Asian Games 2023 - Hangzhou - Discussion

Wow!! What a Trashing. Pakistan hockey team looked clueless. They had absolutely no idea what was happening. India seemed to just cruise through. I have been watching hockey for decades and have never seen such display by Pakistanis. Is everything alright??

You have missed the last 8 years or so..
I think india has lost just 1 or 2 games in these years

Very sad to see the state of sports in Pakistan - horrifying that Pakistan is yet to open the medal tally.

Yeah, I have followed them. But this was special. I have never seen so many goals conceded by Pakistan. This just be our biggest win. Pakistanis didn't even look like they are capable of competing

Can’t believe we domolished Pakistan hockey team 10-2 in Asian Games.

The blues put on an absolute show

Team India's trio Chenai Kynan Darius, Sandhu Zoravar Singh and Tondaiman Prithviraj defeated Team Kuwait by 2 points and set a new Asian Games record to win the gold medal in Shooting, Men's Trap Team event, at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou.

Team India's Sable Avinash Mukund has defeated Team Japan's Aoki Ryoma (Silver) and Sunada Seiya (Bronze) to win the gold medal in Athletics, Men's 3000m Steeplechase event at Hangzhou Asian Games

Pakistan must be the worst nation on the planet when it comes to population vs actual performance in sports.

I mean its beyond pathetic.

Bangladesh says "hi". Pakistan is good in Cricket, has great achievements in hockey and squash, pretty good in kabbaddi, weigh lifting, and coupe of others. Bangladesh is mediocre in cricket and just awful in every other sport. Only in chess tnrh seem to be better than Pakistanis. Otherwise bangladesh is downright the worst sporting country ever

Wang Chuqin won the men's single championship. Wang also became the first person in Asian Games history to win 4 gold medals in table tennis events.

Pakistan's medal hopes in the Asian Games have suffered a setback, Arshad Nadeem has withdrawn from the Asian Games.

Arshad Nadeem was scheduled to take part in the javelin throw competition yesterday, he was hoping for a medal for Pakistan in the Asian Games.

Chief D-Mission Pakistan, Asian Games says that Arshad Nadeem is suffering from a knee injury.

According to the POA, Arshad Nadeem had complained of pain after reaching Hangzhou, he was in pain since the World Championship, Arshad Nadeem underwent MRI on October 2.

Arshad Nadeem has decided to withdraw from the Asian Games keeping in mind the preparations for the Paris Olympics.

So sad to hear about Arshad Nadeem. i have listed to quite a few of his inteviews. as an indian, i really like the bloke, down to earth guy- has come up on his own and displays passion but with dignity, a real roll model! Good luck and speedy recovery

WIth Arshad you were almost guranteed atleast a medal for Pak oh boy, hope he recovers well✌✌

Sad to see nadeem missing out.. would have loved to see 90+m challenge to neeraj

I think a 100 will be tough. We will get to 90, but getting a 100 will require nearly all the wrestlers to get a medal.

A more possible target is 22 gold medals, which should help us take the 4th position overall.
Let's see. We are already in 4th, and all the wrestlers do have a chance to get medals alongside archery, badminton, javelin etc. We are making splashes, and very soon will get medals in olympics too. The focus and investment is there

Pakistan have regressed very badly. India and Pakistan used to be neck to neck in 80s and early 90s. Now Pakistan doesn't even win those many medals let alone making progress.

Just thinking, if these hired African athletes were not allowed to participate, what would have been our gold count

Yasir Muhammad finishes 4th in Javelin throw a good result for him still a shame, that Nadeem got injured

Gold for Sri Lanka, Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Tharushi brought home the first gold medal for Sri Lanka in athletics women's 800m event

Just noticed that Pakistan hockey team lost to Japan 2-3 and could not make it to semifinals  ... I still remember Pakistan hockey's glory days with players like Shahbaz Ahmed. Disheartening to see how the mighty have fallen with a 10-2 defeat against India and a defeat against a minnow like Japan.

They are playing Malaysia this Friday for 5th and 6th place. Can Pakistan at least defeat Malaysia?

Wait a minute... Is North korea at 3rd place with 33 Gold medals??
How??
As per western media everyone except the Supreme Leader is malnourished and poor.

Just did the numbers again. We should get to a 100 medals with 25 gold. That would cement our 4th position.

