Eddie Nketiah again impressed with a double in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Charlotte in the International Champions Cup.

The 20-year-old added to his strike against Bayern Munich with goals either side of half-time at the Bank of America Stadium, although Arsenal had things far from their own way for much of the game against their Serie A opponents.

Nketiah first showed his increasing confidence as he dragged back Sead Kolasinac's low cross away from a defender before slotting in the opener, while his second was a tap-in from an Alexandre Lacazette lay-off.

Fiorentina had numerous chances in either half and with some better finishing would have punished Arsenal's often naive defending, but the Gunners instead added a third late on with Joe Willock's fine finish high into the net and kept up their 100 per cent record in the cup.

It was new season, same old Arsenal in North Carolina as the Gunners often strung flowing attacking moves together while looking uncertain defensively.

Most of the experience in the team Unai Emery named came in the club's back five - but the old heads were outshone by their young counterparts at the other end of the pitch.

The tone was set inside 90 seconds when the otherwise impressive Nacho Monreal presented the ball to Dusan Vlahovic, who paced through before a last-ditch Shkodran Mustafi block denied him the perfect start.

Player ratings

Arsenal: Martinez (7), Chambers (5), Mustafi (5), Monreal (6), Jenkinson (6), Burton (5), Olayinka (6), Kolasinac (7), Nelson (6), Nketiah (8), Saka (7).

Fiorentina: Dragowski (6), Venuti (5), Ceccherini (6), Ranieri (7), Terzic (6), Castrovilli (5), Cristoforo (6), Benassi (6), Sottil (7), Vlahovic (6), Saponara (6).

They were given a bigger let-off when the back three of Mustafi, Monreal and Calum Chambers allowed Riccardo Saponara a free header from a cross, but he nodded wide moments before Vlahovic forced Emiliano Martinez into the first save of the game from another Mustafi error.

At the other end, Arsenal had been building up some nice momentum and took the lead through the again impressive Nketiah, who netted with a smart finish. With left-back Aleksa Terzic blocking his path, he dragged Kolasinac's low cross back to create space for himself to smash the ball beyond Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Marco Benassi wasted another chance for a Fiorentina side who scored only once in the last seven games of last season when he was played clean through but scuffed his effort, before Nketiah turned from striker to defender to clear Federico Ceccherini's header off the line.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Fiorentina wasted their best chance of the game, when Saponara bamboozled Mustafi to find Vlahovic's run into the box, but he toe-poked wide from an excellent position.

After a pair of changes from either side at the break, Benassi again could have levelled but pulled a strong save out of Bernd Leno with a stinging near-post effort, before Arsenal doubled their lead amid controversial circumstances.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan headed from midfield to the right flank with the ball but, in the process, Carl Jenkinson clearly blocked off left-back Terzic while the Armenian midfielder squared for Lacazette to tee up Nketiah again.

The defender directed his ire at the assistant referee but the goal stood, and Arsenal added a third late on when Willock, who had already made a wonderful 40-yard run from his own half, ran ahead of Lacazette into the box before being found by the French striker. An excellent first touch set himself up to fire in and seal victory.

Things could have been even sweeter in added time had fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal's only summer signing to date, capped an explosive run of his own from the half-way line with a goal, but he shot just wide of the far post.

Unai Emery insists he is remaining patient as he bids to add up to four players to his Arsenal squad this summer.

Despite ending last season empty-handed and missing out on Champions League qualification for the third successive season, the Gunners have only signed 18-year-old winger Gabriel Martinelli during this window.

However, Sky Sports News understands they have agreed a deal to sign teenage defender William Saliba from Saint-Etienne and are waiting for Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane to approve a loan deal for midfielder Dani Ceballos.

Arsenal have also seen both a £25m bid for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney and a £40m offer for Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha rejected, but Emery says he is calm as the August 8 deadline edges closer.

"Really I am with patience because we want to choose the best solution," he said. "Some players are very expensive and we are waiting for this possibility.

"We don't want now to go to the second line of players. We are waiting. We have very good players. We have very good young players. We are aware also that we need to improve some players in this squad.

"I want to sign one, two, three or four players only if we can be sure they are coming to improve our team."

Emery was speaking after Arsenal beat Fiorentina 3-0 in the International Champions Cup on Saturday night to record their third consecutive win in pre-season.

He says he is working closely with new sporting director Edu and head of football Raul Sanllehi as they look to make new signings.

"There are a lot of names. The club is working, Edu is very close to me and Raul. We speak every day," Emery said.

One player who looks set to remain at The Emirates next season is Eddie Nketiah, who scored twice against the Italians in Charlotte.

"Nketiah was playing very well last year," Emery said of the 20-year-old striker.

Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign Real Madrid and Spain midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan for the 2019-20 campaign.

Ceballos, 22, has made 56 appearances for Real Madrid since joining in 2017 but has persistently been linked with Arsenal and Tottenham this summer.

The former Real Betis player is expected to fill the void left by Aaron Ramsey, following his move to Juventus.

Arsenal are also set to sign Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba, 18.

The France youth international will cost around £27m and will return to Saint-Etienne on loan next season before joining up with the Gunners in 2020.

Saliba has expressed a desire to join Arsenal despite late interest from Tottenham.

Arsenal players Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac were targeted, the club confirmed, but both escaped uninjured.

Footage on social media appears to show Kolasinac chasing the robbers in Platts Lane, near Golders Green, at about 17:00 BST.

Arsenal said in a statement: "We have been in contact with both players and they are fine."

In a video that has circulated on social media, full-back Kolasinac is seen fighting off two men who are wielding knives.

The player can be seen jumping out of a vehicle to confront the masked men who had pulled alongside the car on mopeds.

In the footage, both car jackers were seen to be armed and were filmed brandishing knives at 26-year-old Kolasinac.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "It was reported that suspects on motorbikes had attempted to rob a man who was driving a car.

"The driver, along with his passenger, managed to get away unharmed and travelled to a restaurant in Golders Green, where they were spoken to by officers."

There have been no arrests so far.

Kolasinac and midfielder Ozil are not the first footballers to be targeted on London's roads.

In 2016, then West Ham striker Andy Carroll was threatened at gunpoint on his way home from training .

Shocking. London seems to have massive knife problem. Glad that players are safe.

Arsenal are confident of signing Nicolas Pepe from Lille after agreeing a £72m fee for the winger, according to Sky in Italy.

Lille president Gerard Lopez confirmed on Friday that Napoli had agreed a deal for the 24-year-old winger, but Arsenal appear to have trumped the Italian side by offering superior terms.

Napoli were willing to pay Pepe £3.6m per year, but with the Ivory Coast international seeking a £4.5m annual salary, Arsenal have made a stronger offer.

Lopez said on Friday: "We received offers that satisfy us economically from four big clubs. Napoli is one of these and has satisfied our request of 80 million. Now it will be up to the player to decide where to go, also based on the proposals that his agents received from the four companies."

Arsenal's focus had been on signing Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha for a similar fee, but Lille's willingness to receive a lower fee upfront with the rest in instalments makes a move for Pepe more financially viable.

This could clear a path for Everton to get Zaha this summer. Sky Sports News understands the Merseyside club are in talks with Palace and set to bid £60m for the Ivory Coast international.

