Arshad Khan “Chaiwala” - Discussion Thread

If he was so ordinary and average, why did the women click his photograph? Surely his type faces are rare in the place where he was working.

Not saying he is ordinary but compared to Pathan guys in general, he is not extraordinary. Some girl going for a photowalk, yeah sure why not, but even she was surprised when the pic went viral. Likely reason is because it presents a detached sanitized version of a pathan laborer, most city girls won't even go close to someone like him, let along talk to him. Also, doesn't it make those praising him feel good about themselves, how open minded and unconscious of the social class system they must feel praising the beauty of a poor chaiwalla.

The lady was a photographer, it's common for photographers in Pakistan to take pictures of random people and stuff, there are tons of pictures like that on social media it's just that this photo went viral because of the chaiwalas looks and pose. It wasn't a planned photo, if you read what the photographer said, she was just taking pics of this dude making tea, it just so happened that he looked up.

"Ordinary" in the sense that he doesn't "stand out" that much, not in terms of aesthetics but overall phenotype, that if you look at him in some market of Peshawar you'd say "wow". I've seen a Saudi-Arab lady say that his looks are "common" among the Pashtun labourers/workers in her country (keeping in mind they too aren't groomed), and anyone familiar with Pashtuns would say the same (I can confirm it, being an agenda-less non Pashtun, and having seen dozens of them in Pak as much as the UAE). That's what a Delhi-based Indian blogger wrote, in a text on the chaiwala :

An Indian friend married to a Pakistani once told me, the Pakhtun shopkeepers are finer than the work on the famous Afghan carpets they sell. Now I know what she means, as do most of the ladies around me, it seems.

http://blogs.tribune.com.pk/story/42235/chaiwala-pe-charcha-in-india/

Let's also quote from "The Pathans, 550 B.C.-A.D. 1957", the classic of Sir Olaf Caroe, the famed British intellectual-administrator who served as the Governor of the NWFP province - it talks of the Afridi tribe in particular, but could be more generic ; I don't think a Westerner could make more hyperbolic compliments on a population's looks :

Many a young Afridi might stand as model for Apollo, while the Afridi elder can display the gravity of Zeus.

pp. 44-45

The original picture was appreciated for the "class" of a so called chaiwala (posing like a model). It's only Eurocentric Westerners and mentally colonized non Pashtun "desis" who kept coming back to his blue eyes. No Pashtun would notice it.

Ofcourse he look ordinary in a sense that he doesn't stick out like a sore tumb. I don't know what people expected him to look like? If he looked like a generic white dude no one will pay attention. The trick is looking good while also familiar at the same time ;)

Shah Rukh Just Tweeted This About Pakistan's Blue Eyed 'Chaiwalla'

Just when you thought the obsessing over Islamabad's blue-eyed 'chaiwalla' was dying, here comes one more tweet (and quite an important one at that) about the online sensation. Bollywood's Badshah has something really nice to say about Arshad Khan.

"Beauty lies in simplicity," said Shah Rukh Khan in a tweet shared earlier today. Here's what happened.

During an interview with a local channel in Pakistan, Arshad was asked who he thought he looked like. Blushing slightly, he said - "Shah Rukh Khan."

So a Twitter user posted that very clip of the interview and tagged SRK, who responded soonest.

Since being tweeted a few hours ago, SRK's tweet has received over 2,200 retweets and more than 5,800 'likes'.

Arshad Khan shot to fame after a photographer noticed him and shared his picture online. He has since had social media gushing over him, landed himself a modelling job and also had a makeover.

We can assume though that this compliment from Shah Rukh Khan would mean a lot to him.

How noble of him. Schools and hospitals are the desperate need of this nation not metros and motorways. An educated nation won't need to take loans to build infrastructure.

Shocking: 'Chaiwala' Arshad Khan quits showbiz

It is not everyday that destiny smiles on one.

Who could better epitomise this than ‘chaiwala’ Arshad Khan. The social media sensation had been on a roll ever since a photo of his went viral on social media. From landing a modelling contract to bagging a film role, Arshad looked set for a dream run in the public gaze.

Alas, some things are just not meant to be. In a rather surprising turn of events, word has it that Arshad has bid adieu to the high life.

“Arshad’s appearance in a recent photo shoot and Muskan Jay song Beparwai did not go down well with his family and peers,” the social media sensation’s manager Abdullah told The Express Tribune. He said Arshad had been under concerted pressure to distance himself from the world of entertainment.