Generally, Iran and Uzbekistan/Kazakhstan get close to 20 golds. So we need to cross 20 golds to be assured of the 4th position. For both of these countries, a high chunk of their gold medals comes from wrestling, which usually happens towards the end of the games. Previously we have been sitting pretty at the 4th spot with 15 medals and suddenly the Uzbeks and the Iranians come back in the last 3 days and pip us for the 4th spot.

I am not as confident in wrestling as you are. We aren’t very strong in Greco-Roman, and feeestyle is our strength. But I am also concerned whether the events with Brijbhushan and the BJP not taking action against him has also led to lowering of morale. I expect a lower medal count in wrestling this year.

Republic of Korea : South Korea
Democratic people's Republic of Korea: North Korea.

The North has Democracy only in the name.

Awesome performance from India so far, inching towards the magical 100!.

I'll bet most of the Qatar, Omani and Bahrain medal winners/competitors are expat Nigerians, Kenyans or from other african countries.

Cricket should be exciting as well with BD, SL and Pak in the mix.

Uzbekistan wins a lot of gold medals in kurash wrestling, which is anyway majorly Central Asian form of wrestling. That competition is over and they won 4 golds there, last time it was 6. The other sport where they win a lot of golds is boxing, which is schedule for today and tomorrow. Wrestling is evenly matched, both will win a couple of golds I guess.

Thanks. Yeah, Uzbeks do really well in contact sport and these bouts generally happen towards the end of the games. So, I always expect both Iran and Uzbekistan to catch-up rapidly in the next day or so. I didn’t know about Kurrash, will look it up.

But if India can cross the 24 gold mark (they are already at 22, and have 6 strong chances), I think the 4th position should be safe.

Just watched Saurav Ghoshal's interview. What a legend of Indian sport leave alone Indian Squash.
When he leaves, it will be like getting a replacement for Sachin when he left. Guys like Saurav Ghoshal, Rohan Bopanna, Achanta Sharath Kamal, Mohammed Anas Yahiya, Sunil Chhetri are the under rated and unsung heroes of Indian sport. Typically humility and dignity in them, they get the job done without much fanfare.

As expected - the Shooting contingent gave us a a big set of Gold Medals. I could only see Manu Bhaker from the Tokyo Olympic contingent (a big disaster for all hopeful Indian shooting fans) who is still competing in this Asian Games.

It feels so great to see Indians winning numerous Gold & Silver Medals in Archery & Athletics & not to forget the Bronze medals. So many silver medals in the Athletics in Long Jump, Decathlon, 5000m, 300m steeplechase, 800m and 1500m events. I know this is still only Asian Games and the competition is always less stronger than in the Olympics or World Championships. But then we never won so many medals in Athletics until now in Asian Games.

It is very satisfying to see Indian archers beat the mighty, mighty world class South Korean archers in the compound event team finals. I used to look forward to Deepika Kumari's & Atanu Das's games in Asian & Olympic games but they always used to crumble in the most tough games or high pressure moments. Now it is so refreshing to see names like young Aditi Goswami, Ojas Praveen, Jyoti Surekha .... being calm & silent in the most pressure filled closing moments of the game against more accomplished competitors. We already have 4 gold medals in the bag (3 won + 1 for sure because finals is between 2 Indian archers) and hopefully one or two more can also be won. In all the Asian games until now India had just 1 gold medal and that too more than a decade before in a team's event.

Our Boxing contingent got 3 bronze medals and a lone silver medal. The 4 member Weightlifting team did not win any medal & unfortunately (or fortunately) Olympic medalist Mirabhai Chanu failed to win any medal.

Fascinating to note that we have folks winning in Equestrian, Roller Skating, Canoeing, Bridge, Wushu.

But we are still a big zero in Swimming & Cycling.

I feel those wrestlers who took part in the protest fight against Brijbhushan may not have had the best preparation that they could have hoped for. Let us see how Bajrang Punia plays. winning a medal in Asian Games wrestling competition is many notches tougher when compared to Commonwealth games because we have many powerful wrestlers coming from Japan, Central Asia, China, Iran & etc (sans American, East European & Russian wrestlers).

Digressing a bit - The government asked the Wrestling Federation to stop its operations until elections are held for selecting the next chief. Brijbhushan cannot continue as the chief of Wrestling Federation of India because his period is over & he cannot contest any more. The Delhi Police (which comes under Central government) has filed charge sheet against him in the Delhi High Court to prosecute him and indicated to the court that they have sufficient evidence against him for having harrassed women wrestlers in numerous instances. He is out on bail. Even the committee formed by the Central govt's Sports Ministry to investigate the complaints against him (led by the legendary Indian Boxer MC Mary Khom) has indicated that the complaints are indeed true and the same has been sighted by the Delhi Police in their charge sheet against Brijbhushan in the Delhi High Court. It is a sad story that some of the male Wrestlers later become goondas for hire, enter politics with out any real aim of doing social service and one has even been put into Jail (2 time Olympic medal winner Sushil Kumar).

