A Preview of the PSL teams for PSL 9: Which team is likely to lift the Trophy?

Pakistan Super League (PSL) edition 9 is starting from February 17th next month. With less than a month left in the beginning of the Pakistan cricket galore. Here is a detailed preview of the upcoming tournament alongwith some player suggestions that would be a treat to watch this edition.

IMG-20231214-WA0003.jpg

With the team rosters finalized, let's talk about who has the best shot at taking the 9th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Would it be the third consecutive title for the defending champions Lahore Qalandars or someone else can claim the glory this time around?

Islamabad United (Winning chances : Medium High)

Islamabad United (IU) has the most experienced squad. They have great names like Colin Munro, Alex Hales, Imad Wasim, Naseem Shah and Tom Curran in their roaster. Overall, they do have a very compact batting line up and also possess the highest number of proper all-rounders among all the PSL sides. The only concern for them is a bit inexperienced but talented pace bowling lineup comprising of Shahab Khan and Shah brothers. Their spin department is also quite decent owing to presence of seasoned spinners like Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan. The form of Azam Khan and Faheem Ashraf would be a great decisive factor for the success or failure for IU. The addition of young Shamyl Hussain is also a bonus for IU squad.

Strengths:
  • Flexible squad with luxury of frequent reshuffling. As Shadab Khan can easily bat at no. 3,4,5 or even 6th spot. Likewise Salman Ali Agha and Faheem Ashraf can also play up and down the batting order. Thus allowing IU to make plausible changes in batting order as per situation.
  • Possess the most explosive opening duo in form of Alex Hales and Colin Munro. Hales strike rate(SR) in T20 is 147.2 and Munro’s scoring ability is even better than Hales at 156.4 SR.
Weakness:
  • Shadab Khan is out of form and a post injury Naseem Shah’s solid performance would be a big Contingency.

Peshawar Zalmi (Winning chances : Medium to High)

Peshawar Zalmi have improved greatly since last year. The addition of young sensations like Mohammad Zeeshan and Khurram Shahzad this season have been a great plus for them. Another boost for Peshawar Zalmi is its pinch-hitting star-studded batting lineup that includes the name of likes of Saim Ayub, Rovman Powell, Mohammad Haris, Tom Cadmore and Asif Ali. Also, they have gone extra mile this time around to address their previous bowling woes. And the bonus point for them is that all of their bowlers barring Naveen ul Haq have been in top notch form recently so this will benefit them greatly in the upcoming PSL season. Also, they are the top contenders for the PSL glory this year owing to their balanced squad. For me they will be one of the finalists this season.

Strength:

Top-class pinch hitting ability and versatile batting line up: Asif Ali (SR 147.0), Mohammad Haris (SR 146.5), Saim Ayub (SR143.9), Tom Kohler-Cadmore (SR 142.2) and Rovman Powell (SR 139.3) all being in the same side will be a treat to watch. Certainly, you can expect a lot of run fests from PZ this season.

Weakness:
  • Babar Azam’s lackluster record as a captain: Just 6 wins and 6 losses in 12 PSL matches
  • Recent injury to Khurram Shahzad in Australia that may rule him out from upcoming PSL season

Lahore Qalandars (Winning chances : low Medium to High)

From chokers to Heroes. The aforementioned sentence can better describe the transformation that Lahore Qalandars have gone through in the last couple of years. The two-time PSL champions also have a great squad this year too. But unlike last year, this year their star players are badly out of form. For instance, Haris Rauf has made a historic record for most runs conceded in a single World Cup, whereas Shaheen Shah Afridi is also going through a bad patch that has not even ended in Australia. So the big question for the Qalandars is: will their star pacers be in top notch form in the upcoming PSL or will they suffer the same thrashing that they have become used to in last few months? Apart from that, the batting department of LQ does look solid after the addition of exceptional T20 batters like Rassie van der Dussen, Sahibzada Farhan and Shai Hope. Their spin department also possess great flair owing to presence of experienced duo of Rashid Khan and Sikandar Raza. A headache for LQ will be to afford a place to Sahibzada Farhan in the opening pair but this in turn would call for a sacrifice from either Abdullah Shafique or Fakhar Zaman. Most probably Fakhar will bat at 3rd spot but that could be an omen for his good form as he does not have a good record of batting at this position.