“Since Arshad has quit showbiz, he looks set to return to the Islamabad dhaba he used to work at prior to his tryst with fame,” Abdullah said. He went on to add that Arshad was open to pursuing a career in journalism as that was the only kind of entertainment-related job his family had no issue with.

Sad to see people ridiculing the poor fellow now that he's returned to his humble origins. He never asked anyone to objectify him and drag him into the world of entertainment.

The media and general public should let him get on with his life without having to worry about what everyone else wants him to do with it.

Pakistani Chai Wala: Arshad Khan Chai Wala Goes Back To Making Tea For People Again

arshad.jpg

Remember that handsome chai wala (Arshad Khan) that was discovered back in 2016 when a picture of him went viral in social media who became an internet sensation overnight has started making tea for people once again.

I remember reading his views on movies then, seemed pretty regressive , probably would had hard time at showbiz.

Hope he made some money though.

If he has any acting skills, he should be in show biz or at least a model in fashion industry. Poor fellow. His looks are not helping him in getting rich.

He got some contracts. But thing is he is very skinny (almost malnourished) and like 5'7 so fairly shot. Has no presence and probably not a great speaker. And has regressive views.

So not surprising

Looks aren't everything and he actually got lucky. I daily see at least half a dozen blokes with similar/better looks. Its just that most are bus/wagon conductors, rickshaw drivers, shopkeepers, pheriwala etc so no one pays them any attention.

Arshad 'Chaiwala' Khan goes back to making tea, also stays in showbiz

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Arshad Khan ‘Chaiwala’, who became heartthrob of Pakistan in 2016, expressed that he has gone back to working at a tea stall along with working in the showbiz industry.

Refuting the news of retiring from the industry, he expressed that all the rumors going on Youtube, Facebook and other social websites are false as industry is also his work and he cannot leave it just like that.

Arshad Khan shared that he stopped working for a month or two citing family reasons. He added that he is still working in the industry as he will be seen in the role of an army officer in upcoming move ’24 Hours’ which is expected to release in December this year.

He went on to say that a music video named ‘Chai’ will also be released soon. “I have also been doing modeling-related work as well”, he added.

Model Arshad Khan asserted that he cannot and does not want to stop making tea as ‘chai’ is his identity and he can never forget it. He is also planning to open a tea café in the country. “I love it when people call me Arshad Khan Chaiwala”, he continued.

On the other hand, talking about his stardom, he expressed that only difference between his earlier and this life is that he would get out of the house without paying heed to his clothes or condition and would even sit on a footpath along with his friends before rising to fame whereas now he has to take care of his appearance and everything else before stepping out of the house.

From humble beginnings as a teamaker at a small dhaba in Islamabad’s Sunday Bazaar, Arshad Khan Chaiwala’s journey to global internet sensation and now businessman is quite an interesting one.

When he first made his mark on the world, it was more by accident than design. He was at work when he was snapped by a professional photographer exploring the open-air Sunday Bazaar. She later shared her work on Instagram, marveling at his striking good looks.

The pictures soon went viral — fans swooned over his blue eyes, chiseled features and simplicity. His appeal even transcended the borders of his home country: he developed quite the following in neighbouring India as well.

But almost as abruptly as Arshad Khan had arrived in the public imagination, he left — choosing the comfort of relative anonymity over the sudden fame he had been thrust into.

However, after years away from the public view, Khan is now back in the news. He has re-emerged as a quietly confident entrepreneur capitalising on his brand to launch a desi-themed café in Islamabad.

Who is the man?

Arshad Khan, aka the 'Chaiwala' hails from Mardan. He is a brother to 17 siblings.

He was introduced to the world back in 2016, when Islamabad-based photographer Jiah Ali shared a picture of him on Instagram casually pouring tea while looking straight into the camera with his piercing eyes.

The pictures caught the fancy of netizens, who raved about his good looks and compared him to celebrities from Bollywood and Hollywood.

Landing in Showbiz

As Khan climbed up the popularity charts, offers for work followed. He made a mark during a ramp walk for Bridal Couture Week, where he was the showstopper for Ziggy Menswear, a UK-based brand. Khan wore a black and gold ensemble, and he flaunted it like a king.

Following that gig, he also featured in a music video. The song — sung and shot by local artists — featured Arshad Khan in a 'Chaiwala' role as girls swarm around him and capture selfies with him.

"Sari Bachiyan mil kay gao, Chaiwala Chaiwala" (All the girls sing: the chaiwala, the chaiwala') go the lyrics of the (admittedly not very good) song. The video, posted on November 28, 2018, got thousands of views soon after it was uploaded.