I saw an African lady win a bronze medal for Kazhakistan, IIRC, in one of the Athletic events and that was a big surprise for me considering that Kazhakistan is a Central Asian nation which is not as rich as either Qatar or Bahrain. Bahrain has a Nigerian lady athlete and she has won 4 Gold medals for Bahrain by winning all the 4 possible 400 metre events. It seems these Gulf nations use Ethiopian, Kenyan Athletes for long distance running and Nigerian athletes for Sprint running & triple/long jump events.

Can we get Gold in Men's Hockey, Badminton men's doubles events ?

Hopefully in cricket too.we can't loose anything now

Pakistan down at number 30 with one silver and one bronze medal.
Indians in general are shorter and more puny looking than Pakistanis. Pakistanis are more athletic and more powerful people. It is a pity that in spite of this Pakistan is so far below.

Unfortunately, the lack of facilities is the main reason why our sports are suffering. Other than cricket, every athlete in Pakistan is hardly getting any support from the government.

You are generalizing 1.4 billion plus people with that blanket statement. Nor does every sport require tall, heavily muscled individuals out there- The Chinese are a prime example of this.

Pakistan reach kabaddi semis

Pakistan advanced into the semi-finals of the men’s kabaddi competition on Thursday after beating Malaysia 58-32 in their final Group ‘B’ clash of the Asian Games, ensuring at least a medal with their passage to the last four.

In a winner-takes-all clash Malaysia looked good in phases but couldn’t resist the challenge from Pakistan, who are now at least assured of a bronze even if they were to lose the semi-final against the top-placed finisher of Group ‘A’.

Elsewhere at the Games, Pakistan’s interest in the badminton tournament ended after Murad Ali and Mohammad Irfan Saeed lost their men’s doubles last-16 clash 14-21, 11-21 to Cheuk Him Law and Shing Choi Yeung of Hong Kong.

Heartening to see Tejaswin Shanker win silver in Decathlon, what a supreme endurance sport. Considering he was a core high jumper to get where he is , required loads of dedication, innovation, hard work and perseverance. and lastly this guy is a risk taker. A real diamond!
Heartening to watch our guys compete and compete well in a lot of non traditional sports.

Watching Satwik and Chirag in the Badminton doubles is like watching a young Leander and Mahesh in the 90's Tennis! the same passion, intensity and hunger - long may our guys continue to fire like this!

I have been to Karachi..
Pakistan and Pakistani is just an artificial construct, in terms of gene pool they are exactly same as rest of India and Bangladesh. But I guess to understand that you need some education.

Indians have 80+ medals as compared to so called Janbaaz Pakistanis.

So we crossed 100. About swimming, we have improved a lot in last one and half decade, it would need some more time, but I assure you it's in the right direction

This is the biggest myth capsule that you guys get fed from your first day on this planet. And today we zonked you in kabaddi as well...where on erf was your 'more athletic and more Powerful.

I don't know what's wrong with the current generation of Pakistani sportsmen. They seem to have lost their hunger to win in international events. It was shocking to see Pakistan lose to India in squash, a sport in which Pakistanis were world champion at a time when most of India had not even heard of it.
And the there is the 10-2 loss to India in hockey, another sport in which Pakistan was good once upon a time.

LOL at this. I have been to Karachi, Lahore and few other parts in Pakistan. Most in Sindh look exactly like people in western part of India. Punjabis look mostly Indian Punjabis. These two constitute something like 80% of Pakistan.. Those who are in West look are more like Afghan and Iranians. Afghan's have done better by the way having higher number of medals and now assured of one more in Cricket. Pakistanis are still having this mentality and having delusions that they are some higher race. Your higher race has the highest rate of diabetes and one of hte worst stunting rates in the world. Fix your house before laughing at others. We are atleast making progress. India has been improving their medal tally in last three Asian games. Pak is still stuck in 90s.. Even in the games Pak used to dominate, like Hockey and Squash, Indians have overtaken and won medals..

Pakistan will finish Asian Games without a gold medal, it will also finish with fewer medals than Afghanistan. Who's responsible for such a terrible result?

