Bangladesh got mauled badly last time they were in South Africa.

Should be a tough tour. They will put up a good fight hopefully.

Opener Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan have been included in the Bangladesh Test squad for the away series against South Africa as Bangladesh Cricket Board announced both the ODI and Test squad Thursday.

There was speculation regarding Shakib’s inclusion in the Test squad for the South Africa series but eventually the left-hander has been included for red-ball cricket.

Bangladesh last played a Test series against New Zealand away where they claimed a historic victory in the first Test of the series.

Both Shakib and Tamim were missing in that series as the former took leave for personal reasons and the latter was injured.

Opener Mohammad Naim and Fazle Mahmud have been dropped from the last Test squad.

Naim played the second match of the series and scored nought and 24 in the two innings while Rabbi did not play any game.

In the ODI squad, pacer Khaled Ahmed has been included in the squad which have played in the recently concluded Afghanistan ODI series where Bangladesh won 2-1.

Bangladesh team will travel to South Africa on March 12 and players can start practice from March 14 upon testing Covid-19 negative.

Bangladesh will play three ODIs and two Tests in the South Africa tour.

The ODIs will be played on March 18, 23 and 25.

The first Test will start from March 31 while the second will commence from April 8.

Johannesburg: South Africa on Tuesday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming home ODI series against Bangladesh, starting on March 18. The Temba Bavuma-led side will miss the services of Sisanda Magala and Anrich Nortje for the series. Magala missed out owing to fitness concerns while Nortje is still recovering from his hip injury.

The three-match series, which will be played across Centurion and Johannesburg, will finish on March 23, just three days before the start of the IPL, which could mean the South African players chosen for the ODIs could miss some of their franchises’ early matches.

South Africa’s squad includes eight players who are set to take part in the IPL — Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Dwaine Pretorius and Marco Jansen.

A three-day quarantine is mandatory for all teams before they enter the IPL bubble, but this rule will be relaxed if players are arriving from another bubble. Though the South Africa-Bangladesh series is set to be played within a “managed environment”, which is more relaxed than a bio-bubble and which CSA used for its recent domestic T20 competition.

This means players will be permitted to go to outdoor spaces including beaches, parks and open-air restaurants. So, it remains to be seen whether it affects their quarantine requirements in the IPL 2022 or not.

However, there is set to be a bigger clash between national commitments and the IPL, when South Africa play their Test series against Bangladesh, which is set to run from March 31 to April 12.

CSA earlier confirmed that the choice between the Test series and the IPL would be left to the players while Test captain Dean Elgar suggested the choice would show “where players’ loyalty lies”.

“The players in the one-day squad who are not playing in the Tests will likely leave for IPL after the ODI series. We will have more clarity on the six players who are part of the Test group in the next couple of days,” Victor Mpitsang, CSA’s selection convenor said

Six players — Rabada, Ngidi, van der Dussen, Markram, Jansen and Nortje, are a part of South Africa’s Test plans.

South Africa Thursday called up batsman Khaya Zondo to their Test team for a two-match series against Bangladesh but have been forced to name a weakened 15-man squad.

They will be without their frontline seam attack with Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada to all play instead in the Indian Premier League Twenty20, which starts on March 26, plus batsmen Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen.

It comes after an agreement between the players’ union and Cricket South Africa to allow players to compete in the IPL and other lucrative limited overs events.

"The loss of the IPL players is not ideal, but we back the CSA system, its ever growing pipeline and most of all, the players we have selected," Convenor of Selectors Victor Mpitsang said in a statement.

Zondo, 32, has played six One Day Internationals for South Africa level but gets his first Test call-up to provide cover in the middle order.

Keegan Petersen, who was the one of the heroes of the home series win over India at the start of the year, returns after missing last month’s tour to New Zealand because of a Covid-19 infection.

The Tests will be staged at Kingsmead in Durban from March 31 to April 4, and St George’s Park in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, April 8-12.

Squad: Dean Elgar (captain), Temba Bavuma, Daryn Dupavillon, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Duanne Olivier, Keegan Petersen, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams, Khaya Zondo.

Bangladesh one-day international captain Tamim Iqbal believes the challenge of facing South Africa on their turf increases when playing at an unknown venue like the Centurion.

Also known as the SuperSport Park – Bangladesh till date have played only one game here – a Test back in 2007.

Bangladesh are set to take on hosts South Africa in the first match of the three-ODI series at the venue Friday.

Tamim along with Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim are the only three players from the current lot to have played the game 15 years ago at the Centurion and conceded a defeat by an innings and 48 runs.

“We had three to four practice sessions, so tried to cope with the condition as much as possible. But one has to understand that we do not regularly play in such condition. It was good that we got to bat on the center wicket at the Wanderers where we play the second ODI [Sunday]. We had a match situation practice there. You cannot mix with the condition in just two or three days. The crucial part is to be prepared mentally and fight to the best extent possible. You have to be lucky to suddenly come to places like these and find yourself prepared,” said Tamim at the pre-match media conference Thursday.

Bangladesh reached South Africa last week with the ambition of changing their record there – the side have never been able to win a game of cricket against the hosts.

