What's new

Australia (511 & 69/2) defeat England (334 & 241) by 8 wickets in the second Ashes Test to go 2-0 up in the 5-match series

While Smith was non-committal on all things selection, he has outlined that he will don 'eye black' tape under his eyes after consulting Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the former West Indies batter who was renowned for wearing them.

The Guyanese left-hander pointed out Smith had not applied them correctly at training this week.

"I actually messaged Shivnarine Chanderpaul and asked him what his thoughts were, whether he wore the chalk or the strips," said Smith.

"He said the strips, and he thinks it blocks out 65 per cent of the glare. He also said, 'I've seen photos – and you're wearing them the wrong way'. So yesterday, I put them on the right way.

"I agree with him. I think it certainly stops the glare. Yeah, I'll be wearing them (in the Test)."

Haha Smith is a such a character. Looking forward to seeing him with Chanderpaul style ‘eye blacks’ for the pink test.

grass shaved off - just 3 mm left as per curator ... should be a decent batting surface !

Maybe a late decision considering England have picked Jacks .

This surface might deteriorate and bring spin into play and Australia might pick Lyon after all

Broadcaster are angry with thes pitches where match is finished in 2 days.

They want test to go atleast in 4th day. They are losing the money with shortened test .

Lyon was always going to play ... check his stats in pink ball cricket !

Lyon only bowled 1 over in the Adelaide pink ball test last year with grass of 6mm length.

Didn't play pink ball Test in West Indies either
Nathan Lyon is the most successful spinner in Pink-Ball Tests. He has taken 43 wickets in 22 innings at an average of at an average of 25.62, an economy of 2.57, and a strike rate of 59.6.

Gazz is'nt bad with the pink ball has a pretty decent record especially at adelaide, but yeah they only bowled 2 overs from him in the perth where he has an amazing record so I don't know

Point is not about comparing him with other spinners. Australia will be tempted to play an extra seam allrounder (Webster) if there was more grass for a pink ball Test.

Lyon may be the best spinner but all the Aussie seamers average 18 and less in pink ball Tests. There's even no need for a specialist spinner if you can play

Boland
Starc
Cummins
Webster
Green

They can bowl out teams very quickly and still have batting until #8.

But the fact that they are cutting the grass until 3mm suggests that they are not opting for that route.

It is likely going to be 2-0. :inti

England don't have the batting depth to do well in Australia. Bazball is unlikely to work in Australia.

The pitches in Australia have been bowling-friendly for a couple of seasons now, so if you are coming out and playing your traditional brand of BrainfreezeBall then there is something wrong with your brain.

Don't respect the conditions and before you know it, you will be buried under the weight of your own bad decisions.

Criminal behaviour from Australian selectors to neglect Webster :ssmith

England have won the toss and have opted to bat

Teams:

England
(Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes(c), Jamie Smith(w), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer

Australia (Playing XI): Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith(c), Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey(w), Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett

Intresting team selection, Australia is going with all out pace attack while England is playing with willJack's. Anyway will Jack's is a batting allrounder.

:kp

England are batting first.

Would be interesting to see how they approach Bazball against a moving pink ball under the floodlights.

Neser's bowling reminds me of Pakistan's Musa bowling in Australia, which is complete grabage :kp

Apart from Starc spell, Australia bowling looks Very ordinary . They will struggle once Starc, Cummins and Hazelwood retire after current WTC cycle

'We're going to move on': Ben Stokes caught in tense exchange with reporter over E-scooter criticism

England captain Ben Stokes was caught in an awkward exchange with a reporter after he and multiple other players copped criticism over an off-field gaffe.

The skipper was photographed with Jamie Smith and Mark Wood riding E-scooters without helmets in Brisbane, causing some backlash among locals.

The act would usually carry a $166 fine under the state's road rules, but Queensland Police have since confirmed the cricket stars would escape sanction.

However, that didn't stop the topic being raised during Stokes' pre-game media address on Wednesday evening ahead of the second Test at the Gabba.

The champion all-rounder asked if he 'acknowledged it was the wrong thing to do' and gave a rather blunt response.

"Next time we're on a scooter, we will wear helmets," Stokes replied.

He was then asked a follow-up question as to whether Queenslanders were owed an apology, to which Stokes gave the exact same response.

The reporter continued to pepper Stokes over the incident.

"Are you not going to make any further comment about this, other than what you've just said?" she said.

England's media manager then quickly intervened.

"No, we're going to move on," he said from behind Stokes.

The 34-year-old had spoken about the criticism to the BBC earlier on Wednesday, with a headline in News Corp outlets labelling Stokes and his teammates as "Pommy Idiots".

"If they think it is going to stop us enjoying this country when we have time off then it is not going to do that," he said.

"Australia is the best country to tour away from cricket. There are so many things to do.

"You can go out and about and see things that only Australia has to offer, great golf courses, coffee shops and easy places to have lunch.

"We are human. We need to enjoy countries when we get the opportunity because we live in England where it is miserable, freezing cold and dark at 4pm."

Stokes will lead the visitors into a must-win pink-ball clash at the Gabba, which begins at 3pm AEDT on Thursday afternoon.

This is the best chance for Joe Root to hit a 100. Aus line-up without Hazelwood and Cummins and he is looking solid so far..

Crawley is looking in good touch and this pitch is a belter. England need to score as many runs before last session :kp
It's an easy pitch after first 10 overs of pink ball movement. Only 3 mm grass. We will see whether it was justified dropping Lyon or not.

Zak Crawley strike rate by length

Fuller than 7m - 132

Shorter than 7 m - 22

Australia have overpitched a bit too much yet again

Wow Crawley killing the Aussies. These 2 new kids Aus selected both of them look like garbage medium pacers.. looks like Mitch is the only bowler Aus has in this test match...😆😆

Aus is in major trouble here if these 2 young medium pacers will have to bear most of the load...

Root is finally scoring a century in australia against poor Australian attacks. :klopp ;kp

50 for Root, well played, this is his best chance to get a 100, Aus bowling is weak as p_iss in this match...

England's beat chance to beat Australia. They could have won the 1st test had not been for the hare kiri in 2nd session on 2nd day.

Wannabe Australia fan hyped green bowling too much. He is nothing special, although batting is alright.

He was wicketless against India in 2020-21 BGT series after playing entire series.

:kp

The King of the Pink ball is back into the attack, says Isa Guha on air...and he strikes immediately. Brooks gone.

Australia attack is all about Starc . England need to negotiate him and cashed on other bowlers

:kp

Great innings from the man soon to be top test run scorer of all time !

No need to get very excited. Aim bigger in life

:kp
Raju , his love for Root is of same intensity as yours for Modi .
on topic ,fFolks , can AUS take 4 wickets in final session ? 350 appears to be par atm .

In absence of Lyon , can't see these guys bowling 80+ overs today .
203/4 in 49.1

Excellent from England. In General have batted sensibly. Fingers crossed, Root gets the Monkey of his back and gets the Ton. Far to good of a player not to.

I reckon a score 400+ puts England in complete Control.

this session , 14 runs in 7 overs ... hope these 2 are not planning to '' see off '' the entire session & attack tomorrow morning !!!
210/4
