What's new

Australia v South Africa | 2nd Test - Day 1| MCG | 26/12/08

Hussey now averages 60.25

P.S. Thankfully, the great Greame Pollock is now once again the holder of the second highest Test batting average after Bradman.

Yeah Hussey is only 6 runs ahead of Tendulkar now. :P

Ponting back up over 57 Bub?

Symonds helpfully throws his wicket away again.

Caught by Kallis off a rank wide ball from Morkel

5/223 adantage Saffers

Symonds gone. South Africa must be not allow the Aussie tail to wag again.

We may see another quality inning from Haddin again to salvage Australia's middle order fumble.

I'll be happy with aussie getting 400 in the first innings. It looks easy batting out there. Although with a bit of luck we could roll them for 350 still.

Haddin looks in very good touch.

But so far it has been South Africa's day, 5 wickets gone for 250 and new ball due in a couple of overs.

Well it's 50/50

You did win the toss again and youi have the runs on the board. But score anything less than 400 and S.A will feel on top.

odds out as 4.75 to 1 for an S.A win and 1.75 for an aussie win. If I'd know i'd def have put a few $ on the saffers.

That must be mostly Aussies betting :)

The Proteas are missing real swing bowlers like Pollock and Charles Langeveldt

Clarke probably got a dressing down from coach since he threw his wicket away twice. He is an inform player. He should capitalize on his form. Probably Australia is playing out time at the beginning itself. I think this approach suits them considering their bowling resources. They need a buffer of 150 runs.

Wow, these last gasp wickets in tests are so vital, just shows how important it is to maintain concentration until the bails are removed.

Australia is slightly losing the plot. If SA racks up a big total once again they will have to play catch up job.

280 for 6 SA is slightly ahead? Since only one side has batted we can't be sure about that.

No but if you told South Africa before play that Australia would bat first and be 6/280 at stumps they would be reasonably happy with that.

Australia will not be happy with the scoreline, you should have seen Ponting's face (he was being interviewed at the time) when Haddin went out.

I think it's been RSA's day. Good effort by them. And the question is can RSA dismiss Australia's tail cheaply tomorrow?

I hope YES.

Australian tail can definatley stick around and caused all sorts of headaches for SA in the last game.

That would do no good for aussies. It will be just delaying an inevitable unless Aussie bowlers do better than Perth test.

Don't froget this is still Australia we are talking about. If the can stick around for another 90 to 100 runs it will be huge. McKenzie is out of sorts so a couple of quick wickets up top can cause a collapse especially since Prince is not playing and don't forget SA tail is quite long.

Huh? Runs are no good in a cricket match?

*points at* 414 :)))

Did you read what I wrote ? Scoring runs and bowling PIES would not help OZ.

Oh OK. Well scoring runs and bowling pies would be better than just bowling pies no?

No they have to beat New Zealand first

Another good day's play Saffer, this is a really good series to watch.

Or how about they beat South Africa ?

Yeah. It couldn't have been more even than today. Aussies tail wags again and they have the advantage. Get bowled out for under 350 and S.A have the slight edge.

Certainly not to India though.

If you beat the current Oz in the series in the standings you will be number 1, but you beat a sorry as* oz side.. We beat the best Oz side of the era at full strength however they molested your sorry as** like there was no tommorow.. Forever will you live under India's shadow!!!!!!!.....

Nice try but no. Nobody beats us at home.

You beat the OZ side in India not Australia.

Well that same Oz side beat Saffies what something like 4-1 and a similar side 3-0 in SA their home ? Sorry dude but we got the saffies under our thumb on this one ;)...

i've been watchin the s.africa attack closely, i think its overated, steyns quality, but yet to show it consistantly on this tour, but morkel looks very ordinary,no movement reminds of garbage harmison, harris well calling him a spinner is devaluing the art

Looking at both attacks one can safely say Sakeb Ul Hasan is better than most of the bowlers from both sides.

Ponting still under 57. Hussey is just enjoying his time. One more series and his average will be in the 50's.

Looks like S.A day today. From what i saw from the 1st session the wicket is even paced with decent bounce but overall good for batting. There was some swing early on for Kallis. The S.A bowled pretty poorly this morning but to have Aus 280/6 is pretty good performance. Micheal Clarke has to some how get the Aussies over the 350 mark with the Rest of the Tail. Pointing 100 was a welcome boost but to many others got in and got out.

lee, siddle and kreza devaluing the art of bowling full stop.

Clarke with a six off Ntini to very fine long leg
Australia with fast start today. 38 runs in 5 overs this morning

Lee 21 ct at 2nd slip by Kallis off Steyn
Aus 322-7 after 95.2 overs
Partnership: 45 runs, 6.5 overs, RR: 6.58

MJ bolwed by Steyn. 4-74 for him
Aus 326-7 after 95.5 overs

Steyn get the 5th. Hauritz, given out ct at 1st slip by G Smith after consultation between umpires. Smith right after the catch signalled the box (third umpire) meaning not sure
Aus 352-9 after 101.5 overs

Steyn in his 29th test has nine 4fers and ten 5fers

101.5 Steyn to Hauritz, OUT, edged and it doesn't carry, or does it? Steyn draws a regulation thick outside edge off the bat as Hauritz plays off the back foot, which starts dipping on Smith at first slip as Boucher doesn't go for it ... the ball hits the fingers on the full, sort of jamming them, Smith is not sure and so the two umpires get together and after some communication with the television umpire it is decided that Smith took it cleanly ... still some confusion but Lee has to go, I saw replays a couple times and it looked a very tough call to make .. it looked like Smith jammed his fingers under the ball in time safely in time, though he was quick to say he wasn't sure

9 down, Hauritz gone. Good diplomatic reaction by Graeme Smith to reffer that, very edgy catch. In the end, it looked like he caught it.
Good 5fer for Steyn, incredible speed and stamina on display.

Steyn may have got his 5-er, but imho he didnt bowl that good.

4 leg bye off the shoulder of siddle, followed next ball by a leg glance for 4. Mark Nicholas compares that to a Tendulkar shot, steady on chap.

Kallis takes his first wkt to end the inns, Siddle out, Michael Clarke left high and dry on 88, Australia finish on 394

Only Steyn troubled the Aussies with his swing ....SA shud easily chase this total cuz Aus dont have any swing bowler....Hilfenhaus shud have played .
