Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Croatia demolished Canada (as expected).

Morocco now have a very good chance of topping the group. Croatia just need a draw in their last game to go through.

Anyone who has followed Morocco since 2018 will not think this win was a shock
They dominated vs Spain, Portugal and Iran in 2018 being very unlucky to lose 2 of them.

I remember Morocco almost beat Spain last World Cup.

Very good team.

Canada missed their chance to complete the early ambush against Belgium. They dominated that game and should have won it. Croatia was always going to be a really tough opponent.

Speaking of which, Belgium are awful, and Croatia will more than likely knock them out later this week.

Canada were good in passages but ran out of gas as the game went on. They weren't bad, but the score-line doesn't reflect that, somehow.

Croatia were brilliant after conceding a goal so early in the game. They kept attacking.

Canada are now eliminated. They should've drawn against Belgium. Opportunity missed.

Try watching football. It helps. Messi has been one of the best players in the world this season. He has been simply phenomenal for PSG.

Yes Messi is nothing with Xavi and Ronaldo, just like Ronaldo is nothing without Modric and couldn’t win the UCL with Madrid before he arrived from Spurs.

Farmers League he struggled in?. Riquelme didn't play 2010 and he was far more integral to Argentina than Messi ever been.

Tonight's Klasico should be fun! The Spanish technicians are back

He hasn't struggled in the French league. He just doesn't score enough goals anymore because Messi's game isn't about goals anymore. He is a playmaker and not a striker unlike your hero who needs others to create chances for him to score.

Seriously, Ronaldo has the worst fans in football.

Anyway, my last post on this topic, as requested my MenInG to keep this topic out of this thread.

Spain lack a centre-forward as do Germany.

Spain with a modern Villa would dominate again.

Inaki Williams was ideal

Incredible performance from Morocco.

This is so beautiful.

Raúl would score so many if in this time at his peak.

Tbf Spain just dont need to lose this one, its upto the Germans to make the moves but are struggling.

Germany being deprieved and starved of the ball for most of the match so far. Apart from that ine off-side goal by Rüdiger, things not looking too promising so far. Must up things right away!

Even Morientes.. Morata at his best was lacking.

Bizarre there's no Moreno in the squad

Germany doing well so far. Solid and well organised.

Here's Morata.

Spain looking good to win this one, they have dominated Germany so far.

Finally Spain scores 1-0.

Germany haven't lost back to back group matches ever in a World Cup edition. Looks like the will do now.

Spain have been brilliant so far. The team to beat in this World Cup.

Germany alive again.

Huge goal for them.

Musiala is such a wonderful player to watch.

Quick, creative and so clever on the ball.

Final matches in this group will be interesting.

Germany will be hopeful of Spain winning, so a win for them will get them through.

I would predict, Costa Rica holding Germans to a draw, going through and sending them to Berlin with another humiliating 1st round exit , 2 world cups in a row.

Another interesting group where any two teams can go through and any can go out. :)

This group is wide open, Spain are probably through though because of their great goal difference.

<b>Niclas Fullkrug gave Germany a precious point against Spain in a 1-1 draw, as they fight on for World Cup survival.</b>

Germany's hopes of reaching the knockout phase had been given an unlikely lifeline earlier on Sunday when Costa Rica beat Japan when any other result would have meant defeat by Spain would send them out.

Hansi Flick's side still need to beat Costa Rica in their final Group E game and hope Japan do not spring a shock against Spain but at least they know their hopes of moving into the last 16 are intact after falling behind at Al Bayt Stadium.

Spain, who almost went ahead in the first half when keeper Manuel Neuer turned Dani Olmo's shot on to the bar, took the lead after 62 minutes when substitute Alvaro Morata applied a brilliant near-post flick to Jordi Alba's cross.

Germany pressed forward and Fullkrug gave them a point seven minutes from the end when he burst through and lashed an unstoppable finish high past Spain keeper Unai Simon.

Leroy Sane almost won it for Germany in the dying seconds but ran out of space as he raced through on goal and the ball was scrambled clear.

Unfortunate for Canada started well hopefully they can improve and not let this be the best they do , will take time though.

Japan result was shocking and Belgium lol got beaten fair and square.

