It occurs to me that the majority of people here either live in Britain or Pakistan and that there aren't many Australian.

I don't know much about other nations and have actually learnt a fair bit from this site. I've also noticed that many people similarly don't have a great understanding about Australia.

So if anyone has any questions about Australia please go ahead and ask. I'd also welcome people like OzGod and Saqs answering questions if they choose to.

Thanks for this thread. Helpful.

* How much will it cost if I want to get Matt Toomua kidnapped? Thanks in advance!

*Joking!*

Given Australian Rugby Union finances you'll probably be able to purchase him in a clearance sale soon

:)) I love how Aussies eat the 'national symbolic' animals on their coat of arms.

Convict - I'd like to ask you this - how did the phrase "yeah nah" get so popular and why is it so quintissentially Australian?

This thread is awesome already.

My next question to Convict is - why isn't Warwick Todd a national icon?

Australia excels at a lot of sports. Almost every sport has had a standout Australian at one point of time.

Why are they mediocre in football (soccer)?

Sorry mate, but I will be doing more asking than answering in this thread it seems:

1. How has the Lillee/Thommo legacy continued so far down the track in the likes of Johnson/Tait?
2. Who is the most beloved cricketer in Aus after Bradman?
3. Is it true that the Indigineous people have hundreds of languages between them?
4. Do you think the 'boat people' situation will ever get fixed?

Lack of European immigrant influence and funding.

This is slowly changing, and you'll most likely see Australia start to compete with the likes of Japan etc. at a high level in the mid-term future as more second and third generation Europeans are raised in Aus.

We're already beginning to see talent attraction happening with the likes of Del Piero joining the 'A-League'.

I reckon it's got a fair bit to do with the AFL and the NRL. Pretty much after every match the commentators will grab a player

Commie "You played very well today and dragged the team over the line"
Player "yeah nah mate. It was a team effort. The boys dug in hard and came up with the goods"

or
Commie "You beat Melbourne by 186 points today. They were pretty bad weren't they"
Player "yeah nah mate. They tried hard but the boys dug in hard and came up with the goods"

This thread is awesome already.

My next question to Convict is - why isn't Warwick Todd a national icon?

Not criminal enough.

Which is the best city for raising a child?

I'll show my bias and pick Perth. Has great weather, good beaches and plenty of open parklands. Though all of the five major cities (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney) would be some of the best places in the world to raise a family.

Melbourne and Sydney are far more multicultural which is a factor many people here might want to consider. Though all the other major cities have suburbs with pretty significant Desi populations (like Rossmoyne in Perth).

Hahaha, what a reply! On a serious note, all the best to him for his career. Seems like a nice guy. I can easily trust him to keep 'her' happy.

Any good ideas for a honeymoon? I mean which city to stay, what places to visit etc. Just planning for my future.

Because nobody really cares about soccer. It's only really played by the children of European immigrants (Italy, Greece etc).

That is mainly because our own football codes took over and entrenched themselves well before soccer could. Australian Football was actually codified before Soccer was. The Melbourne Football Club (est 1858) is the oldest, still existing professional football club of any code in the world. The Geelong Football Club (est 1859) is the second oldest. Carlton (est 1864) are older than about 99% of teams in the Football League in England.

When there was no tv or internet and it was difficult for immigrants to stay in contact with their homelands so they had to assimilate. Plus before WWII almost all immigrants were from Britain and Ireland and because they weren't even 'foreigners' (until about the 60s most Australians still considered themselves British) they didn't cling to parts of their home culture. This is why Irish Catholics in Australia took up cricket whilst they rejected it over in the UK and Ireland.

Later immigrants from Italy, Greece etc formed soccer clubs where they used to hang around with other people who immigrated from the same country.

I doubt we'll ever be good at soccer. It's culturally irrelevant to Australia and second and third generation immigrants are taking up rugby league and Australian Football anyway.

1. Australians love their fast bowlers to have plenty of mongrel and to be aggressive. Lillee and Thommo are still the epitome of that ideal and Johnson (and broken ****ing arms) has brought it to a new generation.
2. Almost certainly Allan Border. Interestingly for a while Clarke was probably the most disliked high profile cricketer ever. Though that has changed, especially after this summer.
3. Thousands I believe.
4. Not anytime soon.