Khan's name was also included in a list of the 50 most attractive people in Asia by a London-based magazine.

However, seemingly overwhelmed by the sudden fame and public attention that followed him everywhere post his public debut, Arshad Khan quietly disappeared, returning to a simpler life doing what he did best.

Talk of the town

Fast forward to 2020, Khan resurfaced on social media after fans discovered that he was the force behind a newly-launched chai café in Islamabad named 'Café Chaiwala Roof Top'.

Speaking to the media about his café, Arshad said: “Most people asked me to remove 'Chaiwala' from the name of the cafe, but I think this is something that gifted me an identity of my own, which I will always cherish.”

Arshad Khan's cafe is themed around truck art and, in a bid to promote Pakistani culture and heritage, vibrant colours have been used in the decorations and interior designing. Apart from tea, he serves around 15-20 different types of accompaniments at the café.

Social media can be a very powerful tool. When used right, it can yield fruitful results - so much so - it has the ability to change lives. After his own restaurant in Islamabad, Khan's next venture is international! The famous chaiwala is all set to open his first chai outlet in London!

Taking to Facebook, the now 23-year-old shared, "Strength and growth come only through continuous effort. Cafe Chaiwala will Insha Allah open its first café outlet in London end of this year."

While the details of his new project are still under wraps, Khan is ecstatic to take his chai to London.

In 2016, a chai vendor made waves on Pakistani social media after he went viral for his striking blue eyes. The former tea-seller from Islamabad has just opened up his own rooftop café in Islamabad which is now functional! Khan has named his venture Café Chai Wala, explaining why he didn’t use his own name.

Talking to Urdu News, Khan said, “Many people told me to change the current name and instead name it Arshad Khan, but I refused because Chai Wala is my identity.” He added how he still brews up a storm when his friends want some chai made by him.

Khan’s café boasts traditional and cultural elements, from truck art on the walls, desi straw tables, and chairs, Urdu script, etc. The menu currently has 15-20 dishes, apart from tea.

Chaiwala could hardly string two sentences together in Urdu when he became an overnight success but now look at him, he speaks English as well as perfect Urdu at a decent level. It just shows that even he has more of a personality than Babar Azam.

Picture taken by Umar Akmal?. Guy looks less Italian gangster and more Pakistani waiter now. Good story though

Café Chaiwala Arshad Khan London in deep financial trouble

The London café of Pakistan’s most famous Chaiwala Arshad Khan has run into serious financial troubles, a year after its mega launch.

The UK franchise owners have not paid royalty to Arshad Khan as promised, according to an insider. Arshad Khan has been making polite requests to the London café owners who have refused to pay him citing business losses and also refused to pay rent to the landlord.

Arshad Khan’s brand was brought to the UK last year by two cousins: Nadir Khan Durrani and Yaver Akbar Durrani.

Nadir is a UK national and Yaver Akbar Durrani is a Canadian national who lives in the United States. They registered company in early 2021 and currently doing business as an active company. Café Chaiwala Arshad Khan is located in East London on 229 Ilford Lane. Yaver Akbar Durrani has claimed he owns two dozen Popeyes branches in the US through his company AR Restaurants Group. The situation is so bad that the café never opened its ground floor section to the public because of poor quality of service, insiders say.

The brand was a big hit when it opened its doors last year and Asians would come from all over the UK for Chai but the poor quality, mismanagement and lack of hygiene at the café deterred the customers.

Insiders said that Yaver Akbar Durrani and Nadir Durrani have run into a legal dispute with the owner of the building after failing to pay rent of over six months, citing business losses and complaining that that the rent is too much and should be reduced. Yaver Akbar Durrani held meetings with Arshad Khan in Islamabad and made promises to clear the pending monthly royalty but later on told him he cannot pay him until the business goes into profit. He told Arshad Khan that too many Chai cafes have opened nearby on Ilford Lane and that has damaged his business. Arshad Khan has been trying to keep the issue private to protect his brand and Yaver Akbar Durrani has exploited this point. He has also accused Arshad Khan of not delivering the full recipes to London café as promised originally.

When opening the café last year in London, brothers Bahadur Durrani, and Yaver Akbar Durrani and Nadir Durrani announced to open several franchise “Café Chaiwala Arshad Khan” in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

A source at Arshad Khan Chaiwala said that the Pakistani national has sold international franchise to Durrani brothers but they have broken the contract and agreement by not paying royalty to Arshad Khan and continuing to use his name therefore Arshad Khan will not allow them to use the brand and franchise anymore. “Both sides have threatened legal action against each other,” said the source in Islamabad.

