Ask about Australia

Who developed the country of Australia?

I mean, when the British convicts were dumped onto the Australian continent, surely those convicts might not be very educated or bright.

So how did those guys manage to develop such beautiful cities with great infrastructure? Who planned and developed cities?

I am kind of jealous :kami

Convicts were the poor Labour. Majority were free British and Irish settlers and the cities were planned by British governors and officials.

Is it realistic to study abroad in Melbourne for Spring semester for the 2015 WC considering that:

-Tickets are probably sold out for some of the games (I want to attend Pakistan games against major teams).
-I plan on taking blow off classes but there might be conflict with my studies.
-I only have money for living expenses thus I would have to work part time while there to pay for tickets/flights for all the games I want to attend if they're not in Canberra, Adelaide or Sydney (even then I have a hunch flying maybe cheaper).

Pakistan Games are in Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Christchurch, and then Semis and Finals in Pak make it.

I heard minimum wage is awesome in Australia but you can only work 20 hours a week. What do you guys think, Is my plan realistic, should I get a job and start saving or is it too wishful?

Just to give you some advice:
- If you are planning to come to Aus on a student visa, most courses take attendance. And it is a condition on your visa that you are present for at least 75 to 80% of your classes. Unless there is a valid reason, you may or may not pass the subject(s)

- If you havent bought tickets yet, most Pak games have been sold out (check ticketek.com.au for availability) India Pak in Adelaide has been sold out, as soon as it was available.

- Maximum of 20 hours a week is also a condition on a student visa. People do go over that, but the penalty for getting caught is deportation. I don't think it is worth the risk of working more. Your studies may be affected as well.

My personal opinion is that you try and save as much as you as well find out all the details before you make the decision to come down.

That's cool. Do they get land and stuff or just the title?

Is it true that if you say "raise up lights" really quickly, it sounds like "razor blades" in an Australian accent?

:ponting

Peter Weir and Steve Waugh for Knighthoods!

Is this because Tony Abbott is an English/Conservative Aussie PM?

Peter Weir and Steve Waugh for Knighthoods!

Is this because Tony Abbott is an English/Conservative Aussie PM?

Probably. Though I like the move. The Companion of the Order of Australia is directly inherited from Britain anyway so why not have our own Order of Knights like New Zealand, Antigua and Barbados?

At the moment only the current Governor General and the incoming Governor General have received Knighthoods which will make a total of 16 people (4 still living) who have ever being Australian Knights or Dames.

I'm not sure if sportspeople will get knighthoods though. Kathy Freeman or Adam Goodes would be the first I'd imagine. Or maybe some older indigenous sportsman like Graeme Farmer.

Be nice to see Richie with a knighthood

Should I visit the great outback? I've been scarred after watching movies like Wolf creek & Mad Max.

How connected is Perth to the rest of the continent?

Hands down best non-mainstream/non tourist places to go camping/hiking/diving?

Any info on the controversy surrounding James Cook not being the 1st European to land on the continent based on some recent archaeological discovery?

Heard there are spiders everywhere? One shouldn't blindly put on their shoes in the dark?

What's the truth to rampant racism in work culture/corporate structure?

Heard there's no Mexican food there? No taco, enchilada, tamales or burritos?

Do native Aussies hate when subcontinental people try to imitate Aussie accent and say the word "mate" every 2 secs? I personally hate those a-holes(just like when British Asians say "innit" )

Are crazy mullah-esque Arab gangs still active in the big cities?

Is it legal to have a pet Kangaroo? What about consumption of Kangaroo meat?

Best beer available?

How integrated are people of Aboriginal descent into mainstream society?

It's nice to visit. Though important to be in a group, stick to the roads and have someone no where you are. As a precaution for getting lost, car breaking down etc

How connected is Perth to the rest of the continent?

Perth's pretty isolated and there are cultural differences which only a Western Australian living East or an Eastern Staters living in Western Australia will notice. It's the most parochial state for a reason.

Hands down best non-mainstream/non tourist places to go camping/hiking/diving?

Kimberley or Tassie. The problem with non tourist places is isolation and getting lost.

Any info on the controversy surrounding James Cook not being the 1st European to land on the continent based on some recent archaeological discovery?