It is understood the Toffees are also willing to include a player in any potential deal with Palace for Zaha, who is keen to test himself at a new club after four-and-a-half years at Selhurst Park.

A deal for Pepe would eclipse the club-record £60m Arsenal paid for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2018.

Along with Arsenal, Manchester United have also been linked with Pepe, who scored 22 goals and contributed 11 assists in Ligue 1 last season.

"Pepe will return from his holidays on Monday and I think that he will make his mind up halfway through the week," Lopez added.

Arsenal are hopeful of confirming the £72m club record signing of Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe from Lille later this week.

The 24-year-old has arrived in London and will have a medical on Tuesday before signing a five-year contract.

The Gunners are also in talks with a number of clubs over the possible departure of 27-year-old defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The German, who is under contract until 2021, wants to stay and prove himself.

How a chocolate bar nearly derailed Pepe's career
Arsenal are keen to find an agreement for a loan or permanent transfer for Mustafi.

Another centre-back possibly heading out of the Emirates is 33-year-old Frenchman Laurent Koscielny, with talks continuing to resolve his future.

Last season's captain is training with the under-23s and facing disciplinary proceedings after refusing to travel on Arsenal's pre-season tour to the United States.

Koscielny has a year left on his contract and wants to be released on a free transfer, but Gunners boss Unai Emery saw the defender as part of his plans for the coming season and will only let him leave for a suitable fee.

Koscielny does not anticipate playing for Arsenal again and negotiations with interested parties are ongoing.

Arsenal technical director Edu met with the Stade Rennes president Olivier Letang and Koscielny's representative Stephane Courbis in London on Monday.

The club is looking to bolster in central defence before the transfer deadline on 8 August and also retain interest in Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.

Nicolas Pepe: Arsenal sign Lille winger for club record fee

Arsenal have signed Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe from Lille for a club record fee of £72m.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Emirates Stadium after having a medical on Tuesday.

Pepe scored 35 goals in 74 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille, who he joined from Angers in 2017.

"Being here is very emotional," said Pepe. "I have come a long way and struggled a lot and so signing for this great club is a big reward."

He becomes the fourth most expensive signing in Premier League history after Manchester United duo Paul Pogba (£89m) and Romelu Lukaku (£75m), and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk (£75m).

Pepe added: "It was important to make the right decision and I am convinced that Arsenal is the right choice."

During the 2018-19 Ligue 1 season, only Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappe had more combined goals and assists than Pepe, who will wear the number 19 shirt for Arsenal.

"Nicolas is a highly rated and talented winger who was wanted by many of the top teams in Europe," said Gunners boss Unai Emery.

"Signing a top-class winger has been one of our key objectives in this transfer window and I'm delighted he's joining.

"He will add pace, power and creativity, with the aim of bringing more goals to our team."

Mass turnover at Lille?

Pepe was the second player to be confirmed as leaving Lille on Thursday, with Portugal Under-21 forward Rafael Leao joining AC Milan earlier in the day for £27m.

It means Lille have now sold £135m worth of players during the current transfer window, with Thiago Mendes and Youssouf Kone joining Lyon for £19.8m and £8.1m respectively and Anwar El Ghazi making his loan deal at Aston Villa permanent in an £8.1m deal.

In comparison, they have spent £42.4m on bringing players in this summer, with Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen's move from Belgian side RSC Charleroi their biggest expenditure at £10.8m.

Lille finished second in Ligue 1 last season, 16 points behind champions PSG.

GOAL - Barcelona 0-1 Arsenal

Messi on holiday after Copa America commitments
Barca XI: Neto, Semedo, Pique, Rakitic, Dembele, Griezmann, Alba, De Jong, Umtiti, Perez, Pui
Arsenal XI: Leno, Maitland-Niles, Chambers, Sokratis, Monreal, Willock, Xhaka, Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Nelson, Aubameyang

Barcelona 2-1 Arsenal: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scores in friendly defeat

An excellent late goal from Luis Suarez gave Barcelona a 2-1 friendly win over Arsenal at a packed Nou Camp.

In their final pre-season game, Arsenal named a fairly strong starting XI and led at half-time through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's fine individual strike.

But Barca were dominant after the break and levelled through Ainsley Maitland-Niles' calamitous own goal.

Former Liverpool man Suarez then came off the bench to score a clinical late volley for the La Liga champions.

Lionel Messi was an unused substitute but a crowd of 98,812 did get their first glimpse of £107m signing Antoine Griezmann.

The Frenchman was fairly quiet, his best moment coming with a disallowed goal for offside after an excellent pass from Ivan Rakitic.

Arsenal - without record signing Nicolas Pepe - counter-attacked well in the first half and Aubameyang put them ahead with a brilliant turn and finish from 16 yards, shrugging off Jordi Alba to lash into the top corner.

That shocked the home crowd, and after half-time Barcelona were completely on top. Bernd Leno saved well from Ousmane Dembele twice before Maitland-Niles passed beyond him without looking for an own goal.

Seventeen-year-old Bukayo Saka looked lively for the Gunners as a late sub but Suarez prevented a penalty shootout when he ran onto Sergi Roberto's lofted through ball to drive a volley past Leno.

Arsenal face Newcastle in their Premier League opener next Sunday.

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sell defender Laurent Koscielny to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux for a fee of up to 5m euros (£4.6m).

The 33-year-old centre-back is having a medical on Tuesday before completing a return to France after nine years with the Premier League club.

Frenchman Koscielny had a year left on his contract at Emirates Stadium and the Gunners wanted him to stay.

But he asked for a free transfer and refused to travel on a pre-season tour.

Former France international Koscielny rejected a new contract that he felt undervalued his contribution and continued ability.

Arsenal began disciplinary proceedings and instructed the captain to train with the under-23s, but offered him a way back into the first-team squad for the new season.

However, Koscielny had no intention of reversing his decision and was determined to secure a move to his home country.

As well as the medical, personal terms with Bordeaux still need to be finalised.

Talks also took place with Bordeaux's Ligue 1 rivals Rennes.

Arsenal hope to sign a new centre-back before the Premier League's transfer deadline at 17:00 BST on Thursday, while they retain an interest in Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney despite the 22-year-old Scotland international being injured.

The Gunners are also in advanced talks over the sale of English right-back Carl Jenkinson, 27, to Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Laurent Koscielny: Arsenal legend Ian Wright calls defender 'disrespectful'

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has described former Gunners captain Laurent Koscielny as "disrespectful" for the nature of his social media video unveiling at Bordeaux.

In the clip, Koscielny, who left Emirates Stadium after nine years on Tuesday, pulls off an Arsenal shirt to reveal his new team's top underneath.

The 33-year-old defender refused to travel on Arsenal's pre-season tour and made it clear he wanted to leave.

Wright said Koscielny's actions "hurt".

Directly addressing former France centre-back Koscielny, ex-England striker Wright posted on social media: "You should be ashamed for the way you've left the club after nine years.

"Got what you wanted and still trying to have a dig. Hope it's worth it in the long run."

Koscielny has later posted a statement on Instagram explaining his decision to join Ligue 1 Bordeaux in a £4.6m deal.

