What's new

Chelsea FC | 2020/21 Season

Thomas Tuchel is set to become Chelsea's new manager after Frank Lampard was sacked on Monday, with the club's hierarchy hoping the German is the man to unlock the potential of their most gifted talents.

Tuchel is one of the most complex manager personalities in European football. The 47-year-old is known as a political power player and control freak, but also as a tactical visionary and methodical thinker. He was dismissed by Paris St-Germain in late December after months full of fights between him and sporting director Leonardo.

While some in France claim Tuchel never brought the best out of a star-studded squad, PSG still reached the Champions League final in August and won back-to-back domestic titles. His track record was certainly good enough for Chelsea's board, who approached him shortly before Lampard's dismissal.

At first, Tuchel was unsure whether he should take the job midway through the season, but he has envisaged a move to the Premier League for quite some time, first engaging in talks with Chelsea in 2017 after he departed from Borussia Dortmund.

Tuchel views the job at Stamford Bridge as a chance to prove himself in England, just like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola - two men he admires - have done before him.

Tuchel was unable to break Bayern Munich's Bundesliga dominance but he did lead Borussia Dortmund to the German Cup
Throughout his career at senior level, Tuchel has gathered experience in a variety of environments. He started at the small Bundesliga side Mainz, moved on to the much more ambitious but financially limited Borussia Dortmund and then took over French champions PSG.

The Blues have an expensively-assembled squad after a lavish summer outlay but it seems unlikely Tuchel will face the same resistance in the dressing room as in Paris. Some of Chelsea's players complained about a lack of tactical instructions and general communication under Lampard. Tuchel, however, is known to communicate extensively with his teams. If they let him.

The German will also not hesitate to implement some of his ideas - be it on the tactics board or elsewhere. At his previous clubs, he drew up diet plans, monitored sleeping patterns of players, overhauled the analytics department, changed the scouting processes and got involved in the renovation of facilities.

Repeated clashes with management
His willingness to control virtually everything at a club has made him enemies in the past.

During his time at Dortmund, he banned head scout Sven Mislintat, who later worked for Arsenal, from the training ground because of philosophical differences and demanded certain signings from chief executive Hans-Joachim Watze and sporting director Michael Zorc.

"What matters are fundamental values such as trust and respect," Watzke said after Tuchel had left. "With Thomas Tuchel at the helm, Dortmund enjoyed two successful years in which our sporting objectives were achieved. However, we did not always see eye-to-eye with the coaching staff during this period."

Tuchel will not have the time to introduce any substantial reforms at Chelsea in the next few weeks, but the summer could be the first test for the relationship between the German and Chelsea's hierarchy. Whether owner Roman Abramovich, who is said to be a fan of Tuchel, and director Marina Granovskaia will be fond of their manager's personality can only be subject to speculation at this point.

Worked well with Pulisic and Silva
It is understood, though, that those high up at the club believe Tuchel will be able to get better results out of the current squad than Lampard, who lost his job following a run of five defeats in eight league games. The Blues spent £222m in the transfer market last summer but most of the signings have not met expectations.

Most prominently, the two German attacking players Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have had more downs than ups since they arrived at Stamford Bridge.

As Chelsea have considered several German-speaking coaches in recent weeks - they approached former RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick directly and reached out to the same club's current boss Julian Nagelsmann's camp - it seems as if the Blues hope that the German school of coaching that also spawned Klopp could reinvigorate the club.

Tuchel, having gone through the German coaching education system after he had to retire from playing at 25, might be able to connect quite easily with Werner and Havertz and implement them into his system.

He also worked well with Christian Pulisic at Dortmund and Thiago Silva at PSG. Moreover, he asked PSG's management to make offers for both Jorginho and Antonio Rudiger during previous transfer windows.

It has already been reported players like Pulisic are happy about the arrival of Tuchel. While his personality might be off-putting in the eyes of some boardroom executives at times, he has helped a lot of players improve and take the next steps in their careers. "It is a players' game. We as managers only serve our players," he once said.

Considering the complaints about Lampard in recent weeks, this attitude might be just what this Chelsea squad needs.

TUCHEL JOINS CHELSEA

Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new Chelsea Head Coach. He moves to Stamford Bridge following a two-and-a-half year spell at French champions Paris Saint-Germain, which came to an end last month.

He will be the first German to manage Chelsea and arrives having guided PSG to four major honours and the Champions League final during his time in the French capital.

Prior to that, he spent seven seasons coaching in the Bundesliga, first with Mainz, where he led them to the Europa League, and then a successful period with Borussia Dortmund where he won the German Cup.

