Virat Kohli's sixth Test ton in Australia was compensated for to some extent as Usman Khawaja's patient 41* stretched Australia's lead to 175 on day three of the second Test at Perth on Sunday, 16 December.

Australia went to stumps at 132/4 after Kohli's sensational 123 helped India to a sizeable total of 283. Nathan Lyon was the star with the ball for the hosts, claiming his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests, which included crucial wickets of Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant.

Kohli dominated the morning session despite losing his deputy in the first over of the day as Lyon induced a feather off Rahane's willow with a tossed-up delivery, thus breaking the 91-run stand between the two overnight batsmen.

Hanuma Vihari, who had starred with the ball on day two, tried to rebuild with Kohli after the early setback. The duo added 50 runs for the fifth wicket, steadying the ship with their cautious yet assertive approach.

Kohli notched up his 25th Test century in the 81st over with an off-drive drive down the ground for four, becoming the second fastest cricketer after Donald Bradman to reach the milestone.

But Vihari was dismissed soon after, falling to Josh Hazlewood for a 46-ball 20 as an away-going delivery caught the edge and carried to the wicket-keeper for an easy grab.

Kohli finally fell on 123 caught by Peter Handscomb at second slip off Pat Cummins a few minutes before lunch. The 30-year-old went searching for a wide delivery only to get a thick edge behind to the slip cordon.

Kohli's wicket brought another as Mohammed Shami was caught behind first-ball and India went to lunch at 252/7, having yielded four wickets that included three specialist batsmen in the morning session.

The hosts wrapped up the innings inside 13 overs after the break as Ishant Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah were dismissed for 4, 36 and 4 respectively and India were left 43 runs short of Australia's first-innings total of 326.

In the second innings, Australia enjoyed spates of luck and put on a crucial opening stand of 33 runs before Finch had to retire hurt after being hit on a finger by a rising Shami delivery. The right-hander was later taken to the hospital for scans, and the injury could rule him out from the remainder of this Test.

Unshaken, Marcus Harris (20) rode his luck and edged a shortish delivery from Ishant Sharma to the first slip, but survived after Cheteshwar Pujara failed to hold on the ball despite diving to his right.

Harris was eventually knocked over by Bumrah but not before he and Usman Khawaja had taken Australia's lead past the three-figure mark. Shaun Marsh followed as well, adding just five runs to the total before falling to Shami in the 21st over.

Peter Handscomb adopted a counter-attacking approach by slamming three quick boundaries, but was trapped lbw by Ishant Sharma for a 14-ball 13.

Travis Head joined Khawaja thereafter and a small 35-run partnership blossomed between the two as they took the hosts' total past the 100-run mark. But it couldn't last long as Head slashed at a wide ball from Shami, lobbing a catch to Sharma at the third-man fence.

That brought captain Paine to the crease, who combined with Khawaja for 7.5 overs to see Australia through to stumps.

Score:

Australia 326 & 132/4
India 283

Hope Australia bats well and scores 300 atleast, it has been an embarrassing display of batting by Australia.

1-1 coming up... Setting up for a real good one at the MCG...

why didnt India play Jadeja? Is he on tour?

I feel a good spinner would have done a good job on this pitch. Tho who knows Vihari might surprise me

Aakash Chopra saying Vihari was as effective as Lyong - Ponting laughs at his comment.

Aussies have passed first test - Bumrah's opening spell. Now probably they'll set over 300, as the 2nd ball is 21 overs away.

Another thing I want to know is why the India bowlers REFUSE to bowl at the wickets.

They are looking for edges since Aussie batsmen have been pretty consistently edging to slips and keeper this series

Thank the big brain of our brainless captain never has there been a this good a player who manages to effect the game so positively only to balance it with his captaincy in so much of a negative way.

Anyone under the misconception that we will chase anything here needs to see how low the ball's staying right now.

I see your point now, a spinner would have been handy here

Australia running away with this. India needs quick wickets need to bowl them out under 300

Bumrah the octopus arms moves about like one. Has been excellent find for Ind

Batting way too slow to build a sizeable enough lead to warrant a declaration

I feel Aus will need atleast 4 sessions to bowl India out

Why didn't they take front line spinner even aus has Lyon. Always got to have what always worked for you, least one spinner

Australia have some big stadiums with big outfields. Next world T20 won't be high scoring for sure 160-180 will be 190-220

If Yadav hadnt played, India would have been better off to be honest. :jimmy,

I hope they select their team properly for the next test. I am looking at you Mr. Shastri

Meanwhile, Australia in a commanding position, Usman finally doing his talent some good. Go for a 100 lad! Overtake Kohli..

