Whenever Afghanistan and Australia face off, one memory instantly comes to mind - Glenn Maxwell’s mind-blowing double hundred in the 2023 ODI World Cup, a knock that single-handedly shattered Afghan hopes. Now, the stakes are just as high, with a semi-final spot on the line. Afghanistan come into this game brimming with confidence after a thrilling win over England, making it two ICC ODI tournament victories against them in a row. Ibrahim Zadran was the hero last time, smashing a sensational 177, while his opening partner Rahmanullah Gurbaz is due for a big knock, perhaps he’s saving it for the Aussies. The experienced Rahmat Shah adds stability, while skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi brings resilience to the middle order. All-rounders Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai have been crucial, with Omarzai picking up a match-winning five-wicket haul against England. Add to that Gulbadin Naib, Afghanistan’s man for the big moments, and they have a well-rounded squad ready for battle. But Afghanistan’s biggest weapon? Spin. Rashid Khan remains the ultimate game-changer, while Noor Ahmad’s rise makes their attack even deadlier. Fazalhaq Farooqi leads the pace attack but will need to step up against a strong Australian batting lineup. Afghanistan know what’s at stake - a win keeps their dream alive, and against Australia, the hunger for revenge is even greater. Australia, on the other hand, pulled off a stunning chase against England in their opener, with Josh Inglis leading the charge with a brilliant century.

Matthew Short and Marnus Labuschagne chipped in as well, but the real firepower lies with Travis Head and skipper Steve Smith. If these two find their rhythm, Australia’s batting becomes a juggernaut. Alex Carey has been in red-hot form, while Maxwell, the tormentor of Afghanistan, would love to haunt them once again with his sheer power hitting. However, their bowling lineup is not at full strength, missing some key names. Spencer Johnson has big shoes to fill in Mitchell Starc’s absence, while Nathan Ellis will be crucial with his clever variations. Ben Dwarshuis provides solid support, but it’s Adam Zampa who holds the key in the middle overs with his accurate spin bowling, with Short, Maxwell, and Labuschagne also able to contribute with the ball. If Australia want an extra spin option, Tanveer Sangha could come into play. Australia don’t like leaving their fate in the hands of others, they always find a way to get the job done in ICC tournaments. A win here will seal their place in the semi-finals, but a loss could throw them into uncertainty. Can Afghanistan rise to the occasion and take down the mighty Aussies, or will Australia once again crush their dreams? We’re about to witness a battle for survival, and it promises to be an absolute thriller!

Marnus Labuschagne- Australia pre-match press conference, 27 Feb '25
[Reporter:]

How is your personal preparation and the preparation of Australia for a very, very important match tomorrow?

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

I think most of our preparation sort of came before the tournament. Obviously we've had a training rain out and then the game rain out against South Africa and our training now is indoors. So, the boys have played a lot. We're ready to go. I think, obviously when you come to these tournaments, you have to be prepared to play. We've had obviously a game off and our preparation has been altered, but we'll be ready to go tomorrow.

[Reporter:]

Australia has refused bilateral series with Afghanistan on what it called a principle stance after restrictions on girls in sports. So, tomorrow's game is still taking place. So how does it feel? Do you have any mixed, conflicting feeling? Because that ban is effectively still in place.

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

Yeah, interesting question. Obviously, it's an ICC tournament. And our game, as the schedule came out, we're playing Afghanistan. Personally, for me, which I can speak of, I've got no issues about playing tomorrow. But obviously there has been some stances from us at Cricket Australia in the past. But, we're just focusing on tomorrow where we are playing Afghanistan.

[Reporter:]

Smith in his pre-match press conference had asked his young guns to fire and they did fire against England. What would we expect from the senior guys like Smith and you to perform against Afghanistan in a very crucial match tomorrow?