At Chelsea, he will be reunited with Christian Pulisic and Thiago Silva who he coached during his spells in Dortmund and Paris respectively.

Tuchel, who has signed an 18-month contract with the possibility of an extension, said: ‘I would like to thank Chelsea FC for their confidence in me and my staff.

‘We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea. At the same time, I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football. I am grateful to now be part of the Chelsea family - it feels amazing!’

Director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘It is never easy to change Head Coach in the middle of the season but we are very happy to secure one of Europe’s best coaches in Thomas Tuchel. There is still much to play for and much to achieve, this season and beyond. We welcome Thomas to the Club.’

Tuchel will take his first training session this evening and will be in the dugout for tomorrow’s Premier League game against Wolves.

FULL TIME: Chelsea 2-0 Burnley

Thomas Tuchel picks up his first Chelsea win in his 2nd game, thanks to goals from Azpilicueta at the end of the first half, and Alonso at the end of the 2nd half.

Dominated a typically defensive Burnley side, 72% possession and 19 shots. Burnley did not register a single shot until the 94th minute (and it wasn't even on target).

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said his side failed to show "enough courage" in their narrow FA Cup win over Championship side Barnsley.

Tammy Abraham scored the winner with his side's only attempt on target to book a quarter-final home tie with Sheffield United.

Abraham was forced to make a headed goal-line clearance towards the end to deny Barnsley substitute Michael Sollbauer an equaliser.

"We scored the goal and I had the feeling that they increased the risk, but we stepped down in the little decisions," added Tuchel, who made 10 changes to his side.

"Not enough courage and it was too deep for a long, long time. We clearly can play better, so yes I expected more but not in terms that I am frustrated.

"We can do better but I don't want to be too hard on the players."

Hard-working Barnsley were the better team in the first half with Kepa Arrizabalaga blocking Callum Brittain's attempt at point-blank range.

The hosts claimed Abraham was offside for his goal but the England forward just held his run to ensure he was onside to finish from close range.

Chelsea are now unbeaten in five games since Tuchel took charge in January and will entertain Sheffield United in the sixth round on the weekend of 20-21 March.

Thomas Tuchel sets out Chelsea approach and admits PSG exit has complicated family life

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel says he does not do anything to be loved by the dressing room and admits he can be a "shouter".

Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard less than a month ago, has spoken candidly about his approach to management ahead of Monday's visit of Newcastle in the Premier League, live on Sky Sports.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss is clear that he will prioritise honesty over making friends, while always maintaining a degree of unpredictability.

"Just because I'm trying hard to be kind to you guys [the media], does not mean that I am trying too hard and that everybody loves me in the dressing room because this simply does not exist," Tuchel said.

"It is not necessary. But, in a moment where I am happy I can tell them also that I am happy with their attitude, their performance and the atmosphere in the dressing room. There is no harm in that, I don't hold it back then.

"Can I be a shouter? Yeah, of course, if it's absolutely necessary. But I can be totally emotional, and I can also totally be a shouter if I feel this is the minute to do it and to surprise. If you do it all the time then no one would listen because it becomes a habit, so everybody gets used to it.

"The goal is also to stay a little bit unpredictable, and most of the time to be reasonable because, for me, it is important we build a trust and relationship that we can rely on.

"Player's won't get punished, shouted at or insulted in front of a group, this is unacceptable. But if we have to point out things clearly I'm a big friend of doing it in front of the whole group.

"If we have behaviours that harm the group and cause trouble for the team on the pitch, we should tell the players individually, but I believe strongly that everybody has to have the personality to swallow criticism in front of the group.

"That way no harm is done because we can talk openly. To be clear and to be honest, this will never change. I don't do stuff to be loved by everyone in the dressing room, this is not possible."

Tuchel has got Chelsea playing some good football.

Very impressive win over Liverpool. Should have been more than 1 0.

:)))

What a humiliation. The countdown to Tuchel’s sacking begins today. It will be the same old story at Chelsea - appoint a manager, lose patience after a couple of years.

Imagine the meltdown if this happened on Lampard’s watch.

I hope you enjoyed this.

Tuchel is a top class manager. He has started well at Chelsea. The true test will be when teams start working out his tactics how he will react. We know that if he has a bad run, his job will be in danger.

Hmm. Didn't see that coming. Some of the goals from west Brom were exceptional.
Chelsea just weren't there today

Problem with being forthright and making too much noises too soon is that it is difficult to survive during the bad times. That result oriented approach suddenly gets applied to you and we Tuchel might be on other side of that "accountability" table now.