Nobody cares. Everyone here grew up knowing Dirk Hartog discovered Australia well before Cook anyway.

Heard there are spiders everywhere? One shouldn't blindly put on their shoes in the dark?
The problem with shoes is far more prevalent if you live in the outskirts of cities or more country areas.

What's the truth to rampant racism in work culture/corporate structure?
I think it's greatly exaggerated but I'm also a white Australian so I wouldn't really notice. Saqs might be able to help.

Heard there's no Mexican food there? No taco, enchilada, tamales or burritos?
We have Nandos

Do native Aussies hate when subcontinental people try to imitate Aussie accent and say the word "mate" every 2 secs? I personally hate those a-holes(just like when British Asians say "innit" )
Sort of. There are people who know to speak Australian properly (because they live here) and nobody cares if they do it. If it's some random just randomly chucking in 'mate' to try and fit in then it's annoying.
Immitating the accent is also quite annoying because it sounds so fake.

Are crazy mullah-esque Arab gangs still active in the big cities?
Only a Sydney thing. I don't think anywhere else even has a significant Lebanese population.

Is it legal to have a pet Kangaroo? What about consumption of Kangaroo meat?
Don't think so. Kangaroos tastes like venison. You can buy it in most supermarkets.

Best beer available?

Gippsland Gold

How integrated are people of Aboriginal descent into mainstream society?

Not very. There is a real broken cycle of alcohol, substance abuse and unemployment for many families.

Interestingly most indigenous people I know actually prefer whites to multicultural immigrants.

Should I visit the great outback? I've been scarred after watching movies like Wolf creek & Mad Max.

Don't go alone.

How connected is Perth to the rest of the continent?

Different time zone. A good 4-5 hour flight from the eastern seaboard. But doesn't feel too different when you're there.

Hands down best non-mainstream/non tourist places to go camping/hiking/diving?

Any info on the controversy surrounding James Cook not being the 1st European to land on the continent based on some recent archaeological discovery?

True. Whether you're in the city or suburb or country.

What's the truth to rampant racism in work culture/corporate structure?

Different industries have different standards and levels of this.

Heard there's no Mexican food there? No taco, enchilada, tamales or burritos?

Taco Bell counts as Mexican right?

Do native Aussies hate when subcontinental people try to imitate Aussie accent and say the word "mate" every 2 secs? I personally hate those a-holes(just like when British Asians say "innit" )

I think some are amused. Others might think you're trying too hard.

Are crazy mullah-esque Arab gangs still active in the big cities?

Has never been the case as far as I'm aware.

Is it legal to have a pet Kangaroo? What about consumption of Kangaroo meat?

Both are legal.

Best beer available?

The non alcoholic kind ;-)

How integrated are people of Aboriginal descent into mainstream society?

Not very integrated at all. Fault lies on both sides I guess.

Couldn't be stuffed bolding my answers but I've tried to address most of your questions there. Conman can take care of the rest.

British also ruled India. But when they left it was utter filth :yk

Something was not right.

Indians were the vast majority of people living in India even during British Raj. Would have been over 99% at any time. Cities existed prior to British arrival.

British and Irish settles very quickly became 90%+ of the Australian population. No cities existed before British arrival.

You are right.

I wish British had planned some cities with modern infra and proper planning outside of the old existing cities.

We have an Aussie women at our work place. Absolute joy to listen to her accent. I feel like I am listening to Aussie commentary while watching cricket. Full of jokes. Hard to understand at times, but a very nice lady.

What's the opinion on Liberal's move to amend anti racism act 18(c) and allow hate speech?

as in liberal people or the Liberal party ( who are actually right wing) ?

The Liberal party is a big church. It was quite liberal under it's founder in Menzies but the social conservative branch has had it's last two Prime Ministers (though Nelson and Turnbull who also led the Liberal party during that time are certainly not social conservatives).

Someone like Colin Barnett in WA is completely different from Abbott yet both of their politics are consistent with Liberal party bases.

How big is the immigrant population in Aus from countries like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, South Korea etc and Middle East?

Is it rising or declining?

Where are they mostly based?

Subcontinent and middle east on the rise.

Mostly in Melbourne and Sydney.

