What's new

Arsenal FC | 2016/17 Season

Good win today, no complaints tbh. Seems as though we may have found the world class striker we have needed for years in alexsis sanchez. Hope we can keep him fit and get him to sign a new contract. He seems to have learnt quickly how to play as a cf. one thing he needs to work on is to coming into the midfield to get the ball as it leaves us without a focal point. But his finishing and work rate is fantastic.

was at goodison yesterday. very poor

Ozil poorer than others, got a few kicks and wasn't interested after that.

Arsenal fans at start of every season be like: this is our season

Bottlers or what.

Ozil the biggest flat track bully in the PL. By far the most overrated player in the league. Lazy player who very rarely performs when it matters and never grabs the game by the throat. And Arsenal fans sing that he is better than Zidane. Lol deluded bunch. :)))

the song is tongue in cheek. but you are rite he has extremely poor last couple of games and the away fans have let him know about it!

Couldn't see him yesterday

A terrible couple of games for Arsenal, not only have they dropped 6 points but all their rivals at the top of the league have won. Sure it's early days but being 9 points off top spot at stage is a big gap to close.

Arsenal posted this on Instagram - are we supposed to take it as a hint? :wenger

Will win the next few games than lose to Chelsea and Bayern in February and our season will be over. Hope this is wengers last season. Sick and tired of the same old rubbish. In the 2nd half vs city there was nothing there from the players and from Wenger tactically

typical Arsenal bottling it again as soon as February comes out of the title race. Battling for top 4 and FA CUP. Bayern will obliterate us. Groundhog Day every season for us. Wenger cant win the top prizes anymore hes finished. Needs to respectfully retire at the end of the season and we should go for Simeone in the summer.

Pathetic performance. Wenger is finished. We are a laughing stock. Hope this is last season. He has been given a lot of time and we aren't even close to challenging or winning the league.

It's ground hogs day all over again...

Ozil went missing. Sanchez was well below par and our difference was all over the place.

Walcott continues to be an enigma.

Wenger always defends his team as he should but continued to bury his head in the sand.

Should have been 5-0, Arsenal were lucky with us having a poor final ball on counter attacks. Hazard and Kante were unstoppable and it was against a big team which is something I've been wanting to see for a while. Great win for us and I think Arsenal are out of the title race now, it's been happening for a good 10+ years now.

Hasan123 Wenger is a finished manager. Living off the Invincibles for far too long now. He can only take a team to top 4 now. He is dividing the fanbase and its poisoning the atmosphere around the club.

Exactly. He can't change things up as well.

Thing is Wenger chops and changes Sanchez position too much. Ozil criticism is justified but Sanchez started of the season as striker and was on fire and so was Arsenal. Then Giroud returns and scores a scorpion kick so gets a automatic position in the starting 11 and Sanchez goes to left wing. Since Then he been playing all over the place, left, right or centre.
You can not do that. Can't believe Wenger changed Sanchez position just to accommodate Giroud. Arsenal were playing well with Sanchez up front.
Also poor old Perez, everytime he has got time out on the pitch he has looked dangerous and most likely to score but he couldn't make the squad. He is better player then Walcott and Giroud.

Hahaha take that Arsenal! That 3-0 victory against seems a long time ago doesn't it?
:inti

I agree with pretty much everything you've said.

Did anyone notice the irony in the third goal?

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Ex Chelsea player screws it up and an ex Arsenal player scores the goal.

Why the hell does Alexis play striker? Giroud is much better in that position. He is taller, stronger and better header-er.

Scoring goals isn't enough for a striker. If that was the case, then Messi and Ronaldo would always play that position.

He also assists and creates space for Ozil to run into. Walcott and Iwobi also look more threatening when Sanchez is up top.

Giroud is good against mid-table to lower table teams. But he won't score meaningful goals in big game. He scored against Chelsea yesterday for the 1st time in 10 or 11 attempts. His Champions League performance against Monaco was so dreadful omg.

Giroud might not be good enough, but neither is Sanchez. Arsenal need a real striker ASAP.

Arsenal fans must be worried about Sanchez remaining at the club now - if he wants money he could probably treble his wages by moving to China. If he wants trophies then there would be a line of top European clubs queuing up to sign a player like him. The same goes for Ozil.

Why do Arsenal repeatedly leave themselves in a situation where their top players are left with only 18 months on their contracts?

Mamoon different season same old rubbish.

I think it's time to look beyond the players. It's pretty clear that Wenger has to go. There is no other option. The squad isn't that bad, I can see a competent manager doing a much better job with the same set of players.

Someone like Alonso, who has been fantastic for Chelsea this season, would be no better than Gibbs in Wenger's setup. Players like Moses etc. would be useless as well. On the other hand, someone like Ramsey is world class for Wales but pathetic for Arsenal.