Yeah, I have followed them. But this was special. I have never seen so many goals conceded by Pakistan. This just be our biggest win. Pakistanis didn't even look like they are capable of competing
After 1996 apparently, India never lost to Pakistan ( as per an Indian journalist, I have not verified the claim)

Not really. May be in specific situations. There used to be series between India and Pak right until 2006/07 and Pak won at last four or five of them if I am not wrong. Last time that bilateral was won by India was sometime in 80s. India certainly have been the better team in last 10 years. India is top five consistently and Pak is not even top ten.

For the first time ever, India hits a ton in the medal tally with 25 gold, 35 silver and 40 bronze and more in the pipeline. Great achievement!

Looks like tall and strong Pakistanis could do zilch here. Another humiliation handed out today where "puny" Bangladeshis have beaten the strong, tall, janasheen and janbaaz pakistani players for bronze medal. The only sport where Pakistan is semi decent at, there also no medal and finish 4th after India/Afghanistan/Bangladesh.
Chullu bhar paani mein doob jane wali baat hai.

100+ medals.. What an achievement.
This was a sachi pak saaf qaum like Bharat does... Sets a target, works towards it diligently ignoring naysayers and
then achieves the target. We set a target of 100 medals as a nation.. and target achieved. Thank You Modi Ji for this experience. Congrats @cricketjoshila @Rajdeep @Itachi @Napa and other Indian brothers on the forum. Jai Hind.... Jai Bharat.

Just watching men's kabbadi final. Have to admit officials almost robbed Iran of a gold medal.

These kabbadi players play leagues day in and out, still finding it difficult to defeat Iran and Chinese Taipei ?

And to top it all, behaving like total goons. What a shame.

Men's kabaddi final Suspended. What a shame. Pawan and that Indian coach simply acting like goons and refusing to accept any decision which is against them.

Even if they win gold I hope they are banned.

Really? the rules say other wise, thats what the commies said, if the rules were upheld, we'd have won. I do not claim to be knowing all the rules of Kabaddi. But typically your observation is one sided, understandable. The Iranian gang was'nt showering flowers either and you did'nt bother commenting on this aspect.
And whilst you have taken the name of Chinese Taipei - yes, amongst all the Kabbaddi nations- these guys are the most improved, on the scoreboard - we defeated them - in both genders - but yeah - hats off to Chinese Taipei - in your haste of putting the boot in for the one team -at least give praise to CT and to the two teams playing the finals! Cheers and peace.

Indians in general are shorter and more puny looking than Pakistanis. Pakistanis are more athletic and more powerful people. It is a pity that in spite of this Pakistan is so far below.
This kind of thinking is the reason Pakistan has been reduced to a one sport country. Firstly, not all games at the Asian Games are related to height be it shooting, archery, chess, cricket, equestrian, bridge etc. Secondly, Chinese and japanese are more shorter but are leading the medals table. Its all about the talent and the support the talent gets. Neeraj Chopra is shorter than Nadeem but has won every time the two have faced off. Its because Neeraj has a better technique than Arshad although teh latter is taller and muscular than Neeraj.

Men's kabaddi final Suspended. What a shame. Pawan and that Indian coach simply acting like goons and refusing to accept any decision which is against them.

Even if they win gold I hope they are banned.
Breakdown of what exactly happened
  1. With just over a minute remaining in the match, Pawan Sehrawat from the Indian team was forced to go in for a do-or-die raid.
  2. During his raid, Pawan went out of bounds without making contact with any Iranian defenders.
  3. In response, Amirhossein Bastami and three other Iranian defenders rushed towards Pawan in an attempt to push him out.
  4. This led to a moment of confusion, as it was unclear whether Pawan had been successfully tackled or not.
  5. Initially, Iran was awarded a point for their efforts to stop Pawan.
  6. However, the Indian contingent, including players and officials, began arguing with the on-court umpire and the TV officials.
  7. After further review and perhaps another referral, the officials decided to award four points to India. It’s mentioned that the number of points could vary depending on the number of players who went out with Pawan.
  8. This decision led to protests from the Iranian team.
  9. The final decision seems to be based on both old and new rules. According to the old rule, India would get four (or possibly five) points, while the new rule would give one point to each team because one of the Iranian defenders (Bastami) went out of the line (self-out).
Why should they be banned !! Why were Iranians protesting even after they got one point.

We have won the Gold !! Kudos to the team for standing there ground.