Bangladesh look to drive inspiration from their historic Test win on tour of New Zealand earlier this year.

“We do not have experience of playing one-day cricket here. It will be challenging for us. It [Centurion] is a high scoring ground because of the shape and the outfield of the ground. End of the day we will have to play our best cricket and there is no doubt they [South Africa] will try to dominate us. We will have to handle that well. We played well against them in the World Cup recently so there is no reason for us to not play well against them. Irrespective of whatever I am saying now, important for us will be the start [today],” Tamim explained.

Bangladesh team in South Africa were joined by all-rounder Shakib in the last minute following a series of drama with Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Shakib had asked for a leave from the series citing mental and physical fatigue.

Though Shakib later joined the team, there are wide assumptions that the cricketer will play selected matches in the series and that this has been decided between the BCB and the Shakib himself.

Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim however, is not informed of any such decision between Shakib and the board.
“I do not have any such message that he [Shakib] will have to be rested in two matches or so. I know that he is with the team and fully available. We had discussion on cricket and he is eagerly looking forward to the game [today]. Shakib wants the team to do well,” said Tamim.

Bangladesh have completely outplayed South Africa in this game. This is going to be an very dominant win.

Interestingly enough Taskin has been bowling faster than Rabada this match on average. Rabada clearly saving his energy for the IPL lol.

Meanwhile, this is supposed to a depressed, out-of-form Shakib :))

Shak is past prime but still a dominant cricketer.

Bangladesh shouldn't lose focus now. They can win the series if they play like this.

Brilliant Bangladesh make history with first-ever ODI win in South Africa

Bangladesh produced a historic victory in the first ODI in Centurion, securing their first-ever win on South African soil as they beat the Proteas by 38 runs.

The tourists had never won a One Day International in South Africa in 19 previous attempts, but produced a superb display in the first ODI of the tour to break new ground in the format.

And Bangladesh’s stunning win further strengthens their place at the top of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings, where they lead England and India in the top three.

The victory was built on the foundations set by a team effort with the bat, with Litton Das (50), Shakib Al Hasan (77) and Yasir Ali (50) all making half-centuries. And other useful contributions came right down the order as the Tigers built on a solid start to post 314/7.

Early wickets pegged South Africa's chase back, Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed making the early inroads.

Impressive half-centuries from Rassie van der Dussen (86) and David Miller (79) gave the hosts some hope. But Mehidy Hasan Miraz rattled through the tail with a four-for, picking up the crucial wicket of Miller.

And there were jubilant scenes on the pitch and amongst the watching Bangladesh fans when Mahmudullah had Keshav Maharaj trapped in-front to seal a 38-run win.

After being put in to bat first, Bangladesh initially struggled to get going. Their openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das were cautious, scoring at a snail’s pace, their half-century partnership coming only in the 16th over.

While both batters hit an occasional wonderful shot across the boundary, they were kept quiet for most of the time by a disciplined South African bowling attack.

The openers broke loose in the 19th over when Liton smashed Keshav Maharaj for a six and two fours and were well placed to cross the 100-run mark when Andile Phehlukwayo trapped Tamim in front of off to break the 95-run opening stand.

Liton, who got to his 50 in the next over, was also undone soon after when Maharaj outfoxed him to shatter his stumps.

Mushfiqur Rahim could not last long either and departed for a 12-ball nine. At 124/3 in the 29th over, Bangladesh needed someone to stabilise their innings and Shakib Al Hasan and Yasir Ali did the perfect job of rebuilding.

After seeing off the initial overs, Shakib started accelerating. While Yasir dropped anchor at one end, Shakib started playing his shots, bringing up his fifty with a six over long-off in the 38th over and continuing the assault.

The stand of 115 was broken in the 42nd over with Lungi Ngidi getting Shakib LBW for 77 (64). In the next over Kagiso Rabada caught and bowled Yasir for 50 (44).

And with the platform set for a solid total, crucial cameos from Mahmudullah (25), Afif Hossain (17), and Mehidy Hasan (19*) powered Bangladesh to a handy 314/7.

Three wickets fell in the powerplay at the start of South Africa’s reply, as Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram fell cheaply and Kyle Verreynne was dismissed for 21.

South Africa rebuilt through Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen, with the pair taking their side beyond three figures in an 85-run partnership that ended when the captain was caught behind off Shoriful.

Van der Dussen looked in the mood, moving beyond his half-century and looking on for a century before Yasir Ali produced a stunning catch on the rope to send him packing for 86.

The required rate was creeping up as Bangladesh’s attack kept things tight. But with David Miller still out in the middle and looking to be in explosive form South Africa still had a chance.

And Bangladeshi nerves were jangling when the required runs dropped into double figures and with the dangerous Miller at the crease.

But wickets were tumbling at the other end, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz removing Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada in the space of two overs with his tricky off-spin.

And the 24-year-old got the scalp that Bangladesh really wanted to effectively seal the win, tossing one up to get the better of Miller, who was stumped for an excellent 57-ball 79.

There were only seven deliveries remaining and 38 runs still required when Keshav Maharaj became the last wicket to fall, wrapping up a famous and deserved win for Bangladesh.