Australia used to be very provincial a couple of generations ago. It seems to have become a lot more cosmopolitan since then, would you agree? Is that a good thing in your view?

What exactly are you interested in?

Visting cities (Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra for monuments and cultural things) or viewing nature?

We don't really have many mountains. We do have many trekking area but they are mostly trekking through bushland and nature. The bibbulmun track in WA is pretty famous.

Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra are very cosmopolitan.

Country Australia is still very provincial and the other major cities like Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide are probably both provincial and sort of cosmopolitan if that makes sense?

I do like visiting Melbourne and Sydney but I'm far more comfortable living in Perth. And in many ways I like the old relaxed, laidback and casual life in Perth and in the country.

The multiculturalism and immigration has been far more positive than not.

Why on earth is that abomination known as the AFL so popular?

Just to go back to this. The crow is the state emblem of South Australia and appears on their flag. And of course, South Australian are colloquially known as croweaters.

Though Western Australians would never dream of eating their black swans

Nature - sounds more romantic. So yeah, nature.....

Nature - sounds more romantic. So yeah, nature.....

Tasmania has some very nice places. It's also green and not humid which is great.

Queensland of course has the great barrier reef. Kakadu National Park near Darwin is great and Broome in Western Australia is also a pretty good place to go.

What do you guys think about immigrants? do you think they are adding up any value to Australia or you fear it will end up messing it like England did with multicultural nonsense.? Honest answer please

Do you all speak like Alf Stewart?

What quality of Indians do Aussies dislike most?

Have you ever beaten up an Indian Student? If yes, was it pleasurable?

I think that immigration has helped Australia. Parts of it seem very annoying but those parts are normally pushed by inner city white Australians and never by actual immigrants who are always embarassed by those sort of things.

I think the problem with England's multiculturalism (though again I don't no much about England) is that immigration is centred around certain areas. It seems to me that some places become not only immigrant majority but majority of a certain immigrant group and the unfortunate side effect of this is that there is little mixing and understanding between the immigrants and the locals and the differences between groups are highlighted.

Over here in Australia yes you do get areas with far more immigrants but the schools themselves are very multicultural. For instance my schools were majority anglo-celt but we had Indians, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, South Africans, Chinese, Malaysians, Singaporeans, Italians, Greeks, Croatians etc. So there is plenty of mixing and socialising and the similarities between groups are highlighted.

It probably also helps that there is no single immigrant group (bar Poms) that really makes up a significant proportion of the population.

Do you all speak like Alf Stewart?

Have you ever beaten up an Indian Student? If yes, was it pleasurable?

Far more common than people would expect but yeah those videos are taking the Mick a bit.

I think the main cultural difference is that Australians are quite blunt and often make humour using mockery or aggression. Anyone who grew up in Australia takes it as it is and doesn't take offence.

India has a very different culture and naturally they can find Australians to be too blunt or offensive. And that creates a cycle where some Australians think that Indians look for excuses to claim offence.

But people get used to it quickly.

Nah I haven't. I have gotten into a fight with a 2nd gen student in a footy match though. He started it. I finished it.

Interesting about the cultural issues, do you find similarities between Pakistanis and Indians in their reaction to Aussie culture?

I have seen the program border control, it seems like alot of illigial workers want to work in Australia,, what is the average pay in Australia?

1. How is Southern Queensland? (For foreignors, chilling etc)

2. An Indian associate claimed he experienced racism from Australian women. Does this happen or is he just horrible at picking up girls?

3. How difficult is it to find a decent job in Australia? Does it make a big difference if you're from out of the country?

4. What's university life like in Australia? Is it pretty much like the so called 'Western experience' or does it differ much? What is the defining factor?

Great thread btw...

How is recent rise in rankings of Australian universities(mostly engineering) in 'popular rankings lists' is viewed among Australian students like will Australian students prefer local Top university over "prestigious"/ famous US one for graduate studies(bachelors onward) , even though there is not much difference b/w two in ranking ? (considering there are no personal issues).

What would the job opportunities be for a (newly graduated) lawyer down under and what would the starting salary be expected to be? (yeah answer that lol)

Can you deport Hamish and Andy and strip them if their citizenship so we in in UK can take them?