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

Yeah, I mean, like I said, the way one-day cricket certainly works is we've only had one game so far, so it feels like we're at the clinch part of the tournament and we've only played one game and Josh Inglis played amazingly with Alex Carey through that middle period and there were different parts of the game where different people stood up. I think Matt Short played beautifully at the start and there were different partnerships that really made that game. But going into tomorrow's game, we've all got to be ready to perform. It doesn't matter if you're young or you're a senior player, we've got to find a way to put a good score on the board or if we're chasing the total, make sure we win the game. So, not sure who's going to put their hand up for the big score, but like I said, we've all got to be ready to perform.

[Reporter:]

In yesterday's match, Afghanistan received wonderful support from the crowd, and a large number of Afghan fans are expected tomorrow as well to fill the stadiums. Australia has a very good record of silencing the opposition crowd. Do you believe that tomorrow your team will do the same?

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

It's hard to sort of comment on the result – obviously we’d love to win tomorrow and silence the crowd and put them on, but for us it's all about making sure we stick to our process making sure we really engage in the game, we’re ready to play and whatever gets thrown at us doesn't matter what the situation is - that we come out and perform at our best.

[Reporter:]

Rain is spoiling the party - one match was washed out and tomorrow rain is also expected. Would you like to have a complete match or would you prefer it to be a draw?

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

I think as players you always want to play. Obviously if the whole match rains out I think that means that we go through to the to the semi-finals - but obviously we'd love to be able to win the game tomorrow and finish top in the pool. I think that's something that we want to aim to do and make sure we've won all our matches leading up to the semi-finals. But those things are out of our control, so I will have to make sure we're ready to go tomorrow if it is a shortened fixture - that we're playing against Afghanistan.

[Reporter:]

Everyone in the Afghan team is back in form. Either we talk about their top order, middle order or from the spin especially the pacers yesterday Azmatullah Omarzai have done a fantastic job. What will be Australia’s target - either their top order or their bowling because they have a good spinner especially Rashid and Noor Ahmed and the other pacers too?

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

Well, I mean I think we'll be targeting sort of both assets with the bat and with the ball. I think if we're batting, we’ll be looking to combat their spin through the middle which has been their really strong point. Their pace bowling has been very good in the last few games. Noor Ahmed started really well; they finished off the game really well last night. And then going into their batting - we saw that they've got batters. I think last time – last time we played Afghanistan as well – their top order, they got three hundred and Maxwell played that amazing innings and got us over the line. Different parts of the game we’re going to attack - both so it's just going to have to be -play what's in front of us tomorrow.

[Reporter:]

Some experts still think that this Afghan team are underdogs. So, what would you think? Are Afghans still underdogs or they are now a world class team?

[Marnus Labuschagne:]

Look, I'm not a pundit or someone that deems if they're underdog or not. We're playing Afghanistan and we know how good they are and we know the skill level that they play with, but we're going to make sure we come really well prepared and put a really good performance together.

Hoping rain stays away . Want to see this game . Should be a good one

Hope the match happens. A short tournament. Losing three matches to Rain will become a total farce

What a mouthwatering contest we have here. I wonder if Australia will forfeit this game for the sake of Afghan Girl's Education and Rights.

Changed my DP in support of our cricket team tomorrow 🇦🇫

LOL. If they forfeit, they are out of the tournament.

I don't think they will forfeit. :yk

It’s raining till 3pm in Lahore

Either it’s cut off or very shortened game

Has to be one the worst hosted event in history of cricket.

So much drama prior to start. Host nation plays like a bag of crap. Manages to play 1 game at home and half the tournament is washed out.

If it’s rained out match, we will need England to crush to South Africa which is unlikely.

We must get at least a 20 over game.

No way is Aus losing to Afg. After the last T20 WC loss - can guarantee they will be coming back with a vengeance. FWIW , Eng made so many mistakes in their game and yet it was so close. Very unlikely Aus will make the same errors twice.

How did India get one week off between games, and Afghanistan a days break between games?

Who scheduled this?

If you check the schedule pattern, India-NZ should've been tomorrow.

But, ICC decided to put India's game on the last day. I guess it was to protect India in case NRR became a factor.

Blatant protection of Indian interests I guess.

