Bollywood Corner

i know in south there are some actors who look like common man..but this is bollywood thread..in earlier days we never had such chiseled bodies..now everyone even tusshar kapoor and that son of deshmukh also show their body..why is the body become so important..why less acting and more glamour?? and the examples you gave was not mainstream..nawazuddin will never get mainstream roles...earlier we had shatrughan, sanjeev kumar..amitabh bachchan..shashi kapoor..who never had to show muscles..never had to work out..just their acting and their voice was enough for them to get mainstream roles... has india moved from substance to superficial in these decades??

Now...what is your problem with working out...Hrithik rosham works out..but he did not show in in Guzarish did he?

If India moved from substance to superficial....why would we have a movie like Oh my God starring paresh rawal collect close to 100 crores????
Barfi as one of the highest collecting movie this year

Why would we have a movie like kahaani with a pregnant women as lead collect close to 60 crores...

why would we have GOW and paan singh tomar as hits..

It is actually you are looking at the superficial aspects like body..not looking at the real thing content

Ranbir has a thin body

but he did rocket Singh, Wake up sid, and Rockstar where he never showed his body....

so...stop looking at superficial things like body.....they are just maintaining their body to look good...

Ajay Devgan is a star because he shows his body..his looks??

You have to accept people nowadays work out more and hit the gym more often than the earlier generations, it is only mirroring society. And its not due to movies, movies only incorporate what the society does.

i have no problem with people working out..but i am asking the question WHY IS IT NECESSARY for every mainstream actor to have a good body and to show it... the movies that you gave example of show that not all directors and not all audience is blinded by the glamour... ranbir has thin body that is why he had to show his abs in his first movie?? vidya balan has the normal figure that is why she had a nose job?? even a good actress like priyanka chopra has to go for plastic surgery?? i am asking why this is happening and you are giving me examples of exceptions!!

race was lifted from a hollywood movie..it had so many twists and turns that i searched which movie it is lifted from..and found it was Goodbye Lover... but i agree..a movie need not be original..let everyone enjoy!!

Oh wait..Towell act by Ranbir Kapoor was a tribute to Rishi Kapoor's Bobby?

These are not exceptions sir...Consider Ranbir Kapoor..,,Out of all his movie he did he only used his body in his first.and his two rom coms.

remaining 5 to 6 movies..he did not.....so the exception is one where she showed his body!!

And Nose job is hardly this generation is it...Remember a certain Sridevi who did a nose job in the early 80's?

Priyanka Chopra going for plastic surgery is her problem...the audience did not ask for it....and she is an exception here...she was star before as well..isnt she?? so how does audience becoming more glamour oriented come into picture

Vidya balan nose job is a romour..."Apparently" !!!

Audience were never blinded by glamour..if they were Arjun Rampal the model would be the biggest star now..

Why did it take so many year for John Abraham to become mainstream and get A list projects while somebody like Ranveer Singh becomes a star right away....

I list 6 huge movies this year..and you are calling them exception

and one more example...Kangana was an A lister before her **** job..and now she is isnt that much..is she???

And since we are talking facial feautures...explain why Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn, shahrukh Khan are stars?

True...I mean wife of a brother having sex with an another brother is definately a copy from good bye lover....like I am sure in no other movie was that concept used !!!! Let us just forget the main plot of the movie completely ....

As far as I read..in Good bye lovers....two people are actually in love arent they...

here bips, Saif, Akshay...none were actually in love with each other ...everything was part of the plot..no??!!

I havent seen good bye lover btw...just read IMDB!!

frankly i dont know who is this ranveer singh you keep mentioning.. ajav devgn and sharukh khan are established since a long time..that is why they are stars... but why ajay had to build muscles and why srk had to show six pack abs.. you give examples of arjun rampal and john abraham.. the very first thing that should be asked is why did models enter bollywood..and i am not even going to the female sunny deol..what is she doing in bollywood... why are people with no acting background getting chances in bollywood?? what is the basis for that?? if it is not physical attributes then what else can it be..
yes sri devi might have done..but just one actress..and now it is a trend that every actress is following..
so my question again is.. why are established actors showing off their muscles and why models with no acting talent are getting chances??

no..it is not just that broad plot. many small scenes as well...and of course they change a bit here and there..cant do 100% copy... btw even bollywood is a copy of the name hollywood..so we have the right to copy movies from them anyway!!