One of the biggest shocks of the season that against West Brom.

I don't get why he dropped Mount who has been amongst Chelsea's best players this season.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says "things got heated" in a "serious situation" between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Antonio Rudiger on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Kepa and defender Rudiger were involved in an incident in training the day after Chelsea's shock 5-2 defeat by West Brom.

"We needed to interfere in the situation, so that was serious," Tuchel said on Tuesday.

"They cleared the air immediately and there was nothing left the day after."

Tuchel said the argument stemmed from an incident in training and not the loss to West Brom.

Rudiger was reportedly sent in early after the two players were seen to push one another.

"It got heated up between Toni and Kepa," the German said. "So we calmed the situation down immediately.

"The reaction was not OK. But how the guys handled the situation, especially Toni and Kepa, was amazing and showed how much respect they have for each other."

Tuchel said neither player would be punished after the players "immediately sorted it out" between themselves.

"They sorted it out straight after training in a very honest, humble and very direct way," Tuchel added.

"That showed me they have very good character. Toni sorted it out directly, and it was a strong and brave thing to do."

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic said the incident was "not a big deal".

"These things happen in a family and we're a strong group," the Croat said. "We spoke about it - it is all cleared and all done."

Chelsea's loss to West Brom at the weekend brought an end to a 14-match unbeaten start to Tuchel's reign.

They face Porto on Wednesday at 20:00 BST in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Tammy Abraham's Chelsea future looks increasingly uncertain after he was left out of the squad for the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Saturday.

The 23-year-old England international, who is Chelsea's top scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions, has registered four FA Cup goals across three games, including a hat-trick against Luton Town in the fourth round.

He is said to be fit and training well after recovering from an ankle injury, returning to the bench for last week's Premier League win at Crystal Palace and the Champions League quarter-final second-leg against Porto on Tuesday.

However, he was an unused substitute both times, with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel recently warning that Abraham will not be handed game time just to boost his chances of making England's squad for the European Championships.

Abraham has found himself marginalised since the arrival of German head coach Tuchel in January and his hopes of making Gareth Southgate's squad for the rescheduled Euros - set for this summer - are steadily fading.

A number of top clubs in the Premier League and across Europe are well aware of Abraham's lack of game time and are known to be considering a summer move to test Chelsea's resolve to keep their academy graduate.

"I cannot make a decision on the personal goals of players," Tuchel said. "Tammy has had a rough time.

"He's not had the impact we demand from him. He then got injured and lost the possibility to play for his place. We're in the decisive part of the season, where it's not so easy to bring injured players into shape.

"It's up to Tammy to do everything possible. We demand a lot of him, he demands a lot of himself."

Abraham was Chelsea's top scorer last season with 18 goals across all competitions.

Thomas Tuchel has done a brilliant job. He has got Chelsea organised and we can see what he is trying to implement. He has also got the experienced players on board with what he is trying to do. I have always rated him as a manager, the problem is he can fall out with players or the higher ups in management. Let’s see if he has learnt his lesson. Another thing that will be interesting to see is how he will adapt when teams start working Chelsea out and he goes through a bad patch. We know Roman doesn’t stick with managers who go through a long bad patch or don’t win.

Owner Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea board say they "deeply regret" the decision to join the controversial European Super League.

They were one of six Premier League clubs to join only to withdraw 48 hours later following a furious backlash.

Chelsea fans held a protest on Tuesday to make their feelings known.

"The owner and board understand that involving the club in such a proposal was a decision we should not have taken," the club said.

"It is a decision we deeply regret."

Chelsea added that the initial decision to join the Super League was taken because they did not want to risk "falling behind" their English and European rivals.

However, they said they quickly recognised that their involvement risked damaging the club's reputation.

"We have taken time since withdrawing from the ESL to speak directly the various supporter groups and listen to their views and concerns," the Blues added.

"Our ambition with Chelsea has always been to make it the best club in the world, both on the pitch and in how we work with, and give back to the community off it."

Across London on Friday discontent with club owners was shown by fans of Arsenal and Tottenham - two other teams that had committed to the European Super League before also withdrawing.

More than 1,000 Gunners fans gathered outside the Emirates Stadium before their Premier League game with Everton, calling for owner Stan Kroenke to leave.

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust urged the club's board to resign immediately in the wake of their involvement.

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola have criticised changes to the Champions League format that will see the number of clubs competing in it increase from 32 to 36 from 2024.