Last season was the biggest wake up call to date. With every other top club out of sorts, Wenger still managed to surrender the league to a team that is on the brink of relegation this season. It was a confirmation of the fact that Wenger will never win the league again.

Let's be honest, he has always been a tactical failure and not good enough to wipe the shoes of Sir Alex. He has been exposed ever since the Invincibles disbanded. He had a lot of success in his first 10 years, but he inherited a top quality defense and the genius that was Bergkamp.

In addition, at that time, he had unchallenged access to the French market where he could tap the top French talents like Vieira, Henry, Pires etc. He no longer has that advantage and has failed to sign the top French talents of the last few years like Benzema, Pogba, Varane, Griezmann, Kante etc., ending up with mediocre players like Giroud and Coquelin.

We need change. We have the money but we need a man who is tactically equipped to compete in the modern era. Wenger is a dinosaur who should be forced into extinction. Some people fear that Arsenal will only get worse after he leaves and it will be similiar to Man United in the post-Sir Alex era, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't do anything and continue to be mediocre.

Do you think we have enough money to sign TOP TOP players? And if we do why don't we spend it? Is the club kanjoos or Wenger doesn't like to overpay despite today's market being inflated?

Main issue is the wage structure at the club. Wenger has spent some money recently but hard to get a world class player when they probably earning more then or even double of what Arsenal players are getting.
Arsenal board are happy finishing top 4 and with the wage structure they have they can't attract very very big names so won't be splashing 50 million on a player. So they happy making good money and finishing top 4 every season.

Money and quality doesn't really go hand-in-hand these days. For example, Pogba is the most expensive player in the world but he is not even close to Verratti, who will go for half his price.

Arsenal doesn't have the money or the pulling power to pull off signings in excess of 50m, but as s.h.a.k pointed out, the wage structure doesn't help either. A lot of mediocre fringe players are getting paid too much money, and Wenger is a bit of a loyalist like Misbah. He will not let go of his trusted players until they cannot walk anymore. The likes of Rosicky, Arteta and now Mertesacker have overstayed by a good couple of years.

The Arsenal board doesn't have the passion for the game, but they don't stop Wenger from buying players. Since 2013, we have been happy to spend 40m each summer on an individual. That figure can go up to 50m+ if you get the fringe players off the wage bill.

Wenger is simply tactically outdated. He has had enough quality over the last 13 years to win at least one league title, and he was tactically exposed in the early 2000s when he failed to win the CL with the Invincibles in their pomp.

Looking at the possible replacements, names like Eddie Howie, that Salzburg guy, Martinez etc. are my worst fears because they will be grateful of the opportunity to manage Arsenal, knowing they cannot lock horns with Conte, Pep, Mourinho, Klopp etc. I believe they will simply continue the Wenger tradition of limping to 4th and keeping the board happy with CL money. However, Allegri is one name that interests me, and I think it's possible unlike Simeone. He is a winner who is already at a bigger club than Arsenal, and the Italians do not compromise on defense and tactics. He can transform the mentality of the club and the status quo which is clearly not good enough.

I'm actually scared about the Hull game.

Hull City have been a revelation under Marco Silva. We sometimes have the same problem that Liverpool had last week. Teams sit back against us and we can't break them down.

Need to make sure we finish in the top 3. Sanchez is definitely leaving if we end up playing Europa League.

A 2-0 win over hull does not paper over the cracks at the glaring problems with the team this season. Bayern will knock us out in the CL so that will leave the club with FA cup and trying to finish in top 4. The club is not moving forward and at end of season the manager needs to go and so do a lot of the mediocre players like ramsey, coquelan and a few others.

next season can be the great unraveling

Wenger, Ozil, Sanchez, Oxlaide, Wilshere, Ramsey could all be gone

Wilshere already looks like he is on his way to City.

its got to stage where I would like wenger gone if we could get Allergi or Simone

otherwise we are going out of the top 4 which will be an even bigger disaster

Will be interesting to see how Arsenal do against a Bayern team who are not playing at their full potential. I feel like they'll still get knocked out but I wouldn't be surprised if they won a game.

Wenger to get out thought by Ancelloti again this time, with a decisive 2-0 victory of Arsenal... (my prediction)

Ancelloti has done this to Arsenal plenty of times as a Chelsea manager... Wenger will probably organize the team defensively, but even then don't expect Arsenal to keep the opposition out for more than 30 minutes

Will overrated Ozil finally perform in a big game or will he still be an invisible man?

We aren't knocking Bayern out no matter how well we play.

