How many times we have read about people burning alive other people in India! It feels like India has more such acts that any other country in the world. Just saw this news today:

Police in India said on Sunday they were looking for five men after a 35-year-old woman was gang raped and burned alive in the northern city of Sambhal, the latest registered rape in a country that sees hundreds of cases of sexual violence against women each year.

Horrible. What is the logic of these acts in India? Why mostly use fire to burn a person alive instead of using other ways to kill a person?

Maybe something to do with the old tradition of burning widows? Ive also seen Buddhists set themselves on fire in protest. But it's probably just a form of murder carried out by the wicked people who have firstly raped the woman.

Indian government seems to be mute regarding the many assaults against women esp after many protests and campaigns in India.

Even in bollywood movies they show people killing other people by burning them alive. What is this fascination with fire? Dont they know it is one of the most cruel death?

That's sick. Rapes are increasing in india day by day. And these b******s don't even stop there. They mercilessily kill the victim after this.

They burn the victim to kill all the evidence that detectives might want to gather from the victims body.

Nothing to do with tradition or ritual. It is just a wicked mentality of cold blooded criminals that have courage to do this kind of devilish acts.
In the past there have been many incidents of burning women alive in suspect of performing witchcrafts & it was worldwide trend back then.

The victim was alive when set on fire.

Rapists do not care whether the victim is alive or dead when setting fire. They simply douse the kerosene and throw a lighted match at the victim and runaway.

With more and more women complaining to police, the rapists are getting scared about jail time and instead want to kill the person while also eliminating any evidence of the rape.

Im not an expert on the minds of a rapist but you it seems you are guessing here. Not all who are set on fire die and just because the victim is set on fire, this doesn't mean forensics will be worthless.

I have seen several of such things on News since my childhood. Rapists are cowards. They used to get away with Rape when women were to too scared to come out and report them.

Now a days many are coming out and reporting them to police. This scares the living ish out of the rapists. They have no option but to not only kill the victims but kill any evidence associated with the act.

Even in Nirbhaya case (Delhi Bus Rape), the rapists on TV said the same. Also killing by Kerosene is decades old ploy where in newly wed brides were killed for Dowry purposes. Its not a new trend.

I think it has to do with Hindu culture which promote such things.

Tradition is a big reason but another may be evidence.

I don't think religion has any role in these things. There was a rape/murder case in Andhra a few weeks ago where victim was burnt to death by a Christian pastor. 2002 Godhra train burning was done by a Muslim mob where women and children were burnt to death, similarly a low caste boy Sawan Rathod was burnt to death by a Muslim 2 years back. A pregnant Muslim girl in Karnataka was burnt to death by her parents because she married a Dalit. I can go on and on with these examples but what I trying to get at is that there isn't any religious angle in these acts of violence.

Evil is evil and India is a big country with more penetrating reach of news channels, 20 years ago this wouldn't even have made news because media then hardly ventured into interior India. Besides fire/arson is a powerful tool to spread violence because it is not only very effective but also more difficult to catch the culprits. Those who kill by knives or guns are easier to trace, especially if you can narrow down on the weapon used.

The issue we must focus here is the act of violence on women and not whether she was hacked or buried or set on fire. Violence against women is a grave danger in Indian society and we must admit we have a long way to go to counter it.

Bro I think Hindu tradition is to be blamed here.

Why bro? Isn't cremation a very holy method of disposing of a dead body? I would have thought fire would be a religious method carried out by holy people and not be used by evil people? Or is there something I am missing?

Bro Hindus used to forcefully burn their women back in the day. This might be a relic from their past.

I don't even know what to say.

The thing to say here is a promise to self where we say that we won't ever be enablers and fight the system no matter how hard it becomes for us.

Patriachy must fall.

Fire does seem to have some cultural significance in the SC, I know even in Pakistan there have been cases of suicide through self-immolation. Maybe it's just more thorough and effective. What would be the western equivalent crime? Probably the victim would be strangled instead of burned or maybe bludgeoned to death. The burning would also leave less evidence as has already been mentioned.