Are the majority of streets/roads like Ramsey Street?

i'l ask a genuine question....

how much spread racism in australia?

i thought it was the worst in eastern europe. but going by media, australia is the worst....

how far it is true?

if i am visiting, which places i should avoid for safety.

I can only answer this question.

1. Not good.
2. $40-50k max. Stay in England.

How rascist are the aussies..I hear they dont like the Poms much and arent afraid to air it in public..also I hear theres plenty of anti Muslim hate going on nowadays..is this true or just a typical british stereotype??

Aussies are very upfront and come across slightly passive aggressive to outsiders, and yes they hate Poms. There's a lot of hubbub around asylum seekers atm and that's effectively given a microphone to all the rednecks out here to voice their opinion about sending them back to where they came from. That's also exemplified the anti-Islam thing but I don't think it's any worse than anything you'd find in the UK. Everyone has their fair share of nutters, the average Australian is the best kind of person you're likely to meet.

How much was the Australian character shaped by the battle of Suvla Bay in 1915?

I read that the Australian troops weren't the diggers of legend but mainly city boys who were first-generation expats.

Yes I realised this going into my final year of law :misbah_old

Time to become a cricketer :zoni

Is cricket a dying sport in Aus?

Where do you see cricket popularity in say 20 years?

Surprised to see Kangaroo is feasted upon.

they are too many of them, im not making that up

I used to wonder why they would cull them , then a whole damn group of them decided to pounce on my car while i was driving

Worst time to be a Law Grad

people who do straight Law are screwed

Interesting about the cultural issues, do you find similarities between Pakistanis and Indians in their reaction to Aussie culture?

Pretty similar. Pakistanis don't react to Tendulkar baiting though. Instead they laugh and agree.

I have seen the program border control, it seems like alot of illigial workers want to work in Australia,, what is the average pay in Australia?

Which is your favorite city,, other than u live it.. What is the best aussies dish we asian can it???

The average pay is pretty high?
Minimum hourly wage is about $15 but almost all adults earn at least $20. Average full time male wage is over $60,000 in every state and over $70,000 in WA.

My favourite city outside of Perth is Melbourne I guess. I like to visit to watch football matches.

Do you all ride kangaroos to school?

The loosening of tariffs and trade protections have led to Japanese car makers supplanting the Roo. According to my father emus were more reliable back in the day.

Queensland has a reputation but there wouldn't be any major issues in Brisbane that wouldn't exist in any major city in Europe or America. Rural Queensland is different. But most of the 'racists' in rural QLD and WA are more ignorant than malicious.

The job market is probably getting tougher over the last few years. Skilled Professional immigrants or skilled trades people (plumbers, electricians etc) don't have difficulties though.

Most university students actually go to university in their home city so it's not really like elsewhere. So it's a more a period of your life where you're young, don't have much responsibility, have plenty of free time and actually have freedom.

The Sandstone universities (ANU, Melb Uni, Monash, Sydney Uni, University of NSW, Adelaide University, University of WA and the main university of Brisbane) do have a bit more prestige.

Law would be pretty hard actually. I've heard that the unis are producing way too many lawyers. I'd expect graduate wages to be roughly $50 to $60 thousand a year if you get into a proper law firm. Though that will end up pushing $70k within a few years.

Many lawyers just end up setting house sales and stuff.

Australia would be probably be better than Western Europe in terms of safety. Australia copes a worse rep because we're blunt and people haven't really embraced political correctness. Major racial abuse isn't common.

Someone like Saqs might be able to explain better. I'm a white anglo-celt so there might by a lot I miss.

You won't be in any physical danger though.

We give the Poms a lot of grief but to be honest nobody dislikes them. To be honest the insults and complaints about Poms are pretty affectionate. Along with Ireland and New Zealand, Britain is a country that Australians feel a lot of kinship and brotherhood with.

Britain is like the older brother who acts like he's better than you but in the end is still your older brother.

To be honest from what I hear about Europe the anti Muslim hate is less in Australia. There is plenty of ignorance and people may privately mutter stuff but in the end I don't think it's actually something anyone really cares too much about.

