Curator expects the Optus stadium pitch to be unlike anything we have seen recently.

The WA Cricket Association’s head curator said he had not felt any commercial pressure to ensure the Test match went for five days and that he was aiming to produce a fast pitch that would recall the WACA Ground’s heyday and genuinely test the batsmen.

“I don’t know what’s happened in the past, but I haven’t had any correspondence relating to that (commercial considerations) at all,” Sipthorpe said.

“For us it’s been more about there’s no Gabba in this Test series. So the only other ground that’s got the potential to be that fiery, bouncy pitch is our one. Length of time hasn’t been discussed at all. It’s just try and make it quick, try and make it bouncy.

No problem. I expect Indian batsmen as well as pacers to be well equipped to deal with the pitch.

I don't think indians would mind much, your pacers are slightly better than ours but our batsmen are much better than yours, green pitch or bouncy pitch we will outbat you. Spicy pitch means our bowlers and aussie bowlers will basically be the same, just like in England and SA only difference is unlike those teams Aussie batting isn't better than indian one for those conditions.

Oh my Bumrah would be licking his chops.... Aussies batsman may become shooting ducks...

Bhuvi with his swing could have a role here as well. Perhaps ideal pitch for him to play on this tour. Tough call ahead for the team management - 6th batsman or Bhuvi.

Don’t think pitch type will save Australia. This is not an ODI where you can have mug batsmen but have a class bowling attack to save you. Tests will expose all your shortcomings.

Even eternal optimists like us knew Perth will be tough for India to win. Hence I was so desperate for this Adelaide win so that we could go 1-1 in the Boxing day test. Its not WACA anymore and as per rumours the new ground in Perth will hv the fastest pitch.

However, I would still want India to bat first if win the toss. We need to show the opposition that we are no 1 test team and ain't afraid of phaast pitches. :akhtar

There's far more bounce than swing. Bhuvi won't play because Kookaburra doesn't swing after first 20 overs, regardless of pitch or condition. So he will be thrashed to oblivion rest of the match.

You need serious pace (Shami, Bumrah) or height (Ishant) to generate good enough bounce, which Bhuvi can't produce.

If I am not wrong the SA vs Aus 1st odi was played on this new pitch. The SA bowlers were really getting some zip and bounce of the surface. It was fun to watch. Mohammad Shami could have some fun on this pitch.

I hope both teams play 5 bowling options . Hosts have M Marsh but we will have to field 4 pacers & a spinner if we decide to go this route which will unfortunately not happen .
Expect & backing 1-1 here .

India vs Australia: Australia Coach Justin Langer Hints At Bouncy Wicket For Perth Test

Indian cricket team started the four-match Test series against Australia with a 31-run win in Adelaide on Monday. Ahead of the second Test, to be played from December 14 to 18 in Perth, Australia coach Justin Langer has said he is hoping to get a pitch full of bounce and pace in the newly built Optus Stadium. Australia will aim for a series equaliser in Perth after having suffered a narrow defeat in Adelaide. "I'm really fascinated and can't wait to see what the Optus wicket brings," Justin Langer said, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

"I went and watched a bit of the game, NSW versus WA. Certainly some pace and bounce. We've (also) seen some pace and bounce in it during the one-dayers and T20 game," Langer added.

Langer, who played 105 Tests for Australia, gave an update on Australian skipper Tim Paine's finger injury that he suffered on the fifth day of the Adelaide Test. "He's obviously had issues with it before but he is 100 per cent ready to go," the Australian coach said.

Paine sustained an injury on the same finger that has been operated seven times in the last seven years. Langer lauded the Australia captain for his grit, saying: "Painey is the toughest pretty boy I've ever met in my life. Even if it was snapped in about four places he'd still be right. He's absolutely fine."

Earlier, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting claimed that the Perth wicket will be more suitable for the home team. "I think Perth will definitely be a lot more suitable for our guys than the Indians. But our players need to bounce back pretty quickly," Ponting told reporters.

D Jones on Twitter : The Perth pitch is a drop in pitch.. what I have been told it is a very abrasive ground and pitch and the ball will turn.. and reverse swing big time.

can't wait for second test. I was never this existing for Test matches lately. Hope to win for india but a close match would just fine for me.

Bhuvi can bat better than Rohit on a swinging pitch.

Shami will.come.in picture, sadly Lyon has done better than Ash.
Jaddu might get to play instead of Rohit I feel..