He describes his return to his homeland as a "turning point" in his life "as a player, man and family man".

"My decision to leave has been discussed for months with my club, my team-mates, my coach.

"However, I hope you can understand, and in any case I cannot be thankful enough for these years past at Arsenal.

"I am aware of everything that the club and you supporters have brought to me. But it is time for me to go home so today my will is to join the Bordeaux."

From Arsenal fans and journalists to former players and celebrity supporters, plenty of people have been airing their thoughts on Koscielny's move on social media.

Former Gunners forward Eniola Aluko posted her agreement with Wright, while comedian Jack Whitehall - an Arsenal fan - tweeted his own witty response...

Arsenal have agreed an £8m deal with Chelsea to sign defender David Luiz on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old Brazil international, signed a new two-year Chelsea deal in May, will have a medical at Arsenal on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Arsenal sold defender Laurent Koscielny to French side Bordeaux for a fee of up to 5m euros (£4.6m).

They are also set to sign Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney for £25m.

Luiz has spent six and a half years at Chelsea during two spells.

Alex Iwobi: Arsenal to sell striker to Everton in deal worth up to £40m

Everton have agreed to sign forward Alex Iwobi from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £40m.

Iwobi came through the ranks at the Gunners, playing 149 times and scoring 15 goals.

The Nigeria forward is Marco Silva's seventh summer signing.

Iwobi will join fellow new arrivals goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, defender Djibril Sidibe, midfielders Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, and striker Moise Kean.

Everton had an initial bid of £30m turned down but their improved offer has been accepted by Arsenal.

The player is undergoing a medical in London, but a dealsheet was submitted by the 5pm deadline and the transfer should be completed without a problem by the extended cut-off time of 7pm.

Iwobi featured regularly last season under manager Unai Emery, appearing in all but three Premier League games, and he scored in the Europa League final defeat by Chelsea in what was his last appearance for the club.

There is increased competition in Iwobi's position at Arsenal following the arrival of Nicolas Pepe from Lille this summer for a club record £72m.

Iwobi now begins a new chapter of his career at Everton, as the Toffees target an improvement on last season's eighth place finish.

In an attempt to do that, Silva has reshaped his squad over the summer with seven arrivals and nine permanent departures.

A very good window thanks to Raul. He has worked wonders with a small budget, and selling Iwobi for £40 million was a master stroke.

Arsenal now are well-placed to push for the 4th spot this season. It would be very disappointing if Chelsea still manages to finish above them.

I'm glad Iwobi has gone, his finishing and end product was very mediocre. Not good enough for a club with aspirations of returning to the top 4.

However, let's not get carried away with the signings they've made:

03.jpg

David Luiz - loose cannon and can be a big liability as he seems to take excessive amounts of risk with his flamboyant style of play from the back. He was largely to blame for Brazil's humiliating 7-1 defeat, so I'm far from excited with his arrival, but I guess he might be an upgrade to Mustafi or perhaps provide the additional cover at the back, now that Koscielney has left (good riddance as well).

Tierney - heard good things about him, hope his arrival is for the greater good of the club.

Pepe - good signing but we overpaid by £20m+

Ceballos - haven't seen him play but if he's from Real Madrid, he has to have ability. Hopefully he delivers at Arsenal and recovers from injury soon.

Saliba - not arriving till next season, as he'll be staying on loan at his current club for the time being.

Martinelli - 18 years old, doubt he will feature much in the first team, it at all!

We should finish above Chelsea, however not sure we are well-placed to finish 4th just yet. We are still a couple of defenders short and Leno didn't perform too well last season. Defensively, we're still vulnerable. In other words from the signings made we've haven't added much to the first XI.

As a Gooner I have to agree with this.
Whilst i’m not discounting a top four finish (or even a win) because anything can happen after Leicester, I think we are where Liverpool were two seasons ago... great front three with a creative midfield and a poor back line, meaning lots of goals scored and conceded...

Although our back line now has more potential but still one or two signings short for me. That could change in January so i’m hopeful.,

Really we should have sealed top 4 last season... just needed one more victory against lower sides and I think we’re stronger this season.

PL strikers will be licking their lips facing Mustafi and Luiz because both will have shocking days, this is as certain as the sun coming up. At their best they can do well but up against the top forwards is a different story.

I find it crazy Arsenal have no money to spend while it's owner is throwing it away in America.

I think Mustafi is history now.
May get a few League Cup games until The January Window, but surely his time is up.

Luiz was a no brainier, he was cheap.. Emrey must have seen something in him at PSG.

Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac are not in Arsenal's squad for Sunday's Premier League game at Newcastle because of "further security incidents".

The pair were involved in a carjacking attempt by an armed gang in north-west London a fortnight ago.

Arsenal say they are liaising with police and "providing the players and their families with ongoing support".

"The welfare of our players and their families is always a top priority," the club added.

"We have taken this decision following discussion with the players and their representatives.

"We look forward to welcoming the players back to the squad as soon as possible."

Ozil and Kolasinac were left out of a friendly against Lyon following the attempted carjacking, but both featured in the final pre-season game against Barcelona on Sunday.

The latest incidents are being investigated by police.

After the failed carjacking attempt, Kolasinac posted a picture of himself and Ozil on social media and added: "Think we're fine."

Mustafi wont be starting. He will probably he sold.

David Luiz has played in a team that has won the champions league and Premier league. He is far from perfect but he is not the clown you are making him out to be.

I think you are overly cynical.

Pepe is one of the hottest young wingers in Europe. Yes £70m is big money, but you cannot complain about his price tag when you managed to recoup £40m for Iwobi.

Besides, they have only played £20m upfront and the rest will be paid in installments over 5 years. It is an absolute bargain.

R. Nelson is also a very exciting young player with a considerably higher ceiling than Iwobi. These two additions will improve Arsenal’s wing play massively.

David Luiz is no Van Dijk but he is better than all existing options at Arsenal except for Holding. At only £8m at a 2 year contract, he is not much of a risk and I think Arsenal will sign a big money CB next season with Saliba coming in as well.

Also, Tierney is considerably better than Kolasinac and the aging Monreal.

Ceballos is an excellent replacement for Ramsey. He is one of the best midfielders in Europe in his age group but he froze in Madrid because of Modric, Kroos and Isco. At Arsenal, he will get a prominent role and hopefully showcase his ability.

All in all, arsenal have greatly improved their wide options, the midfield is pretty much the same (Ramsey out, Ceballos in) while the defense has improved marginally.

Considering how Chelsea are much weaker this season and Man United have failed to improve their midfield and attack, Arsenal have an excellent opportunity of breaking into the top four.

Finally, I am surprised at your evaluation of Leno. Sure he made a few mistakes, but he was largely solid and saved Arsenal in numerous games. He is a very good keeper and hopefully he will only get better from here on.

Arsenal are still 2-3 windows away from challenging for the title, but with Raul taking charge of transfers instead of that bald hack Gazidis, the future looks bright in my view.

I might sound harsh, however with Unai Emery's lack of emphasis on defence, it shows he is very much a younger version of Arsene Wenger.

I appreciate we are buying Pepe by installments, however the priorities should have been to bolster the defence significantly, instead of the £70m splashed out on this winger.