_20240119_200959.JPG

Strengths:

Bowling is the main strength of LQ. And Zaman Khan would be their go to bowler this year owing to his spectacular performances in BBL.13 and recently for the team Pakistan

Weakness:

Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi recent lackluster performances and poor form will be a main headache for LQ this season.Especially a poor series against New Zealand for Shaheen Afridi in his maiden captaincy voyage may also shake his confidence as a captain in PSL too.

Another big blow for LQ would be the absence of their prime spinner Rashid Khan who will miss the action in PSL 9 due to his recent back surgery.

Karachi Kings (Winning chances : Very low to low)

T
here is no secret in it that the Karachi Kings have the most impotent and awful squad among all the teams in the upcoming PSL. And much worse is the fact that they let go their star players like Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir and Babar Azam in recent years. Also, another great folly on part of KK management was to give the charge of captaincy to Shan Masood instead of a serial winner captain like Kieron Pollard who has won multiple franchise league titles and has recently added CPL 2023 and T10 2023 titles to his name. But still, recent PSL draft has brought great names like Daniel Sams, Tabraiz Shamsi and Saad Baig into their squad. The bowling unit of KK is just pedestrian and average so they may face many issues here too. It may sound a bit harsh, but truth is that I don’t see this squad going any distance even a top four spot looks highly unlikely for them. But as they say, in cricket you never know what is going to happen next.

Strengths:

The presence of T20 specialists like Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard and Tabraiz Shamsi would be a great plus for the Kings.

Weakness:

After departure of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir they do lack the presence of a ‘X-factor’ person in their bowling unit.
_20240121_125247.JPG

Quetta Gladiators (Winning chances : Medium High)

Quetta Gladiators as usual, are sticking with their maiden PSL trophy winner captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. No doubt, he is a great captain but in recent years his performance with the bat has always been questionable. The good news for the Gladiators has been the addition of Australian coaching staff to their side and that will bear great fruit with it as the Aussies always bring in the “winning mentality” with them also. Another plus for them has been the upgradation of their bowling unit. Now they have made seasoned campaigners like Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Sohail Khan a part of their pace bowling unit and in spin department they can now avail the services of specialist spinners like Akeal Hosein and Abrar Ahmed besides Sri Lankan great all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. Furthermore, Quetta has reinforced their batting strength too with the addition of T20 pinch hitting specialists like Sherfane Rutherford and Rilee Rossouw. So overall, they do have a very capable and talented squad this year.

Strengths:

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s deft captaincy and incorporation of “Aussie effect” to the squad owing to appointment of Shane Watson and Shaun Tait as head and bowling coach respectively.

Weaknesses:

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s poor patch of runs as a batter and departure of young seem sensation, Naseem Shah who was their highest wicket taker in the 2022 season will be a source of concern for the team purple.

_20240119_195631.JPG

Multan Sultans ( Winning chances : Medium to High)

Multan Sultans have a really great squad this season too. They certainly have many match winners in their squad and can also be reckoned as the favorites for this year HBL PSL trophy. The main strong stay of MS is their bowling unit. They possess the best bowling unit among all the PSL franchises. Youngsters like Ihsanullah, Abbas Afridi are their talented rookies but at the same time they have the services of experienced pacers like Reece Topley, Chris Jordan and David Willey at their disposal too. Their spin department is also fine owing to presence of Khusdil shah, Iftikhar Ahmed and Usama Mir. Their batting unit is not as strong as it was last year due to absence of names like Rilee Rossouw, David Miller and Tim David from their ranks but still they have big guns like Iftikhar Ahmed, Reeza Hendricks and Dawid Malan that can wreck great havoc to the opposition. The Sultans are also lucky enough to have a wicket keeper batsman like Mohammad Rizwan as their captain as he not only leads from the front but also manages the players really well and that has been the reason they have ended up as finalists consecutively for the last three years with claiming the title once in 2021.