Should I visit the great outback? I've been scarred after watching movies like Wolf creek & Mad Max.

I spend a lot of time in the outback in very isolated areas all you need is a swag, some of the biggest sky's imaginable. With a GPS travelling in the outback is with a map is no problem.

How connected is Perth to the rest of the continent?

Perth is a very modern city and has all the mod cons and travelling to other cities is just a few hours by plane. A very safe and robust city that offers everything.

Hands down best non-mainstream/non tourist places to go camping/hiking/diving?

Ningaloo reef near Exmouth is one of the best places for diving, if you want to go camping then there are so many great places in Australia that you need to look at why you want to camp. Is it to see wildlife, photography, views, wildflowers, history and so on.

Any info on the controversy surrounding James Cook not being the 1st European to land on the continent based on some recent archaeological discovery?

Cook was the first to settle, several others landed before him.

Heard there are spiders everywhere? One shouldn't blindly put on their shoes in the dark?

I have never checked my shoes for spiders and I spend quite a bit of time in the outback, mostly a myth, yes we have spiders but it only bothers people who are scared of spiders.

What's the truth to rampant racism in work culture/corporate structure?

You always get people that use the race card but if you work hard you get the rewards, those that don't work hard look for excuses.

Heard there's no Mexican food there? No taco, enchilada, tamales or burritos?

I live in a smallish town and we have had a Mexican restaurant for at least 20 years.

Do native Aussies hate when subcontinental people try to imitate Aussie accent and say the word "mate" every 2 secs? I personally hate those a-holes(just like when British Asians say "innit" )

Don't know or care.

Are crazy mullah-esque Arab gangs still active in the big cities?

There are gangs of different races that cause some concern every now and then.

Is it legal to have a pet Kangaroo? What about consumption of Kangaroo meat?

Kangaroo meat is very lean and dark and can be bought, keeping a roo as a pet is not like a dog or cat, they need grazing land and can jump over normal fencing.

Best beer available?

Cold.

How integrated are people of Aboriginal descent into mainstream society?

In some areas they have integrated well and are valuable members of the communities, some smaller communities are now administered by local Aboriginies and they take care of local community care, policing, health, education and many other areas. There is still a lot of education and development to be done but things have improved over the last two decades.

One of the strangest posts I've ever read. What has this got to do with anything?

Sorry for late clarification, I mentioned huge difference between Indian and Pakistani origin populace in Australia only to lower the expectations of posters who wanted Aussie perspective on differences or similarities between Pakistanis and Indians.

Interesting about the cultural issues, do you find similarities between Pakistanis and Indians in their reaction to Aussie culture?

How does the Vegemite taste like?
I read an old article about it getting Halal certification.
Amazon sells a 400 g jar for US$ 21.10, is it about the price in Australia?

How much money is enough for monthly expenditure of a person?

When I was studying in Holland 500 Euro were enough for a single person ( 360 residence , 40 health insurance, rest for food). But standard set by their ministry of education was 975 Euro. So I save 475 Euro/month. :D

Someone should also start Ask about Uk , Usa , India , Pakistan , Uae. it will get us good first hand information. More authentic and reliable than on websites.

Random question. so planning a trip with some of my college buddies in the next year to either Aus/NZ, Eastern Europe or Far eastern asia. Still in the planning phase

How expensive is travelling by air in Oz? Want to visit Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobartas I planning to come Dec 2015. Want a rough idea in my mind on how much to budget for travelling if I do end up making this trip. Also is Perth worth visiting considering its all the way to the other side of Australia whereas these are along the coast and Im guessing the costs would def spring up if I put that into the schedule ? For the same reason NZ is looking unlikely.

Finally, is there a concept of roadtrips along the coast? Might also have a few Aussie friends of my buddy who would be up for it if that's the case though its all very tentative at this point.

The trip is unlikely to happen at this point as its gonna be much more of a financial hit compared to the other options but still good to know and plan. Got a lot of time

Does anyone in Aus care about the International Rules series?? If you dont know what it is you neednt bother answering, as no one here really cares anymore either lol.

Any GAA players play for Perth in the AFL??

PS: Neighbours or Home and Away :yk

In some dodgy areas people who look like foreigners could be scene as easy targets. In general keep your wits about you at night in these suburbs anyway.

