Australia beat India in final to win Champions Trophy hockey tournament [Update Post #126]

I truly wonder if Pakistan will be good at any other sport other than cricket in the coming future. Hockey, squash, badminton etc. were some of the sports where we excelled at in the past. Seems like the glory days have gone.

It can rise if the govt makes an effort and helps the federation. Hockey can rise again as we have a deep deep love and tradition for the game. But our traitorous politicians and others have destroyed the game..it can be brought back with some effort..

Argentina 1-1 Pakistan at Half-time.

Our team's fitness level is poor. We usually play well in the fast quarter and then become slower as the game progresses. Argentina might score two three more in the 2nd half.

A great 4-1 victory for Pakistan against Argentina! Huge result!

Great day for Pakistan hockey as we defeated current olympic champions. We could have scored 2 or 3 more at the end but this is a huge win and will boost our team's morale.

This is the kind of performance I was expecting from Pakistan after the aberration against India, the game that Pakistan should have at least drawn if not won. Same was the cause against Aussies, we really gave them a run for their money however the results were not there to show. The game against Dutch was a real disappointment.. All in all a good tournament for the boys and there is a lot to like about this time however we need to really work in our conversion. Lot of chances missed in all 4 games ..

was not able to watch but very happy with the result good stuff boys in green, if i am not mistaken Argentina like ranked 3rd in the world, so very nice win.

Must have been Argentinian second eleven... no way in hell we beat them 4-1. I find it hard to believe. If it was indeed their main side then this is an awesome achievement. I only saw half of the India match and we were playing spectacular hockey but we still lost 4-0 against them, 2-1 against Aus and 4-0 against Ned.

Hi ,yes we need to win for sure but Ned is hard to win against,a draw won't cut coz Ned will defn win next one.

Nah. A draw would be sufficient. We are a point ahead of Netherlands. So a draw would enable us to make it to the finals.

The 4th team has only 4 points, so they are out of contention.

Pakistan play Belgium today. I don't think Pakistan can make the final though :(

wow what a result..I just want a few wins and some good performances in this tournament..

Really hoping the new govt helps our Hockey..we need a good hockey team to galvanise the country further!!

Imagine if we start focusing on hockey and also football. Pakistan would be there and there abouts in three biggest team sports.

We can definitely regain our lost glory in hockey within a few years because of abundance of talent and vast popularity of the sport in the rural areas

2 quick goals for Belgium

2-4

I think it is fitness issue we let in 2 goals against Ind as well in the fourth quarter and late goal against Aus in the fourth quarter. Now let in 2 goals against Bel in fourth quarter.

Even though the results may not show, I think this is the best Pakistan have played in a long time, they are definitely making some progress under the new coach. They must trust the process and be patient, results will follow the process if they persevere.

That's now coz ned lost..till yesterday I thought NED would win.

The caretaker government has taken notice of the disappointing performance by the Pakistan hockey team in the ongoing Champions Trophy in Breda, Netherlands.

Pakistan lost four of their five games in the last edition of the Champions Trophy, after being thrashed by India in the opening game by 4-0, followed by back to back defeats, 2-1 against Australia and a 4-0 loss to hosts Netherlands.

The green shirts gained some momentum when they beat second-placed Argentina 4-1 but were kicked out of the medal's race after losing 4-2 to Belgium.

According to sources, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has taken notice of the dismal performance by the team and has demanded an explanation from the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

The caretaker government has also stopped the payment of the special grant of Rs200 million to PHF which former prime minister Shahid Kahqan Abbasi had approved of.

Big game for India today. Will be difficult, but if they can get to the finals, we would have made it to the CT finals twice in a row. Definite improvement there.

Why is the government stopping their money . In the end PHF will have no money to pay to the coaching staff and to participate in the tournaments and team will be back to square one.

Indian hockey is on its way up.Good performance against these top teams consistently is a very good sign.

There was a time during K P S Gill's tenure when he was taking draconian steps that shook the morale of players and took the game down.

Yeah. These steps will badly impact morale of players.

In fact they should reward these players for the way they have performed against these top teams in the world. Losing 4-0 to India and Netherlands and 4-2 against Belgium doesnt show it in scoreline. These are the teams who know how to bounce back in pressure but if these guys would have watched the game and would have had any knowledge of game, they would know that they performed extremely good.

India has improved a lot.

Its been slow and steady. From not qualifying for 2008 olympics, to coming last in 2012 olympics, we have been improving a bit along the way.

We are still a long way to before we come medal contenders at the WC and the olympics. Hockey definitely needs to become a better paid sport, like the others have become in the last few years.

Pakistan playing Belgium today - can we avoid the wooden spoon?

Pakistan v Belgium ends in draw. 2-2 but Belgium won 2-1 on Penalties

Indian hockey team missed a golden chance to lift the Champions Trophy title as they went down 1-3 to Australia in the penalty shootout of the final on Sunday. The scores were level 1-1 in regulation time.

Only Manpreet Singh could score in the penalty shootout for India as Sardar Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Lalit Upadhyay failed in their task. Australia on the other hand scored through Aran Zalewski, Jeremy Edwards and Daniel Beale. Mathew Swann and Craig Tom missed for Australia as they lifted the title for the second straight time.

It was a keenly-contested battle between the two finalists of last edition but once again Australia came out on top in the shoot-out to clinch their 15th Champions Trophy title.

India, however, had to contend with a consecutive runners-up finish after failing to get past the Kookaburras in what was the 37th and final edition of the tournament.

Australia took the lead in the 24th minute through a penalty corner conversion by Blake Govers, but India drew parity in the 42nd minute through a field strike by young Vivek Sagar Prasad.

A 1-1 scoreline was what the teams could manage in the regulation time and like last year, the final went into the shoot-off.

Australia came out on top in the battle of nerves, courtesy goalkeeper Tyler Lovell, who evicted three saves to turn out to be the hero.

Hosts Netherlands clinched the bronze medal defeating Olympic champions Argentina 2-0 in the third-fourth place play-off match earlier in the day.

This is a repeat of last year, created so many chances but lost to ozs through penalties again. The big tournament win continues to elude us

you played like champions. amazing performance, actually it was Indian team who deserved to win imo.

Created so many chances in the match only to lose the penalty shootout. Unlucky, but still very happy with the tournament. Team exceeded expectations.

Yes it did indeed. Good show and you deserved to win today but you need to prepare for some humiliation now as Pakistan is going to beat you in Asian games. :P

Thanks!

It was indeed an encouraging performance. I remember once Astroturf was introduced the South Asian teams could simply not compete because the Australians, Dutch, and even the Koreans were too fit and too fast for us. Good to see that we are now on almost equal terms with the physically most fit and strong team, that is Australia.

Australia has fantastic athletes, and it is not easy to keep up with them. There is a reason why they win so many gold medals in the Olympics swimming events. We have to work very hard to keep up with the Aussies in any sport.

Our team is improving. Your comment regarding them retiring was ignorant.

we need to rebuild our domestic structure and put money back into the game..it wont take long and there is plenty of talent around..but alas..