I always say the foundation to a good football team is to build from the back i.e. goalkeeper and defence, and I'm just sick and tired of this team (under Wenger and now Emery), prioritising their targets on attackers and midfielders, when our shortfalls are in defence and is the reason why we have failed to finish in the top four in consecutive seasons.

David Luiz at 32 is hardly an upgrade, for me this signing gives me the vibes of Liechtensteiner. Many of the fans felt he was a good addition but as evident from last season, he was well past it, even as a squad player.

Tierney is a good signing and I also agree with your view on Pepe as a footballer, as he looks like a fine player.

I've just seen some footage from Dani Ceballos and I am a lot more optimistic with him now in the side with his shooting ability (from range), dribbling and proficient free kicks. If he's the one of the best midfielders in Europe, this could be a masterstroke from Arsenal.

Leno has had some good games for Arsenal but my biggest concern with him there have been shots hit against him which he should be catching more often, but ends up spilling or punching these balls when they should be taken. He blew hot and cold last season.

I'm glad Gazidis has gone because he was out of his depth in the role and we have taken a step forward with Raul Sanllehi, but I am still far from satisfied as we needed more defensive reinforcements.

Last season I only went to one Arsenal match. If I see a clear improvement, then I might be spending most of my weekends back at the Emirates.

With Arsenal’s budget, it wasn’t easy to sign a top defender. Most clubs are not willing to accept payments in installments. Arsenal got lucky with the Pepe deal because he was well out of their budget.

That is why they had to settle for a stop-gap option like David Luiz and Saliba. I am sure the priority next summer would to buy a £40m+ defender.

I hope my fears are indeed misplaced, however lets hope for the best. A good result yesterday with a depleted team.

To solve all of Arsenal problems will take more than 1 window. This was a good start.

Really refreshing to see Hale Academy being mentioned in the modern game of football.

Willock and Nelson both started v Newcastle. Willock looked the better player but think Nelson could be a good squad option and a start in Euros/Cup games. Really looking forward to Saka though, a proper winger.

A good window for Arsenal - I expect Pepe to settle in slowly as he is a late bloomer; so we must be patient.

Sanllehi has done a better job than Gazidis has ever done in his tenure. Need to get rid of Elneny and Mustafi than this transfer window will go from good to very good.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery is "100%" confident Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac are mentally ready to play against Burnley on Saturday.

The pair were left out of the Gunners' season-opening win over Newcastle because of "further security fears" after being involved in a carjacking attempt by an armed gang in July.

Midfielder Ozil and left-back Kolasinac have returned to training.

Two men have since been charged with a public order offence.

Arsenal pulled Ozil, 30, and 25-year-old Kolasinac from the away game at St James' Park because of "further security incidents".

"The welfare of our players and their families is always a top priority," the club said at the time.

"We have taken this decision following discussion with the players and their representatives."

In his pre-match news conference, Emery said former Germany player Ozil and Bosnia-Herzegovina international Kolasinac's "mentality is focused on us, for training and the match".

He said: "My focus is to be positive and think the players are 100 per cent with their mind here. I want to help them be normal with us, training, thinking and above all taking the focus for each match."

Emery said his only "focus and direction" is Saturday's game when asked if former World Cup winner Ozil will start amid interest from MLS side DC United.

Ferhat Ercan, of Highgate, and Salaman Ekinci, of Tottenham, were arrested on 8 August outside the north London home of Ozil, and have since been charged.

Mr Ercan and Mr Ekinci, both 27, are due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on 6 September.

Police said they were treating the public order offence and the attempted car-jacking as separate incidents.

Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac 'caught up in gangland turf war'

Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac have been caught up in a gangland turf war after they were targeted in a robbery, a gang expert has said.

The players were targeted last month as Ozil drove his black Mercedes in north London.

His car was boxed in by two attackers on a moped wearing helmets and brandishing knives.

The players were unhurt during the attack in Golders Green, north London, on 25 July.

The attack, which was filmed on a mobile phone, shows Kolasinac fighting back against the muggers.

But his bravery may have unwittingly placed the two footballers at the centre of a gangland turf war with criminals threatening to "rob everything" the pair have.

The attack has put the security of highly paid footballers in the spotlight.

Gang expert Wensley Clarkson told Sky News he believes Ozil and Kolasinac are now pawns in a battle between old-style gangsters and more vicious newcomers.

He said: "These two footballers have found themselves caught up between two gangs of criminals.

"I believe one of them is old school, Turkish, who've been in north London for many, many years and the others are eastern European who've swooped into Britain in the last 10 years, and they're basically... it's a turf war in a sense and the footballers have become their territory.

"And this is a classic example of what's been happening elsewhere in Britain in the last 10 years.

"But the difference is the new gangsters are much more, chilling, much more deadly than the old ones. And they don't care about collateral damage and in a sense these footballers are collateral damage."

However, Mr Clarkson said he did not think the Arsenal stars should have police protection.

"I don't necessarily accept the criticism of the police that seems to be saying that they should be offering full-time protection to these players. Number one, and some won't like me saying this, they're very rich so really and honestly the cost of security for a month or two is really such a small amount of more to them.

"But more importantly, there is a feeling they allowed themselves to be manipulated to a certain degree and this is the result of that.

"Obviously the original mugging was nothing to do with that...that was a random crime in which one of the footballers hit back and sort of humiliated the gang involved.

"That then brought in the old school gang to add the 'protection' and here we are with a really classic situation.

"In some ways it's no different to the Krays 'protecting' celebrities 50 years ago - even when they're not wanted. And that's the key. These characters won't just go away."

Although Ozil and Kolasinac's situation is unusual, the threat to highly paid Premier League stars is very real.

Security for footballers is a burgeoning industry as players are now buying specially trained dogs costing between £30,000 and £100,000 to keep them safe.

Manchester United star Paul Pogba is just one who has bought a family protection dog.

Richard Douglas, director of Chaperone K9, a company that trains and supplies such dogs says the number of footballers buying them has increased.

He said: "Twenty or 30 years ago this was not the case. But now it is a lot easier to see the lives of players through social media. Players have got much more than they did - bigger homes, sports cars etc and people can be quite jealous of this."

Footballers have been targeted by criminals before - Steven Gerrard's wife Alex, as well as the couple's children, were threatened by a gang in their home in Formby, Merseyside, in 2010.

Wayne Rooney's house in Prestbury, Cheshire, was broken into while he was playing in his own testimonial in August 2016.

But Mr Clarkson said the situation had now become much more ugly because of the involvement of gangs. For Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac there may be no quick fix.

"What really has to happen for them to feel safe again is for these gangs to walk away and leave them alone - the irony is that then one of them has to win - at the moment I can't see any change in this.

"But these guys don't play by the rules of engagement."

David Luiz said he left Chelsea to join Arsenal because of his "ambition" and to experience a "new challenge".

The 32-year-old centre-half made his Gunners debut in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League home win over Burnley after his move on transfer deadline day.

Chelsea, who beat Arsenal in the Europa League final, came third in the league last season with Arsenal fifth.

"I am a guy with ambition and that is why I moved. I like a new a challenge and new things in my life," said Luiz.