Ranveer Singh is that Baand Bhaja Bharat guy....he has good body...but is not good looking!!

As far as Ajay , And SRK..Ajay was playing a masala cop...and SRK a today's youth ..more like a spoof in Singham and OSO......in no other movies you see them showing their body...do you???

Now about models...getting chances....well....Many get chances...and some survive..coz they improve..... Shahrukh Khan was a masters in Mass communication...why did he enter acting??? Wait...Was Manoj Bhajpayee a stage actor before he started acting??? Why are we questioning why so and so are getting roles?? .....what matters is do they work hard to stay for long...while dino moreo left a million years ago...Abraham stayed.....coz he became decent after a while......

Wait....And I do not think you have watched race...brothers husband sleeping is not the broad plot...but a small sub plot !! So I did not get when you said "not just the broad plot" !!!


Okay...I need examples please for small things!!!...but for what I read It is only that part of the sub plot which is also not that similar..and if you google race...that is first thing that is coping up!!

So what are these small things???

Abbas Mastan have a history of borrowing from hollywood..I wont be suprised...but I want to know the small parts you are talking about here!!!
 
I will tell you what Gentleman, you are hell bent on proving that bollywood has become superificial..and made up your mind.

So whatever I say you will not be convinced.....and you are conveniently ignoring many points

While you look at the body..and I look at the work the person with the body is doing....

so feel happy thinking that actors..people who watch them all have low self esteem....your fav assumption!! not going to spoil that.... :D

While it is quite apparent who is looking at superificial things!!

navroks my friend, i am a bollywood fan..and i am not degrading the industry which has given me so much entertainment and provides livelihood to so many... but you also said that body building is the nw trend in bollywood... my question is why?? of my answers may be wrong..maybe it is just so that the audience get to see some well built bodies also..or maybe the character demanded it..or maybe now more indians are going to gym... but still they dont represent the common indian.. indians in general dont look like bollywood stars.. i want a star who has bad set of teeth..or is bald..or has a belly..but acts damn good and gets mainstream roles... i like kk menon..pure acting no physique..manoj bajpayee.. and now nawazuddin.. but they are still offbeat actors.. the superstars are always the chiseled body actors.. not saying they cant act.. but even those who can act had to show off their muscle because the newcomers were doing that... i mean since when having a good body become important to acting?? why earlier movies didnt have such stars..even dharmendra who was supposed to be well built had enough fat... only a baritone voice and some chest hair has enough to make you look sexy.. but now you must have a six pack... what is the reason?? because of these people i also wanted to have abs..and have been trying since 2 years and not getting it... and what are plastic dolls doing in the movies..whose only role is to smile and look pretty.... people from non acting background movies were cast after they showed acting skills which they proved in their first movies itself..but models and female sunny deol they didnt have any acting talent..so what was the reason they were cast?? and if you get chances in 10 movies even you will learn acting..because there are so many retakes... i have myself acted in plays...also won audience award...so acting is not that difficult... anyway...i will look for which points of yours i ignored and answer them..

Okay First....are we talking actors or Stars!!!! Stars is not just acting but has charishma..good looks...good personality..and ability to engage the audience....star comes in a package....

Even back in day ....Naseerudhin Shah was not a star....was he? Rajesh Khanna was star because the girls at that time found him sexy according to their taste.....and then came Amithab Bacchan.....

Do you know anil Kapoor was considered sexy because he had chest Hair!!! and he had loads...

In Today's World....people work out more..and it is showing in bollywood. People keep up with the trends....in different ways!!

But Idea of being more appealing to the public is the same....however looks are not the only factor...Today...20 yrs later...there are still young fans for SRK....Salman or Akshay ...not because they have body...so the thing is Idea of what is perceived to look good has changed from generations....but idea of the star being attractive is the same!!!!

Back in the day Dharmendra may be considered sexy having loads of chest hair...now it is not...now chiseled body is considered sexy....things change..hairstyles change.....

