma took to Twitter and said, she will not allow her name to be dragged into controversies related to Indian cricket. Virat Kohli echoed Anushka Sharma's sentiments and said, his wife is successful at a high level and that is why she gets noticed easily.

"She (Anushka Sharma) came for 1 World Cup game against Sri Lanka and the family box and the selector box was different, and there was no selector in that box. She came for 1 game with two friends," Kohli said during an interview with India Today.

"As I said, she is known, she's been successful at a very high level so when people take her name, it gets noticed," the India captain added.

The national selection committee led by MSK Prasad, includes, Devang Gandhi, Sharandeep Singh, Jatin Paranjpe and Gagan Khoda.

Kohli had tied the knot with Anushka Sharma on December 11, 2017 in Italy. Since then the Bollywood actor has accompanied Kohli on quite a few international tours and has also come to watch some of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

Anuskha Sharma was also present in Australia when India won the first-ever Test series Down Under.