Aussies are very upfront and come across slightly passive aggressive to outsiders, and yes they hate Poms. Pretty much this. Apart from us hating the Poms. We say the same the stuff about the Poms as we say about the other states- get a Western Australian talking about anyone living east of the Nullabor for instance.

How much was the Australian character shaped by the battle of Suvla Bay in 1915?

I read that the Australian troops weren't the diggers of legend but mainly city boys who were first-generation expats.

About 39% of the Australian adult male population fought in WWI (all volunteers because we only ever had conscription in Vietnam) and given our demographics it's probably true that most soldiers were from the cities. The digger of legend over here is the young 16-21 year old kid who ran off to fight for the empire for fun and glory. The soldiers called themselves '6 bob a day tourists'. I think we had the highest casualty and death rates (from combatants) of any army in the war.

Australia actually had more deaths in WWI than in WWII despite a large population in WWII and part of WWII actually happening near Australia.

Gallipolli and ANZAC Day hold a pretty big place in Australian national identity.
And interesting fact is that it was a complete disaster so the government use to media to try and turn into a legend to prevent the population getting dispirited. And that's how Sir Keith Murdoch made his mark and a hundred years later his son dominates Western media.

Is there really a problem of animals in Australia? Like bugs and spiders in the house?

Yeah but spiders are pretty harmless.

Is cricket a dying sport in Aus?

Where do you see cricket popularity in say 20 years?

Nope. It will always be the main summer sport and the second sport in every state and territory. Also dominates country Australia which is the lifeblood of Australian sport.

they are too many of them, im not making that up

I used to wonder why they would cull them , then a whole damn group of them decided to pounce on my car while i was driving

It's amazing in rural Australia. Some of the trainlines in the mining areas are littered with kangaroos corpses.

I can't really help you on PHD scholarships.

The cost of living is pretty expensive. You'll almost certainly have to share a house with other students.

Some of the more likely part time jobs would be working at supermarkets, retails, night fill (stacking shelves), tutoring university students (especially if you are a PHD student), working at fast food outlets etc.

The pay is pretty decent.

This might be a useful link

http://www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/about/accommodation/costs

Perth would be more expensive than Melbourne and roughly the same as Sydney (cheaper rent but more expensive food).
Adelaide would be the cheapest of the main cities.

Hourly wages for most of these jobs would maybe be $18-$20 for most uni students. Though Perth is slightly higher than other major cities.

How do you get to barangaroo?
kudos to you if you know the funny pic

What is a drongo?

How many times a week do you cook shrimp on a bbq?

Do you wear a hat with little corks on strings?

Does the water in the toilet go anti-clockwise when you flush?

Yes

My father is a vet, there's not really a shortage but it's a good market for graduates. If your degree has been completed overseas it's extremely tough to get accreditation here.

Can you differentiate between who is Indian and who is Pakistani? How?

This thread will be tough to keep up with Convict. You'll struggle answering all of these questions.

Any good ideas for a honeymoon? I mean which city to stay, what places to visit etc. Just planning for my future.

Whose honeymoon are you planning to hijack?

In all seriousness, start up in the Gold Coast, take a road trip down to Sydney (you must see the most beautiful harbour in the world), and then go to Melbourne, and fly to Tasmania.

There are nice beaches practically in every major city.

Convict, what's the most remote place you've been to?

As part of work, I visited Tennant Creek. That was quite an experience.

The second most remote place I've been to is probably Geraldton. Beautiful town.

Racism is blown out of proportion in Aus.

Just stick to the big cities, and don't go around the city alone at crazy hours of the night when most people are leaving pubs a bit intoxicated and you will be fine.

How would you define Australia's health system, especially for children? I ask this because my Uncle lives in Sydney and he is facing a lot of issues with his son's treatment. He is 8-9 years old. He is very upset about the treatment his son has been receiving.

Why do many outsiders regard Australia as one of the most hostile countries for immigrants, mostly non-white?

"Although the number of veterinarians has been increasing, there are still not enough to meet demand. Because of this, veterinarian appears on Immigration New Zealand's long-term skill shortage list. This means the Government is actively encouraging qualified veterinarians from overseas to work in New Zealand.

Also, the Ministry for Primary Industries offers a bonding scheme for newly-qualified veterinarians who are willing to work in areas where veterinarians are most needed. "
