Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Iran have 4 more minutes. Doesn't seem like they can do it.

Good defense but average offense.

All over. Iran are out.

USA are scheduled to meet Netherlands in Round of 16. Easy game for the Dutch.

Iran were poor tonight.

They looked jaded and lacking ideas.

USA were very well organised and deserving winners.

The children of other migrant communities excel in sports so your retort is baseless..

This seems very personal to you, I don't think many Indians comment on less representation in sports as its a wide demographic , for example to South Indians Spelling bee would matter more than NFL but North Indians might prefer something else.

So the confirmed last 16 matches so far:

England v Senegal
Netherlands v USA

Marcus Rashford inspired England to the victory required to top Group B and ensure it was despair for Wales as they went out of the tournament after a bitterly disappointing World Cup campaign.

Wales needed to either beat England and hope Iran and USA ended in a draw or pursue the more unlikely outcome of running up a four-goal victory margin at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

England, who now face Senegal in the last 16, ensured neither scenario was ever a serious consideration as they dominated throughout and took full control after an uneventful first 45 minutes.

Wales manager Rob Page took the bold decision to substitute Gareth Bale at half-time, although the great talisman had only had seven touches in an anonymous display, but any hope the shock tactic would work was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart.

Marcus Rashford fired a free-kick past Danny Ward following Ethan Ampadu's foul on Phil Foden after 50 minutes, with the Manchester City midfielder then marking his return to England's team moments later by turning in Harry Kane's cross at the far post.

Wales were demoralised and outclassed as they knew they were on the way home from Qatar and Rashford added his second in the 68th minute, with a large slice of help from Wales keeper Ward who allowed a fierce shot to slip through his legs.

Christian Pulisic scored the winner against Iran that sent the United States through to face the Netherlands in the World Cup last 16.

The Chelsea forward turned AC Milan defender Sergino Dest's header over the line seven minutes before half-time.

But he collided with Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand in the process and needed several minutes of treatment - before being replaced at the break.

It was a match with lots at stake as both teams had a chance to seal a place in the knockout stages.

But Iran, who would have gone through with a draw, could not muster a shot on target as they were knocked out.

In the second half, they came close - Brentford's Saman Ghoddos came off the bench to strike inches over the bar when he was unmarked in the box, before Saeid Ezatolahi also curled over.

Perhaps their best chance came deep in stoppage time, when Morteza Pouraliganji met a free-kick with a diving header that went just wide.

And there was still time for controversy as Mehdi Taremi appealed for a penalty as he went down with Cameron Carter-Vickers trying to stop him, but their penalty appeals were rejected.

In the end, Iran exited the World Cup with a sense of disappointment as the USA made the knockout stages for the third time in four tournaments.

Actually, it's been a perennial concern for decades and there is a plethora of articles both from the subcontinent and other regions discussing the premise why are Indians so poor at sports. I'd surmise you either don't have a sporting pedigree and hence it's escaped your attention or you're aware of the issue but are being wilfully ignorant. BTW I'm of Indian origin and I can assure it's definitely a talking point amongst Indian/Asian sporting enthusiasts.

In any case my initial post was a side point and not in line with the thread so let's end this here..

Netherlands v USA, 2-1
England v Senegal 0-0, Eng to win on penalties 6-5

If there are no upsets, we may see these games in quarterfinals:

Netherlands vs Argentina
Spain vs Brazil
England vs France
Germany vs Portugal

8 top teams. No minnow.

Brazil vs Spain and France vs England will be absolute crackers.

Germany won't qualify for quarter finals though. Their defense is quite shaky.

Games to look forward today.

Argentina vs Poland ( want Argentina to win)

Saudi vs Mexico ( want Saudi to win)

Germany are likely to face Morocco in Round of 16. So, they may make it.

They must beat Costa Rica 1st and hope that Spain beats Japan.

Even if they qualify, they might struggle against Morocco in the Round of 16.

I want Germany to be eliminated. However, I expect them to beat Costa Rica and Spain should beat Japan (or at least draw it).

Even if they qualify for the last 16, Morocco might beat them. Morocco have been quite solid so far.

Never discount the Germans bar Brazil/France they can overcome any side, K.O.s have different sort of tension

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

And again we´ve witnessed in the ongoing tournament that, the team which sets its sight exclusively on a draw, ends up losing the match altogether! The way the USA were attacking in the first half, them scoring a goal was just a matter of time, and it happened in the end. Iran were defending well, but even one minor mistake was going to be enough, and it proved to be the case.

If Iran had played in the first half the way they did in the second half, they might´ve still secured a draw, but even then they didn´t look threatening enough to score a goal themselves. There were a couple of just "almost" moments, but that´s it about it. Disappointed by them. Congratulations to the USA! Deserved winners.

France are already through and will top Group D if they avoid defeat against Tunisia
Australia, Denmark and Tunisia could all still qualify for last 16
Australia are guaranteed to finish in the top two if they beat Denmark

Great goal by Leckie that, did it all on his own and puts Australia back in the 2nd position in the group.

Denmark is under huge pressure, they are running out of steam after that exceptional Matthew Lackie goal.

Still 1-0 to Tunisia.

Now only if Denmark could score a goal! Tunisia would be through then.

The Soccerroos have won and qualified for the Round of 16 for the first time since 2006.

Griezmann equalised in the 98th of 8 minutes stoppage and ruled out a minute later!!

Looked off. Scenes!!! Tunisia 1 - 0 France!

Denmark flimsier than delicatessen

France played their reserve side, but welldone to Tunisia nonetheless.