Strengths:

  • Compact bowling unit is their main strength. Abbas Afridi, Reece Topley, Chris Jordan and David Willey combined can dismantle any batting unit.
  • Availability of an experienced proper wicket keeper captain like Mohammad Rizwan.

Weakness:

Ihsanullah may not play in the upcoming PSL season at all for MS as he is currently under PCB’s rehabilitation regiment and also a strong contingent option for Pakistan T20 WC 2024 squad.

_20240119_195307.JPG

Dark Horses 🐴 for each side:

  • Peshawar Zalmi: Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Mohammad Zeeshan
  • Quetta Gladiators : Saud Shakeel and Usman Qadir
  • Islamabad United : Shahab Khan and Qasim Akram
  • Lahore Qalandars : Sahibzada Farhan and Sikandar Raza
  • Multan Sultans : Tayyab Tahir, David Willey and Faisal Akram
  • Karachi Kings : Daniel Sams, Mir Hamza and Saad Baig

Conclusion:

PSL 9 will be really crucial for the selection of top notch talent for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. It has been 14 years since Pakistan won its maiden T20 World Cup, so the performances in PSL 9 would be of great significance in finalizing an impactful squad that could seal the deal for Pakistan by ending the 14 years long T20 trophy drought in the Caribbean next year. Lahore Qalandars have the best squad on paper among all the PSL franchises but the issue with them is that their star pacers Shaheen and Haris are hugely out of form and because of this they are no more favorites for the title. Peshawar Zalmi have a fantastic squad this season and are more likely to end up as one of the finalists for PSL 9, they can even clinch it themselves only if Babar Azam does not not crumble under the pressure of captaincy. Multan Sultans are my pick for the winner slot in the HBL PSL 9 owing to their great captain and balanced squad. Things are also ambivalent for Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators but the only thing they lack is a Power-packed performances in the play-offs. If they can deliver there then certainly they can ink their own script for glory. And for Karachi Kings the things are looking bleak as they lack their usual charismatic roaster guys whom have departed in recent years so to book a place even in the top four would be a great achievement for them let alone lifting the trophy this season.

What do you think? What do you make of each teams chances?

My pick
Winners: Multan Sultans
Runner up : Peshawar Zalmi
Bottom 2: One would be the Karachi Kings for sure.

Title winning probability of each team
MS 25%
PZ 21%
LQ 20 %
QG 15%
IU 14%
KK 3%

The trade of PSL history Iftimania for Rilee Russow

MS because the mates quota has been given a massive boost for them
Well I believe ifti may not perform in internationals but in PSL he would be a great bully to the bowlers. You may dislike it bro but due to lack of competition, I believe Rizwan would be the winning captain this PSL.

Well which team is your pick?

Well, I don’t think MS have the side that can win the PSL, they couldn’t win it in the last two season’s with their Galactico middle order…don’t think they have a better chance this season either.

Quetta Gladiators. They look the strongest to me.

I reckon it's because of the Australian coaches and Amir's arrival. But bro QG too have been poor for quite some seasons now. Although I don't consider QG squad that strong but they have always been my side.

Well, they have some quality key players

Roy
Russouw
Hasaranga
Amir

That’s a solid core. Although Hasaranga is only available for the first 5 games. Plus I think they picked the best they could have in terms of domestic T20 performers. I followed the draft very closely. Every pick by QG was brilliant. They will be good this season.

Out of all the openers in the PSL, Jason Roy is the best

Out of all the middle order batsmen in the PSL, Rilee Russouw is the best

Out of all the all-rounders in the PSL, Hasaranga is the best
+Hasaranga is probably the best spinner too with Rashid Khan out of the tournament this year

Out of all the Pakistani seamers, Mohammad Amir is the best

QG have some excellent bases covered

For me the key for QG success this season would be the trio of Roy, Rilee and Hasaranga. And bro don't worry Hasaranga would be replaced by Akeal Hossein.

