Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced the squad for the upcoming West Indies tour for two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is.

Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman has been returned to the Test team. Another notable inclusion is Anamul Haque Bijoy to the ODI and T20I teams. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who played his last ODI back in July 2019 and last T20I in 2015, has been in sublime form as he broke all sorts of records by scoring avalanche of runs in domestic cricket this season.

Experienced batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is missing the tour as he has been granted leave due to personal reasons while ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has been selected for all three formats.

Tamim Iqbal is not in the T20I squad as the southpaw is opting out from the T20Is since last year.

Bangladesh will play the two-match Test series first and then ODIs and T20Is in the Caribbean Island in June-July this year.

Left-arm quick Mustafizur Rahman is in contention to make his return to red-ball cricket after he was named in Bangladesh’s squad for next month’s tour of the Caribbean.

Mustafizur has not featured in Bangladesh's red-ball team since the home series against West Indies in February last year, but earns a recall to the five-day setup for the two-Test series against the Caribbean side next month.

Bangladesh will play West Indies in two Test matches as part of the World Test Championship (2021-2023), with the first Test commencing in Antigua on June 16.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz is also part of the 16-player Test squad as he returns from a hand issue, while Mosaddek Hossain could play his first Test match since 2019 after he won a recall.

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is included in the Test squad that will be captained by Mominul Haque, but veteran Mushfiqur Rahim will skip the tour to take part in a Hajj pilgrimage.

Bangladesh will also play some white-ball cricket after the completion of the second Test in St Lucia at the end of June, with the Tigers set to take on West Indies in three T20I and three ODIs during July.

Left-hand batter Tamim Iqbal was named as captain of the one-day squad, while experienced all-rounder Mahmudullah will skipper the T20 side during the final part of the six-week tour.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel today named three uncapped players in a 12-man squad for the first Test match against Bangladesh to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua from Thursday, June 16 to Monday, June 20.

The uncapped players are wicket-keeper/batsman Devon Thomas, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie and fast bowler Anderson Phillip. Thomas has played 21 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and four T20 Internationals (T20Is). Motie has so far played one T20I and was a reserve for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last year. Phillip was in the squad throughout the recent Apex Test Series victory against England, but has not made his debut to date. He has featured in three ODIs, including last week’s 3-0 Series win against the Netherlands and is in the ODI squad for the ongoing ODI Series in Pakistan. The Test squad also includes left-handed allrounder Raymon Reifer who has one match on his record.

Experienced fast bowler Kemar Roach is to undergo a fitness assessment as he recovers from an injury sustained in the English County Championship with Surrey. If he is passed fit, he will be included as the 13th player in the Test squad. Allrounder Jason Holder is unavailable for selection as CWI has granted his request for a period of rest and recovery. He will therefore miss Bangladesh’s all-format tour of the West Indies. Batter Tagenarine Chanderpaul and fast bowler Shermon Lewis have been selected as reserves.

The Selection Panel also named the CWI President’s XI to face the visitors in a three-day warm-up match at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua from Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12. The team will be captained by allrounder Yannic Cariah.

Lead Selector, the Most Honorable Dr Desmond Haynes said: “Devon Thomas has been knocking on the door for quite some time. He has done extremely well in our franchise cricket system and we view this as a good opportunity to give him a go. You would notice that Raymon Reifer is also in the squad. He is another person that has done impressively well in the four-day competition and against England (earlier this year). So again, we are giving opportunities to guys who are performing. We think Gudakesh Motie is one of those guys who is also bowling well, and we think it will be a good opportunity for him to be involved.”

Haynes added: “We are looking to pick up World Test Championship points against Bangladesh which will be very important. It would be good for us to use our home advantage to win both Test matches and collect those points.”

On the CWI President’s XI, Haynes noted: “Yannic Cariah has captained Trinidad & Tobago at youth level and he was also the captain of the West Indies Emerging Players team which won the CG United Super50 Cup in 2019. We are looking at future leaders. We need to start identifying these persons as early as possible. While we will need some assistance from the territories as well, we want to make sure there are leaders we can identify and begin grooming for the future of West Indies cricket.”

The upcoming two-match Test series between hosts West Indies and visitors Bangladesh has been titled “Padma Bridge Dream Fulfilled Friendship Test Series Powered By Walton.”

The official logo has a picture of the Padma bridge on top of a red cricket ball.

Bangladesh tech giant Walton are the sponsors of the series.

The first of two Tests begins Thursday in Antigua’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

The Tests – part of the World Test Championship – will be followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is.
 