Both are concerned about the impact an increased number of games will have, something West Ham boss David Moyes believes could be eased by the creation of a unified British competition.

Moyes feels the formation of a Premier League II - which would include Rangers and Celtic - and a reduction in the number of teams in Premier League I would help relieve fixture congestion.

Solid win for Chelsea against a good West Ham side.

Looking good for a top 4 finish now.

Up to 3rd now, with an excellent win over Man City.

They look like the team that could challenge Man City next season for the Premier League.

Test for Tuchel is coming. Teams will start analysing his formation. He will need to overcome this to have long term success.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said he is in "angry mode" as the Blues prepare for "two finals" against Leicester City in the space of four days.

Tuchel's side face Leicester in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.

Chelsea, who are fourth in the Premier League, then host the third-placed Foxes on Tuesday in a key game in the race to secure a top-four finish.

"These are two finals and we do not think about anything else," said Tuchel.

"It's the final of the cup and the final for the top four."

Chelsea will play Manchester City in the Champions League final in Porto on 29 May, with victory guaranteeing a place in next season's competition.

However, the race to secure Champions League football via a top-four finish in the Premier League is wide open, after the Blues lost 1-0 to London rivals Arsenal on Wednesday.

Fifth-placed Liverpool are four points behind following Thursday's 4-2 win over Manchester United - and have a game in hand.

"We missed the chance to have a decisive advantage [in the table] against Arsenal," added Tuchel. "We have to be up for it. Any win gives you a good feeling and it is tough to play two finals against the same team, but the whole group is available.

"It's the moment to step up and enjoy on the highest level, by suffering and helping each other on the pitch.

"I'm not yet in the mode to enjoy it; I still have a bit of a hangover from last defeat so (...) I'm a bit more of angry - angry mode. I'm not angry on myself or at the players, just on the result and the opportunity we missed.

"I will hopefully transform it into a good preparation and to push the team to the edge and let them play sharp, this is my responsibility and we absolutely have to show a reaction."

Former Paris St-Germain boss Tuchel, 47, is set to take charge of his first final since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard in January.

Chelsea beat Premier League champions Manchester City 1-0 in the semi-final at an empty Wembley in April - but around 22,000 supporters are expected at Saturday's FA Cup final.

"It's a big match, it's at Wembley, it's an FA Cup final - my first final here in England," said Tuchel. "It's huge but I will not get carried away with the emotions tomorrow. I'm fully focused to prepare my team better than we did two days ago."

On fans returning, he added: "I forgot about it until you asked. I got so used to not having spectators. The semi-final was without spectators for us; it will be a shock tomorrow to go on the pitch and hear some noise but it will be so, so nice. We are absolutely looking forward to that.

"The game is not the same without spectators, it's pure pleasure to arrive tomorrow and see our fans there and parts of our families. I think it's a huge boost for everybody."

Hazard wants to leave Real Madrid and eyes Chelsea return

After another tough season with Real Madrid, Eden Hazard is reportedly looking to leave Los Blancos during the summer and go back to the Premier League.

In two seasons with Real Madrid, Hazard has not lived up to the expectations and has had a number of injuries with have limited is playing time for Zinedine Zidane.

According to journalist Edu Aguirre on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, Hazard is aware he has not managed to reach his best with Real Madrid and is looking for a way out, with Chelsea his preferred destination.

The possible arrival of Kylian Mbappe have also inserted doubts into the Belgian's mind as he feels this could reduce his playing time for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez would not stand in the way of a transfer for Hazard, given he is one of the highest paid players in the squad with a contract until 2024.

Hazard was signed for 100 million euros in 2019 from Chelsea, and has managed 43 games for Real Madrid, scoring just five goals, since making the move.

A couple of signings and who knows they could be the team to challenge City next season for the Premier League title.

Chelsea are interested in Inter Milan's Romelu Lukaku and Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland as the club plan to invest in the playing squad again this summer.

Chelsea set to axe 10 players in massive overhaul despite UCL glory

According to transfer news from The Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea are looking to let go of 10 players in a massive clearout. The Blues are looking to offload a lot of fringe players as well as a few who are still involved with the first-team.

It has been a massive 10 days for the Blues. First, they secured top four in the Premier League in the last gameweek (albeit with a bit of help from Spurs). Then came the holy grail with the Champions League win over Man City to hand them the title. It was a comprehensive performance as Chelsea added their name to the winners’ list for a second time.