Happy to be proven wrong.

another last 16 tie finished after the first leg. Wengers tactical naivety in Europe been exposed again. First half we were ok looked decent on the counter. But as soon as Koscielny went off the team capitulated. Bayern sniffed blood and like every great team they were ruthless and bullied us. The team again were found to be lacking in spirit in character in quality in leadership just like our manager who is bereft of ideas and is finished at the elite level. Just want this season to end and move forward with a new manager next season.

Not a surprising result.
It would have been more of a shock had we drawn this game.

Another pathetic performance in the champions league round of 16, can't take anymore of this totrture . Wenger should leave. Watching his interview and he looks low and depressed.

Damnit Arsenal drew. I was hoping for 5-0 Bayern.

For all you Arsenal fans and Mamoon - I will bring up a simple quote from Denilson back in 2011.

He was highly ridiculed at the time but it is so apt and true.

"There is something missing at Arsenal but no one knows what it is - not the manager, not the players, nobody."

It's sad to see Arsenal and especially Arsene Wenger regress so much.
What has cost Wenger the most is being too nice and loyal to a lot of average players. He is a changed man from the one 15 years ago. Expecting too much from average players. Hopefully this is his last season in charge. So a new manager comes in and gets rid of the average players.

Gibbs with the captains armband sums how Wenger being too nice has cost Arsenal.
And the only champions league winner in the squad Petr Cech gets benched in probably the biggest game of the season for Arsenal because Wenger wants to give Ospina game play time. Nothing against Ospina he decent keeper but if he is better then Cech then why is he not playing in the League games ahead of Cech. Wenger being too loyal to players has cost Arsenal over the years and will continue to until their is a change.

:ksi
Arsenal wins their group only to draw Bayern and lose 5-1, must be so frustrating for them.
Now the 4th place league trophy awaits them.

one world class central defender, one world class striker, that's it. Not an Arsenal fan, but I think If they fill those two spots they will be truly title contenders.

They need a holding midfielder.

Someone like Matic, Busquets, Schweinsteiger etc.

Not sure who is good right now in that role and available in the transfer market but that should add some steel to their midfield.

Not an Arsenal fan but the problem is the rubbish players brought by Wenger. I'm a Man United fan so I grew up with Arsenal as our main title rivals. That Arsenal of old had great players like Adams, Campbell, Vierra, Ljunberg, Pieres, Gilberto, Henry, Bergekamp, Petit. Now you have bang average players like Ramsey, Gibbs, Walcott, Giroud, Oxlade, Coquelain, Xhaka, pseudo world class players like Ozil. Wenger has failed to build a great team after the Invincibles. He has shown loyalty to a lot of these average players and if Arsenal are to progress as a team, he has to leave. But of course I hope that he stays for the LOLs.

Bro The_KING and Rayyman aren't Arsenal fans. The former is a Man. U. fan while I am a Chelsea fan.

midfield is alright i guess, CB and ST is needed, world class ones, it'll be hard to convince someone though because they don't win any major trophies, gotta try and pay more, get someone like Godin or Chiellini, and Auba or Higuain type superb finisher

Whilst some are rubbish - others have just fallen spectacularly be their high standards e.g. Ozil who is no longer the talented youngster who he was at RM, Cech etc. and others who are highly inconsistent and injury prone e.g. Walcott, Wilshere and Cazorla. They severely lack a world class holding midfielder and a top striker.

Wenger's tactics do not help much either at times...

did you enjoy last season?
:ghalib

I stopped watching after a couple of months. Then I just looked at the scores. I was hoping for a Top 5 finish this year and we are well on our way to accomplishing that. The Arsenal defeat got me sad, but it made the recent revenge even sweeter.

start celebrating Chelsea already won the league, no one can catch up to them now
:ksi

yesterdays result was funny more than anything else.
bayern have nt been playing like that recently and i actually had foolex myself into thinking arsenal had a chance.

lol

Another gutless and pathetic defeat last night, if wenger had any dignity left he would leave at end of the season.

Hasn't won the league for almost 13 years, hasn't even looked like winning the league for years. About to be knocked out of the CL at the round of 16 stage for the 7th successive year.....

How on earth have Wenger and the likes of Gazidis kept their jobs for so long?

Wenger leaving won't change much because the board will make sure his replacement is someone like Howe or the Dortmund manager or someone in that calibre. No disrespect to these managers but it will still be same old Arsenal fighting for top 4.

Arsenal need a major overhaul starting from the board to Wenger. The owner and board have no ambition and last 10 years or so show it. As long they making profit they happy with finishing top 4.

Arsenal board will never go for a big name as they know that kind of calibre of manager will be demanding in transfers and regarding wages of players.

I feel sorry for Arsenal fans even more then Villa, always look good and display potential only to falter spectacularly.