During the London launch, the Master Franchisees-UK had promised that Arshad Khan will visit London soon to meet his fans and to brew karak Chai for them but later on they didn’t make arrangements for his travel to the UK as the relations soured over non-payments.

Yaver Akbar Durrani, Master Franchisee-UK, said at the launch of the café: “I must congratulate Arshad Khan and my team for the joint venture in bringing Café Chai Wala Arshad Khan to the UK. We think it will be awesome. We should be able to open one unit by the end of this year and many more in the UK area.”

That promise has failed, badly.

The chai seller was 16 back in October 2016 when photographer Javeria Ali made his casual picture while he was serving Chai to a customer and she put it on her Instagram with the caption: “Hot Tea”. Arshad Khan’s striking looks, blue eyes and a haunting seriousness on his face shot him to overnight fame. He found out that he had become a sensation when children, men and women started swamping the Dhabba where he worked to make pictures with him and soon he was all over social media, on the magazine covers and television crews started airing his story. After going viral, Arshad Khan, who is originally from a conservative Pashtun family living in Mardan, was nicknamed “Chaiwala” and that’s where the brand name comes.

Nadra suspends nationality of viral Arshad ‘chaiwala’

Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court issued notices to the federal government and other respondents after social media personality Arshad Khan, who rose to fame as ‘chaiwala’, challenged the blocking of his computerised national identity card (CNIC) and passport.

Arshad Khan, who hails from Mardan, rose to fame back in 2016 when a photographer shared a photo of him pouring tea on Instagram, which went viral.

Represented by Barrister Umer Ijaz Gilani, the petitioner approached the court under Article 199 of the Constitution, claiming that the blocking of his identity documents by Nadra and the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports was both unlawful and unconstitutional.

During the hearing, Mr Gilani argued that Arshad Khan symbolised the quintessential Pakistani dream — rising from humble beginnings to international fame after a candid photograph of him selling tea in Islamabad went viral. Despite his global recognition, the actions of Nadra and other authorities have jeopardised his future career and tarnished his reputation.

LHC seeks response from govt after Arshad’s passport, ID card blocked

He further asserted that the demand by Nadra for pre-1978 proof of residency was based on mala fide intent and lacked legal justification, especially when Mr Khan’s family had a documented citizenship history. Citing articles 4, 9, 14, and 18 of the Constitution, the lawyer emphasised the violation of Mr Khan’s rights to livelihood, dignity, and lawful treatment.

The court was also informed of precedents from the Sindh High Court, Islamabad High Court, and previous judgements of the Lahore High Court, where the blocking of CNICs and passports without due process was declared illegal. In response, the assistant attorney general and Nadra’s law officer questioned the maintainability of the petition, arguing that the petitioner failed to submit sufficient documentation proving Pakistani nationality.

Justice Hassan issued notices to the respondents for April 17 seeking para-wise comments and instructing senior officials from Nadra and the Directorate of Immigration and Passports to appear with relevant records to justify their actions.

The court also restrained the authorities from taking any adverse action against the petitioner as well.

In a related development, Justice Hassan also restrained the authorities from taking any coercive action against a petitioner seeking recognition of Pakistani citizenship by birth until the determination of his status.

The decision was handed down by a single bench comprising Justice Jawad Hassan, while hearing a plea, filed by the petitioner through Advocate Fatima tuz Zahra Butt.

The petitioner, born in Pakistan to Afghan refugee parents, presented a birth certificate issued by the Government of Pakistan. He approached the court seeking the issuance of a CNIC and official recognition of his citizenship under Section 4 of the Pakistan Citizenship Act, 1951, which affirmed the principle of jus soli — citizenship by birth.

Nothing against Arshad Khan personally but I find the whole concept of elevating someone to levels of worship simply because they have fair skin and blue eyes repulsive and disgusting. A few years ago, I think it was Indians and their social Media which elevated him to "stardom" and gave him hype.

A person should be appreciated for what they have achieved through hard work in my opinion. I know that I am probably in the minority but I don't subscribe to these "insta-celebreties" and their elevation due to the skills of Makeup artists and photographers who emphasize and enhance certain physical traits.

There is something not right with humanity...

Having said that he seems to be a humble down to earth guy when I hear him talk so that's good.