The series continues on Sunday in Johannesburg, with the third and final ODI back at Centurion on Wednesday 23 March.

LOL this is Shakib's first decent score after like 25 innings, just stop.

For them he's a very good player throughout his career, and the only player who's ever really 'done' it for them, his WC as well was great. Was what I meant. Not sure why you're whining.

He's a monster player, not sure how he will be replaced

Shakib is not replaceable. A player like Shakib is very rare. I don't see any player of his caliber in the subcontinent let alone in Bangladesh except Jadeja

Actually i didn't expect Bangladesh to win. Really a top-class performance. Let's see how they play in 2nd and 3rd ODI. They have to prove that this wasn't a fluke.

Bangladesh eye first series victory in South Africa

With the series on the line, South Africa will look to bounce back, while Bangladesh, having won the first ODI, will look to seal it by dominating the hosts in the second ODI in Johannesburg.

Overview

South Africa v Bangladesh, second ODI
The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
20 March, 10:00 AM local time

Bangladesh registered a historic win in the first ODI by defeating South Africa by 38 runs and consolidating their position in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League table (powered by MRF Tyres).

It was an all-round performance by the visitors as they posted a formidable total on the board, thanks to quality batting from the top order, followed by solid knocks from Shakib Al Hasan and Yasir Ali in the middle overs, and a sprinkle of power hitting towards the end.

Defending the score their bowlers were up to the task, they picked up wickets at the start and straightaway put pressure on South Africa. Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed impressed with their bowling performances as they dismissed South Africa's top four early.

While Bangladesh will hope to repeat the performance in the second ODI, the hosts will have to sit back and work on plenty of areas. Even with the presence of regular fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi in the side, the Proteas' bowling department was unable to take advantage of home conditions. After some disciplined bowling at the start, they leaked runs and were unable to pick wickets at the right time, allowing Bangladesh's batters to pile up runs.

South Africa's batters struggled too. They got off to a poor start but stabilizing knocks from Rassie Van der Dussen (86) and David Miller (79) absorbed the pressure in the middle overs. However, after their wickets, the hosts struggled to keep up the scoring rate. With series on the line and crucial CWCSL points up for grabs, South Africa will need to regroup and reassess their strategy for the next game.

Remember the last time

South Africa put in Bangladesh to bat after winning the toss. A brilliant opening partnership of 95 runs from the Bangladeshi openers Liton (50) and Tamim (41) helped the visitors to a good start, followed by a brilliant 77 from Shakib Al Hasan and a maiden fifty for Yasir Ali (50), Bangladesh put up a huge score of 314/7 in 50 overs.

Bangladesh pacers took some early wickets reducing South Africa to 36/3 within the first ten overs. Middle-order batters Van der Dussen and captain Bavuma steadied the ship but not for long as Bavuma was dismissed on 31. Dussen continued to build up his innings and scored a brilliant 86 before going to the pavilion. South Africa were bowled out for 276 in 48.5 overs, despite David Miller playing a lone hand of 79 runs off 57 deliveries.

What they said

Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh captain): “It is a big win for us. Special win. Starting from Liton, then Shakib and Yasir batted brilliantly. A six and a four from Miraz. Those quick 25 runs from Mahmudullah. It is a big thing for us. Our fast bowlers are winning games for us. Last two years the fast bowlers are doing brilliantly. You need a character like Mehidy in every team. After going for 40 from 4 overs, he went up to me and asked to bowl. He said he will change the game. He was my Man of the Match. Definitely, we need to give ourselves the best chance. SA are a quality side. They would be eager to bounce back.”

Temba Bavuma (South Africa captain): “When you are chasing over 300, you need one batter to get a 100 and couple others to support them. After my dismissal, we failed to get much momentum apart from the Miller-Rassie partnership and losing Rassie made life very difficult for us. Their bowlers exploited the back of a length spot better. We obviously have to bounce back, Sunday is just around the corner. We need to show the resillience we are known for.”

Further trouble for Bangladesh.

In last game, Miller fought a lone warrior with no support from other end and also the top order facing too many deliveries didn't helped his cause.

Bavuma has to be the one who needs to up the ante, cannot bat that slowly and make it harder for lower middle order batsman to close off the games. This SA ODI team is relying mostly on Qdk, Van der dussen and David Miller.

Total humiliation. This kind of performances prove your win as a fluke

LOL Bangladeshi fans been brought back down to earth.
Pathetic display by an awful team.
Due to Bangladeshi fans it's difficult to support them.Bangladeshi fans are the most delusional fans in the world.

As a Bangladeshi man, I agree with you.

A lot of BD fans don't seem to know anything about taking constructive criticism or having an honest self-reflection. BD players and BD board are like that too. It is embarrassing. This is the #1 reason why growth has been slow.

Also, some fans simply don't follow cricket close enough to form educated opinions. I know one guy who was jumping up and down after BD beat New Zealand C team at home. You can't really converse with these people about cricket. You just have to ignore.

I think mindset has to change big time.

BD - 181/8 (45.5 overs).

South Africa should chase this down comfortably.

I don't know why BD batted first. They should've chased.