Kohli sledged Paine and Paine looked rattled. How the tables turned over. Aus under Ponting were such sledging masters I remember once Macgrath went upto Sarwans face there was some contact too !

Now it see,s like it's easy to get under the skin of the aussies. Softies

I dont think the Aussies have changed much. They are just up against a far more formidable ATG level bully. :virat

From Bharath Seervi: India's record when chasing 200+ targets in last 5 years:

Won - 0 Lost - 8 Drawn - 4

lol.... Here is a stat for anyone who is optimistic that India can chase..

Nah. If warner was around it would have been a lot of crying from Indians

Lol Kohli called Paine a part-time captain. Such true words ahaha

Kohli's behavior is getting ridiculous, Paine is such a good guy why constantly getting on his face. He never did it to Smith when he was scoring and bashing India

I cannot fathom how Harsha Bhogle has been commentating for two decades and is still such a nerdy, mediocre commentator. Also how he still manages to get a gig

Kohli is looking it out there. Even he doesn't believe there's any chance of an Indian win here.

Kohli's sledging had blessings written all over it, he has passed his powers to Tim Paine

this is a pretty flat pitch right now.... Only see Lyon taking wickets later

Aussie hv more than enough now. Should declare. India will get bowled out for about 150 or so. Both indian openers are walking wickets. (They may not even make it to the bangladesh playing eleven)

I'll take them both and kick out Imrul Kayes

Aussies won the session and Tim Paine got my respect, he played well against the deadliest pace attack of India. This has been very slow from the Aussies, once the new ball is taken in the next two overs Aussies will score maximum 30 runs, will be hard facing Bumrah's switch chin music. I rate Bumrah higher than Starc, he doesn't bowl pies like Starc.

Bumrah does his bowling do the talking, doesn't sledge just glares and has a good smile. Good Kid

Draw is out of the question given the nature of the pitch and quality of the bowling.

It's 1-1 now.

It's easy to score runs when your team is already in a winning position without scoring anything.

Why did Kohli run up to Paine?

Does the man love being the center of attention even when he's supposed to be a fieldsman?

He came at a difficult time and saved Aussies from a collapse, batted well against Bumrah, Ishant & Shami. Credit where it's due

233/4 & it will be 1-1 here provided hosts move on from here & look to bowl 30 overs today . 300 is a very safe target .

As I said. Australia is already in a winning position. His contribution wouldn't make any difference.

Now indians are praying for draw.

Mr Gavaskar was saying 0-3 India win to Mr Vikrant Gupta few dayz ago.

Over confidence and Bahu bhali bollywood bravery culture is going to haunt Kohli’s team in SENA region.

Hope Aussies show kohli his real place . He acts like a clown who thinks he is superior then everyon else. He has veen humiliated bo of times.. Wc 2015, CT 2017 and Aus test series spring to mind.
Poor bloke hasnt won anything substantial other than bilateral series wins against sl whom thtashed them in ct group match.
Kohli has just onematch winning century outside asia while Kane has 3

why so bitter ?

Indians were duped by the media, Ravi Shashtri feel right into the media hype. Yes the wicket is a bouncy track but the spinner was a must for a variety and that cost them this match..

AUS will definitely increase scoring rate now. Ideally they would like to bat for 40 more overs & add 150.

150 in the next 40 overs with this current Aussie lot is Mission Impossible, as I type Paine gone. Aussies will be lucky to score another 50 runs

I said what they'll like to do, not what they'll do. Six down, now probably they'll be happy with another 50 :)

Australia had this test won even before they scored a single run today. These late wickets won't help India one bit.

Out of 200 balls Khwaja has faced in this innings, at least half of them would be play and miss.

This. People really need to stop getting sucked into the hoping game Indian team plays with us, we have lost this game, this is just a proceeding to decide on the margin.

Correct. My prediction, India: 150-odd all out.

Whatever one says, Bumrah has been incredibly unlucky in this innings.

God, I want to like Kohli but he always does something unadmirable. This time laughing at Paine, this is why SRT will always have a greater legacy.

Third innings in a row Cummins left to see off the second new ball, might as well open for Australia

Cracks are opening, this Perth wicket is very similar to the old WACA wicket. Probably same soil and climate.