People from non acting back ground have always come into bollywood....if they had stuff to succeed ..they have...so I do not see a problem!!

Cinema is a visual medium...looks , charishma play a part...sometimes over ride acting....read Salman !!

They show of their muscles coz they have it...back in the day Anil, Sunil Shetty...showed their chest hair.....Atleast muscles are hard to get!! Is that your problem btw? :D

90 % of the male stars are successfull coz of their acting....however successfull they are...even females...likes of Vidya, Anushka, Deepika, Kareena are considered more successfull as actress than Sonam and co who live in empty celebrity status with no work to back up...Eventually they will fade out !!!

Industry still rewards acting....and charishma....Idea of looking good has always been there...back then it was something that was natural...(chest hair and voice)...now it is something that has to be achieved with hard work....muscles!!

About bad teeth...Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn ...stars aren't they?

I do not know what you mean by Manoj Bhajpaye is not mainstream.....he is a A list main stream actor...so is Irfan Khan..so is naseerudhin shah...and they are stars in India....

Even in Hollywood...Whoopie Goldberg or Morgan freeman are no bigger stars than Brad Pitt....(heck I doubt if they make more money than Kristen stewart)

Being a star is different from being an Actor...Star has to have everything...and everything....and that everything changes!!

Ranbir Kapoor is a star now...but it is not the muscles that are reason for the stardom...but his acting!!!People are more body conscious now..and it shows...may be girls back then liked chest hairs and mustaches...but now they do not ....!!!!

All the people back then were stars because they were considered good looking or had charishma....now how those characterstics are percieved has changed....that is only differenc

thanks for your reply navroks...i dont tell you but i always like your posts..and i also visit your profile to check which thread you are viewing... so from your post i get that now muscles is more attractive to the audience than body hair and voice..which was enough earlier. I also get that actors survive because of acting and not their physique. and i agree with these two points of yours.. so today physique is important along with acting (excluding guys like srk, amir who are big stars since 20 years).. and sometimes it is seen as everything that directors are ready to cast models who had no acting experience.. but only those who can act among them survive in the long run.. that means audience likes your physique if you can act a bit..unless you are a female like katrina kaif..then audience is just happy to see you smile and act cute... anyway..so basically we agree that today physique matters more in charishma... a girl told me that if you get abs you will look like randeep hooda..because my face matches his... but why this idea that a guy must have abs?? why has it become so important in our consciousness that people keep talking about abs..even in india today summit..srk was talking about his abs..it has become such an irritating topic as if you are not complete unless you havs abs..hopefully this will be a passing fad and six pack will be removed from our common lexicon!!

Not Phsique..Looking good and in good shape is always important in an visual medium !!! What is perceived to be good looking changes as time goes...Models are welcome to cinema just like any other graduates are....if they learn...they will become John Abraham..if not Dino Moero and Upun Patel. Charisma has whole lot to do than physique...but today the idea of good looks is to be in good shape..and maintain your body!!!

About Katrina, I have soft spot for her considering where she came from, her background..and her hardwork, improvement and what she has achieved.I still consider her a very average actor....She is biggest female star now..but you wont see her in any roles which requires great acting...Anushka..lately Deepika..Vidya take them anyway !!!!! she is smart ...picks her roles intelligently !!! Sometimes Their offscreen personality makes me not want to criticize them on screen.....Katrina is one of them for me !!

Dude....Well until Recently...It was people like Malaika Arora Khan right???? And it only took Malika Arora Khan to bring bank Item song into the market with Munni Badnaam Huii....Even before we did Item songs from Established actress like Urmila Matodakar in Company...susmitha Sen in Fiza...Aishwarya Rai in Ishq Kamina.....So not entirely new...or aish in Kajra re

Personally I would not consider songs like Sexy Sexy in Khuddar from Karishma or Ek Do Teen from Madhuri anything more than Item songs...even though have a main part in the film !!!

So mainstream actresses doing special songs is not entirely a new !!! It is just that have actually become more promotional tool than Before....It was said that Katrina was offered a whooping 4 to 5 crores for Chikni Chameli...and trade analysts like Komal and Taran said....60% of the movie's promotion and reach was down to her and that song...because it was everywhere!!!