Toss will be key.

Usually yes. specially with all 10 can bat in Aus side. India has only five batters and rest are sitting ducks on bounce pitch.
Five bowler strategy from India could put the losing toss out of window.

It has been one of the worst year for batsmen in test cricket, the overall scores are very low, kudos to.Kphli for standing tall, sadly no one would realize unless they compare the statistics.

Credit to Aus tail. They play really good. But somehow Ashwin was not able to abstract the spin from ruff area. it was concerning for team management. Kuldeep could be a good option too. Jaddu doesnt add much in batting wise.

Umesh Yadav should be a part of the XI, probably replacing Rohit. He's already got a 5fer at this very ground.

I remember a test on 2011 tour when Dhoni picked Vinay Kumar to make his debut for the Perth an all pace attack, even Bhuvi is a twice better choice than VK. IIRC Umesh bowled 150+ multiple times in that test and picked a very expensive 5-er. Kohli will have fond memories of that test, saved his test career with a 75 in 2nd innings, even though we lost.

93-5 out of a total of 369 isn't expensive at all.

Reminds me of the rank Turner that Indians produced when Aussies visited India last time. Smith scored a century and Aussies won that. This could blow up on the Aussies in a similar way. Indian batting can out bat this Aussie team here and Indian bowlers aren't mugs either.

Rohit Sharma will play, he ain't going nowhere! It will be the same team except if Shaw is fit he'll come at the expense of Vijay otherwise there'll be no change. Personally, I want to see Kuldeep in place of Ashwin since he will get turn and bounce at Perth and will be a handful. Ashwin didn't really do much on the 5th day pitch in Adelaide as it has eased up a bit, but on that same pitch Kuldeep would have been a handful due to being a wrist spinner.

5/93 isn't too expensive, a lot better than what Ishant and Zaheer did:

'To hell with the nets,' says coach Shastri

A three-day turnaround between Tests shapes as a physical and mental challenge for both Australia and India.

The four-Test series continues at Perth's Optus Stadium on Friday, with the tourists having recorded a 31-run win in Adelaide to take the early advantage.

Both teams travelled on Tuesday, essentially leaving them with just two days to recover, review what went right and wrong during the series opener then ready themselves for the second Test.

The most obvious priority for both camps, apart from Tim Paine's finger injury that Australia coach Justin Langer insists is "absolutely fine", is ensuring their respective pace attacks are fit and ready to fire.

Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami delivered a total of 123.4 overs in Adelaide, where Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins combined for 120.5 overs.

The six stars are likely to be licking their lips upon hearing some predictions of a pitch with plenty of pace and bounce.

However, they're unlikely to roll the arm over much in the nets before day one of the second Test.

"They have to rest up. To hell with the nets. You just come there, mark your attendance and get away to the hotel," India coach Ravi Shastri said.

Apart from managing players' physical workloads, Langer is keen to ensure his inexperienced charges aren't mentally cooked after a tense finish to Australia's much-anticipated first home Test since the Cape Town cheating scandal.

"Training will probably look a lot different at this time of the year than perhaps we've seen in the past," Langer said.

"We'll freshen the guys up. It's something we're aware of. We'll work it out over the next few days.

"On the one hand, the youth helps us because they'll have the physical energy. It's (also) mentally very taxing playing Test cricket. It's really tiring'."

Mitch Marsh will link with the Test squad but the vice-captain is likely to be left on the sidelines again.

Langer suggested quicks Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins will be fine to back up, meaning Peter Siddle will be on drinks duty once again.

"They've had a couple of days off. Would've had three or four days off (come day one). India are in exactly the same situation," he said.

This will be a walk in the park for India, I don’t see Aussies handling Bumrah, Shami and Ishant. This is the best Indian pace attack I have ever seen. Proud of Mohammed Shami.

Good catch , its true for many countries.

I would love to see either Bhuvi or Jadeja in place of Rohit & yes , Pant needs to be told he must target batting for 100 balls .

Interesting stats from CricViz

In the first average speed of all Aussie pacers was 142.5 kmph while the average speed of Indian seamers was 141.6 kmph.

Among all the bowlers, Ishant extracted the most swing and seam.