Canada still can be proud to make the world cup after 36 years and get first ever goal was something special. Canada losing was suspected, still feel dissappointed they were not able to draw with Belgium.

Japan result was shocking and missed a golden chance to advance. They will have to beat spain which is almost certain it wont happen

Japan can go through even if they draw (only if they become ahead of Germany in terms of goal difference).

Of all the slick passing and free flowing football, its the tall acrobatic strikers who scored for Germany and Spain...just shows the value of top class striker

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

A draw was a fair result in the end, I would think. Germany upped their game in the last 20 minutes or so, and it was good to watch. What was Sane doing there?! Man, what a miss! He was probably looking to steer clear of the goal-keeper to then either kick the ball himself or to pass it over to the other guy, but both the options were poor. He should´ve tried it himself about a second earlier or so. I hope that that missed opportunity doesn´t come back to haunt Germany on the last day of their group´s matches.

What an artist is Morata! His most soft deflection to effect that first goal was so admirable. I really, really, like this guy. There aren´t too many footballers right now whom I like more than him.

All in all, a good match. Germany stay alive but only just....

Match facts
Cameroon v Serbia (10:00 GMT)

Serbia have lost both of their previous World Cup games against African sides, doing so against Ivory Coast in 2006 (2-3) and Ghana in 2010 (0-1).

Cameroon have lost their last eight matches at the World Cup, with those defeats coming across four tournaments (2002, 2010, 2014 and 2022). Defeat against Serbia would equal the longest-ever losing run by a nation at the World Cup, set by Mexico between 1930 and 1958 (Nine in a row).

Serbia have conceded in eight of their 10 games at the World Cup, shipping at least two goals in six of those games. However, they have won both games in which they've managed to keep a clean sheet.

Cameroon have won just one of their 15 World Cup matches against European opponents (Drawn five, lost nine), a 2-1 win over Romania in 1990. They are winless in 12 games since (Drawn three, lost nine).

Anyway, some serious early luck for them here. Serbia hit the post. Phew!

GOAL - Cameroon 3-3 Serbia
Eric Choupo-Moting

WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT!!

Vincent Aboubakar is played in behind the defence again and lays the ball across for Eric Choupo-Moting to tap home and Cameroon are level!

Serbia was getting hyped up by a few. They lost 0-2 to Brazil and may now get a draw against Cameroon 3-3.

I expect the Swiss to defeat the Serbs and go through.

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

The weak defence of both the teams made it a spectacular affair in the end! Although I wish that Cameroon had made just one error less. :D

What a game!

Cameroon kept their hopes alive of reaching the World Cup last 16 after battling back from two goals down to draw a six-goal thriller with Serbia in Group G.

Cameroon took the lead through Jean-Charles Castelletto but Strahinja Pavlovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic replied to give Serbia a half-time advantage.

Aleksandar Mitrovic added a third for Serbia and they looked to be cruising to a win that would have put them in a strong position to progress.

However the Indomitable Lions roared back thanks to Vincent Aboubakar's superb lob and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's equaliser three minutes later.

Mitrovic curled a shot wide in the closing moments after being teed up by Dusan Tadic.

Both sides lost their opening match so the result leaves them two points adrift of Brazil and Switzerland, who meet later on Monday (16:00 GMT).

In arguably the tournament's most entertaining game so far, Serbia started brightly and Mitrovic twice went close to giving his side the lead. The Fulham striker hit the post before flashing a shot wide after the ball fell kindly to him in the box.

Cameroon took the lead against the run of play when Nicolas N'Koulou flicked on a corner and Castelletto tapped home from close range for his first international goal.

Serbia did not panic though and turned the game on its head in first-half stoppage time.

Pavlovic headed Serbia's first World Cup goal in 335 minutes of play before Milinkovic-Savic beat Cameroon keeper Devis Epassy, who was playing after Andre Onana was dropped for disciplinary reasons, with a low drive.

When Mitrovic finished off a brilliant Serbia passing move to give them a two-goal cushion, Dragan Stojkovic's side looked to be in cruise control.

However, substitute Aboubakar gave Cameroon renewed purpose when he beat the offside trap and scooped the ball nervelessly over Vanja Milinkovic-Savic for one of the tournament's best goals.