Btw...Remember Sexy Sexy....they censored the song and modified it to baby :D...how times have changed !! :D

Well..That is one way of looking at it...but talking about inhibititions remember Mandakini, Zeenat Aman...even Dimple Kapadia in Bobby..they literally acted nude and wore see through dresses inthe 70's...Even during that period it was helen or Vajayanti mala who were doing item songs!!....

Khuddar is almost 20 years back...Even Ek Do Teen. Actually since Helen left....It was only Malika Arora Khan who took the tag of a Item song dancer..and did iconic songs!! Remaining were more about special appearances to create enthusiasm among audience...Say what Aish brought to Kajra re cannot be brought by any other dancer....Even the biggest ...good item songs are done by Malika Arora Khan or Mallika sherawat ...even in Rowdy rathore it was Dance India Dance winner Shakti Mohan, Mumaith Khan and Maryam Zakaria.

I think the Negative mindset for item songs have decreased..and actresses ..and even actors see it as a tool to stay in limelight if there is no film of theirs for a while...and are shooting!!

Even SRK, Hrithik, Salman..and many are dong it..it is not just down to actress!!
 
now your answer makes me miss raj kapoor.. he was one director for whom zeenat aman, mandakini etc were ready to push themselves... we need a raj kapoor for dipika and vidya balan etc.. pushing the limits of acting..
 
True...But I really do have hopes...Vidya will def end her career as a legend..I am sure..I am waiting for her next...a comedy thriller with Emran Hashmi called Ghanchakkar..she is playing a pubjabi housewife of Imran....
Deepika, Anushka..sound promosing and looks like more inclined to take challenging roles...

I would like to see Mahie Gill, Huma Qureshi enter more mainstream cinema...
 
Vidya will be a legend if she chooses her movies wisely.. and not like that heyy babyy.. but such roles are limited..and she must also do maxim cover like mahie and huma did..at least for her fans

I actually find her more attractive....sexy..in a Saree...read Ishqiya. As far as Magazine covers go...I do not remember the magazine....I guess it was for FHM...one she did in white saree was ...(fill in the blanks yourself)

Wish his next Directorial Venture...Vishwaroopam a grand success !!!
 
a Legend..who actually should not be in Bollwood thread because he respectfully shunned Bollywood and thank God for that... what a versatile actor..so much detail in his every role.. only complaint I have is why does he have unnecessary kissing scenes..and does too many roles that require makeup..
 
Well,I did not want to create an another thread for this....Would not say shunned but he did come back occasionally with hindustani...Chachi 420 or Heyram....I think negative publicity heyram recieved inspite of its brilliance probably turned him off ...Even Abhay's Failure. And also the movie he did after were very Tamil centric...

Thinking back the varied number of roles...and number of movies he did is astonishing....from a silent movie called Pushpaka Vimanam(pushpak ) in hindi to a fat corrupt mayor in indirian chandiran to menally obsessive lover in Guna to a disfigured face communist in anbe sivam to a alcohol addicted dancer to a dwarf to a 80 yr old women to a encounter specialist to a father of a girl sold to brothel to uneducated villager in Virumandi to anti gandhi activist in heyram to serial killer in abhay to don in nayagan to unemployed 80's indian driven towards communism in aakali rajyam to a persion with panophobhia (fear of everything) in Tenali....and I am actually not listing many many of his brilliant works....and that last scene in Sadma still gives me shivers...

I am not sure if you have watched Mahanadhi....1993 Tamil movie...Look at this scene....he rescues his 15 yr old daughter from a brother..and she has nightmares ...and she is saying...how many people...am I a machine and all that in her nightmares...

