China has confirmed Uyghur people have been forced into re-education and “deradicalisation” camps in Xinjiang to curb “extremist ideology”.
Chinese Ambassador to Australia Cheng Jingye told a media delegation in Canberra on Thursday that allegations “1 million Uighurs” were being held detention were “fake news”.
But moments later Mr Cheng made the media delegation watch a video compilation of Islamic terror attacks he claims were committed in Xinjiang.
Mr Cheng then confirmed in response to those attacks, Islamic people have been placed into re-education camps which he compared to “vocational” training schools.
“The local government has taken tough measure to crack down on those terrorism or violence,” he said.
“At the same time, they have started to take measures to address the fundamental cause of this.
“That includes to set up vocational training and education centres where people, aimed at deradicalisation to help people, to bring people affected by the extremist ideology and get rid of those influences.”
Mr Cheng said the deradicalisation camps had eliminated terror attacks in the region which he claimed had been targeted more than 7000 times in the lead-up to forced detention.

China is obviously brutal the whole world knows that, they will crush any wahabi, extremist or whatever else that they feel is a threat without any mercy. However I am genuinely shocked how a place not far from Indian Kashmir gets NO attention from the Pakistanis. There is a thread now about concerns relating to Indian muslims. Question is, is the Ummah selective ? Can you pick and choose which muslims are part of the Ummah ? Confusing, if someone can clarify.
P.S. Please don't respond back with silly lines such as; 'oh we have nothing in common with the Uighur muslims, so we can give China a free pass to ignore the human rights violations they are causing'. If you are going to respond, strictly respond on the basis of Ummah...