With Yasir Ali ruled out of the Test series in the West Indies due to a back injury, Bangladesh have included Anamul Haque in the squad for the second Test starting on June 24. Anamul also will be a back-up option for the white-ball series.

Yasir sustained a back injury during the lone three-day practice game against President's XI at CCG on 10 June.

Bangladesh chief selector Minhajul Abedin confirmed the development to Cricbuzz on Wednesday. ''We have decided to send Anamul as a back-up batsman considering Yasir has been ruled out from the (Test) series due to injury.

''Anamul is scoring runs consistently at domestic cricket and as a result we have included him in the white-ball series following the Test matches,'' he added.

Anamul, who hasn't played for Bangladesh in any format since 2019, forced his way into the set-up on the back of creating a world record for aggregating most number of runs (1042 runs in the Dhaka Premier League) in a List A tournament. The previous record was held by Tom Moody, who had accumulated 971 runs in 1991
 
Kemar Roach has been included in the West Indies squad for the first Test match against Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The experienced fast bowler passed a fitness assessment and was added as the 13th player ahead of the start of the Padma Bridge Friendship Test Series, presented by Walton. The match bowls off on Thursday 16 June. The first ball is bowled daily at 10am (9am Jamaica).

Roach has made a full recovery from an injury sustained while playing for Surrey in the English County Championship. Roach is the highest ranked bowler West Indies bowler in the ICC rankings and is West Indies’ leading current wicket-taker in Test matches. He brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the bowling attack with an impressive record of 242 wickets in 72 Test matches at 27 runs apiece and he is also the leading wicket-taker at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium with 43 wickets. His career best figures of 6-48 came against Bangladesh in 2009, while his best figures at the venue are 5-8 which also came against Bangladesh in 2018.

Head Coach Phil Simmons said: “It’s brilliant that he’s fit for the Test match. He’s always an inspiration for the younger players we have here and he’s ready to go. With 250 wickets around the corner, we’re happy with what he brings to the table, not just on the field but in the dressing room as well. I’m glad he’s fit and looking forward to seeing him getting out there and doing what he does so well.”

John Campbell is normally a more attacking player but guilty of rash dismissals. He failed to capitalise on flat pitches in the England series.

You can tell he's playing for his place here with Shiv Chanderpaul's son waiting in the wings as a reserve.

With six ducks in another feeble Bangladesh effort, Shakib Al Hasan's side look bereft of answers in the batting department.

West Indies v Bangladesh Scorecard
Lasting less than a session and a half in North Sound, Bangladesh narrowly avoided a fourth double figure score in the current World Test Championship cycle, unable to deal with the West Indies' fast-bowling artillery.

The hosts will begin day two at 95/2, just eight runs shy of Bangladesh's first innings total.

Another (unwanted) record for Bangladesh

With six ducks in their innings, Bangladesh now have three of the seven Test innings with the dreaded half-dozen of noughts, crumbling to 103 all out and again failing to negotiate opposition new ball threats.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy fell first ball poking at a Kemar Roach delivery, with Najmul Hossain Shanto cleaned up without scoring by a seaming delivery in the quick’s next over.

Mominul Haque’s horror run continued, edging to second slip, while Nurul Hasan was dismissed lbw not offering a shot. Mustafizur Rahman and Khaled Ahmed also failed to add to the tally.

Bowled out inside 33 overs, the collapse joins four other occasions the side have been bundled out inside two sessions during the current World Test Championship cycle in a worrying trend.

Tamim Iqbal (29) was perhaps unlucky with his dismissal having been strangled down the leg-side, and Shakib Al Hasan (51) only came undone on the attack having run out of partners.

West Indies quicks hunt in a pack

On the other side, the West Indies’ four-pronged pace attack showed no respite, stifling the tourists in a strong collective performance and vindicating the decision to bowl first.

Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph claimed three wickets each, with Kemar Roach and Kyle Mayers picking up a pair to earn an early break in the pavilion.

Recovering from a hamstring injury sustained on county duty, Roach was a late inclusion for the side, and began the blitz with a double salvo. It’s not the first time Roach has helped in ripping through Bangladesh in Antigua, with his astonishing performance of 5/8 perhaps still in the back of their opponents’ minds.

Seales squeezed the pressure by claiming the third scalp, and Mayers’ nagging line put Bangladesh in a corner at 45/6. Joseph and Seales returned to clean up the tail.

A rock at the top of the West Indies order, Kraigg Brathwaite continues to show his class, closing the door on a potential Bangladesh hit-back.