Three minutes later, the striker again beat the offside trap before squaring the ball for Choupo-Moting to level from close range.

While Cameroon looked dangerous when they pushed for a winner, it was Mitrovic who had the best chance to snatch three points, but the Fulham striker curled wide as Serbia were left to rue their inability to close out the match from such a strong position.

A defeat would have left Cameroon relying on the Swiss to beat Brazil in order to avoid elimination with a match to spare, but instead Rigobert Song's side retain hope of getting out of the group stage for the first time since 1990.

I don't understand the point of toss in football. There's no real advantage. They should reserve toss for penalty shootouts only.

This was the game of the cup imo!

The koren intensity at the end was a spectacle to behold.

I don't know the specific details of the rules but I think the ref should have given the corner!

FT: South Korea 2-3 Ghana

South Korea boss Paulo Bento is shown a red card for protesting after the final whistle. He's furious.

Bedlam on the pitch at the final whistle. Anthony Taylor is surrounded by South Korea's players. They had won a corner right at the death but Taylor blew his full-time whistle before it could be taken.

Agreed, the Koreans built persistent pressure in the last 15 minutes or so, but couldn't get the goal.

Ghana won an exhilarating match packed with twists and turns against South Korea in front of a vibrant crowd at Education City Stadium in Qatar.

A 10-minute spell by the African nation in the first half presented them with a 2-0 lead but noisy celebrations by Ghana fans at half time were dampened by a South Korea comeback after the break.

Two stunning headers in three minutes from Cho Gue-sung, top-scorer in his domestic league, levelled the game after 61 minutes.

But Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus, who had headed in Jordan Ayew's cross in the first half, added a final twist when he thumped in a third for Ghana to break South Korea's hearts.

Chances continued to fall South Korea's way as they searched for another equaliser but, despite 10 minutes of added time, Ghana held on.

With Portugal to come next for South Korea, this feels a significant defeat, while Ghana - unfortunate to lose against Portugal - will face Uruguay in good spirits in their final game.

What a match, what a day this has been so far! The 10 minutes of the stoppage time were scintillating to watch. Match of the tournament so far! Ghana held on to the lead but only just; just. So happy for them. I hope that they somehow make it through to the next round.

Well fought South Korea. A proud effort!

Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

It's all over.

Brazil join France in the last 16 of the World Cup thanks to Casemiro's late winner against Switzerland.

Casemiro scored a stunning winner as five-time champions Brazil edged past Switzerland to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

An otherwise drab encounter was brought to life seven minutes from time as Manchester United midfielder Casemiro fired a first time effort into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Yann Sommer standing.

Brazil backed up their opening victory over Serbia to top the group with maximum points and will guarantee top spot with a point against Cameroon in their final game.

Tite's men thought they had broken the deadlock after the hour mark when Vinicius Jr kept his composure to coolly stroke in, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.

Switzerland had sat compact for much of the game and did not offer any attacking threat, failing to get a shot on target in the contest.

Murat Yakin's thought they were going to escape with a point, but Casemiro's moment of inspiration had Brazilian fans bouncing inside Stadium 974.

This Brazil team doesn't have the flair of some of the previous Brazil teams, but boy do they work hard to get the ball back.

Vinícius Júnior looks like he could be one of the stars of the tournament.

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

Quite a bit is being said about the overall show by the Brazilian team - and I don't one bit disagree with it - but what with Switzerland? It was Brazil's game, mind you. They played below average, but then they played well for a brief period of time and scored. The match ultimately revolved around how they played, and they did seriously up their intensity once they got the lead and were pretty good towards the end there. That goal too was a high quality one. Loved watching it live!

They're such a quality team that they can turn up for even only 10 minutes and can end up scoring a goal. They qualify for the Round of 16 as well. However, the problem in big matches against some of the big teams is that there would exist a serious danger of a goal being scored against you, if you happen to go through a prolonged poor phase of play. This danger, of course, didn't quite seem to exist against Serbia the other day and against Switzerland today.

I agree i just hope it creates a football culture as well because except for Basketball other local Canadian sports are somewhat expensive for immigrants to get into esp hockey, football is the easiest to take.