Since I have seen your views..I would urge you to see a movie called Anbe Shivam...it is about a disfigured communist and a modern today's guy...they get stuck in mumbhai floods..and they make a journey together to their destination...their conversations and incidents in the journey is the movie..

hey navroks, what do you think of casteism in bollywood... why are police inspectors mostly rathore, khan, singh?? unless he is corrupt, then he can be a yadav, shetty etc. what is this notion of promoting some castes as brave??

so only a few exceptions..it shows there is a casteist mentality.. in that movie Shool, by manoj bajpayee, who people say looks like me, his name was samr pratap singh, typical name for a honest policeman, and the corrupt politician was bachchu yadav..a low caste.. maybe subconsciously bollywood promotes casteism

Yeah...I am yet to see her speak with authority in any of the roles she has done !!!! Apparently she will doing a few action scenes in Race 2..although the trailer shows most of women action is done by Jacqueline fernandez

I stopped watching hindhi movies a decade ago but I am gaining my mojo again courtesy my younger brother

Emraan Hashmi is an under rated actor. I have recently enjoyed watching Rush and Killer. His films have some hidden meaningful message to deliver and I liked that part a lot in his movies.

True, the thing is his works are very Tamil/South Indian centric Themes..even when he was making movies in hindi once in a while in 90's,80's.....majority of his work was in Tamil even then which hindi was unaware of. But I believe even though he did only a few movies in Hindi...lot of Quality work and he will be remembered...Sadma,Pushpak,Heyram, Chachi 420, Hindustani,Nayagan,Ek Tuje Ke liye, Saagar etc.... I am not sure if the movie where he plays a dwarf was dubbed in hindi...but many of my hindi friends have watched..

hey navroks, i wanted to ask..do you think Sholay had a gay theme?? because it showed a special bond between Jai and Viru, they were ready to die for each other instead of their heroines.. and gabbar singh when he captured thakur, cut his hands, but didnt do anything to hema malini.. now why would a man cut the hands of another man..think deeply .. and he would ask..kitney aadmi thay?? even in the song mehbooba mehbooba gabbar was not interested in helen..like a shakti kapoor would have been..

but very good friends dont die for each other..when they have girls they are trying to woo... another movie zanjeer..where a special bond was shown between pran who played a pathan and amitabh.. pran was so into amitabh that he said yaari hai imaan mera, yaar meri zindagi..and even danced for him.. dont you find that a homo theme??

Jab Tak Hain Jaan --- My Review.

It is Yash Chopras world...It is big...it is romantic...it is illogical...it is pure...it is surreal....It is deep...it is human....it is unreal !!!!

In Veer Zara , we saw a man staying in Jail for more than a decade for his love...While you question how unreal it is ...how any human can do it ...SRK and Yash Raj drag into that world with their magic...when the song Tere Liye Starts...and you actually feel for Characters.

That is what will happen to you in Jab tak Hain Jaan...if you let it happen...You will Question the characters....you will laugh at a few decisions and twists .....you will use your brain and say....do these people even exist...But you will go along with those characters and feel for them...root for them..and laugh with them !!!!

If somebody at 45 with wrinkles can pull of a romantic character, it has to be Shahrukh Khan....he is the King Khan !!!! But now, I think this a right movie to end playing bolllwyood style romantics...he was awesome as usual as an army officer.

Katrina Kaif is just perfection, she is angelic in a few scenes. But what audience can take away from this film is...Katrina Kaif can carry a character.....She was incredible in dance sequences pre Ishq - Shava.

Anushka Sharma is a Star....there is no Denying that. She oozes energy in the scenes after interval......She is hear to stay..and I can see her pulling of some amazing characters in the near future.

While Rahman dissapoints compared to his previous works...It suits the movie...BGM elevates some very mediocre scenes.

I think Katrina and Anushka will come out as winners....while Kat can give confidence to play character driven roles...Anushka overshines SRK in all most all the scenes they share.

Second half of the second half drags and drags and drags...movie is 3 hours long...

Pick of the movie was the end titles where Yash Chopra is shown having fun with title song in back ground...how he interacting while shooting...It was amazing...the man made cinema right up until he died.

Over all, Not Yash's Best film....not this Years best film....Not even close to SRK's best films..or neither it is For Anushka or Katrina or Rahman or Gulzar or Yash Raj...

But Watch it for Yash Chopra, for an good end to an Amazing Career and Life and coming from an 80 year old man...this is a good end with an epic Love story.

Rating: 7/10 -- Watch it !!
