If SA get all out here that might be a blessing in disguise.

cricinfo : "For the record, the highest ever score in the 4th innings of a match for a player in their last test is 96 by Sunil Gavaskar." And that innings was a beauty .

I reckon the declaration is coming in a couple of overs.

poor cricket from Smith .Why give the opportunity to Aussies to draw the test . 607/7 & 20 overs left .

lol you would'nt have either

No but Smith is defensive and is wary because we have come back from ridiculous situations against them before. It isnt going to matter in the end anyway, we are going to lose and lose heavily.

If SA don't leave themselves with at least 15-20 overs to bowl at Aus today they would have missed a trick imo.

yup...the lead is way too much...just pray for the rain now

ABCDEFG :out

Top knock. Hope he gives up the gloves.

According to crapinfo

The last 2 tests have produced the 2nd and 3rd fastest scoring 550plus scores in test history, out of 272 such scores.

Might as well declare now that ABCDEF has been dismissed. No point getting bowled out by the OZ. Dictate terms and declare.

Smith wants to give a chance to both starc and MJ to take a 5fer...very generous of him

I think SA have a master plan to gift Johnson a 5-fer and keep him in the team :D

622/8 & 197 overs left in match . Smith thing - omg,how do we see this tricky test thru !!!

Declaring in another couple of overs would leave SA with 15 overs to bowl today. Three 5 over spells for Steyn, Morkel and VP to go all out.

absolute stupidity .had he declared just before drinks ,they would saved 2 overs for innings change over .

Morkel padded up as well. This is just far too defensive from SA.

Yeah I don't see the point either. Plus stand a good chance of injuring your quicks while batting here as well.

What's with Donanld and that rugby ball? He carries it every where lol

569 all out, 631 to chase. 105 runs a session basically.

So 14 overs to bowl at Aus. Worked out ok in the end. Maybe getting all out was a blessing in disguise. SA far too defensive.

Some of you guys are pathetic. Must Smith just give Aus the series win. Give Aus a target of 450? If Aus wants to be #1 they must deserve it and score runs. There top 6 could only score 50 runs in the first innings. Hilarious. They couldn't face pace.

Saffers are playing for back to back series wins in Aus. An honorable achievement.

Will they attack or will they try to hold on till stumps with all 10 wickets in hand?

Smith has backed draw imo .

It's a pragmatic decision. Smiffy knows that he just needs to draw the match to maintain the #1 ranking. Of course he wants to win the series, but I think he definitely doesn't want to lose it. So pile on a mountain of runs and take the loss out of the equation. Realistically there's really only one result here, a Yarpie win.

Ya some of the criticism is way over the top, if Smith was defensive they might have gone at 3 an over instead of seizing the initiative.

lol@talks about defensive captaincy and a draw here. Anyone who thinks this will end as a draw should really stop watching cricket.
