Professor of medicine at the King Edward Medical University, Dr Irshad Hussain, has called for introduction of vaccine in Pakistan to prevent diabetes since the prevalence of the disease has almost doubled in adults/children.

“Pakistan is facing a potential threat of diabetes outbreak, particularly in adults due to unhealthy lifestyle,” Prof Irshad told Dawn.

While sharing some hard facts on the World Diabetes Day on Monday, he said the vaccine to prevent the disease among children/adults had been introduced in America where it was also available in inhalable form.

“Pakistan lacks consolidated data on the exact number of patients and the burden of the disease in Pakistan. Though we are lacking authentic statistics about the exact prevalence of this disease, some reports estimated that Pakistan has become 7th largest country in terms of diabetes population and it will be 4th largest by the year 2030.”

About the prevention of the disease, Dr Irshad said work was being done worldwide to introduce the cure for the disease through oral drugs. In America, he said, type 1 diabetes vaccine had been introduced for the adults living with this disease. Similarly, Phase III trials had also started for new oral type 2 diabetes drug.

Meanwhile, like other parts of the country, many activities, including seminars, walks and dialogues, were held in the provincial capital to observe the World Diabetes Day.

A seminar followed by an awareness walk at the Mayo Hospital. Heads of all four medical units of the Mayo Hospital, namely Prof Dr Irshad Hussain, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Khan, Prof Dr Sajid Ubaidullah and Prof Dr Tariq Waseem, attended the activities besides chief executive Prof Dr Asad Aslam Khan and a number of young medics.

The Lahore General Hospital, Fatima Memorial Hospital, Shahdman, and Shalamar Hospital also organised walks and seminars to observe the day.

The Pakistan Young Pharmacists Association held a workshop on diabetes at a hotel here. A number of research papers were presented in it and the participants included more than 200 pharmacists from across the province.

Addressing on the occasion, Pakistan Drug Lawyers Forum president Dr Noor Muhammad Mahar said awareness was the best remedy to fight diabetes. He said everyone, including healthy persons, should examine the sugar level once a year as a preventive measure.

Pakistan Young Pharmacist Association secretary general Dr Haroon Yousaf and Joint Secretary Dr Hina Shaukat presented their papers on role of exercise in control of sugar and benefits of honey and drugs.

Don't even know why this is an issue

Medicine is one avenue of addressing the illness, seems to me that some form of general dietary and fitness advice should be more widely available as well. When I see members of the public on some of the Pakistani tv channels, seems they are often fat and unfit. Looks like KFC and Dunkin' Donuts are a big hit there, now they just need to take up running like they do in the good ol' US of A.

The past and present governments would rather take billions of dollars of loans to invest and build metro buses, shopping malls, motorways etc; but not invest in medicine and medical stuff at all.

Pakistan has never got it's priorities right in the last 30 years.

What vaccine is he talking about?

No such thing exists at the moment(outside of clinical trials). Certainly nothing has been "introduced in America".

I don't think such a vaccine even exists..

There is a vaccine for Diabetes?

News to me.

Outside of potential cure through Stem Cell research, there is no cure for it.

so what is going through clinical trials atm?

would be good if they can find a some sort of cure though. it must be the biggest killer other than cancer these days.

It's another good example of being reactive rather than being pro active.

It's better to educate and prevent the disease in the first place rather than spending potential millions or even billions to combating these eventual problems that will occur in the future.

Been reading about the Stem Cell Research for a while now. They are still trying out on Mice and Rabbits. Sucks that nothing seems to have moved since 2008 (the first time I heard about the potential cure for Diabetes).
The biggest issue is that the injected cells may have the potential to turn cancerous. So the Scientists have to absolutely sure before the vaccine is available for public.

Of course, the Big Pharma lobbies will never let the vaccine come out. Who is going to spend hundreds of rupees/dollars in buying Insulin tablets when the cure is available?

We can go to Moon, send probes to Mars, Juiter, Pluto and take pictures. Yet we cannot find cure for Diabetes. LOL

I can only hope for diabetes cure. No "bitter gourd" juice in morning for me then.

There is no such vaccine. Ridiculous article by Dawn, would have expected better quality control on what they are publishing.

There is a big difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is that your body cannot produce insulin thats why your sugar is high. Type 2 is your body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin that's why your sugar is high. For type 1 diabetes, some centers have started offering a pancreas transplant. The pancreas is the organ that produces insulin, and in these patients it can be a cure. But transplant is a very complicated thing and you have to be on very strong medicines for years to reduce your immune system from attacking the transplanted organ. Besides insulin that's the only "cure" for Type 1 diabetes at the moment.

For type 2 diabetes, yes you can certainly reserve the disease through diet and exercise. There are many patients with type 2 diabetes that are able to come off their medications by improving their habits. Lifestyle changes such as improving your diet and increasing exercise can make your cells and tissues better able to respond to insulin, and so you can come off your medications. There's a strong genetic component as well that's not perfectly understood.

Hope that helps!

Diabetes becoming a global health issue: Wasim Akram

https://en.dailypakistan.com.pk/spo...ome-a-global-public-health-issue-wasim-akram/

Legendary cricketer Wasim Akram has said with increasing levels of poor nutrition and physical inactivity among people, type 2 diabetes may become a global public health issue, leading to serious health problems.

He was addressing the participants of walk organised by Shifa International Hospital to mark World Diabetes Day, highlighting this year’s theme ‘Eyes on Diabetes – Act Today to Change Tomorrow’.

Akram said that one, out of two adults, currently living with diabetes, is undiagnosed. Those at risk of developing it in future, must ensure early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes complications.

A large number of doctors, Shifa employees, citizens with their families and university students participated in the event. The participants were holding placards and banners inscribed with encouraging slogans for diabetic patients and awareness quotes.

Wasim Akram shared with audience that 1km daily walk and diet control is my routine for many years that keeps me fit in my fifties. He said that public awareness is very important for timely diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

He stressed that unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are key risk factors for the diabetes. He thanked media for supporting the cause and helping Shifa in creating community awareness.