Result: Tunisia 1-0 France - Khazri with second-half strike

France finish top of Group D despite defeat after winning opening two games

Result: Australia 1-0 Denmark - Leckie scored crucial goal with superb run and finish

Australia finish second and secure place in last 16

Australia reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in 16 years after shocking Denmark.

The Danes, needing victory to progress, dominated possession but were caught out on the break when Australia scored the winner on the hour mark.

Denmark lost the ball in the Australian box and Mathew Leckie finished a brilliant counter attack with a low shot past Kasper Schmeichel.

Australia finish in second place in Group D on six points, only behind world champions France on goal difference.

Denmark meanwhile exit Qatar 2022 with just one point from three games, sitting bottom of the group.

Very good win and some real Joy for Tunisia but not enough. Their match V Aussies where they lost 1-0 was crucial, Tunisia were too defensive in the match.

Congrats to Australia, huge moment in their footballing history.

Les Blues reach yet another WC k.o stage:14:
Looks like Football in Scandinavian is declining, Denmark eliminated, Sweden Norway Iceland failed to qualify

Now only if Saudi beat Mexico.

Massive dilemma, to watch Saudi or Argentina? I think I will have both on and watch both at the same time, with no commentary.

Huge pressure on Messi , Mexico will bring it with everything they have.

The World Cup has reached the pressure cooker stage.

Will be watching the Saudi game and cheering them on this evening.

It could be a momentous game in their footballing history.

Also hope that the Argentinians go through. The prospect of Messi & Ronaldo facing off against each other in the later rounds is a tantalising one that I hope stays alive.

Great effort from Tunisia today. African/Asian teams have really done their federations proud in this WC.

If only they out as much effort in to their football as their protests. Invisible like their kits

France had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside in the final minute of stoppage-time as Tunisia held on to register a shock victory.

However, despite victory they failed to qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup.

Substitute Antoine Griezmann volleyed in a dramatic equaliser at the Education City Stadium, but the VAR decision meant Tunisia captain Wahbi Khazi's brilliant first-half goal proved to be the winner.

However, with Australia recording a 1-0 victory over Denmark in the other match in Group D, Tunisia's hopes of progressing had been dashed before Griezmann's goal was ruled out.

France are through to the last 16 as group winners having already secured qualification with victory over Denmark in the last game.

Despite their failure to progress, Tunisia captain Khazi produced the moment fans had been waiting for - a goal at this World Cup - when he drove to the edge of the box and coolly rolled it into the bottom right corner.

There was an outpouring of emotion from a large following of Tunisia fans at the stadium, while Tunisian substitutes sprinted onto the pitch in a moment of pure elation.

But their celebrations were shortlived when news of Australia's lead began to ripple through the stadium, with supporters checking their phones for updates from the other match in Group D.

France, who were much-changed from their win over Denmark having already qualified as group winners, lacked quality in a disappointing performance.

Paris St-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe and Atletico Madrid's Griezmann were brought on later in the second half to try and find a way back into the game.

They had an impact despite loud jeers and whistling from Tunisia fans keen to put them off and Griezmann almost provided the goal they craved.

Didier Deschamps' side are set to face the runner-up of Group C, currently Argentina, in the last 16 on Sunday, 4 December.

Tunisia's wait to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time continues as they exit the competition.

Dramatic evening as Tunisia hopes dashed
Tunisia knew they needed to win the game to stand any chance of progressing and they started with plenty of intent.

Goalscorer Khazri was a threat, while France defender Eduardo Camavinga was often overloaded out wide and needed support from Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate.

The support for Tunisia far outweighed France and that majority were given a brief outpouring of celebration when Nader Ghandri's volley flew past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, only to be ruled out for offside.

As the first half wore on, Tunisia fans' impatience started to show - though their support remained relentless - as chance after chance came, but goalkeeper Mandanda did not look like conceding.

Then a magical moment from Khazri opened up space for himself on the edge of the box and his low, precise strike beat Mandanga in the bottom corner.

Tunisia fans were full of hope - they were heading into the last 16 as things stood - but two minutes later, Australia's goal meant it was taken out of their hands.

Deschamps did not waste too much time in the second half to bring on Mbappe and Griezmann and from then on, France were on the front foot.

Tunisia clung on following a series of corners late on, but Griezmann eventually found the back of the net via a deflection.

However, France's celebrations quickly turned to frustration when the referee went to the pitchside monitor to view VAR and the goal was ruled out.

Iron Mike Tyson came to Messi's defensive after Canelo threatened him. lol

I have a feeling some hard tackles towards Messi tonight, very good chance of a Mexican being sent off.

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

What incredible drama that was towards the end with that off-side goal!

France had rested a lot of their main players, and Tunisia ensured that they pounced on the opportunity. Mbappe was on only for a half an hour and yet set a serious panic amongst the Tunisian team. What a highly skilled player!

Denmark neither did themselves a favour nor Tunisia and are out of the contention. Were really enjoyable to watch in the last year's Euro, though. Have only got themselves to blame.

Not easy to watch both matches together but Saudi playing well. Mexico are looking to exploit them down Saudi Right wing but very organised so far from the Royals Royces owners.

Argentina look up for it too but Poland are dangerous if Robert gets the ball anywhere near the box.

two good games

Argentina have been possessing the ball like 80% of the time. Poland is barely getting any ball.

Polish goalkeeper is being brilliant. Saved the penalty. Saved two shots earlier also.

0-0 at half-time for both games.

Argentina 0 - Poland 0.

KSA 0 - Mexico 0.

If games finish like this, Poland would top the group and Argentina would finish second. Argentina need a win to top the group.

France vs Argentina is quite possible in the Round of 16.
