PCB Spokesman: "Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam were wearing Apple watches. It was shown on TV so when the team came off the field after dismissing England, the PCB and ICC anti-corruption officers came and explained that smart watches aren't allowed, so please take them off and don't wear them again. That's all that happened".

Betting on the fly?

I would think that they're using them as fitness trackers, tracking heart rates and distance covered in the field rather than a means of receiving messages when you can use drinks breaks or substitutes on the boundary rope to deliver messages in a manner that is impossible to be tracked via technology.

Lame rule! They are just picking on Pakistan! A little racist would you think?

To my knowledge, Apple watches are only Bluetooth. And unless they're carrying their phone with them, the watches won't be connected to anything and would be offline

What's wrong with wearing them offline??

Glad punitive action was taken against them for wearing the atrocity against mankind that is an Apple watch.

doesn't make sense, the smart watch is of no use(communicating wise) if the phone is not close enough for bluetooth signal to be connected

Anything and everything a Pakistani player will result in a fine, ban, or arrest.

What’s next? Will they arrest Sarfraz for making a century, and call it suspicious batting?

Really comparing apples with oranges here. At least there is some technological possibility regarding the smart watches being used for cheating.

Don't understand the ridiculous victim mentality being shown by some posters above. Bit of a non issue, they got told to not wear them and they took them off, end of

Interesting to see that ICC anti-corruption didn't reach to Pandya yet

Shouldn't they have checked before they went onto the field wearing them.

I mean that is the obvious thing isn't it.

Pakistan reprimanded by anti-corruption official for wearing smart watches during England Test

An anti-corruption official reprimanded Pakistan’s players for wearing smart watches on the opening day of the first Test at Lord’s, ordering players to stop wearing them.

“An ICC anti-corruption officer came to us and told us this is not allowed,” said Pakistan player Hasan Ali. “So next time nobody will wear them.”

“I didn't know earlier that anyone was wearing one.”

Smart watches must be disabled to comply with ICC anti-corruption regulations. Two Pakistani players - Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq - appeared to be wearing the watches during the day, though there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing in this instance.

The ICC prohibits Apple watches in any way connected to a phone or WiFi or capable of receiving communications such as messages. Such watches are considered phones - which are disabled under the ICC’s rules for players and match officials - unless they are disabled, meaning they are offline and just used as watches. In this instance, it is unclear or not whether the watches were on or disabled.

The reaction to players wearing the watches reflects the heightened sensitivity around corruption in cricket, which remains a huge concern for the ICC. At Lord’s in 2010, three Pakistan players - including Mohammad Amir, who is playing in this game - were implicated in one of the biggest corruption scandals in the sport’s history, over deliberately bowling no-balls to order.

Should they choose to do so, the ICC is entitled to download all the material from the smart watches to monitor activity. Last year, the ICC’s anti-corruption unit gained the power to force players to hand over their mobile phones - including all activity on instant messaging services such as WhatsApp - as part of attempts to curb the risk of corruption.

In the final three months of last year, three international captains - including Pakistan’s Sarfraz Ahmed - reported illegal approaches from bookmakers to the ICC. While the governing body believes that such reports show that players understand their responsibilities to safeguard the integrity of the sport, the approaches show that criminals continue to believe that some players are susceptible to match-fixing. The head of the international players’ association, Tony Irish, has also recently warned that women cricketers are likely to be targeted too as the sport becomes more prominent.

Smart watches have previously been used illicitly in Major League Baseball. Last year, the Boston Red Sox were found to have used the watches to inform their batsmen of the signs used by pitchers during matches, informing the batsmen of the pitches they would then face.

The reprimand from the ICC’s anti-corruption unit ended a day which Pakistan had dominated, as they reached 50-1 in reply to England’s 184 - the lowest first innings total of any Test match in England since 2009. England required 70 from Alastair Cook, a return to form after a dreadful tour of New Zealand, to even reach that mark.

According to some this issue was raised by the English media.

Are the English media yet again looking for something to tarnish Pakistan as they have done many times in the past?

British media trying to stir some ****. Desperate attempts. Also, one cannot use apple watches if they are in the ground as apple watches unlike samsung gear watches cannot act standalone. Shouldnt be an issue as long as the smart watch is wifi only model.

What type of smart watch do you think this it is? I know it's hard to say from this photo. Also Asad's face, looks confused.

Series 3 Apple watches allow you to make calls/send messages even if you don't have phone with you, they have cellular capabilities.

That’s ridiculous. They are simple watches without phones in the vicinity. Have some common sense ICC

Tbh, it looks more like a fitbit than an Apple watch but the latter does comes with sports bands as well. Smart watches are rubbish as cellular devices, only good in terms of fitness tracking and calling an uber on the go.

Shadab Khan unlike Shafiq and Babar is wearing a fitbit which is a much better proposition.

I'm confused. Why wear these watches? Would it help them to bat / bowl better?

ICC’s main concerned in radio (cellular radio), which is part of latest Apple Watch. They act like phone and always connected.

Obviously they are not aware. It’s 2018, Apple Watch is very useful fitness and health monitoring device not to mention excellent iPhone companion device. They are very popular here in US among young and atheletes.

I feel that some heads should roll in the PCB setup as well. ICC regulations are known so why did this happen? There are supposed to be experts on this matter in the PCB setup so they should have checked what players are wearing etc.

Here is some breaking news for PCB gents in charge of our team

============

Communications devices are prohibited within the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) Regulations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that under the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) Regulations, smart watches are not permitted to be worn on the field and in areas designated as PMOA.

Communications devices are prohibited within the PMOA and no player is allowed to be in possession of or use a communications device which is connected to the internet whilst there.

Smart watches in any way connected to a phone or WI-FI or in any way capable of receiving communications are not allowed and as such we will be reminding players that such devices must be surrendered along with their mobile devices on arrival at the ground on match days.

Come on Asad!

Babar, I can understand but this is absurd from a veteran like Asad Shafiq.

PS: Whenever it's Pak v Eng, there is always a controversy on the horizon

Its about the advice given to them by PCB ACU guys who are clearly not doing their job.

There are smart watches from Apple and Samsung that have built in LTE and don't need to be paired with a phone just so you know.

Media reports indicate that Richard Kettleborough has been spoken to by the ICC's anti-corruption unit (ACU) after he was seen taking to the field wearing a smartwatch!

Always happens in England!

Oh no, the British media are targeting Pakistan again.

This time they have targeted Chaudhry Richard Kettleborough.

How racist and anti-Pakistan are they.
