Virgil van Dijk will reportedly become the highest-paid player in Liverpool's history with a new £220,000-a-week deal.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is asked if a lack of preparation time in recent weeks will impact the intensity of Sunday's Merseyside derby.

He tells BBC Radio Merseyside: "I am an experienced manager but don't have much experience with games behind closed doors. When I saw the first two games in the Premier League they looked in good shape, the intensity level was good.

"I watched a lot of Bundesliga and in the beginning the intensity was there. Then it became tricky for teams because of the number of games in a short period. That is the challenge for all of us.

"How that will influence the intensity, I don't know. We won't go for excuses. It will be 100% tough for all of us."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he would prefer to play their game away to Manchester City at City's home ground, rather than a neutral venue.

A decision on the 2 July Premier League match at Etihad Stadium will be made at a meeting of Manchester City Council's safety advisory group on Thursday.

Police requested five games be played at neutral venues over safety concerns.

"I would prefer it is at Manchester, otherwise it would be really difficult to organise it," Klopp said.

"I don't know how it would be, but it would not be in Liverpool so it would mean we both have to go somewhere where we both need a hotel."

Liverpool, who need five points to clinch their first league title in 30 years, face Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

City are second in the table, 20 points behind Liverpool. They travel to Chelsea on Thursday.

Other matches assigned to neutral venues included the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton, but that was deemed safe to go ahead at Goodison Park following talks between the government, police and the Premier League.

Klopp said: "The whole period we are in has shown that the massive majority of people really behaved responsibly and seriously and take this situation as it is."

Mohamed Salah believes now is the right time for Liverpool to end their 30-year wait for a top-flight English title.

Salah scored as the Reds beat Crystal Palace 4-0 on Wednesday - a result that leaves them two points away from winning the Premier League.

They could seal their victory on Thursday if Manchester City - the side that pipped them to last season's title - fail to win at Chelsea.

"Two points to go to win the league, it's great," Salah told Sky Sports.

"Since I came here I said I want to win the Premier League. The city did not win it for a long time.

"Last year we had a chance but Man City also played really well and deserved it. It's our time to win the league."

Liverpool's last top-flight league title, their 18th, came in 1989-90, when Sir Kenny Dalglish led them to victory.

Since then the closest they have come is last season, when Jurgen Klopp's side amassed a remarkable 97 points but were beaten by a single point by Pep Guardiola's City.

This season, the Reds have been unrivalled in their brilliance, with only football's three-month suspension in England because of the coronavirus pandemic delaying their league triumph.

Having drawn at Everton in their first game back and now beating Palace, Klopp's side are on the brink of victory.

"Tonight was a big step, that's clear," Klopp told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We've all still got to play seven games, if we play like this it's really not nice to play against us.

"I have to watch the game tomorrow because we play them one week later. That's being professional and doing my job."

Liverpool completely outclassed Palace on Wednesday, scoring four times but also spurning numerous opportunities to add more goals.

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the opener from a free-kick before Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane added the others.

"It was a brilliant game," added Klopp. "If you are involved in this, if you are as close as I am to these boys, then you can't be happier than I am.

"The way they played, the passion we showed was so exceptional, there were moments that I couldn't believe it. Especially after being 4-0 up and still showing it.

"I'm so happy that we showed that we do it for the people even when they're not really here. In this moment I am in a really good mood."

FWA awards aren't that memorable. Sterling won it last year and pretty much was forgotten. I hope Hendo wins the PFA award. It's between him and KDB. On a neutral basis, I think KDB was the better player but as a Liverpool supporter, I want Hendo to win. His leadership on the pitch was extremely vital to win the PL.