Kya logic. It was done to protect India's NRR when the 2 games yet to be played are from the other group. :ROFLMAO:

How do you keep outdoing yourself with increasingly stupid posts time and again ? :inti

If the match is washed out due to weather reasons, both teams will gain a point each, which will take Australia to the top of the table with four points and confirm their qualification for the semi-finals. Afghanistan, on the other hand, will have to book their return ticket in such case as they won't be able to surpass South Africa's net run-rate (NRR) despite both teams having three points.

If the rain interruption does not affect the match result, the winner of the match will go through to the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025.

Dear Bhaijaan and Indian posters who should listen to reason like @Rajdeep @jeeteshssaxena

Please understand that Australia is the greatest of all time and while it's one thing to support Your home land and Afghanistan, it's not right to disrespect a nation that made cricket what it is today and ultimately is the phenom of cricket.

If you guys were true indian fans you'd want to face Australia man to man and keep facing them in the future.

Try to understand that these guys deserve just as much if not even respect that indian pr hype machines.

Just like their will never be another kohli, sachin etc, their will never be another Steve smith, Pointing and mcgrath.

As true indian fans, support Australia and face them in a final. They are your rivals now. Their the ones who challenged you in BGT, and took your crowns in 2003 and 2023.

Forgoe Pakistan and forget about Afghanistan for easy points.

Shawn Micheal's never ran away from the undertaker to settle for a retirement match with someone like drew macintyre.

Thanks and bye bye 👋🏻 .

Australia is not easy to beat, Even though, they are missing their premier pace attack but this team knows how to make full use of the available resources. The way they chased against England is something only Australia can do.

Australia is going to finals and Afghanistan is not gonna stop them here.

Indeed.

Australia can never be ruled out in any ICC event even if they are depleted.

Yes but they haven't tested at all . They won against a pathetic England team but rain saved them against South Africa.

:kp

What a let down tournament really. Host getting out early, rain washing out important matches, so many dead rubbers. No excitement. Really didnt expect it

Afghanistan dismantled Australia in world T20. But ODIs allow them to come back. But your fielding has to be top notch against Australia because their fielding will be.

It’s going to be the biggest test of our heart and our fitness level.

Hopefully, this match is not washed out. Bangladesh match getting washed out was a blessing in disguise because nobody wants to watch such a rubbish team. :inti

Afghanistan batsmen are easy on the eye. Not sure who honed their technique. Both Gurbaz and Zadran have nice backlift and great downswing. Very crisp execution of shots. I missed the last match. But saw the highlights. Full of beautiful shots.

Nice piece about Afgahnistan by Jarrod Kimber. Here he is explaining about how Afghanistan players have designated roles and how they play perfectly.

local Lahori girls & boyz - do we get a game today & if yes , how many overs ?
not that bad as it was in Pindi. Let's see

I think this game will be the game of the tournament. Last time both teams meet in an ODI was in WC23 and australia won the thriller, thanks to amazing efforts by maxwell that he played one of the top ODI innings of all time
This game in lahore is gonna be a cracker and afghanistan will try his full efforts to beat australia and they should

Pitch Report: A lot of rain yesterday but the outfield is good. A maximum of 19 degrees today so the conditons are very pleasant. The predicted rainfall is reducing by the minute with a 25 percent chance of rain and there's a nice wind blowing across the stadium. Talking about the dimensions, It's 72m to my left and 63m to my right and 75m down the ground. I'm seeing a very good surface, it's a run-scoring fest, 300 runs on all four occasions have been scored here in this tournament. It's how about captains go about restraining oppositions both in the first innings and the second innings. Omarzai used the back of the length area really well in the last game here and that area will offer help for the seamers, reckon Ian Bishop and Matthew Hayden.

Afghanistan have won the toss and have opted to bat

Australia
(Playing XI): Matthew Short, Travis Head, Steven Smith(c), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey(w), Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson

This Aus pace bowling is very one dimensional (conceeded 351 in the last match) like Eng, with only the one very good leg spinner (Rasheed for Eng and Zampy for Aus).