Big blow for Lahore Qalandars! Rashid Khan won't be part of the LQ in PSL season 9.

_________
With Haris Rauf badly out of form, big questions on Shaheen's latest form as captain. Rashid out. LQ chances have greatly diminished.

Alex Hales, David Willey , RVD, Shamsi , Hendricks, Ngidi , Topley , Pollard, Noor only 8 International players who have some context. That is basically the quality of PSL.

Even in its 9th season PSL has failed to grab a world class player, surely there is something missing clue in strategic planning.

Ravindra, QDK, Santner, Maxwell, Markram some effort should have been done to lure these players even if it is for 3/4 games

There is a theory around, I don't know how true is it that the players deliberately ignore PSL to ensure the pick in IPL. Phil Salt made this gamble and end up missing both PSL and IPL🤣

Yes A listers want to remain fresh and fit to show their ambition for IPL only. But PSL has to think out of the box like offering crazy $$$ for a couple of games to build the brand equity.

Bro I don't think PSL is by any means lower in standard than IPL. Infact it's more exciting and happens at a mlre better time for players and fans ie near spring season. And about money you are right, PSL can't offer that big bucks.

But I hope even A listers will realize soon that money is not everything. KP also realized this that's why preferred PSL over IPL in his last years in cricket.

Rizwan and Iftikhar had been top performers today. With talents like Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah in their side too. They appear as firm favorite for the title at the moment .

Any team that loses to THAT Karachi Kings squad doesn’t deserve to qualify for the knockout stages.
But still some teams will embarrass themselves.

I dont know why in earth KK choose Shan over KP. Pollard is a serial winner and better captain. Poor decision by KK management.

Pollard or even Kohli won’t make a difference with that squad.

Do you still believe that Shaheen could do good as captain for LQ after a really poor New Zealand series?🤔
Its important to put everything in context.

This was Shaheen s first series as captain with some opportunities given to new players with the T20 WC in mind so we need to give him some leeway and give him the backing.

NZ are an experienced outfit in home conditions with some good players have basis covered from top order , middle and lower order and a very good experienced pace attack. Santner and Sodhi are decent spinners.

Our problem area is 5 , 6 and 7 which is why I would add Salman Ali in the T20 set up at 5 who I forgot to mention in my earlier post of pool of players in all formats.

We also need a quality spinner with Shadab and Abrar on the injured list.

I would of chosen Riz as captain and allowed Shaheen to develop another couple seasons at LQ before he took over as a natural progression.

Good reasoning. I also believe it's a bit early for Shaheen and Rizwan instead would have been the pick.

And it was good on part of Shaheen to give exposure to new guys before T20 WC. Hopefully they would refine themselves this PSL. Well it means you are foreseeing MS as winners owing to Rizwan? I guess.
We should get rid of this Chacha! Can’t believe we traded for this guy
Hahah... He may win the title for MS. Like he won the match yesterday for team green.

Where New Zealand barely even tried to win that game. What about the 4 other t20’s where was his performance?

Bro he did not get the chance to bowl in other matches or else the results might have been different.

This one is directed at you by ifti @Mohraheem.

A very good analysis and preview. Worth reading. After reading it, I was right to continue supporting Lahore Qalandars for this season too.

Where New Zealand barely even tried to win that game. What about the 4 other t20’s where was his performance?
NZ restricted us to 135 runs and barely tried to win the game.

They could of won 5 - 0

Shaheen should have used Ifti for a few overs in the previous games that was a tactical error on his part.

All the squads look well balanced this year so it will be a tough call on who wins the trophy.

I would of liked to of seen Usama Baloch given a chance this season by one of the franchises as he could be an exciting addition for the national side.

looking forward to seeing Nafy he is another exciting prospect.

