so Arsene has said he will definitely be managing next season if not at Arsenal then somewhere else. This makes me think he will sign that new contract.
On the contrary, this tells me that he is definitely leaving this summer. He has never said something like this before, and has often given the impression that Arsenal will be his last job.
IMO, he has always wanted to retire here and would have done that last summer had we beaten Leicester to the league title. He has probably always wanted to sign off on a high, i.e. by winning the PL and the CL. After the stadium debt was paid-off in 2013 and we got into a position where we could spend 40 million on one player, he backed himself to win the league again and now that he hasn't been able to do so for 4 years and counting, he is starting to crack under pressure.
In addition, the fans continue to grow impatient with each passing season, including his loyalists who have always defended him. He has a thick skin and tremendous capacity to withstand criticism, but all these 'Wenger Out' banners and chants after every big defeat has clearly started to take its toll. For the first time in years, I have had this feeling that he has finally accepted/realized that he cannot take this team any further.
However, at the end of the day, he will like to retire on a personal high and prove that he can still win titles even if not at Arsenal. He is too much of a football romantic to be swayed by the Chinese money, but if the likes of Barca (very possible with Enrique leaving this summer), Bayern or PSG etc. move for him this summer, he will be tempted. France is also an option, but I don't think it can happen before 2018.
Personally, I wouldn't mind to see him go to Barca or Bayern and win the Champions League. I have grown to dislike him over the last few years, but I can't forget the good he has done for this club. Seeing him win the Champions League with Barca/Bayern/PSG would be similar to seeing Henry lift the Champions League with Barca, something which he deserved to do given his status as one of the greatest strikers of all time.
Wenger is also one of the greatest managers of all time irrespective of the failures in the last few years, and winning the Champions League will cement his legacy. It looks bleak but it can happen. More important concern though is his replacement. No more 'yes man' and coaches with small club mentality.
Arsenal need a winner who will be ready to compete with Conte, Mourinho, Pep, Klopp, Pochettino etc. within a year. Allegri and Simeone are on top of my wishlist. Both earn half of what Wenger earns at Arsenal, and both need a fresh challenge. If Arsenal offers them the same salary as Wenger along with good enough funds, they will crawl to London. The opportunity to work for a stable club in the most high-profile league in the world with the most high-profile managers in the game is too big for them to turn down.