"This is what gives me oxygen and gives me motivation and also to really enjoy this moment.

"I could have chosen a comfortable zone and got money and be cool and that is it."

New Chelsea manager Frank Lampard told Luiz he would not be a guaranteed regular starter in his team and then allowed the Brazil international, who won six major honours in two spells at the club, to move across London to Emirates Stadium.

Luiz is expected to become a big part of Gunners' boss Unai Emery's plans and played alongside Sokratis Papastathopoulos as Arsenal gained their second win from two games this season.

"Everyone knows I was so happy at Chelsea and won many trophies there," added Luiz. "I had a real honest conversation with Lamps, and Lamps had different ideas for his plans for the year.

"So the best way for me to respect the club where I can was to move on, try a new challenge and give him the opportunity to do his job.

"My philosophy on life is to be positive and to be a dreamer. I have my health, I can dream and we [Arsenal] can fight for something big."

A good start to the season so far by the team and especially the new signings, but the next two games vs Liverpool (A) and Spurs (H) will be the real indicator of how the season will go.

Dani Ceballos looks like a really good player.

Yes that was my impression too.
I brilliant debut with two assists and so good on the ball.

I hope we have a buyout clause in his loan deal because this guy has real potential.

Arsenal director Josh Kroenke has revealed conceding four goals in the second half of the Europa League final transformed the Gunners' approach to recruitment this summer and praised club staff for "working their magic" in the transfer market.

The Gunners lost 4-1 to Chelsea in Azerbaijan in May, consigning them to a third consecutive season outside the Champions League and limiting their spending power.

But speaking to BBC Sport, Kroenke said the disappointment of Baku was a turning point that led Arsenal to become one of the Premier League's biggest spenders this summer and raise expectations about their prospects for the campaign ahead.

"As the second half of the match unfolded, understanding the position we were in and some of the targets as we headed into the summer from a transfer standpoint, we had to rethink some of our strategy based on that last 45 minutes," said Kroenke.

The club, owned by Kroenke's billionaire father Stan, was criticised early in the summer by supporters' groups who called on directors to "reinvigorate" the Premier League side with a new approach to player transfers.

Speaking about the aftermath of the Europa League final and the change in transfer targets, Kroenke said: "We knew we wouldn't have Champions League football and that's what those type of talents are after. My main message to Vinai [Venkatesham, managing director] and Raul [Sanllehi, head of football] coming back from Baku on the plane and then throughout meetings all day the following day with them and Unai [Emery, head coach], was: 'Let's be aggressive and find out what's possible'.

"These guys went out into the market place and - through their contacts and our fantastic new team behind the scenes - were able to find some talented players who are really excited about playing for Arsenal Football Club.

"I think we had a very strong summer. We addressed certain areas on the pitch for this season and in the years ahead. We had certain age profiles that we were after. Without Champions League football we weren't exactly sure, but I encouraged our football operations department to be aggressive and when Arsenal Football Club knocks on a player's door it's a different knock.

"This summer, even though we weren't in a position of strength coming out of Baku, I think there were a few people caught off guard that Arsenal Football Club still has the aura that it does. We're excited to keep pushing that now and into the future."

It was understood that missing out on Champions League qualification would leave Arsenal with a transfer budget of roughly £45m in addition to any income they could generate.

Although the signings of Gabriel Martinelli, Dani Ceballos (loan), William Saliba, Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz cost well in excess of £100m, much of that outlay will be paid by way of instalments over the course of their contracts.

Meanwhile, money was recouped via the sales of Alex Iwobi, Krystian Bielik, Laurent Koscielny, David Ospina, Dominic Thompson, Xavier Amaechi and Carl Jenkinson, Eddie Nketiah's loan and sell-on clauses related to Ismael Bennacer and Jeff Reine-Adelaide.

When asked whether Arsenal adhered to their self-sustaining model or if finance was injected by their owners Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (KSE), of whom Josh Kroenke is deputy chairman to his father Stan, the 39-year-old said: "I'm not going to go into too much detail - people can read between the lines of being aggressive and what that might mean.

"It's going to be a private matter for us here at the club, but I hope our fans understand that by being aggressive that's exactly what we were.

"Going into the summer we knew we were going to have instruments in place that were going to allow us to be aggressive and they weren't going to be dependent on sales. The guys went out, worked their magic and I'm happy to have them on our side."

Reacting to fan pressure?
Kroenke said the protests from fans this summer was not the reason that the club spent more than £100m on players.

"I would say that if you're reacting and doing club record signings based on public opinion, you're not going to go very far as a club," he said. "We weren't reactive this summer, we were actually proactive.

"It was unfortunate that the summer unfolded publicly the way it did with some of the supporters groups. I tried to answer some of their concerns to the best of our ability.

"The transfer market is an evolving, living, breathing thing. We identified key targets, worked on those deals and over time we were able to execute them.

"That's hopefully a sign of encouragement for Arsenal fans that, when we're out in the market place, you might never know what we're thinking and you could be surprised by some of the names that come up.

"As for January, I don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We've got to evaluate some things in the short term and figure out where we might need to address going forward, so when January does roll around we're going to be proactive again."

When asked what his father's reaction had been, Kroenke added: "He is thrilled. As we've had a chance to get to know some of the new faces more and more behind the scenes and he's had a chance to be around them individually, he's excited.

"The hard part is staying patient and understanding that we're putting plans in place that are going to unfold over the next several years. We've done it with our North American teams and we're trying to implement those type of people and decision makers here at Arsenal. I think this summer is a great example of the quality of people that we have."

'Emery is exactly what we need'
Arsenal manager Emery succeeded Arsene Wenger on a three-year contract in May 2018 and is charged with improving on last season's fifth-place finish in the Premier League and being runners-up in the Europa League.

"I think he's doing a great job - has done a great job and is doing a great job," Kroenke said. "Turning the page from such a legendary manager and figure as Arsene - not only at Arsenal but in European football - was always going to be a difficult page to turn and as a club I think we've turned it as elegantly as we could.

"I think Unai's daily approach is fantastic. He's out there on the pitch, he's working, he's watching video, he's communicating and his daily energy and devotion to his work is fantastic - it's exactly what we need.

"Challenging for the Premier League title is always our goal, that's what we talk about constantly. Based on the strength of our league, which is the greatest in the world, if you're competing for the Premier League title, you're competing elsewhere for other silverware as well; whether that's the FA Cup, whether that's European silverware. We want to go for it all."

Arsenal have won their opening two Premier League games - away to Newcastle and at home against Burnley - but next up is a trip to Liverpool on Saturday and then the visit of Tottenham on 1 September. Could the Gunners materialise as unlikely contenders for the title?

"We're going to have our work cut out," Kroenke said. "There are some very strong teams ahead of us, starting with the defending champions [Manchester City] and the Champions League champions [Liverpool].

"We know what we need to do; we know there are squads ahead of us that are very strong. We've come back with a stronger squad than we finished with in May in Baku and I'm excited to see what this group can do because I think they've got a mentality, as well, that is... they're ready to get to work and they know what they need to do on behalf of all of us."

'We want to win the Premier League'
Kroenke said that despite finishing 28 points behind champions Manchester City last season, Arsenal are aiming to win the Premier League in the coming years.