I'd imagine it would be pretty strict now and closely tied to skills/uni degrees.

Perth really opens up WA but given time and money constraints stick to the east.
Roadtrips do exist as a concept and if you stick to Victoria and Southern NSW/ACT (so between Melbourne and Sydney) it's pretty doable.

If you use the budget airlines (tiger, jetstar etc) planes aren't particularly expensive and you can get tickets for a few hundred dollars (they might jack up prices around the world cup). Be prepared for no thrills flights but they get you from A to B

People sort of care. It's not as popular as the AFL proper and for years we've selected pretty boring teams.
I'm going to the match this year as we've finally selected a really interesting team full of gun players.

WA has two teams in the AFL - West Coast and Fremantle. West Coast is my team and we recruited a bloke called Paddy Brophy earlier this month. I don't know much about him.

Who is the greatest Australian Actor and Actress ever in your opinion ?

Difficult for me.

I'd go with the really easy- Hogan and Blanchet

I recently just visited Australia (have to admit it is a beautiful country). Had a few questions:

1.) Why didn't I see a lot of cricket grounds there? I was all over Eastern half of Australia and all I could see is a hand full.

2.) Why is property so expensive there? I mean there really isn't shortage of land? Of this question, why is everything so expensive there compared to the US? I mean I know Australia is really far but some of the stuff is ridiculous expensive.

3.) I see that you guys don't have a tipping system, why is this?

Could you please send over some apple custard fruit and Nandos lol

1. I think there are a lot of cricket grounds. I guess most of them aren't obviously cricket grounds because they're just ovals with wickets in the middle and some nets on the side.

2. You're buying pretty big blocks of land, negative gearing (encourages investment properties) and it's only expensive in the major cities.

3. We actually pay people liveable wages so tipping isn't required. It's just something you might do if someone has been extremely helpful and provided great service

Are the Temper Trap big in Australia?? Had some decent songs....

Do you follow NSW in the Sheffield Shield?? I ask because Ireland A player Nick Larkin has been selected and will get his debut on Friday.

Is Aussie wildlife as dangerous as the media portrays??

Finally, are ants common?? I freakin hate them so if they are its highly unlikely I'll visit any time soon :))

I recently just visited Australia (have to admit it is a beautiful country). Had a few questions:

1.) Why didn't I see a lot of cricket grounds there? I was all over Eastern half of Australia and all I could see is a hand full.

There are lots of grounds for cricket, a lot are shared with football and other sports but every small town will have at least one cricket oval.

2.) Why is property so expensive there? I mean there really isn't shortage of land? Of this question, why is everything so expensive there compared to the US? I mean I know Australia is really far but some of the stuff is ridiculous expensive.

Property is expensive because for land to be saleable it must have good road access and generally have all services like water, electricity, telephone, garbage collection and full title so that it is habitable. The further you move from the bigger urban areas the lower the cost of land.

3.) I see that you guys don't have a tipping system, why is this?

We expect to get good service and don't think that you should have to pay extra for it, we also like to know how much we are going to pay for something before we commit to the transaction. Plus all workers must get a minimum wage but there is nothing stopping people from tipping if they believe that they have received service worthy of it.

I don't listen to Temper Trap but I've heard them so I guess they're not small. I'm not the best to ask about that.

Nah. I'm a WA man to the core. We just crushed NSW in the one day cup final. Though I follow most shield games.
NSW are missing like 14 players so Larkin made it into the squad.

Yes.

What ****** water is palmed off as beer in Australia? VB is crap, as for Fosters- understand no red blooded Ozzie would be seen with it?

Emu Export like the poor uni student I've most been.

Probably. Though you spread it thinly. It's not something you have a lot at at once. It's salty and slightly bitter I guess.

What is your average Ozzie food like? Same as Brits/European or really a mix from around the world?

Same as Britain though plenty of Italian, Greek, Chinese, Indian etc restraunts

I saw a few online but any recommendations on Halal and kid friendly restaurants in Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney?

How much does an average pint cost?

Both local and imported brew?

Perth's more expensive than Sydney or Melbourne. ~$10-11 for the cheap locals and a bit more more for the imports and the better stuff

Sorry. I can't even help you with this for Perth