I hope to see a few quality spinners emerge as that is an area we are short of currently along with some middle order batters.

Great analysis.
Rashid's absence puts a big hole in LQ. Shaheen's fatigue is also going to become a factor in this PSL IMO.
As with any franchise tournament, it's hard to predict who is going to win considering the team's cohesion and form.
I am always going to go with IU as its my city.
PZ will sneak into playoffs and they usually take down a stronger team there.
MS looks weak this year.
QG looks better.
KK no one knows how they are going to go but they will probably do better than they did in last 2 seasons.

U don’t know that! Even Nawaz took 2 wickets! New Zealand would’ve smashed Chacha all around the park if they would’ve given him an over in early matches. He is there to bat not to bowl.

Expecting some friction and unease between the management and the team due to Ali Tareen's antics in appointments of the staff.

Bro if you ask me which team has a proper T20 squad then I would name PZ but again Babar unfortunately falters under captaincy. Otherwise if they would have a better captain then trophy was theirs this year.

You ve answered your own question. How do you know they would have smashed him in previous games ?. :genius

Ifti is playing as an allrounder. I said he should of bowled a few overs in previous games i didnt say he would guarantee wickets.

A captains role is to use all the options available to him.

First 4 t20 pitches were batting friendly. Did Chacha perform ? He only performed when the last pitch was bowling friendly. Chacha fans likes to find excuses and blame on captain 😂 instead! Live under the rock till Chacha performs Thn come out be like Chacha is a hero! He was selected on batting point of view. Not bowling. We had spinners

How can he perform with the ball without being given overs in the first 4 games?.

who told you that spinners dont bowl on batting friendly wickets?.

The majority of cricket wickets are batter friendly. By your logic spinners shouldnt play cricket.

When your main spinner or pacers gets carted you look for another option to bowl those overs. :genius

Who said Ifti was a hero its quiet simple he was given the ball and he got wickets. He was doing what he s paid to do contribute to a team win .

Babar plays as a batter, Ifti plays as an allrounder because he offers an option with the ball. Why do you find that so difficult to understand.

Most people on the forum will tell you that.

Part time fans dont understand the game which is why they live under rocks.

Real supporters dont have a bias or favouritism towards a particular player.

They are there to support Pakistan and to watch them win.

Most of the batting didnt perform this series. Ifti was nt the only one.

The captain s job is to use all his options on every wicket and conditions to win the game.

I hope you understand now.

Buddy he was the option for batting not bowling, he ain’t even an all rounder! It was a fluke bowling day for him.

He got

Ish Sodhi whose run average in t20 is 7.66
Matt Henry Whose run average in t20 is 4.

Both are amazing batsmen 😂😂! But according to stats they are Tail enders. Maybe in your Chacha’s fantasy cricket world bro they are high rated player hence you support Chacha so much for getting them out 😂

Tim Seifert who didn’t have a good series and got LBW by Chacha! Fluke

Nawaz and Usama mir also had a good day! But they were both smashed in early series!

Stop overhyping this player

Every guy who is playing in the squad has to contribute to the Team's victory. If he is doing it with the ball then he should be praised and if he is doing it with the bat then the same as well. Need to acknowledge the effort of the player on that particular day. Yes, Iftikhar's place in the team is not justified anymore but the truth is he was not used as a bowler like he should have been. He is more than a handy bowler. Batting failed, yes, but bowling is another area where he can do good any day.

BY THE WAY, This thread is more related to PSL so we should not be derailing this thread anymore. Let's just go back to the topic, please.

My favorites team is lahore qalandars and multan sultans but like to see lahore qalandars win the trophy again :ssa

Expecting some friction and unease between the management and the team due to Ali Tareen's antics in appointments of the staff.
Such issue do has some effects on results but I feel Rizwan being the leader with close aides like Iftikhar, Khushdil and Abbas Afridi in side would be able to offset the negative influence of Ali Tareen. And more importantly in cricket the things on field matter more than things going on in background.