The Gunners were top-flight champions five times between 1989 and 2004 but it is now more than 15 years since the 'Invincibles' delivered their last Premier League title.

"Our ambitions are the same as the fans. We want to win and we want to win as much and as often as possible. And doing it a fun way, where they're seeing some really entertaining football as well. I think we've got the group to do it," Kroenke said.

"We have the highest of ambitions. In North America, we are trying to win. The [Los Angeles] Rams were in the Super Bowl last year. I can only imagine what a Champions League final is like after being over in Baku.

"There are six great clubs in the Premier League and unfortunately only four [Champions League] spots that are guaranteed. The economics involved - to be able to reinvest back into the club, attract different players who only want Champions League football... our goal is to get back and to win the Premier League."

'Absolutely here to stay'
Stan Kroenke's Kroenke Sports and Entertainment began acquiring Arsenal shares in 2007 and gradually increased its influence over the subsequent decade, eventually taking full control a year ago when rival investor Alisher Usmanov agreed to sell his stake to the Americans.

Sections of the fanbase have been fiercely opposed to KSE and in particular Stan Kroenke, but his son insisted they are "absolutely, absolutely" here to stay and want to build relationships off the pitch for the good of the team on it.

Josh Kroenke said a galvanised Arsenal fanbase could "probably be the most powerful thing that I ever would have witnessed".

He added: "Passion can go a couple of different ways, but knowing the passion of the Arsenal supporter community, it would be an incredible sight to behold. Being here on matchdays, it gives me the chills even just thinking about it. But to know that the supporters were united behind our group would be a very powerful thing and I think this is a group they can really get behind.

"They need to understand who we are and what we're trying to accomplish. It's important for them to try and understand our personalities as people, because at the end of the day we're fans - we want to win and it makes our job a lot easier when we do.

"It's important for them to know how passionate we are. When I met with some of the fans' groups last season I told them that trust is earned over time and I would love for you to trust me now but unfortunately that trust has to play out over the next several years. We're just getting started and hopefully we'll start to earn more and more trust with the more and more work we put in.

"The Emirates is a place that is always going to be special to me and my family. I'm excited about being here, hopefully a long time."

Arsenal will wear their 2019-20 Adidas third kit for the first time vs. Liverpool this Saturday:

Let's hope the performance on Saturday is as good as the kit...

I didn’t like his interview one bit!
So it took one big loss in a final to change their transfer philosophy when for 15 years we were crying out for top players and money being spent? All those quarter finals, semi finals and final losses and it took just this one UEFA league final loss to change everything???
What must Wenger be feeling now?

Superb.

I also think David Luiz is a step-up from othee centre-halves they've had in recent seasons.

That's what they said about Leichsteiner as well (in comparison to Bellerin and etc), when we brought him in last season

You have misunderstood the context.

He clearly meant we had targets for being in the champions league, and targets for if we are not in the champions league. I believe Tierney and Pepe were targets for us being in the champions league and we still pulled them off. Maybe we would have signed someone rather loan Ceballos has we not been in the Europa league.

I am excited for the future. Not really interested in those who aren’t. I can see signs of progress.

I hope you can understand why I was critical of Emery and Arsenal transfer's business.

David Luiz (being the loose cannon that he is) has come up with usual blunders.

Yes it was a fine display from Liverpool but Emery's tactical performance left much to be desired. Why on Earth he decided to play that dreaded diamond formation is simply beyond me! It gave Liverpool's wingers the licence to expose our flanks in the defensive half.

I don't think we will finish 4th.

This is an overreaction. First, this is far from our full strength XI. Put holding, tierney and bellerin in that defence and it looks a whole lot different. If torreira was fully fit and up to speed, as he came back late from the copa america, our midfield would've been much more solid too. The only issue I had with the selection was Lacazette, I've not heard yet what Emery had to say about that but I think he definitely should've started.

Even still, I didn't see much wrong with the tactics by Emery. He tried to play a classic frustrating defensive performance with counter attacks. I do think we were too deep and defensive, but we still got a few very good chances on the break, with Pepe getting close a few times and of course missed that 1 on 1, through no fault of Emery's. We take our chances, and suddenly Emery's tactical perfomance isn't so bad anymore. That being said, mostly due to our personnel in my opinion, our defensive performance was very poor, but a full strength defence would've put in a much better performance. Torreira would have given us a lot more energy in midfield, which would've made defending those flanks a lot easier.

I'm not saying that a full strength XI would've gotten us out of Anfield with at least a point, but it would've been a much better performance. But even still, my second point is that our battle for top 4 is nothing to do with Liverpool. Any points at Liverpool or Man City would be a massive bonus. Our battle is with Spurs, United and Chelsea. These are the teams we need to be picking up points at. You think about a fully fit defence, a stronger midfield and hopefully an attack of Auba, Laca and Pepe, I think we're just as strong or stronger than our top 4 rivals. This was a disappointing defeat, but I still think it doesn't affect our top 4 chances, which I believe are strong.

Arsenal's scant consolation in losing to Liverpool is that they have got their annual visit to Anfield out of the way early - and this defeat was not quite as harrowing as some suffered in recent seasons.

The statistics after this 3-1 loss, which left Liverpool with the only 100% record in the Premier League, lay like rubble around the feet of manager Unai Emery and his side.

Arsenal have conceded 25 goals in their past seven visits to Anfield. Since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool in October 2015 they have scored 26 goals in eight Premier League games against the Gunners - the most one side has against another in that period.

As a measure of Arsenal's progress and expectations this does not offer much optimism, despite it being an improvement on last season's 5-1 loss and the 4-0 defeat in Arsene Wenger's final season.

There were moments during the first half when Arsenal were actually in this game despite an inexplicable desire to play out from the back and into the numerous traps set by Liverpool.

The result was bad. The attitude and most of the performance was not.

Nicolas Pepe, Arsenal's impressive record signing at £72m, should have scored when he was straight through only to be denied by Adrian. He also curled an effort just wide and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang narrowly failed to capitalise on another failure with the feet from Liverpool's deputy goalkeeper.

And yet, for all that, Arsenal once again ended well beaten.

It is not much of a consolation to say things were not quite as bad as the other times and Arsenal's excuses are wiped out by the fact the most grievous wound of all was self-inflicted by one man.

The biggest clue in their £8m signing of David Luiz was Chelsea manager Frank Lampard's lack of inclination to keep the Brazilian despite being short of experienced resources in central defence. He did not exactly offer to drive the 32-year-old to Emirates Stadium but it did not sound too far off.

The haste with which Chelsea appeared to be willing to send Luiz across London may have had some clubs smelling a rat but Arsenal took a very high-risk gamble.

And there was a graphic, horrible, illustration of how big this gamble is in one moment of crass stupidity by Luiz that snuffed out Arsenal's chances in an instant.

Emery will have talked up Arsenal's hopes of recovery at half-time. One goal down. Chances created. Pace and threat from Pepe and Aubameyang. Oh - and no stupid mistakes.

Cue Luiz effectively ripping Emery's plans before his very eyes four minutes after the interval when he inexplicably chose to drag back Mohamed Salah in the area, the extended hand and the stretched red shirt visible to everyone inside Anfield.