Blunting the new ball threat of Mustafizur Rahman and Khaled Ahmed, the Barbadian will resume eight runs short of his 26th Test half-century, joined by the equally-measured Nkrumah Bonner (12*)

Brathwaite (4785) is closing in on 5000 Test runs for the side, and would become the 13th West Indies player to reach the milestone.

A clean sweep of the two-Test series would take the West Indies’ win percentage to an even 50%, and within striking distance of India (3rd, 58.33%), Sri Lanka (4th, 55.56%), and Pakistan (5th, 52.38%).

A spot in the 2023 would be unlikely given their final series are away to South Africa and Australia, though the current outfit should pose more questions in comparison to the West Indies sides that have toured the two countries in recent times.

Without a proper world class batter in their, WI have managed extraordinarily in their home tests for a few years now I would say. Not a single batter of theirs average near 40, yet they have drawn and won a lot of series over last 7-8 years.
 
Bangladesh are staring at the prospect of defeat inside three days after closing day two of the first Test on Friday at 50 for two in their second innings, needing 112 more runs to make the West Indies bat again.

West Indies were eventually dismissed in their first innings for 265 after tea, having started the morning at 95 for two.

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite anchored his side's effort with a typically painstaking 400-minute knock of 94, supported by 63 from Jermaine Blackwood, the vice-captain taking a page from his leader's operational manual as the contribution was the slowest of his 16 Test half-centuries.

For the Bangladeshis, forced onto the back foot after being routed for 103 just after lunch on day one, Brathwaite's dismissal triggered their brightest period of play with the home side losing their last seven wickets for 68 runs.

While it was seamer Khaled Ahmed who initiated the slide by consigning the home skipper to his fifth ninety in Test cricket, Mehidy Hasan then stole the show in claiming four of the last six wickets to fall either side of the tea interval.

He also took a sharp catch at short extra-cover as Blackwood became the ninth wicket to fall in pursuit of quick runs.

However Mehidy's personal delight, and his team's cautious satisfaction at limiting the West Indies first innings advantage to a still considerable 165 runs, quickly dissipated when senior opener Tamim Iqbal and Mehidy himself fell to Alzarri Joseph.

That left Mahmudul Hasan and Najmul Hossain to carry the fight into the third morning.

Despite his excellent century against the same opponents in Chattogram 17 months earlier, the fact that the Bangladesh 'think-tank' felt it appropriate to send in Mehidy with more than half an hour's play available seemed a telling revelation on their own confidence, or lack thereof, in the resilience of the established middle-order batsman.

Painstaking progress

Not surprisingly, given that the pitch continues to offer some encouraging bounce and seam movement to the faster bowlers, Mehidy didn't last long, essaying his favourite forcing back foot shot but only succeeding in offering a straightforward catch to Kyle Mayers at first slip.

Joseph had removed Tamim in his previous over, the experienced left-hander drawn to follow a delivery angled across him for wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva to take the catch diving in front of first slip.

Bangladesh's precarious position was not for a want of effort from their bowlers.

With better support in the field and more judicious use of the available television technology, they could have significantly limited West Indies' first innings lead.

Both Nkrumah Bonner, who resumed as Brathwaite's overnight partner, and Blackwood were reprieved by on-field not out decisions when replays showed they would have been ruled out if captain Shakib Al Hasan had opted to challenge both decisions.

Bonner, who contributed 33 in a 62-run third-wicket partnership with Brathwaite, also edged Khaled at catchable height past a stationary Najmul Hossain at first slip before eventually ended his resistance by bowling him off the inside-edge in the visitors' only success of the morning.

The usually attacking Blackwood was even more pedestrian than his captain at the start of his innings with only three scoring shots off his first 43 deliveries up to the lunch interval.

None of this appeared to trouble the pair as they continued to plod along in the afternoon until Khaled, operating with the second new ball, got a delivery to jag back into Brathwaite and trap him so palpably lbw that not even the tantalising prospect of an 11th Test century just six runs away could prompt him into going for a review.

A bit optimistic?
 
I am actually surprised West Indies didn't get a bigger lead. I thought they would score 500-550 and bat Bangladesh out completely.

BD now have a small opening but WI are still favorites.

I now do agree that Bangladesh should be made confined to play lower tire test teams only like Afghanistan, Ireland, Zimbabwe . They should earn the right to play top tier teams. They just can't even make contest and every time there is a chance created for an innings defeat.
 
Batting again has been dreadful from Bangladesh - it's not like WI racked up a massive total yet they could still lose by an innings.

Pakistan did the same thing in the first test in WI last year as well by being all defensive after conceding the lead. Batting at 2 an over even in WI is a crime.