Bro what all teams having balanced squad do you mean Karachi Kings too??. Because in sight of many they won't even make it into top 4 because of below average squad.

This was clear Rashid Khan wasn't going to be part of PSL this time around. Still with this I list them as favorites.

Moreover, each franchise will have two extra picks to complete their squads, focusing on the nineteenth and twentieth players. The main draft, which was held in December, had teams selecting 18 players each.

Who's available? It's not like PSL Teams have a plethora of options.

Torrential rains will hit the country during FeB month, let's see how PSL will cope with it given the atrocious infrastructure in our stadiums

Bro what all teams having balanced squad do you mean Karachi Kings too??. Because in sight of many they won't even make it into top 4 because of below average squad.
Yea bro I know Karachi look a little light bowling wise with Amir gone but on the whole all the squads look competitive.

We have seen many a time when on paper one side looks considerably stronger than the other and they loose.

T20 is a format that brings teams closer together.

unless Shan s captaincy pulls something out the bag I have them in the bottom two.

Theres no overhyping. just stating facts Ifti plays as an all rounder. A batter who bowls.

It aint hard to understand bro.

Where in any post did i highlight any players who ifti dismissed and say they were top players?.

Your confusing yourself bro by creating dimensions to your post that don t exist.

I dont favour any particular player.

I Favour The Green shirts and want our team to win series and trophies.

Simple.

I feel Kieron Pollard would have been better option than Shan Masood for captaincy option.

He Is not an all rounder! Keep the same energy when he doesn’t perform.

You seem to have an issue with Ifti.

He has 225 career wickets.

How many batters do you know with 225 wickets?.

The difference between me and you is I dont hate on any individual players I just state facts and call a spade a spade.

My policy is straight forward I support all the players no matter what city/ village etc they come from.

When they step on to the field wearing the green shirt they have my support because they are representing my country.

I will offer constructive criticism and praise in equal measure depending on what needs to be said no bias towards any player or personal criticism.

I am not wasting my time on a non sensical issue any longer.

Ifti is a Batter who bowls.

Like it or not.

Order of players picking in PSL supplementary draft.

The replacement draft, which will be an online event, will see franchises name replacements for the players who are partially or fully unavailable, which include two players each from Gold, Silver, Diamond and Platinum categories, and one from the Supplementary category.

Separately, in the supplementary draft, each franchise will be allowed to add players to their squads in the third and fourth supplementary pick rounds.

PSL is starting in exactly a week. Players and coaches are expected to arrive in a few days. With the prevailing election chaos, should the PSL be cancelled/postponed?

Carrying out the PSL at this moment of time will be catastrophic in my honest opinion. Not only is it a major security risk, it will also tarnish the reputation of the PSL and Pakistan.

What has elections to do with PSL, besides Mohsin Naqvi is appointed as Chairman to look after the situation

Hahahah... It would just remain a dream I guess😁

Several players pulling out of the tournament. South Africa's Lungi Ngidi will not be turning out for Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators will be without Wanindu Hasaranga, one of the leading players in the world in T20 cricket.
The likes of Shai Hope, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van Der Dussen, James Vince, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed and Naveen ul Haq have also pulled out of the tournament. Reece Topley has also pulled out with an injury.

I think PSL 9 is going to be the most boring edition of PSL.

Prediction time Guys!!

With less than 24 hours left in the commencement of PSL, let's forecast your winners for PSL 9
Expecting some friction and unease between the management and the team due to Ali Tareen's antics in appointments of the staff.
@Major, @Rana ,@BunnyRabbit @RidiculousMan @everyone. Let's see who gets vindicated in the end.

My prediction
PZ winner
LQ runner up
IU 3rd
MS 4th

Regardless of strength of the squads (unless the difference in quality is too big), any team can win.
I'd still go for IU although I find Shadab's leadership abilities to be not up to par to win tournaments.

Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators final

QG to win