Salah rammed home the penalty and then Luiz compounded the error by over-committing against the Egyptian at the start of a brilliant run that ended with him scoring Liverpool's third.

In his defence, the Brazilian defender called his actions "a reflex" and went on to say the yellow card that followed the award of Liverpool's penalty had prevented him from committing a "foul" on Salah nine minutes later.

No-one can say Arsenal did not know what they were getting when they acquired Luiz. For all the talent there is a giant streak of liability running straight through him. This was liability Luiz.

All that came in a stunning 25 minutes at the start of the second half that underscored everything Arsenal must aspire to and the gap between Liverpool, Manchester City and the rest.

So where does all this leave Arsenal with the season still in its infancy?

They could be accused of a lack of courage in some recent Anfield defeats and they have a horrific record against so-called fellow 'big six' sides, failing to win any of their past 23 away league games, drawing eight, losing 15 and conceding 53 goals with only one clean sheet.

Arsenal did not give up the fight. No-one can accuse them of lacking courage. They were simply beaten by a far superior team. The Gunners actually showed a much better attitude than the carnage of recent years and finished strongly.

Emery will be encouraged by the performance of Pepe, a player of lightning pace, although he will want more end product. And if the Spaniard can somehow get Pepe, Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette working in tandem, few teams will have a more potent attack.

It was a tough day for 23-year-old Daniel Ceballos, on loan from Real Madrid, as he found this Anfield experience all too much but he is an undoubted talent who will have better days than this against less testing opposition.

Ceballos is still growing into the Premier League and will improve.

It may be a case of horses for courses as the season unfolds but there is no question this Arsenal side will cause serious problems if they can get the young Spaniard and that potent attacking trio in the team.

Arsenal left Anfield disappointed once more, but scratch beneath the surface and there were improvements and reasons for optimism for Emery, even in defeat.

It is already evident, however, that Arsenal's task this season is to finish in the top four - not an insult, simply a statement of fact.

And it is already evident that a huge gulf still exists between them and champions Manchester City and Liverpool that will not be closed quickly.

This was always going to be the second toughest fixture in the league. No need of overreacting because the inevitable happened.

I think Emery’s system worked decently. Liverpool couldn’t score from open play in the first half, had a soft penalty and Pepe had two excellent chances at 0-0. Had he converted any of them, Emery would now be hailed as a tactical genius.

David Luiz is only a short-term solution. Yes he will make mistakes but he is still far better than Mustafi.

A world class CB should be the primary target next summer, and Raul needs to find a new CM as well. Xhaka is not good enough and Guendouzi and Willock are being overplayed.

There is a very good chance of finishing 4th because Man United and Chelsea have so far looked worse than Arsenal.

Liverpool are a better team. The result is not a surprise.

David Luiz has played in a team that has won the champions league and premier league. He is not as bad as people make. All players make mistakes .

Emery job is to get us into the champions league. If that isn't achieved, you will see calls for him to go

Both Spurs and Arsenal will go into the NLD on the back of defeats, ours away to the european champions and theirs at home to Newcastle....

Exactly. To get us into the champions league we need to be beating teams like Spurs, United and Chelsea. Any points we get vs Liverpool or City are a bonus.

David Luiz believes his new team has the ability to "shine" like previous Arsenal sides, adding that he wants to help the club fight for Premier League titles.

The 32-year-old, who won the Premier League, Champions League and two FA Cups with his former club Chelsea, thinks Arsenal can challenge in all competitions this season.

"This club has the potential to shine like it has shone in the past. We have a lot of talent, we have players with a lot of quality," Luiz said.

"I came here with the ambition to fight for the Premier League title, I want to fight for other competitions also.

"It was like that at the other clubs I have been at but it was not always easy, there were difficult moments.

"I am going to try to do my best every single day and try to help everyone to believe in this because I think this club can believe a lot because it has a lot of potential.

"Football is about the end not the beginning and we are going to have to try to fight to the end."

The Gunners' 100 per cent record at the start of the season came to an end after two goals from Mohamed Salah and a Joel Matip header condemned them to a 3-1 defeat at Anfield.

Luiz gave away a penalty after pulling Salah's shirt in the second half, which the Egyptian international subsequently scored.

Despite the error, the £8m summer signing believes Arsenal have reasons to be optimistic, following their loss against the Premier League leaders.

"There is frustration always but I think you also have to be intelligent and mature to understand we did a lot of good things and we could have scored two or three goals before they did," said Luiz.

"It is always difficult to play there. Not many teams will go there and get points. I think you have to be clever to take the positive things and think about the future."

Following victories against Newcastle and Burnley and their Liverpool setback, Emery's team will host north London rivals Tottenham on September 1

Agreed. Our fans have no patience. If we don’t make the champions league, Emrey will be gone. So just back him for the season.

Nacho Monreal: Arsenal defender joins Real Sociedad

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has joined La Liga side Real Sociedad on a two-year deal.

The Spain international, 33, has started all three of the Gunners' Premier League games this season and captained the team against Burnley.

He made 250 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 10 goals, after joining the club from Malaga in January 2013.

Manager Unai Emery said on Thursday that the left-back could leave before the European transfer windows shut.

Monreal won three FA Cups during his time with Arsenal and helped them reach last season's Europa League final.

He made his international debut in 2009, has won 22 caps and was a member of Spain's 2018 World Cup squad.

Arsenal signed Kieran Tierney, 22, as his long-term replacement this month.

The former Celtic left-back is yet to make his Gunners debut and is not fit enough to be considered for Sunday's north London derby against Tottenham.

Arsenal have confirmed midfielder Mohamed Elneny has joined Besiktas on a season-long loan deal.

Today is the real acid test for Emery, really hope he goes for it and selects the strongest lineup, it's not the game to experiment. Want to see Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe all starting.

So did Emery come out with flying colours or lucky to have gotten away with it?

Definitely not lucky to get away with it.
Other then two moments of madness Arsenal showed a lot of heart and could have won that game in the second half.

There were periods in the second half where Arsenal were absolutely all over the Spuds.

Having said that Socrates continues to have mindless moments and Xhaka goes one or two games without incident and then does something stupid like he did today.

Pepe is absolutely class and once he gets his composure in the box will be a huge handful.

Emery got the team wrong (especially the midfield) - how Xhaka keeps his spot is simply beyond me! He just doesn't have the composure to avoid conceding these needless free kicks. Massive liability in the team, yet he somehow he's captain of this team :))

Leno had a shocker but not exactly surprised because ball spilling his speciality.

Result had a bitter/sweet feeling to it. It was good because we came back from 2-0 down but we should have finished them off in the second half, like we did last season, where we won 4-2 having also gone into HT 2-1 down.

In the last 20 mins, Spurs looked overwhelmed. Shame we didn't make the most of it.

Pepe is a good find for Arsenal but his end product needs a lot of work. Just needs more composure prior finishing/final pass in the build-up play. Watching him on the ball is a delight to watch.

Torreira was poor in the first half because he was largely out of position for most parts.

I really hope Ceballos will be an automatic starter, as he's clearly one of our best players in the squad.