Interestingly, they also said average seam movement off the deck was the lowest it has been since 2009 at Adelaide (may need to consider the the whole square was dug for renovation in 2013, data may also be skewed by the 3 d/n tests where under light the ball has more prodigious movement ). Yet while watching it felt as if there was more movement compared to the last day test vs India in 2014.

from Twitter [ not sure if true ] , during the Adelaide - Perth flight : Recovery is key! Virat Kohli & his wife gave up their seats in business to allow the quicks to travel in comfort to Perth.

The flight attendant was brilliant when Kohli asked permission - she laughed “no! I go for Australia!” before helping them out.

I hope boasting about skipping net sessions don’t come back to bite Shastri and co in the bum. Preparation is everything at this level.

Excited to see the fastest ever pitch laid out. Ozzies trying their best to ensure 1-1. Test cricket at its best!

It will be much balder before the game. You don't play Test cricket on a green pitch resembling an outfield.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Rohit Sharma to miss the Perth Test due to injury

India have suffered major injury blows with ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and hard-hitting batter Rohit Sharma ruled out of the second Domain Test in Perth.

India confirmed on Thursday Ashwin has suffered a left-side abdominal strain, while Rohit jarred his back in the field during the first Test.

Replacing the injured pair are spin-bowling allrounder Hanuma Vihari and paceman Umesh Yadav, with Ravindra Jadeja the sole spinner in the squad.

India squad: Virat Kohli (c), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav

Ashwin was seriously over-bowled in the last test! I dont think jadeja will be a wicket taking option in Perth, but the speed at which he completes overs will be useful. His bat might also yield useful runs

Hanuma has a trial by fire to prove his place in the team. I hope he can negotiate the bounce in perth

Blessing in disguise for Indians on Rohit and Ashwin missing out. Jadeja is far better batsman and bowler nowadays. Rohit and pant can't be in a same 11 for a test.

Kohli ground Ashwin into the ground at Adelaide. And to be seen as a team man, Ashwin continued to bowl over after over. Sorry state of affairs. When as an outsider I know the fitness level of Ashwin, why can't Kohli understand how much is too much? smh

I wonder how Rohit gets injured this often, after all he plays only LoIs. Played this test, totally undeserving mind you, and gets injured.

Given the pitch, the match will get over in 3 & half days. No point in playing a spinner. India should play Bhuvi as the 4th seamer. His batting isn't bat either.

This is the effect of playing with 4 bowlers.Ashwin was overbowled.Same thing happened with Bhuvi in England 2014

We must play 5 bowlers.I'd play both Bhuvi and Jadeja here

It is not that big loss for india considering the pitch...vihari surely better batter than rohit in tests,Ashwin may not have big role to play with ball in hand but his handy 20s or 30s with the bat will be a loss,,

You need a wrist spinner at Perth - Kuldeep would have been mighty handy if Ashwin could not play. On the flip-side, Jadeja does give the all-rounder option.

Ashwin's fitness has always been suspect. He's had too many side strains in the last 2 years which is why he hasn't looked as threatening as he was before 2016. The pivot he used to get before release isn;t as effective as it was earlier.

On the point about 5 bowlers, absolutely and all the time. 2 out of Bhuvi/Jadeja/Ashwin should be playing all the time.

13-man shortlist for Perth: Virat Kohli (c), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav.

Bhuvi should play. Aussies have many lefties Jadeja can come under hammer. and Bhuvi can bat too.

Vihari for Sharma.

Bhuvi for Ashwin.

Grass will be shaved off today evening . I just hope they retain about 4mm which should be sufficient to impart life to this drop-in pitch for at least first 2 innings . Can any poster living in Australia check the weather forecast . BoM-Aus says 60 & 40% chance of rain on day 2 & 3 .

Left field we should just pick Kumar over Ashwin and go with an all out pace attack.

And should bowl first if we win the toss.

Who will bowl 40 overs on the trot in that case? I'm guessing Bhuvi again.

Ideally the Aussie line-up is brittle enough for us to not bowl that long. Even at the WACA rarely were 400/500+ scores hit.

Of the 119 overs Australia batted in the second innings of the last game, Ashwin bowled 53. He bowled ~90 overs across the two innings. That's one day of test cricket out of the 5 bowled only by him. Someone has to play this role with the 4 bowler strategy. You don't need 400/500 for such overload.

In fact, if Australians do end up scoring that much, we would have a couple of bowlers leaving on stretchers.

If Aussies bat 250 overs on this pitch we should come back home asap.