However, work has already begun for next season as the side want to strengthen in the summer with some transfers. While there have been various links to players such as Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, Achraf Hakimi and Niklas Sule, Chelsea are actually looking to reduce the squad size with some departures.

It has been reported that Chelsea are all set to sanction the exit of 10 players from their squad. Fikayo Tomori is set to be signed by AC Milan on a permanent deal. Another player who could move there is Olivier Giroud, whose contract ends in the summer.

Two significant departures could be those of Tammy Abraham and Kurt Zouma. While Abraham has been on the fringes for a while, Zouma’s name comes as a surprise. It has been said that he does not fit Thomas Tuchel’s style of play.

A host of players who are out on loan are also set to face the axe. Davide Zappacosta, Ross Barkley, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and Michy Batshuayi could all be shown the exit door too. Another name who has not featured under Tuchel, Emerson could also be on his way out.

It will be a big summer for Chelsea, no doubt. There are bound to be new players coming in through the door but Chelsea will need to lighten their squad. They have far too many names on their books and offloading them will not only get them some cash but also ease the wage bill.

Thiago Silva extends Chelsea contract to 2022

Chelsea have confirmed that Thiago Silva has extended his contract with the club for a further year.

The Brazilian centre-back only joined the Stamford Bridge side last summer but has since become an integral part of the Blues squad.

His initial deal was due to expire at the end of this month but Chelsea have now revealed that the veteran will stay for at least another 12 months.

The news comes just a few hours after coach Thomas Tuchel’s deal was extended until 2024.

Pep Guardiola has already warned Chelsea of the risk that comes with signing Erling Haaland

Chelsea are prepared to smash their transfer record this summer to bring Erling Haaland to Stamford Bridge from Borussia Dortmund

You may have heard that Chelsea would quite like to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer. If you haven't, then let me be the first to welcome you to the internet. It's a wonderous – if not at times unforgiving – place.

But back to Haaland. The Norwegian is one of the most in-demand players in world football. Since joining Dortmund in January 2020, he has scored 57 goals in 59 appearances for the club. He is a phenom.

It's why Chelsea and a host of European football's other elite clubs are all interested in signing the 20-year-old. There are several stumbling blocks to overcome, however.

The first is the fee required to prise him away from Dortmund. football.london understands the Bundesliga side are holding out for a package in excess of £150million for Haaland this summer.

In a transfer market still impacted dramatically by the Covid-19 pandemic, very few clubs can come close to matching BVB's demands. Chelsea, though, are one of the few.

The Blues have the resources needed – thanks in part to Roman Abramovich – to fund such a lavish transfer. They also have the added cache of being champions of Europe after overcoming Manchester City in the Champions League final in Porto last month.

Haaland, according to The Telegraph, is open to a move to Stamford Bridge if Chelsea can come to an agreement with Dortmund. That is another obstacle ticked off the list in terms of getting a transfer done.

The sticking point could prove to be the salary required to sign the forward. While no exact figure has yet been revealed, it's understood a contract that would make Haaland the Blues' top earner – and potentially by some distance – is required to secure his signature.

That could prove a problem for Chelsea. Not because the Blues couldn't finance such a deal for the Norway international; elite-level football clubs tend to find the money they need in such circumstances. It's more the knock-on effect on the rest of the squad.

When Manchester United brought in Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January 2018, the Reds decided, rather incredibly, to pay him a reported £560,000 a week.

It ripped apart the club's wage structure and eventually led to the departure of Ander Herrera on a free transfer and United being forced into offering David de Gea a huge deal to stop him from doing the same.

Man City had also been interested in the Chilean star before learning of his wage demands. “We try to be stable with the wages of the players because I think it is good for the team and stability of the club, the stability of the club is the most important thing,” Pep Guardiola admitted at the time and was subsequently proved right.

It's certainly something for Chelsea to keep in mind when it comes to a move for Haaland. If he is to be handed a significantly bigger contract than those who only last month delivered the club's second Champions League trophy, there is a possibility resentment could then grow and then fester among the group.

The summer window is officially open and now the Blues can look to build on European glory and bolster the squad to push for Premier League supremacy.

Haaland's contract would also be the yardstick on which future deals are based. What's to stop, for instance, Antonio Rudiger bumping up his demands as he negotiates a new contract? Or Jorginho, another key cog in Tuchel's side, doing the same in the months ahead?

The financial impact of Haaland's potential arrival is not a deal-breaker by any means. And it's almost certainly something Chelsea will be fully aware of. But as Guardiola warned when it came to Sanchez, the stability of the club should never be compromised, no matter how talented a player may be.