As mentioned before, the lack of quality in the goalkeeper, backline and defensive midfield is going to cost us 4th place this season. Lets make no mistake, this spurs team were there for the taking.

It’s still early days I suppose but David Luiz looks like an utter liability and a horror signing.

Still awful at the back. The keeper doesn't look great either.

Midfield not great, but going forward still very good to watch.

Roma are in talks over a Deadline Day loan deal for Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, according to Sky in Italy.

Although the Premier League transfer window closed on August 8, many European leagues - including Serie A - are able to buy players until Monday, September 2.

Mkhitaryan, who joined Arsenal in January 2018 as part of the deal that saw Alexis Sanchez leave the Gunners for Manchester United, is travelling to Rome on Monday morning to finalise the deal, Sky Sports News understands.

Sanchez left United after a disappointing year-and-a-half last week, moving to Italy to join Inter Milan on loan.

During his time at the Emirates, Mkhitaryan has scored nine goals in 56 games, making his most recent appearance as a second-half substitute against north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Roma have already added nine players to their squad during a busy summer window, including the loan signings of Davide Zappacosta from Chelsea and Chris Smalling from United.

Matteo Guendouzi called up for France after Paul Pogba ruled out of Euro 2020 qualifiers

Arsenal's Matteo Guendouzi has received his first France call-up after Paul Pogba was ruled out of their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers through injury.

France coach Didier Deschamps said that midfielder Pogba, 26, has an "ankle problem" after Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Southampton on Saturday.

Deschamps then called up Guendouzi, 20, for the games with Albania on Saturday and Andorra next Tuesday.

Aymeric Laporte, Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe have also been ruled out.

Pogba stayed in Manchester to have the injury assessed, rather than linking up with the France squad.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan joins Roma on loan from Arsenal

Roma have signed Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a season-long loan deal.

The Italian club will pay a loan fee and the 30-year-old's wages, but there is no option or obligation to buy the Armenia international.

Mkhitaryan joined the Gunners from Manchester United in January 2018 in a swap deal involving Chile forward Alexis Sanchez.

He has scored nine goals in 59 appearances for Arsenal.

Mkhitaryan featured as a second-half substitute in Sunday's 2-2 north London derby draw with Tottenham, but has been allowed to join the Italian capital side.

His playing time at Emirates Stadium was likely to be limited this season and Arsenal boss Unai Emery plans to use his departure as a chance to give more minutes to young players.

The Premier League club also remain open to letting defender Shkodran Mustafi go before Monday's transfer deadline - but it looks unlikely the 27-year-old German will leave.

Pepe needs time and playing 3 up front as Liverpool do wont be easy for Arsenal as defence and midfield are not secure enough to stop the opposition from counter attacking.

If they can sort their back line up, will have a good chance of being top 4.

Arsenal’s defence is still a problem. However, we still have Tierney and Bellerin to comeback who will provide a whole different dynamism. Holding should provide stability at the back too. Let’s not forget Saliba for next season. Defence will take time to adjust.

I thought Luiz had a decent game but Sokratis was very poor. He is to blame for the first goal we conceded.

I’m very disappointed with Emery though. He should have started with Cabellos and Willock in the middle. Xhaka should have been dropped; he is a very poor player.

It doesn’t make sense why Mikhi was brought on despite being loaned out today - Emery needs to be firm and give likes of Nelson, Saka or Martinelli a chance out wide.

I would also take Xhaka to the side and explain to him giving a fouls in every game doesn't help team. If im correct he wasn't even booked v Spurs, which was shocking.

Bro not going to lie but I’m still trying to understand whether he was actually attempting to tackle or block the shot. Either way it was amateur stuff. He’s one of the few players we signed solely based StatDNA (analytical company which we purposed for £2m in 2014.) I can see Xhaka doing well in Germany or at Inter in Serie A.

Need to follow Liverpool’s template - sign young players that we can sell on should they fail - prioritise fitness and give the manager time.

With the likes of Saliba, Tierney signed - and likes of Willock/Nelson/Saka promoted... Let’s see how we do based on that template.

The biggest objective was to get rid of the deadwood - which we have somewhat achieved; now aim is to get into top 4. I still feel Emery is not the man. Let’s wait and see.

I only mostly watch full matches which involve LFC and it was sad to see an Arsenal team with no real youngsters from coming from within.

I agree with you about Emery, he doesn't understand the PL imo. LFC main threats apart from the top 3 interchanging with each other is the full backs, which Emery gave them near 100% freedom to run forward.

The biggest problem for your team is continous buying of average players, for a huge club like Arsenal this is not good enough. Getting rid of dead wood can take a while and the team suffers so if you can make the top(I think you will), it wlll be a great season and something to build upon next year.

Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock has signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League club.

The England Under-21 international has been at the club since he was four.

Willock, who made his debut in September 2017 in a League Cup game against Doncaster, started Arsenal's first three Premier League games this season.

"It is only right in my heart and my mind to continue my career here," the 20-year-old told Arsenal.com.

He added: "The manager has put a lot of faith in not just me but a load of youngsters so far this season - every day in training he is encouraging to us."

Arsenal have confirmed that Alexandre Lacazette will be out for ‘several weeks’ due to an ‘ongoing ankle injury’.

Lacazette first felt the ankle problem during Arsenal’s pre-season friendly with Lyon and subsequently missed the side’s Premier League opener against Newcastle.

The Frenchman returned to Unai Emery’s starting XI for a 2-1 win over Burnley before making a substitute appearance in Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat at Liverpool the following weekend. After starting and scoring in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, it was assumed Lacazette had fully recovered from his ankle injury but the striker is set to be sidelined for the remainder of September.

‘After assessments to an ongoing ankle issue, we have advised that Alex will need to rest and strengthen his ankle to regain full fitness,’ an Arsenal statement said on Friday ahead of the side’s trip to Watford. ‘Alex has been playing through this injury for several weeks.

‘He is likely to be back in action in October.’ Matches Lacazette will likely miss Watford vs Arsenal – Premier League (Sept 15) Franfurt vs Arsenal – Europa League (Sept 19) Arsenal vs Aston Villa – Premier League (Sept 22) Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest – EFL Cup (Sept 24) Manchester United vs Arsenal – Premier League (Sept 30) T

Emery confirmed that Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin will miss Arsenal’s trip to Vicarage Road despite both full-backs returning to training this week. Asked whether they could return, Emery replied: ‘Not yet. It depends on their progress for the next weeks.

‘Maybe we can decide to play at the beginning with the U23s, to be ready with us. ‘Maybe if they play with the U23s they can take confidence and then after play with us 100 per cent.’

Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka both had injury scares during the international break, but Emery revealed on Friday that the midfield duo are ‘ready’ to face Watford. On Rob Holding’s fitness, Emery added:

‘He has earned matches with U23s. ‘With more minutes with U23 he can be closer to give us his performance. ‘At the moment we are working with three centre-backs, thinking on Sunday, now four. Rob is now the five, [Konstantinos] Mavropanos the sixth.’

Is there any hope for Arsenal this season? Is Emery's judgement under question now?

Can't believe how bad the Arsenal defence is.

The midfield at times was nowhere to be seen.

So disorganised.