All this talk of a super quick and bouncy pitch reminds me of the build up to the WACA test in 2008 where Lee, Tait, MJ and Clark were supposed to tear through the Indian batting lineup. In the end the Indian batsmen did ok and RP Singh and Pathan won the test for India.

We also can't ignore the fact that our batting lineup was basically ATG batting lineup in their primes and the bowlers were on the wane lee, more miss than hit MJ and Tait. This batting lineup isn't a patch on the 2008 one, aussie bowling lineup is also much better than the one we faced in 2008.

Umesh and Jadeja should replace Rohit and Ashwin. Umesh is gonna be seriously potent on this pitch.

India skipper Virat Kohli was undaunted on Thursday despite losing prolific spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Rohit Sharma to injury as he looks to twist the knife in the second Test against Australia.

The visitors went 1-0 in the four-Test series after a tense, 31-run win in Adelaide earlier this week — their first victory in Australia in a decade.

But India, who are searching for their first series win in Australia, suffered a setback when Ashwin and the experienced Sharma were declared unavailable for the second Test in Perth, starting on Friday.

Ashwin is receiving treatment for a left-sided abdominal strain, while Sharma jarred his back while fielding in Adelaide, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said.

Also missing, as expected, will be exciting young opener Prithvi Shaw, who suffering ligament damage in a warm-up match ahead of the Adelaide Test. The BCCI said Shaw, 19, was "recovering well" but was still undergoing treatment.

However, Kohli was bullish about India's prospects in the inaugural Test at the new Perth Stadium, which has replaced the city's venerable WACA Ground as its premier cricket venue.

"We are definitely confident of the percentage of chances we have and we want to build on that," said Kohli at a pre-match press conference before the injury problems were announced.

"Obviously Australia is going to be a strong team in their home conditions and on a wicket like Perth, which probably offers you more than most other pitches in Australia. But we have an equal chance."

Ashwin took six wickets in the first Test, while Sharma hit scores of 37 and one. They were the notable absences in India's initial 13-man squad.

All-rounder Hanuma Vihari is expected to slot in for Sharma, with the final spot a toss-up between pacemen Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav or Ravindra Jadeja, who has taken 185 Test wickets with his left-arm spin and also averages 32.44 with the bat.

'More excited than nervous'
The Test will be the first at the new 60,000-capacity Perth Stadium, whose wicket is likely to be fast and bouncy like the old WACA, just over the Swan River.

Kohli said he was impressed by the new arena and not concerned by a wicket that is set to favour fast bowlers, with Australia having a world-class line-up of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.

He pointed to his own attack of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, saying they were "at the peak of their abilities".

"We certainly get more excited than nervous looking at lively pitches now because we understand that we do have a bowling attack that can bowl the opposition out as much as they are confident about their attack," he said.

"When you have fast bowlers who are at the peak of their abilities it is always a great thing to have in the side.

"And as batsmen it gives us a lot of motivation and boosts us up to put in those significant match-winning batting performances, because we have so much belief in our bowling unit at the moment. “We understand that if we bat well, we will definitely get the result that we want."

Despite Kohli's confidence, he cautioned his team not be complacent, noting that "we need to keep repeating good things to win series".

India: Virat Kohli (capt), Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav

I would go with this squad

Vijay
Kl
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Vihari
Pant
Bhuvi
Ishant
Shami
Bumrah
Vijay and Vihari to do 5th bowler duties. I would have picked Umesh over Bhuvi but Bhuvi gives us the extra batting cushion that Umesh doesn't.

I feel India has missed a trick here by not picking Kuldeep.

Kholi is protecting him I guess. Aussies will target him and in expected low scoring shootout, he can be a liability. If we win this one I expect him to play in boxing day test.

Lyon picked up 7 wickets in the only FC match played here a couple of weeks ago. Not picking a spinner would be a mistake. On the other hand, both Vijay and Vihari can roll their arms allowing India to accommodate Bhuvi.

That square is not the middle. It's at the end behind where the stumps would be. The stump cam & mic connections are routed through that.

Hosts are unchanged & visitors will probably induct Bhuvi & Vihari for injured players . I just hope they do not shave the pitch completely .

BoM Australia for Perth : 15th December Min 19 Max 30 Possible shower or storm.
: 16th December Min 17 Max 25 Shower or two.

Rain in Perth in December ???

The pitch will be full of grass. On these conditions, I dont expect India to win just like I don't expect Aust to win in rank turners. So it will be 1-1 when we play the Boxing test.
